@__jamiie Because different systems have different storefronts. On PlayStation it is very easy and convenient to buy games digitally, and especially desirable during large sales. Nintendo on the other hand is known for quite high prices on their online store, which pushes customers into retail.
The only way you can compare sales is by using total number of games sold.
I played it twice just to platinum it (because I skipped a rune). Very enjoyable experience, the one that resonated with some experiences from my life. Wouldn't play it again though; the game isn't really designed to be replayable.
I'm going to wait for the sequel, and if it won't be a timed exclusive (which I think is a possibility once Microsoft start searching for the ways to recoup money they were giving away previous years to get Gamepass off the ground) then maybe I will pay $15 for one month just to play it. Depends on how good it will be, of course.
@MaccaMUFC Exclusives end where money begins. If sales of Death Loop will be good on PlayStation, meaning if it would become the #1 money making platform for the game, then its supposed sequel will have high chance to not be exclusive.
@Divergent95 It was an unsubstantiated rumour. What's funny, people disregarded the official statement that said that the studio is pleased with sales.
Many of the problems outlined in the article are not exclusive to indie developers. Promotion through Sony's YouTube channel, developer portals, documentation β that's for everyone.
The rest of grievances doesn't strike me as platform specific; but rather indie specific. You don't get a lot of face to face with managers if you are small. Yow will be featured way less on the most lucrative storefront pages. You will miss out on many of grand sales, which are promotions too.
Honestly, I don't get why it is framed as Sony's problem with Indies. Seems more like Sony's problem with devs in general.
"If Platform X doesn't like your game, no fanfare no feature no love. There is nothing you can do to fix this."
As a customer I love this. I don't want to open PlayStation Store to be greeted with games that payed their way to be featured, rather than earned it with product quality.
Would take "super FPS" over "super resolution" any day. When TV pixels are squeezed to the size of being indistinguishable, resolution becomes an empty word. Dynamics (FPS) and world details is what matters
@BrainHacker That's a misconception that we won't be able to play future Bethesda games. We aren't married to the console. And Microsoft makes games easily accessible via GamePass.
My disappointment is that there won't be a PS5 optimised version. With haptics and instant loading. But of course I will be able to play it. Through XCloud on GamePass, if nothing else π However, the desire to play future Bethesda games did decrease.
@Ogbert It doesn't actually matter, why. People do pay full price, as is evident from quarterly reports. Microsoft has yet to prove that putting a game which costs north of $100m to make on GamePass will pay off.
People will still be buying PS5 games (that is, I expect the platform to maintain top revenue among consoles) and additionally they will be getting MS exclusives for cheap. It is Xbox as a console that has to worry, as their revenue stream will be cut, at least in the first few years.
Unlike music and video, games as a subscription service has yet to prove its profitability.
@nessisonett Trailer ends with announcement that it will be available on game pass, day one. And it can be played via XCloud, internet speed permitting
@Mellors86x That's not how pricing works. People got used to buying games around Β£60, so it stays there, regardless of media. Obviously, publishers are trying to nudge it higher, hence Β£70 is becoming the new norm. The only way prices are going to fall is gamers stopping buying games priced at Β£70. It doesn't seem to be happening.
The game is rather good. Power fantasy done right, through the whole campaign.
However, the end game turned out to be anything but. Even disregarding the bugs, you are a weakling, grinding endlessly for the gear that will allow you to kill trash mobs a bit faster. Until you max up your build, the combat becomes a slog. And you won't be able to play the way you want, as there are few viable builds with viable abilities, the rest is being useless. In short, not fun at all.
Been a PC gamer for life myself, until I bought a PS4 in 2014. And I got hooked with hassle-free gaming. I can just turn on the console and start playing. Not spend hours in game configs and graphics drivers settings to fix a frame drop in a single area of the game. So, I dropped PC gaming altogether.
I see from the comments that for many it is hard to understand why disks in retail may cost less than digital copies which aren't physically produced.
First, nothing is priced at the cost. Everything is priced at the market rate, and you drop the price down to move more copies.
Second, retail stores have more immediate competition from second hand games market. They have to drop prices. But PSN is affected by that as well. That's why older games are offered for less there.
Is up to game developers to patch the game, not Sony. What Sony can do is to follow Microsoft's lead in allowing for FPS boost in compatible games, that requires no patching. I'm strongly against doing fake HDR though, because it is guaranteed to break original artistic vision.
The policy it seems is aimed at free to play games. And Epic has no choice but to play by the rules set by Sony, because PSN is their biggest moneymaker.
I bought it because I liked Automata, and because I think Yoko Taro is a genius. There will be no negative surprises for me as I spent hours of watching the original gameplay, so I'm happy with the purchase.
But I wonder why won't PushSquare buy themselves a copy? Is it a policy to only play publisher-provided games?
@TrueAssassin86x What you call supporting is a huge amount of work. Unless the game was designed from inception to be very portable, moving it from PS3 to PS4 will cost a lot of money.
Back in the day I purchased the complete edition, but never got to play it. Now I have PS5 and stopping myself from playing it in hopes that remaster, or a simple frame rate unlock, isn't far off.
I think the title is wrong, there's no contradiction. Running the service is unsustainable, as your only source of income is a modest subscription fee, as you don't release your own games outside. Sony and others meanwhile can enjoy cool millions for directly selling their games to the service, as Microsoft is trying to boost subscription level.
This game is going to be day 1 purchase for me. I enjoyed the demo and can see the potential. Most import, this is a kind of game that I like, shooter with awesome powers.

Re: There's Not a Single PS5, PS4 Game in the Japanese Sales Charts
As time passes, retail-only game sales charts become increasingly meaningless.
I doubt Sony has any regrets. Just look at their quarter results.

Re: Deathloop Goes Gold, Firming Up PS5 Launch Next Month
The game looks fun. But its release sandwiched between Tsushima and Death Stranding director's cuts. So, I'll wait for review here.
Re: PS5 Firmware Update Will Improve Create Mode Functionality
Personally I'm waiting for Sony to support gameplay recording in H.265. If it is possible at all, as hardware encoding capability is required.
Re: Death Stranding Sells Over Five Million Copies Across PS4, PC
@Divergent95 That is the unsubstantiated rumour I was talking about. That it is below Sony's expectation.
Re: Death Stranding Sells Over Five Million Copies Across PS4, PC
5 millions is absolutely incredible for a niche game. Comparing it to the games designed for mass audience is bollocks.

Re: Dead Space Remake Confirmed for PS5 in Super Short Teaser
I will buy it if there are no microtransactions. If there are, then EA haven't learned the lesson why the series died.
Re: Ubisoft Will Reveal a New Tom Clancy Game Later Today
Have no idea about the game, but it will be a 'live service'
Re: With the Steam Deck Announced, This Is What a Next-Gen PSP Could Be
@Discol76 People buy it to play core Nintendo games, regardless of portability

Don't be cheap. DLCs cost money. It isn't a simple PS5 upgrade.
Re: Random: Hideo Kojima Uses a Hermen Hulst Mousepad
Weird. It's a Mac keyboard with a numerical keypad. Granted, it can work with any computer, but I wonder what Kojima-san is rocking
