Square Enix has lofty ambitions for Forspoken, its new PlayStation 5 console exclusive action role-playing game. Speaking as part of a puff piece for AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, Luminous Productions studio boss Takeshi Aramaki explained that the developer’s goal is “to achieve the highest quality visuals ever seen in an open world game”. Given the context of the video, Aramaki goes on to explain how the DLSS alternative is helping the team to achieve that.
To simplify an extremely complicated algorithm, FidelityFX Super Resolution utilises machine learning to reconstruct lower resolution images and output them with more clarity. This means that, in essence, games can achieve 4K without demanding the computational power required to output the resolution natively. This gives more headroom to developers to create bigger, denser worlds, while still ensuring good image quality at 60 frames-per-second.
“I believe AMD's GPU Open philosophy is raising the entire gaming industry's technical standards, which in turn benefits all players,” Aramaki added. “We can't wait for players to get their hands on Forspoken and experience the next-gen graphics that were made possible by FSR.” Assuming you can’t wait, though, there are some (very) brief new gameplay tidbits interspersed throughout the video above, which should whet your appetite ahead of the title’s next big showcase.

Judging by the gameplay footage in that video it’s not hard to create a good visual game if it’s literally the same terrain and endless trees throughout haha..
It does look very very pretty. Hopefully it actually comes out at some point!
Intrigued to see more of this game.
I just hope it's not a boring, empty open world cause I don't care if it is the best looking open world if the open world itself isn't good
I'm burnt out on Open World games now tbh.
@nessisonett Apparently Jan 2022
@RubyCarbuncle I'm afraid of this happening to me. Especially now that I've started playing Assasin's Creed games.
This one looks very interesting though. I'm still excited to hear more about it.
I like a shiny thing but hopefully they spend a similar amount of effort making the gameplay as good as it can be.
Its already got the most poorly named open world game in the bag. Should have stuck with Project Athia. Still looking forward to it!
Looking forward to see more of it.
I love open world games but it'll take more variety in environments than what they've shown to get there.
I wonder, could AMD's FSR work on PS4/PS4 Pro ? I know it works on a lot of cards but those machines are ooooold.
Gameplay is more important than how shiny it looks. You could have the best looking game in the world but if it is like controlling a headless turkey then it is all for nothing.
Must have been filmed before Forza horizon 5 reveal😉
Very nice. Also, AMD hit it out of the park with FidelityFX
Rather play a New open world game, than yet another 2D "rogue like game" or another rehashed old game.
Tons of fun exploring Ghost of Tsushima and AC Valhalla worlds. Keep an eye, see how this one turns out.
Do we know will stay exclusive or is it a timed exclusive?
Looks really promising so fingers crossed this is a must buy!
@RubyCarbuncle Every time I feel burnt out by openworld games, I just launch RDR2 and I get energized all again.
What a world... what a game... it still beggars belief how it came to exist!
@RubyCarbuncle can't agree more. It's extremely difficult to make open-world games that don't feel boring quickly. RDR2 nailed it, but not everyone can do it.
@Bleachedsmiles you mean horizon forbidden west not forza horizon 5 .
@RubyCarbuncle for me, open world games are bittersweet. The exploration, to see what's over the next horizon or hidden in that far off cave, etc, is the siren's call for me. But I rarely, if ever, finish these types of games. Fo4, prime example of never finishing the main quest, but I keep searching for that next thing I haven't seen. Whether it was the car Stonehenge or coming across that murder room or the radio signal, calling for help, only to find I was too late. Or witcher III, trying to complete the map(cuz ocd), before even leaving the first area, then coming across a whale carcass, wondering "well, what's bigger than that thing?"
@Bleachedsmiles its a car game though 😂
@Olmaz because its empty
@vapidwolf Really? You find RDR2's world empty? Fascinating, as I really found it to be one of the most organic, natural open-world I have ever played. Nothing seemed out of place, just there for convenience sake, while, at the same time, every element was part of the bigger gameplay.
You can of course just ride with the feeling you've encountered nothing, but if you just look closefully, so many things are happening. Just like when you go a road trip. You could focus on the ride, or on the world around you.
RDR2 still holds this title, in my opinion.
Thank goodness, even Japanese studios are coming onto the 60 fps train. Pleaaaaaaase standardize this! I much prefer just chucking on a console game and it runs perfect than dealing with PC garbage. PS5 been a blessing so far as I am normally a PC only gamer.
Open world games are great, we need more!
If you're not a fan, well there are plenty of other types of games made to suit all tastes.
What I've seen so far of this game is very intriguing and looking forward to learning and seeing more as the months progress.
B-b-but ''sInGlE pLaYeR GaMeS ArE dYiNg!"
Good. Now, do you aim to make the best game in general too? Because that would be more interesting.
Oh **** what the **** a mother******* dragon
i love open world games!
Would take "super FPS" over "super resolution" any day. When TV pixels are squeezed to the size of being indistinguishable, resolution becomes an empty word. Dynamics (FPS) and world details is what matters
@Total_Weirdo
24 month timed exclusive for console.
PC release is day and date with PS5 I believe.
Maybe it's just me, but a Square-Enix game that comes out and says "our focus is on the graphics" doesn't exactly fill me with determination. The mediocre if I'm optimistic naming isn't helping that feeling. It all feels like a trendy design in search of a game.
I am sure they'll RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 give their best but you know, there was a game that will hold that trophy for some time, if only I could remember its name.
@blinx01 It says it's a console exclusive, not timed. Where did you get the timed bit from and how long it would be?
@nomither6 dude, knock, knock, it's 2021. No one has been saying that single player games are dying, probably since 2016. Were you in a coma?
@TheDudeElDuderino I've seen a few comments on this site and did some analyzing . I'm not mocking gamers everywhere , just the few here.
@ApostateMage aaaah, only now I see you beat me to it. RDR2 is something else. Not only does it look the best, it's animated to perfection aaaaand... wait for it... the world actually feels and presents itself as alive. They can try to outdo RDR2 but by the time they are ready we'll have a native ps5 version of RDR2 which will melt eyes and brains.
@nomither6 I must have blocked them... I never see such comments on Push Square...🤔
@TheDudeElDuderino i mean , i could be taking it too far now , lol. its like a meme to me at this point ; but , yeah, i might as well stop, haha. don't mind me.
Looking forward to this one 🙂 hopefully gameplay is king and the graphics are the icing on top 😎
@Olmaz yeah but its a video game and completely different from real life,it was empty.
@vapidwolf hmmmm ok... not sure I got you there, care to develop more?
I'd rather it was trying to be the most fun game ever.
Would also rather they were trying to have the best soundtrack ever.
Graphics don't cure my boredom.
Is this a sponsored post? I hope you got kickbacks.
@TheDudeElDuderino
He's making fun of that mindset
Even though it’s a crossgen title, the PS5 version of Horizon: Forbidden West looks significantly better than Forspoken in my opinion, and both are open-world.
@PegasusActual93 oh I know, my question was: does this mindset even exist anymore?
@itsfoz nothing is enough for some people, always one who still outs a game down even before they have played it
Like people don't realise this is about AMD and FSR announcement? It's a good thing they are being straightforward about it since it was leaked a week ago as one of the first games using FSR.
Not sure why Digital Foundry was downplaying it now. (If that could help ridicule DF zooming in to try and find out some 1080p pixels in some frame and being loud about it that would be a good thing haha)
I'm getting intrigued by this game. We ll probably get more gameplay trailer soon.
really excited about this one, hope it's good
Square Enix "Forspoken Aims to Be the Best Looking Open World Game Ever"
Horizon Forbidden West "Hold my beer"
@RubyCarbuncle yeah, pretty much. Sometimes, I just enjoy a very linear, on-rails style shooter to cleanse my palette
Black Desert looked amazing but played like a dog so pretty graphics do not a great game make.
Let's hope that it plays well.
@Enigk I kind of want a game about a headless turkey now 🤔
@Odium The folks who made Untitled Goose Game should get straight on it. Headless Turkey Game. Marketing has begun.
At least this won't also be on PS4. Finally a developer wanting to make a new gen game rather than a cross gen game.
there is literally no point in doing these big sandbox games... gta5/online, rdr2/online are prime examples of building big open world games with nothing in them to do... i want buildings, shops, homes to go into... devs need to start making a smaller scale map & packing it full of places to go into & interact with
@sanderson72 True, Black Desert does look good standing still, but once you move...the crazy amount of pop-in/clipping hurt the eyes at times. Granted i was on a base ps4, but i believe it had that issue for other versions as well. Still had fun with it for an MMO. One of the better single player MMOS out there. Looking forward to the next one. Fingers crossed for little pop-in.

It's part of this trailer here with the small print at the bottom.
"Not available on other consoles until at least 24 months after release date"
Same trailer tells us Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo are 12 months console timed exclusive.
@Enigk I’d grab it day one!
@blinx01 Is Forspoken, Project Athia? That's the only game outside of Deathloop that I've seen that says it's timed. Besides we all knew Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo was timed. It's been mentioned a million times. I just wasn't sure about Forspoken.
Lol wait till gta vi trailer drops .
Forspoken, Project Athia? is a PS5 console exclusive
@Rafie
Yes. Project Athia was the project name until they announced it as Forspoken earlier this year.
Obviously 24 months is double the usual length for Sony timed exclusives, so it must have cost them quite a bit to secure.
@blinx01 Okay got it. Thanks for the info. Yeah and 24 months is definitely OD (over doing) it. Sony is spending too money doing these timed deals. Either make it full on exclusive, or don't bother with the timed deals.
That's all well and good but can it sustain interest? Ghosts of Tsushima and Horizon looked fantastic but after playing them after playing every other big open world game, they still suffered from laborious fetch quests and kill x amounts of this, and were a chore for me to complete.
Hopefully AMD's tech can gain some ground on DLSS. I mean DLSS was not good when it launched but today it is leaps and bounds above AMDs solution. Given both main consoles run AMD it really matters that AMD up there game.
As far as open worlds go.. Ubisoft has soured me. I used to love AC games but I have not been able to deal with the long slog of the last few. I did not even try the last one though so my view is somewhat dated.
This sounds great but I’m increasingly wary of buying on day 1. Far too many games promising something that ultimately isn’t delivered.
I could name some games here but we all know which ones I’m talking about …..
Best looking game meaning no game lol🤣👌
But what will the gameplay be like? The parkour movement looks dope what but else will the game offer? Im pretty upset that game devs are still in the graphics obsession phase. Hopefully the game actually contains some cool stuff in it.
sounds like s-e has given up on making good games and will continue to neglect gameplay.
They need to change the name, forspoken sounds so generic and forgettable, how about ATHIA: Forspoken Prophecy
@Steel76 Too bad, linear games are not the answer. I don't think I've played a linear game since 2007.
@Z390 Forspoken probably refers to the girl being some kind of hero of prophecy. It is an Isekai after all lol. But if I remember from the leaks, she’s meant to be queen or something like that.
@Pepsiman_100 But didn’t they specifically make a new engine to have better graphics and action gameplay for this game? Or was that FF16?
@DARKSCORPONOXR
Do you know of any ps4 or ps5 games that come close to doing this. I liked going into the different houses and buildings in Evil Within 2 and still go outside. Anything similiar? Thanks
Can't say I am impressed with the PS4 selection. Doubt I will put more than 5 mins into either. Plague Tale is enough for me for the month and us worth more than the monthly cost of PS+ on its own.
virtua fighter 5 showdown free for the 2nd month running?... sony have lost the plot
