HBO's TV adaptation of The Last of Us may come to an end after its third season, a quote from the firm's CEO suggests.
As part of a Deadline article, chairman and CEO Casey Bloys is asked if The Last of Us (and Hacks) will be finished once season three has been released. Bloys responded: "It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them."
The third season of The Last of Us, which is confirmed to be happening, will adapt Abby's side of The Last of Us 2, and now presumably, also include the Santa Barbara sequences at the end of the PS5, PS4 game. It's due out in 2027.
Previously, it was said that director Craig Mazin was debating whether to split the rest of the current story up into two seasons, and Bloys was "following Craig's lead on that" decision. Now, it appears the decision has been made to go with one longer season to see out the plot.
With no third game from Naughty Dog in sight, this is where the current known story of The Last of Us ends. The studio is working on its new IP, Intergalactic, which is still at least a year away from releasing.

Wasn’t it always supposed to end after season 3? I don’t know why this news is so surprising.
After the horrendous 2nd season, i don't even want to see the rest of this thing
If only there was a part 3....
Probably for the best, isn’t it well *****?
I'm half surprised we're still getting season 3. How far along in development is it now?
Edit: Well it looks like it is happening in a few months. Not sure I care anymore but who knows where my brain will be by 2027.
That’s not a bad thing tbh. Season 2 fell off massively and I don’t see it recovering. Same as any third game that comes along (unless they start again with a whole new cast & writers)
It was over before it even began
I expect viewership to collapse. Any appetite for this show was already waning during season 2.
Season two was a let down to see it win at the game awards over twisted metal season 2 which wasn't even nominated was a joke.
@Zeroo if it had been doing massive numbers, they'd be handing Druckmann a blank cheque and asking him to help write a season 4 and 5.
Wrap it up! Season 2 was mostly just disappointing
Well, the show was pretty bad and underwhelming, especially considering TLoU2 is objectively the best videogame ever created (not my personal favorite or anything), so good
@Frmknst You forgot the sarcasm tag at the end of your commemt.
This is what happens when you depart from the tone of the game so much. Should have kept Neil Druckmann on as show runner.
Still I hope they might bring Timothee Chalamet in for a small role.
The good news: it will end after the third season.
The bad news: there will be a third season.
It was a monumental mistake not to film both seasons back to back or just have one long season to cover the whole of Part 2 story, the second season being bafflingly written plus that dumb unnecessary cliffhanger killed any momentum the series had.
That last episode made Craig Mazin's previous good work look like an accident.
Considering the second series is one of the worst shows I've watched over the last few years... yeah no loss there.
I wonder if Catherine O'Hara's character was supposed to be in season three? RIP to her, she's been in many classic shows and films.
It doesn't surprise me one bit. I knew it would off in the second series cos it was already dealing with a deeply flawed story and they change enough to improve it.
