Prince of Persia

There's going to be a warranted doom and gloom surrounding any future Ubisoft game reveals after yesterday's news of cancellations and delays.

The Prince of Persia community has been hit hardest after The Sands of Time Remake was scrapped, but according to the team behind the project, this doesn't mean the series as a whole is done. As part of a statement sharing the reasons behind the cancellation, it added that the "decision does not mean we're stepping away from the franchise".

Of course, it's difficult to believe after Wednesday's news of six Ubisoft title cancellations and a further seven delayed projects. The move was made as the French publisher undergoes a "major company reset" in an attempt to "return to exceptional levels of quality" in the open world adventure and Games as a Service genres.

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was deemed not to have reached this new level of quality. "While the project had real potential, we weren't able to reach the level of quality you deserve, and continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit," the studio said.

According to those who were working on the project, this doesn't mean Ubisoft is "stepping away" from the Prince of Persia series entirely.

Even though The Sands of Time Remake had been facing development struggles for years, the franchise as a whole has actually been doing well as of late. The 2D Metroidvania game Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was one of 2024's best games, and The Rogue Prince of Persia is also another solid entry for the IP.

However, the issues arise when you want to play the Prince of Persia titles released before them. None, such as the PS2 trilogy or the PS3 title, are playable on PS5 or PS4, as they're not part of PS Plus. You would need a PS3 console to play through those games again.

Following its restructuring, Ubisoft announced its game development will be run by five Creative Houses. The Prince of Persia IP is part of Creative House 4, along with Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil.
