Normally, this sort of thing is the remit of American sports enthusiast Sammy Barker, but he's off gallivanting, so it falls to this author to cover MLB The Show 26, which has just dropped a bunch of new info.
San Diego Studio's annual baseball sim returns on 17th March 2026, and with just over a month to go, Sony has released the first gameplay trailer, covering many new additions to the game:
The PS Blog goes into more detail, and it sounds like there are plenty of new additions to this year's entry.
In Road to the Show, there are 11 new college teams represented, the NCAA Men’s College World Series format and bracket is included, and there are new goals to aim for as you progress your career.
Additionally, there's something called Road to Cooperstown, in which you'll "Start from high school, build your legacy, and see if you can make it all the way to the Hall of Fame".
Diamond Dynasty has some new features too, including the return of World Baseball Classic content, an overhaul to mini-seasons, and plenty more to sink your teeth into.
The Negro Leagues storyline continues in Season 4, and Franchise mode has been updated to make it more flexible and approachable, including a refreshed trade logic system.
Finally, here are the main notes with regard to gameplay updates:
- Big Zone hitting is a new batting interface for players of all skill levels
- Play at three new stadiums including: The Tokyo Dome, Estadio Hiram Bithorn, and Terrapin Park
- Bear Down Pitching gives you more control in the clutch situations
- Hits per 9 innings and strikeouts per 9 innings attribute splits and pitch repertoire usage rate
- Reaction rating attributes for fielders (left, right, forward, and back)
- Catcher Pop Time attribute
- Plate Coverage Indicator sensitivity slider for more control over your PCI
- Added over 500 new gameplay animations
- Re-captured all knee down catcher animations which includes throws, blocked balls, wild pitches and more
Pre-orders for the game are live now, and if you nab the Digital Deluxe edition, you'll be able to play four days in advance of the official release date.

Sammy is gallivanting

Baseball - it's just silly boys rounders.
My only wish is for more detailed stats in franchise. They track them, but don't show them. For example for pitchers, you can find the batting average allowed vs righties or lefties when a pitcher is warming up on the mound or bullpen, but you can’t go and actually find that in the stats tab throughout the season. Or for fielding stats when they play different positions. I dont understand why they don't show that. Baseball is all about stats.
I’d like a return to the ps4 era with the real park flyby they stitched into the game , felt slick. But I’m up for this , playing as a starting pitcher only means I’m always so far behind on RTTS it’s staying to become in funny
The engine just feels so old hat now. You could put The Show 16 alongside this one and could barely tell the difference.
"gallivanting"
The act of spending so many hours playing so many Gatcha games you die from sleep depravation and lack of eating.
I think Sammy's been on a 2 year bender of doing just that. 😂
Still not over Judge being back on the cover. Will be checking the news every day for his season ending injury. 😎
I'm not a big graphics guy but this looks so similar to the past several years. Everything looks too smooth, especially the infield. I'm not interested in modes outside of franchise, so any improvements to that or to the core gameplay experience will be welcome. It just looks outdated, which is disappointing.
I wish they would bring back sounds of the show. They never said why they removed it, it was the best feature. When you spend a lot of time in sports games you have to listen to the always terrible music selection they have. I was hoping for more Franchise improvements but it seems they changed the trade AI? what an improvement. Every year they just continue to disappoint me. I think this will be the first show in years i skip.
So as someone who has never played this series before, is there a reason the game looks like an old early to mid gen PS4 game in that trailer?
Essentially been the same game for 20 years; I grew tired of the lack of substantial changes by 2014. If you want a more fun title that actually feels more like you're playing baseball, rather than stiffly swinging and moving awkwardly around, play Suoer Mega Baseball 4 (and build your own players and teams to match the real MLB ones, if you want to do so).
I love this game and usually buy it every year. However, I think I am going to skip it this year. Spending $70 a year for incremental changes at best is just not worth it. I do think it is hard to make major changes when the game is this good, but I just can't justify it anymore.
All good updates(on paper), but the game still needs a visual update.
Its not bad looking, just doesn't look much, if any better than the ps4 version from 10 years ago.
Im likely going to put off my annual purchase and go bi or tri annual like i do now with madden/nba2k.
I love baseball, but im more of a play some matches or the ultimate team mode(forget the name for the show version) than playing from hs onward.
That said, im sure itl be great as it is every year.
@nessisonett Based on the comments, it seems im not alone in wanting a graphic overhaul.
Id be happy with an overhauled mlb25 to be honest. Just fewer plastic looking players and stadiums
@Runex2121 It’s the physics as well as the graphics, it’s too cartoony with not enough weight behind it. Things like fielding are basically automatic too, you walk underneath a shadow and you catch it. Running too feels hands off. There needs to be more active gameplay with more weighty gameplay and it’ll be great.
There was once a time where the Show was the best looking sports game on the market, clearly those times are way in the past!
Ever since it went multiplatform it seems the time they spent innovating is being used to port and optimize the game for all the platforms.
I inadvertently moved to only purchasing The Show every other year. I like to play every game and every pitch in franchise mode. Without year 2 year saves it's almost impossible to get more than a year completed otherwise especially when you play other games. Would be nice if you could select season length like you can in NBA 2K.
