The story and characters featured in Baldur's Gate 3 will return in a TV series from HBO that continues the plot after the events of the game's ending, the company has announced.
The live-action TV show deals with the "ramifications" of the events in the third game and features current characters as well as entirely new ones.
Craig Mazin, who is currently leading The Last of Us TV series (also from HBO), has signed up to serve as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the project. With no new Baldur's Gate game in the works, Mazin is said to have "freedom over the direction of the story".
It was him playing the game for "nearly 1,000 hours" that led Mazin to want to adapt Baldur's Gate 3 for television. "I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can."
However, Vincke and his team at Larian Studios aren't involved in the TV adaptation.
On social media, Vincke said the many endings of Baldur's Gate 3 were designed to lead to new stories. "I'm eager to find out which ones Craig and his team will pick. He's reached out for a chat so we'll have the opportunity to tell him our thoughts."
The deal on the TV adaptation just closed, so the first season of shows is still a long way away. Mazin explained he's planning on reaching out to voice actors from Baldur's Gate 3 "with ideas for them to participate in the TV adaptation, if possible". This could open the door to the likes of Jennifer English, Neil Newbon, and more being part of the show.
According to the head of television at Hasbro Entertainment, Gabriel Marano, the fans have been "eagerly awaiting an adaptation of Baldur’s Gate". Have you? Let us know in the comments below.

"Craig Mazin"
"Larian Studios aren't involved"
No thanks
Some times, people need to realise not everything needs a movie/show adaptation... Like just leave it be
I'm sure casting will be incredible./s
That's really exciting. I have complete faith in HBO.
Not interested. I think a mature D&D show could be great, even in the Baldur's Gate world but I don't need it to follow the game and having Craig Mazin leading it when the only thing I like of his is Chernobyl (Last of Us had good moments, but wasn't a fan overall) doesn't do it for me.
Can't wait to not see a new show made by Craig "I'm gunna be a dad" Mazin
I’m intrigued, The Last of Us is a superb adaptation, but this also seems a bizarre choice.
The amount of variables involved, whichever they go for it’ll disappoint fans. Or they go for a multiverse, which has been a bit overdone and can negate stakes if not handled well.
Also if they can’t get the OG voice actors for the main cast, fans will hate it. AND you’re dealing with the notorious WotC licensing.
Still, intriguing!
Hmm, I'm on the fence about this one. BG3 is an all time classic and it will be interesting to follow the characters after the conclusion of the game but I do wish things would be left alone sometimes.
I also think that the amount of stick Craig Mazin gets is utterly bizarre, just so weird.
So fan fiction.. Or non fan slop rather.
I’m surprised at the negative reception for this announcement. Perhaps I’m in the minority with liking The Last of Us, but a high end HBO production in the Baldur’s Gate universe sounds incredibly appealing to me.
I share the concern about what ending scenario will be used as canon, and how they utilize characters from the game, given most of the characters’ fates, both NPC and companions, are variable and determined by player choice throughout. It’s tough to discuss specifics due to spoilers, but I’m incredibly intrigued and hope to see my favorite characters show up and see how they’re doing after the ending of the game.
Mazin having played the game for 1000 hours is encouraging as well, since he’ll have a solid foundation to start from.
Only watching this if there’s a freaky bear scene in it.. lmao jk.. but seriously, no one asked for this.. couldn’t get an hour into the demo personally.. the game was not for me.. you gotta be a super duper nerd to appreciate this game imo.. and super nerds don’t like when you f*#! with their stuff..

Sydney Sweeney for shadowheart
Why? Take the hundred million dollars you're about to spend and invest it in the next actual Baldur's Gate game instead of fan fiction in an inferior format.
They still announce these shows like gamers should be honoured that the sacred realm of TV is somehow validating the things they like. Pffft.
Last of Us was good.... if you didn't play the games which were superior in every way. (Part 1 anyway)
Dude kind of ruined TLOU imo. So this is very disappointing
I'm really conflicted by this.... I adore BG3, but honestly I don't think anyone is crying out for this TV show to happen.
It has huge potential, but the recent mismanagement of TLoU is a very sobering wake-up call to what the reality will likely be for this project.
Also - the VA work in BG3 is just so outstandingly great, that I genuinely think it would be impossible to cast (if indeed they use the main 'player' characters as a basis for the plot)
I can't fathom anyone else being Astarian over Neil Newbon.... or Shadowheart outside of Jen English. Those performances really breathed such a life into those characters, not to mention Lae'Zel / Gale / Karlach.... all of them fantastic.
Nice to see Sven backing it publicly, as I can imagine he probably has similar panic attacks as to the havoc that Craig can wreak with this IP lol.
This could be somewhat of a dream HBO-show for me. Looking forward to see how it turns out.
This also confirms that HBO will leave behind the Last of Us, I think. Part 2 polarized the fanbase and it was clearly part of why people avoided/disliked season 2.
@Starkei I’m sure Hasbro/Wizards of the coast already has early plans for BG4 along with this TV show.
@RBMango I don’t know why you expect Larian to be involved. It not their IP or universe. They aren’t required to be involved with the universe going forward. They was only contracted to make one game, and continue the work that BioWare and plenty of studio have touched before.
A TV show that rakes place AFTER a game that probably most tv viewers haven't played is a choice.
Think I'll stick to Vox Machina and Mighty Nein for ny D&D tv.
But if my snarky, aloof but good-hearted, pansexual bard isn't the lead character, then what's even the point?
@Oram77 If entertainment exists in some form, chances are high that some CEO is shoehorning it into a longform TV show format, and trying to sell you a subscription service to watch it on.
@AverageGamer Because almost all of what made BG3 tick was Larian and their writers.
@Andee Yup - isn't capitalism beautiful.
@RBMango What are you talking about? The writing was absolutely horrible. Cringey with ton of plotholes.
What “made it tick” is that its somewhat faithful representation of the stupidity that is 5th gen. So normies were all over it.
DEFINETLY not the writing lol.
Last of us casting wasn't the greatest so I have no faith in this
@rjejr glad someone referred to there already being two pretty good DnD series already in existence.
I guess Fallout series is set after all the games but it's set in the world rather than using the core characters I guess.
He already made a crappy show about a game that I love, why not another?
All that's left is MGS3.
@species What's a "normie"? Someone that doesn't play D&D?
I don't, but I love the Forgotten Realms and I loved BG3 for it's story and characters. Gameplay was fine, but Divinity 2 had a better gameplay and it didn't use any D&D rules.
Get ready for Mazin not getting some characters and shelving a lot of aspects about the game, cause the guy seems to despise video games
They guy absolutely wrecks what could have been one of the greatest tv shows ever within 1 season, hated by all, so HBO say let's take this guy🤦♂️
I'd be more interested if it was co-created by crazy D&D fans like critical role.
Late to the party, but just started this game. Absolute gem! I'm sure HBO would do a great job, but everything would need to be spot on. None of this LOU rubbish haha
I’ll only watch if it is 60 frames per second
BG4, give it to Larian, print money.
This on the other hand…can’t go well.
A) there are so many ways a show, that isn’t a game, gets ruined, canceled, and never picked up again. b) Not having Larian studios involved will guarantee a level of “creative license “ to alter and ruin something crucial. C) playing an awesome game a lot does not mean you can create a show and adhere to the lore faithfully. And D) that is a game specifically where a majority of fans have strong, non- swayable, feelings on things. IMHO this is a mistake.
@Athrum Yee, i would even extend it to people not playing any proper RPG with actually good writing. Its not necesseraly derogative term i think, at least not for me.
Imagine if youre a football fan for example and you took me to the worst game in history, I, not even knowing any rules, nor watched any good plays would be entertained just because the ball is moving.
Another good example is the Fallout show, completely crapping on the legacy and story of the old games, but “normies” are entertained just because they show a power armor or a nuka cola.
The BG3 characters are all pretry badly written, albeit covered by stellar voice acting, with exception of maybe Astarion and Laezel(both still subpar tho). All with their millenial jokes and jargon absolutely kill any sense of immersion.
It all comes out in act3 where, for some reason, the devs really had to tie it to the old BG games with the dead three making the villains flat as all hell and introducing several plot holes.
I agree with you on Divinity tho, while also pretty subpar writing, it has some interrsting characters and definetly held by combat that is actually optimized for a game instead of tabletop dnd.
@species Just out of curiosity, what you would consider an RPG with good writing?
@Athrum Disco Elyssium, Planescape Torment, Witcher 3 are pretty much top of the line in that regard imo.
Also like New Vegas, Mass effect to some extend and BG2.
@RBMango Like other have said, what made BG3 was the faithful representation of the gameplay, but not necessarily the writing. But BG isn't larian universe nor do they own the characters in the game. Thinking that Larian needs to be involved is nonsense.
Make all fight scenes turn-based. Make the show as boring and monotonous as the game!
Also. You folks who hate TLOU show. You think too highly of yourselves. Just because you make the most noise doesn’t mean you outnumber those who like the show lol. The rest of us just enjoy it and don’t spend our time online trying to convince others to agree with us.
What a weird decision. This will definitely anger many fans by basically telling them their endings are non-canon. Furthermore a show in the Forgotten Realms has almost infinite possibilities but, instead they chose to follow the characters from the game who's story and character development is already finished? This just screams creative bankruptcy and desperation. Just make a show with new characters with the tone of BG3 why's that so hard?
'The adventures of Scratch and the Owlbear Cub'.
Reading these comments, yeah im never commenting here haha
@dskatter Larian has stated they have no interest in BG4 or working in that world again. They want to do original ideas.
@Deadhunter This in no way invalidates my statement that a Larian-made BG4 would print money.
I know Craig Mazin was the primary showrunner for the TLoU show, but I am surprised that the complaints about TLoU season 2 never seem to mention Neil Druckman. He’s the only common denominator when it comes to frustrated fans with both the TLoUp2 game (seemingly 1/2 to 2/3 of fans when considering tloup1 vs tloup2 sales) and sea 2 of the show.
