Figured something like this was bound to happen. It was basically the first thing my wife said. 18 months to go.
The clock is ticking, it is over, it's just a matter of the date. I mean what if Intergalactic gets delayed to February 2028, are the just gonna go all digital with the last big PS5 game?
PS6 is a non-starter, I'm not even sure it will get a drive for bc.
Maybe AI can make a program to play old Sony discs on PC. If we can find any drives for those these days.
When you read the word "politician" and you just know the photo is going to look just like that. π
He has a good point and maybe some new laws will get passed in the EU about words like "sold" and "ownership" when all we're really getting is a lease or rental with a TBD end date. I still don't know how they get away with calling anything cloud streaming a purchase. Cloud streaming is as rental as rental can be. π€
Are they including in the 40mil the number of PS4 copies sold that were refunded on PS4? I mean there's no real reason for them not too, and its possible Sony themselves refunded the $ so they don't even know how many copies were refunded, but at the time it sounded like a lot.
40 mil for a new IP still seems like a ton to me so congrats to them.
@GreenyD Now that is some serious "back in the day" info right there. I had no idea. But if it could happen then, why not now? Surely discs are easier to manufacture than carts?
I'm no fan of EA and I'm not saying all of the game will be on the disc, maybe just a code in a box on a disc, but I have to think if only for it's yearly sports games alone they'd want the shelf space in places like Walmart in the US.
I still think PS5 games get physical releases - PS6 is a done deal - for an extra year or so, my wife thinks a company as big as EA might want to manufacture their own, but maybe not. Which is just wrong. I mean they are selling physical drives now for like what, $100, how can they keep doing that while saying no more discs? π€
But it's over, I'm not debating that, just the hard stopping point. I feel like there is ALWAYS a little wiggle room built into decisions this far out. Like Cohens Mets winning a World Series in 5 years.π
@get2sammyb You kind of started to touch on this in your article, but this really seemed like an unnecessary self own by Sony.
Most of us have realized for years all digital was the future, just look at PC and mobile, so not really surprised it's going to happen to consoles as well. But announcing a blanket no physical starting January 2028 just out of the blue like this, why?
Had they announce the PS6 as all digital that might have been bad,but surely not unexpected. And with PS5 probably getting games alongside it for a few years, just keep making those physical. What harm would that have done? A few more games for a few more years. But no PS6 announcement yet, and now no PS5 games physical in 18 months, why do that to themselves? What did they think would happen?
Must be a reason, but it better be a pretty good one to not wait for the PS6 announcement and keep making PS5 games physical. Which they probably will backtrack and keep doing anyway until 2029, just wait.
Anyone new here who wants to read up on what happened the last time Sony made a digital only handheld, the PSP Go, back in 2009, which I know is before a lot of you were here, there's a whole bunch of good articles about retailer blowback, the UMD to digital transition process or lack thereof, and how Sammy really liked it for what it was, which was a future most people weren't ready for, but it's here now.
@get2sammyb You own a Switch. If you've owned a Wii U you know what's going to happen, no physical BC, they just tell people to buy digital. I own more Wii U games in 4 years than Switch in 8 b/c I don't double dip and already owned most of the Switch games on Wii U. I'm probably the only Switch owner who doesn't own either MK8 or BotW b/c I already owned them.
So no, no disc drive for PS6. It's why they're telling people now, as a warning shot. "Stop buying physical media, you won't be able to play them on PS6." 18 months is a long warning.
Also, I haven't seen anyone besides me mention PSP Pro, despite several articles about this now. So I suspect you're currently writing one, about how Sony had a digital only handheld 15 or so years ago, so a digital only PS6 wouldn't be uncharted territory for them. I think it failed b/c the store went down for 28 days, you can write again about that as well. And if you haven't started writing it yet, you're welcome.π
Predictable. It's been heading this way for years. But it still sucks for people like me who prefer physical.
I borrow a lot of games from my library. My library actually has 3 different game sections - adult, teen, kid - located far apart in the library, and each has dozens of games. And I just bought Ghost of Yotei on disc this weekend (had $20 of Target credit from shopping). Doesn't mean I don't buy digital games, I do, a lot, but I borrow and buy physical as well.
So I don't know what I'll do now. Not get a PS6 was always tyhe plan, seems unnecessary as games will still get PS5 versions for years. Just got a Switch 2, which for me almost has better 3rd than 1st party support, so that could pick up some slack. I think the library has every Switch 2 game.
But it's still a sad day, even if it was inevitable. Pour 1 out for discs. It's PSP Go from here on out. Kids ask your parents.
I don't recall anything the past 6 or 7 years. I've been tested for dementia but I passed b/c I learned farm animal names in school and that's where all the points are, 1 per animal I kid you not, but anything the past few years is like a dream I know I've had but can't quite recall. I wouldn't have remembered you at all if I weren't an Oasis fan. No offense. π
Metric measurement - CM, mili, meter - makes way more sense than inches, feet, yards and miles, but the temps I like in farhenheit b/c there's more of them so I can measure by base 10.
@get2sammyb I just tried these 3 codes on my PS5 around noon on June 30th and they all say"This code has expired" in case you want to add a note or something.
If they need to put the PS5 into "low power mode" to run PS6 games on their new portable then how weak is their new portable? If the PS5 isn't as powerful as the PS6 then wouldn't the PS5 need to be in "high power mode" to play PS6 games, not low power mode?
If you took the PS5 innards right now and put them into a handheld by adding a battery and a screen how much would that portable cost? Now how much would it cost to miniaturize the innards of the yet to release PS6?
I'm calling it a PS5 Portable until I see it running PS6 games that the PS5 can't. So in a decade maybe.
Nishino said a lot of buzzwords without naming a single solid example in any game. Which makes me think he has no idea what AI is, what it does, or how his company is using it, and he's just regurgitating words without meaning any of it.π
I see FUJI I think Godzilla but I'm guessing it isn't that. π

I know metric and celsius is supposed to be a better system but I don't see how going from low 30s to high 30s can possibly represent what it needs to represent. 75 to 100 goes from perfect to deadly, or a C to an A grade. 32-37 is the same to me.π€·ββοΈ

Hardware is for games. If Sony is sitting on 2 or 3 PS6 exclusive games that cost a couple of hundred million each to make, then it NEEDS to sell the hardware to sell the games to recoup it's 1/2 Billion dollar expenditure. We're talking about the company that "knows generations" after all.
If however there are no big selling PS6 exclusives and it's just a better PS5 Pro than why bother?
I really miss when video gaming was about the games. It's just so much about that hardware now.π€
If they need to put the PS5 into "low power mode" to run PS6 games on their new portable then how weak is their new portable? If the PS5 isn't as powerful as the PS6 then wouldn't the PS5 need to be in "high power mode" to play PS6 games, not low power mode?

@Quintumply You could have at least linked to the article Sammy just wrote on Sunday saying how Sony's plan was to purposely sell less consoles to lose less money overall. π€·ββοΈ
I mean they can't plan on selling less consoles and then have people saying to be prepared b/c there will be less console b/c of GTA 6 when they just told us less consoles was already the plan. π
This just tells me Xbox owners are smarter than PS5 owners b/c they aren't pre-ordering a game code in a box 5 months in advance. π
I do appreciate the install base numbers and the rest of it. Since this is "retail" I'm assuming that means "physical", or at least what passes for it these days, and I feel like Xbox is more digital than physical in part b/c they're used to Gamepass. I know this won't be on GP but it may take some time for Xbox owners to even think about buying a physical box with a code in it.
I mean WTF is anyone paying $80-$100 for a box w/ a code in it? π€
I feel like everyone will be fine with Rockstar touching up a few posed screenshots, probably taken in a set "photo mode" like @Jackal9 said, but then if it were to come out that AI was used for the glow-up then everyone would lose their *****. π
"What's Worse, Bullshot or AI slop?" would be the next GTA 6 article. π
I saw the chicken head and thought this was that giant chicken game, but as weird as that games title was, it wasn't Romeo is a dead man. I honestly can't recall though. Heavenly Sword Mosou? π
Edit: Oh come on, "Project Windless", really. How is anyone supposed to remember that? Oh well maybe it will get a real name before release. Something cool like "Monado: Beginning of the World". π
I'm looking forward to Wolverine, but I may have skipped it if it were just a code in a box. Not that the disc will be complete, everything needs a dozen patches and updates these days, but 90% and playable on the disc is still something.
@8bitOG My kid went back to D2 last Tuesday or the Tuesday before maybe, them and a few of their friends, for 1 big last hurrah of some sorts b/c everything went free or on sale or something. I remember them making a big deal about it and playing it a lot since.
So that big D2 number may be related to something recent and not the norm. Marathon seems to be what it is though, which ain't much.
What he doesn't mention is historically the hardware has been a loss leader as they made the money back on game sales, then later PS+ subscriptions. So it's not like this is something totally unique or unheard of, it's just going back to the way things used to be.
I'm pretty sure they've done the math and whatever money they oise per console unit they expect to make up, and then some, on other ways. Sony isn't doing this as a charity for poor orphan children, they're planning on making more money later by losing some now.
I really hope GTA 6 doesn't get delayed out of November. Not b/c I'm in a rush to play it I still haven't played 5, but I could really do with a few less articles about it.
Wolverine releases in just 3 months, GTA 6 not for another 2 months after that, but just look at all the GTA 6 articles the past 2 days. I can't take 5 months of this, not to mention several more if it gets delayed. π
Pre-ordering a code in a box, or digital game they can't possibly run out of stock of, 6 months before the games release, if it doesn't get delayed again, is a choice. A choice between $80 and $100. π€
As was this comment, but at least it didn't cost me anything, and I know my comment won't be delayed.π
Raise the price of your game from the standard $70 to $80. Don't bother to put a physical disc in the box made for discs. Listen to people whine for 5 months. Profit when they all buy the empty box anyway.π€
@nomither6 B/c QTE isn't fun and leaves nothing to the imagination. Are you familiar with the Stanley Milgram studies? Probably not, or you'd understand. π
@Th3solution Thanks. It does seem like they're always something going on with installations and downloads. I probably won't take your advice b/c I'm too lazy to take the extra step, but it would probably help a little bit.
I do think the PS5 OS does do a pretty good job at handling multiple tasks involving the SSD. If we were still running off of HDD I would take your advice, all of mine are loud, grundy and slow, but thankfully SSDs seem to have been built with multi-tasking in mind. And my 300 fiber optic speed, which may be slow compared to everyone running 1,000 these days, is still fast and consistent enough, to not feel like a hindrance.
If the discs gave me the option to install the entire game from an internet download rather than the disc I'd probably take it, that's how slow the disc installs feel. Buying or borrowing PS4 games to install a PS5 version is an option I'll take when I can. Might even pick up GTA 5 that way. Some day. π

I mean WTF is anyone paying $80-$100 for a box w/ a code in it? π€
Re: GTA 6 Screenshots Unlikely to Be Running Real-Time on PS5, Tech Experts Warn
I feel like everyone will be fine with Rockstar touching up a few posed screenshots, probably taken in a set "photo mode" like @Jackal9 said, but then if it were to come out that AI was used for the glow-up then everyone would lose their *****. π
"What's Worse, Bullshot or AI slop?" would be the next GTA 6 article. π
Re: Romeo Is a Dead Man Getting Hotline Miami Crossover, Photo Mode in Free PS5 Update
Something cool like "Monado: Beginning of the World". π
Re: Don't Worry, Bub, Marvel's Wolverine PS5 Physical Version Has a Disc in the Box
I'm looking forward to Wolverine, but I may have skipped it if it were just a code in a box. Not that the disc will be complete, everything needs a dozen patches and updates these days, but 90% and playable on the disc is still something.
Re: PS5 Costs Too Much, But These New Xbox Price Increases Are Just Absurd
@LiamCroft "The entire consumer electronics industry is struggling with the current components crisis"
If you'd like another real world example of price increases Apple just announced some this morning, on par with these increases.

Re: Mini Review: Dead or Alive 6: Last Round (PS5) - Dead on Arrival
@get2sammyb Speaking of DOA, have you seen today's 7DSO update? It's a cross between DOA Beach Volleyball and Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash.
I mean I'm all for some fun in the sun but the change in direction to pure gooner (am I using that word right?) material gave me whiplash. π
Re: Bungie Confirms Studio Layoffs After Destiny 2 Content Ends
@8bitOG My kid went back to D2 last Tuesday or the Tuesday before maybe, them and a few of their friends, for 1 big last hurrah of some sorts b/c everything went free or on sale or something. I remember them making a big deal about it and playing it a lot since.
So that big D2 number may be related to something recent and not the norm. Marathon seems to be what it is though, which ain't much.
Re: Sony's Japan-Exclusive PS5 Is Losing Money, Cheaper Than a Switch 2
What he doesn't mention is historically the hardware has been a loss leader as they made the money back on game sales, then later PS+ subscriptions. So it's not like this is something totally unique or unheard of, it's just going back to the way things used to be.
I'm pretty sure they've done the math and whatever money they oise per console unit they expect to make up, and then some, on other ways. Sony isn't doing this as a charity for poor orphan children, they're planning on making more money later by losing some now.
tldr business as usual
Re: Rumour: GTA 6 Will Get a Disc-Based Physical Release After Its Initial Launch
I can't take 5 months of this, not to mention several more if it gets delayed. π
Re: Where to Pre-Order GTA 6 on PS5
@Slideaway1983 So I ran a search, b/c I'm funny like that, and we talked less than 2 years ago, Nov '24, which isn't even close to 10 years, but that's how my brain works these days with time concepts. And I should have known it wasn't 10 years b/c you only joined 2 years ago in August '24. So that's on me.π©

Re: Honkai: Star Rail's PokΓ©mon-Style Spin-Off Is Getting Closer, But Still No Word on PS5
@get2sammyb "art style of all these games is beginning to get a bit samey"
I figure it's a combination of that, and the IG algorithm being really really focused on my feed. π
Re: God of War Laufey Could Release as Early as February or March on PS5
This seems less like "NEWS" to me and more like"SPECULATION". And obvious speculation at that.
But if we're labeling this guess work as "NEWS" what do you call it when Sony or Santa Monica announces the date? "FACTS"? π€·ββοΈ
The time period works for me. I like to think I'm also pretty good at guessing. π
Re: Honkai: Star Rail's PokΓ©mon-Style Spin-Off Is Getting Closer, But Still No Word on PS5
Just saw this on Instagram, thought it was ANANTA. Though to be fair to it I think everygame on my IG feed is ANANTA these days. π
Guess that's what happens following all of these gacha games. Probably gonna pass on this one.
Re: Where to Pre-Order GTA 6 on PS5
@Slideaway1983 iPad, but I was reading the comments section anyway, so I'm going to assume it's an infinitesimally small difference between scrolling and posting for power consumption. And my time isn't worth anything b/c I'm retired.
(Just saw your user name. Did we have an entire discussion about Oasis like a decade ago? Man I really am old.π©)
It is kinda crazy how everything costs something though. π€
@Accipitridae Season pass code to inane rjejr comments included with all viewing of Pushsquare comments. No refunds though. π
@Nekomichu Yeah when the male lead falls in love with a dark skinned trans woman all the incels will be demanding their money back. π€£
Maybe that's why there's no disc in the case, Rockstar didn't want to get sued by all the people injured from smashing the discs into pieces. π
Re: You Can Upgrade to GTA 6's Ultimate Edition Whenever You Like
@roe Fair. π
GTA 6 All of the Current Game Edition $100
Re: You Can Upgrade to GTA 6's Ultimate Edition Whenever You Like
GTA 6 Most of the Game Edition $80
GTA 6 All of the Game Edition $100
Re: Where to Pre-Order GTA 6 on PS5
Pre-ordering a code in a box, or digital game they can't possibly run out of stock of, 6 months before the games release, if it doesn't get delayed again, is a choice. A choice between $80 and $100. π€
As was this comment, but at least it didn't cost me anything, and I know my comment won't be delayed.π
Re: GTA 6 Physical Edition Doesn't Come with Discs, It's a Code in the Box
Raise the price of your game from the standard $70 to $80.
Don't bother to put a physical disc in the box made for discs.
Listen to people whine for 5 months.
Profit when they all buy the empty box anyway.π€
Re: Wolverine PS5 Will Win Awards for These Outstanding Accessibility and Difficulty Options
@Th3solution "install size of 120 GB"
We're gonna need a bigger disc. #Jaws
Re: Wolverine PS5 Will Win Awards for These Outstanding Accessibility and Difficulty Options
@nomither6 B/c QTE isn't fun and leaves nothing to the imagination. Are you familiar with the Stanley Milgram studies? Probably not, or you'd understand. π

Re: Wolverine PS5 Will Win Awards for These Outstanding Accessibility and Difficulty Options
Some day. π
