Isn't "crunch" something that gets done just before something is due to be finished - a fame, house, book, car, whatever - as in "crunch time"? If they are being forced to work overtime in 2025 for a game that isn't due out until mid 2027 that isn't "crunch" it's just forced overtime. It isn't "crunch". That's not what the word crunch means.

At some point, after a console is a certain age, companies just stop making games for them, and in 2027 PS4 will be past that age.
As a reminder PS4 launched in 2013. Who's going around saying "Let's make a game for a 14 year old console in 2027"? Historically 14 yo consoles don't get new games. Not b/c they can't run them, just b/c they stop making games for them. π€·ββοΈ

@nessisonett I don't think I got very far in.Unreal, have never liked first person games, but I had to try it. I might own Unreal Tournament on a Dreamcast disc, also never played it. Probably got those on clearance at Comp USA or Computer City when they were going out of business. My first, well 2nd really, home PC only had a floppy drive, no disc, I can't even recall which tower I had to play that on. So. Long. Ago. (I'm typing this sitting in a room surrounded by probably 100 games and I'm not even sure where my Dreamcast collection is, though it's only like a dozen discs. I can see my Dreamcast.π)
@nessisonett I was thinking Serious Sam as well, but it somehow looks slower in the screenshots, (can screenshots look slow?) than that fast paced game, so more like "Unreal" or even "Turok Dinosaur Hunter" or whatever it was called. Do people know Unreal was a game before it was an engine? I still have the disc in the box. It was a cool box.

@get2sammyb It's a great time to be a free to play gamer. In the past week both Fortnite and Infinity Nikki updated to new seasons. Nikki is like a whole new game and Fortnite is Fortnite again after the condensed map Simpsons seasons.
With Hoyoverse and the others seemingly non-stop on these it really makes it look like Sony messed up forcing, or maybe just encouraging, so many of it's studios to try to make these types of games rather than story driven single player games that Playstation is known for.
@Silenos Are you playing WWM on PS or PC? I've read OS5 has tech issues compared to PC. I looked at it before it came out then got distracted by Palia which I also haven't started and now I have 4-5 hours of gaming in Dreams to go play. I may never pay for games again. Well after FF7R part 3, that's day 1.

I've seen these around for a bit, I thought it was 1 of those projectors to display your other device on your wall or garage door. Always made me think of the Ouya in design so that's not good. π
I've been playing online multi-player for free online every day on my PS5 for years - Fortnite, Disney Speedstorm, Infinity Nikki. The fact that they're free doesn't help the cause of "You have to pay to play online" which we also don't do on PC or mobile. It's just greed.
Sony putting out a $30 pack for need to pay for the game need to pay to play online Gran Turismo 7 should be all you need to show it's greed. Yes I know the 3.0 update is free, but GT7 should probably jyst be included in PS Essentials at this point. Gaming is getting crazy.

Thoughts on the Lin Manuel inspired new Idina Menzel sung theme song? I miss the blatant rip-off of "Jump Up Superstar" but this does feel kind of big and epic now like a proper sequel should. It takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom so that makes up for losing the Nintendo theme song.π
I somehow missed the original article on Monday but I've been looking forward to this "update" a lot. I put update in quotes b/c it feels as much a sequel as any other long running continuing game series like God of War, Horizon, Spiderman or Uncharted.
I logged on last night but didn't get a chance to even go to "It's a Land" (Mario voice) b/c of reading everything new then doing the first round in the arena, but it's certainly like a new game w/ all the new who stars and fast travel spires to find. Looking forward to it this afternoon after getting back from my wife's birthday brunch at our favorite little coffee spot. We're hosting 20 people for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow, and her family tonight for her birthday dinner, so we're just going to spend the afternoon today just chilling w/ Niki and Momo. π
@Art_Vandelay Day and date is a no-no for Sony games, but I think a couple of years later is fine. First week sales of big PS5 games are the big ones b/c people are waiting 3-5 years to play it day 1, not wait another year or 2 to play it on PC.
Console sales will end some day. They did for Sega, they did for Nintendo - Switch & Switch 2 are handhelds w/ tv out, Microsoft will stop making Xboxen in a gen or 2. And so will Sony after that.
So selling old games now gets them started on PC for when there are no lore consoles.
I game from my iPad to my TV wireless you, it's easy. If this hardware xan do that now, 10 years from now why do I need a console, or a PC, when I have a phone and a grip like controller?
Cox earlier said he feels weird when people congratulate him on the game b/c he did like a few hours in the afternoon, he said it wasn't even really "work", probably compared to all the actual work he has to do on Daredevil.

How much did it cost them to port some already existing PS5 games to PC vs how much does it cost them to make that $7B per quarter?
$1.2B may not sound like a lot to the handful of people running the world, but if it only costs them a few million to port them, then why not? I doubt there are that many people not buying a PS5 b/c of the late ports.
If I'm wrong and it's costing them $1B to port them then don't, probably not worth the look for a $200 million profit.

So. Many. Zombies. Games, movies, TV. Sucks for me b/c I'm not a fan. π Even the movie "Sinners", which was a decent remake of "From Dusk til Dawn", basically turned it's vampires into zombies. That's from both my wife and kid as soon as we finished watching it.
Elden Ring was great. I mean I wish it had an easier mode so I could have fought the bosses myself rather than just summoning in other people and watching them do it, but the 100 hours I spent grinding to get to the point where I could start playing the game were great. The best horse travel there ever was or ever will be. But not every game needs to look like it. I don't do souls likes.
I think it's partly Chinese games, partly Unreal Engine 5, and partly the zeitgeist. It will pass. Or at least diminish enough that 40 minute State of Plays don't look like 1 long game. We need more color. PS2 had it all, seemingly constantly. Now we wait for an Astrobot or Dragon Quest once every few years.
PS5 is now officially over 5 years old. Price drop is nice, should pick up a few more sales for Sony, but if you've waited this long to purchase a PS5 you might as well wait for a PS6. At least to find out if there is going to be a proper handheld variant. If it's just going to be another home console then maybe pick up a PS5 during a sale.

@Silenos Are you playing WWM on PS or PC? I've read OS5 has tech issues compared to PC. I looked at it before it came out then got distracted by Palia which I also haven't started and now I have 4-5 hours of gaming in Dreams to go play. I may never pay for games again. Well after FF7R part 3, that's day 1.

I've seen these around for a bit, I thought it was 1 of those projectors to display your other device on your wall or garage door. Always made me think of the Ouya in design so that's not good. π

I've been playing online multi-player for free online every day on my PS5 for years - Fortnite, Disney Speedstorm, Infinity Nikki. The fact that they're free doesn't help the cause of "You have to pay to play online" which we also don't do on PC or mobile. It's just greed.
Sony putting out a $30 pack for need to pay for the game need to pay to play online Gran Turismo 7 should be all you need to show it's greed. Yes I know the 3.0 update is free, but GT7 should probably jyst be included in PS Essentials at this point. Gaming is getting crazy.

Not that anyone in the industry does anymore, more like "gone bronze", then patch it after release to get to silver, celebrate the 1 year anniversary by finally going gold.

Edit: No live action Akira despite 35 yesrs of trying. Probably for the best. Bought myself the UHD discs for Christmas, will probably watch it 3x, original Japanese, original Kuh-ney-da English, then second Can-nuh-da English dub.

@get2sammyb 382MB update this morning. I'm expecting 1 of them at least once a day for a week or 2. Maybe longer w/ the birthday and anniversary updates coming in quick succession.
Thoughts on the Lin Manuel inspired new Idina Menzel sung theme song? I miss the blatant rip-off of "Jump Up Superstar" but this does feel kind of big and epic now like a proper sequel should. It takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom so that makes up for losing the Nintendo theme song.π
I somehow missed the original article on Monday but I've been looking forward to this "update" a lot. I put update in quotes b/c it feels as much a sequel as any other long running continuing game series like God of War, Horizon, Spiderman or Uncharted.
I logged on last night but didn't get a chance to even go to "It's a Land" (Mario voice) b/c of reading everything new then doing the first round in the arena, but it's certainly like a new game w/ all the new who stars and fast travel spires to find. Looking forward to it this afternoon after getting back from my wife's birthday brunch at our favorite little coffee spot. We're hosting 20 people for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow, and her family tonight for her birthday dinner, so we're just going to spend the afternoon today just chilling w/ Niki and Momo. π

@Art_Vandelay Day and date is a no-no for Sony games, but I think a couple of years later is fine. First week sales of big PS5 games are the big ones b/c people are waiting 3-5 years to play it day 1, not wait another year or 2 to play it on PC.
Console sales will end some day. They did for Sega, they did for Nintendo - Switch & Switch 2 are handhelds w/ tv out, Microsoft will stop making Xboxen in a gen or 2. And so will Sony after that.
So selling old games now gets them started on PC for when there are no lore consoles.
I game from my iPad to my TV wireless you, it's easy. If this hardware xan do that now, 10 years from now why do I need a console, or a PC, when I have a phone and a grip like controller?

Cox earlier said he feels weird when people congratulate him on the game b/c he did like a few hours in the afternoon, he said it wasn't even really "work", probably compared to all the actual work he has to do on Daredevil.
Seems like a very modest guy.
Malle voice actress (Jennifer English?) deserves the award though. π

How much did it cost them to port some already existing PS5 games to PC vs how much does it cost them to make that $7B per quarter?
$1.2B may not sound like a lot to the handful of people running the world, but if it only costs them a few million to port them, then why not? I doubt there are that many people not buying a PS5 b/c of the late ports.
If I'm wrong and it's costing them $1B to port them then don't, probably not worth the look for a $200 million profit.

@somnambulance Well the only colorful game these days is Fortnite, and we know how everyone here feels about that one, so color be damned I guess. π
Jennifer English needs to do about 80 more games before she becomes the next Troy Baker, BTW I think Ben Starr might already be the next Troy Baker, but I get what you mean about the dark fantasy vibe.
An update on Dragon Quest 12 would be nice. Maybe they have to finish remaking 1-11 first. Only about 5 or 6 more to go I guess.

So. Many. Zombies. Games, movies, TV. Sucks for me b/c I'm not a fan. π Even the movie "Sinners", which was a decent remake of "From Dusk til Dawn", basically turned it's vampires into zombies. That's from both my wife and kid as soon as we finished watching it.
Elden Ring was great. I mean I wish it had an easier mode so I could have fought the bosses myself rather than just summoning in other people and watching them do it, but the 100 hours I spent grinding to get to the point where I could start playing the game were great. The best horse travel there ever was or ever will be. But not every game needs to look like it. I don't do souls likes.
I think it's partly Chinese games, partly Unreal Engine 5, and partly the zeitgeist. It will pass. Or at least diminish enough that 40 minute State of Plays don't look like 1 long game. We need more color. PS2 had it all, seemingly constantly. Now we wait for an Astrobot or Dragon Quest once every few years.

PS5 is now officially over 5 years old. Price drop is nice, should pick up a few more sales for Sony, but if you've waited this long to purchase a PS5 you might as well wait for a PS6. At least to find out if there is going to be a proper handheld variant. If it's just going to be another home console then maybe pick up a PS5 during a sale.
