The PS5 fandom can be a divisive place at the best of times, but it seems almost everyone’s in agreement on one thing: Sony’s right to scrap its PC ports.

In a Bloomberg report earlier this week, it was claimed that PlayStation will cease releasing its tentpole first-party exclusives on storefronts like Steam, although it will continue to port live service games, like Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, to other platforms.

In a Push Square poll reacting to this news, a whopping 71% of you felt PlayStation was making the right move by cancelling its PC ports. A further 7% said they weren’t sure, while just 22% thought the company was making the wrong decision.

It’s perhaps worth acknowledging that this is inherently biased data; it reflects the feeling of Push Square users and thus hardcore PS5 fans. We imagine we’d get a different result on, say, PC Gamer.

But it’s still important to appreciate how Sony’s power users feel about this, because they’re the people buying expensive PS Plus subscriptions and all of their software through the PS Store. This is the user base that contributes heavily to PlayStation’s bottom line.

It’s rare for fans to be united like this, but there has been a feeling that the Japanese giant has been diluting the value of its brand and eroding its unique selling point.

With the return of true exclusivity for major single player series, like Ghost of Yotei and Saros, the value of the PS5 can no longer be questioned.

Of course, Sony won’t have come to this conclusion based solely on the whims of fans. It’ll have hard evidence to support its decision, presumably proving the juice is simply not worth the squeeze.

Over the past few years, PC ports contributed just 1.5% to its overall revenue, with the vast majority of its record-breaking income generated by its own ecosystem.

Ultimately, it sounds like the platform holder has made its decision. And while it could always reverse course in the future, it looks like it’ll be putting its focus on its own format for the foreseeable future.
