Returnal has been out for just over a week now, and the PlayStation 5 exclusive has been met with a wave of positivity. Just before launch, most reviews painted the intense shooter as a near essential purchase on Sony's new system — but what review score would you give Returnal? That's what we're here to find out.
We gave the title an 'excellent' 9/10 in our full Returnal PS5 review, calling it "a force to be reckoned with". Indeed, there's no denying that the game's an absolute treat on an audio-visual level, but again, we want to know what you think. As always, vote in our polls, and then give us your reasoning in the comments section below.

I've loved it so far. Played for about 15 hours and fortunately haven't run into any technical issues.
There's a bit of a steep learning curve, but once you get into the rhythm the gameplay loop feels very rewarding.
I really don’t know why I bother voting in these things with ‘I haven’t played the game’. It’s like a compulsion. It’s quite literally meaningless to the poll.
Maybe the question should be ... who has actually finished it lol. 20 + hours in and I've reached the second boss, so even though I think it's great from what I've played, I can't give it an overall rating.
It has to be outstanding, I'm still trying to get past the 3rd boss but I can't help jumping back in after each death. I'm not one to throw the towel in when it comes to more challenging games. Being able to save my games and take a break would be nice though.
Well done to everyone who has already beaten the game especially those with a low death count, maybe I'm just getting on a bit now as I would have happily sat through an entire game in one day back when I was a kid but that was because It was that or not see the whole game through 🤣
I'd say an 8, but to me an 8 IS a great score.
It's a game of incredible highs and frustrating lows, but absolutely a fantastic game.
... That I'll probably never get to finish.
@nessisonett what's interesting about that is the same number of people who voted didn't play in the first question also entered that on the 2nd.
Which means there's a good chance a number of people have scored the game, but didn't disclose how long they've played for...
Outstanding for me, couldn't be done on old gen technically either.
First real showing of what PS5 is really capable of.
I might kind of suck at it (stuck on the second boss), but it's a blast to play.
Update: I beat him today! Then I promptly died 😆
I’ve been playing for around 40hrs and love the game and gameplay but the trophies in this game are a joke the survey trophies are ridiculous. I must of played the overgrown ruins 40 times to get the one area with the last cipher I was after, they should of really been 80% for each area to get the trophy seeing as your relying on RNG so much. I think I might have to leave this platinum so I don’t look back on returnal with bad memories
It's a well deserved 9. Visuals, sound and combat are all top notch.
A 9: the game is a technical powerhouse with fantastic visuals and setting. The gameplay is a stellar example of the arcade shooter genre. Quite simply, the finest roguelike/roguelite I’ve had the pleasure of playing, and, yes, that includes Hades. Now, granted, roguelikes are not a genre I’m typically fond of, but Returnal is special. The only thing I’m not sure of yet is the story, which is compelling thus far, but not fully defined for me as I’ve yet to complete the game. My only actual gripes about the game are the non-customizable difficulty and lack of saves, which is an issue for me, as I’m lucky if I can have 2 hours in a night to game. I find that, if I let the game rest, I too rest and am not always sharp enough to resume right back where I was, and this is frustrating. I would also appreciate an easy mode, not because I’d revert to that fully, but because it’d allow me to have the story based experience and then return for the glorious combat. This is a game that I expect to play for years to come. It may not be my favorite game by the end of the year, but I suspect that it’ll be among my top 3 most played by the end of the year regardless of what comes out, and this is a year I played through Valhalla.
Honestly I know people are stressed with the bugs and rightly so but for me bugs have been minimal and I've racked up over 45 hours in 9 days with this game and loved every minute of it
Dunno what it is for me but it's very addicting love try different perks and gun playthroughs, the game play is fast frantic and challenging and the story is very open and the I love hearing people's interpretations of it... 9 / 10
Rougelike sucks. Dying and going way way back in the game and losing most of your stuff is stupid. This game won’t get a sequel. It could have been great but it hamstrung itself with frustrating, unfun features largely from a bygone era
Haven't played it..refuse to pay the ridiculous price.
It was on top of my list but it came off my list when I read about it’s lack of saving and single checkpoint. Time constraints.
So I changed gears and got R-Type Final 2 instead.
@Futureshark From what I heard, Returnal’s actually pushing the PS5 pretty hard too.
Granted, it probably takes years to learn the optimization tricks for a new console and see what it can really do. But it’s cool there’s finally a game out there that’s pushing it.
I gave it an 8. Would have given it a 9 but the update issues its had plus, the big thing, is lack of saving. It shouldn’t have a save you can load from upon death. But it absolutely should have an auto save or something for when you want to shut the PS5 down, play a different game or even if there’s an update that will cause you to lose your run. It wouldn’t make the game any less difficult. But the “put your system it rest mode” is a ridiculous method.
Could be an 8 but i feel like it has balancing issues, haven't tried it with the latest patch but atm I'd give it a 7.
I understand frustrations of lack of saves if you don't have a lot of time or not particularly good at the game but honestly find it fine you don't have to do the bosses once you beat them so you load out can be built from biome 1 and even pretty much skip 2 entirely and go to 3 if you beat 2nd boss.. Also once you on biome 4 if you die you go straight back to 4 honestly find biomes 5 and 6 alot easier
Its a fun game; but its too Rogue-like and not enough Rogue-lite. There are not enough permanent unlocks to make the time spent in a failed run feel like you accomplished something. To me that drops it down from a possible 8-9 to a 6.
@djdizzy also got to remember housemarque are new to aaa games and learning optimisation may have been difficult compared to say a naughty dog or guerrilla games who could probs make the same game pushing the console nowhere near too its max.
@GZoo damn 20 hours and only the 2nd boss lol. Hope you're enjoying it though
@PCPS4XB I would guess it took me about 10-15 hours to finish the first biome and beat the first boss. The first biome is pretty easy; but boss fights are just so drawn out (they are damage sponges!) that it only takes a couple mistakes to end your run.
Really enjoying the game. It’s unfortunate the narrative around it seems to revolve around technical issues and difficulty. Sony should double down on QA before their major releases, to avoid the narrative being taken hostage like here and days gone.
Haven’t played it, since I don’t have a PS5 just yet.
An easy 9 despite its high difficulty and Price tag.
A 9 for me! Very addictive gunplay but very hard.. I've died 14 times so far and got to the 3rd boss, not too bad! Definitely needs commitment though with running through everything prior.
@The_New_Butler Well to me, Demon's Souls is a must-play even if you played the original. The updated graphics, controller effects, are simply worth the price of PS5 along with Astrobot to me. But sure, this is the first officially exclusive game that's a must-play. It's fair, it's challenging, its fast, its skill-based. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is simply some of the design choices could have been better handled. But gameplay wise, it's a 10. Sound wise it's a 10. Art direction is a 10. Just so nagging tech issues kept it from being perfect, something that a sequel could easily rectify. It's the first time since Botw and GoW that I've been stuck to my TV and controller and just had to beat the game. I was like 16 again on summer vacation lol. Great game! I still have to beat it once more to get the true ending and of course clear these trophies out.
This is hard. Returnal feels like it could be such a great game. However the lack of save features and difficulty level is a little mind numbing. I love the sound design some of the best overall sound design I’ve ever heard in my life. But, I cannot really recommend this game unless you like torture porn or something along those lines!
The lack of the ability to save your progress and return really hampers the overall experience l. Given, the game’s difficulty. The game is hard and I’ve only played 10-15 hours made it to the 2nd biome. No ability to save your features seems like an insult!
I think no one can deny it’s a great game, it’s just now whether or not you can actually stay alive to experience the greatness or just keep repeating the first 2 biomes
10. This game wasn't even on my radar: I'm not a big third person shooter gamer, not huge on sci-fi, and the early gameplay looked repetitive. But this has been [the most fun] I've had playing any videogame in I don't know how long. I haven't even completed this game yet, I am taking my time, enjoying it. The story is intriguing, the atmosphere really makes me feel like I am all alone by myself on an alien planet, exploring the former and current society, and fighting to stay alive. The gameplay just has me hooked, I cannot put it down — even after a lengthy run ends in a frustrating death, I end up taking off running for the first gate door out of the Helios to at least start yet another run. (Regardless of if it is 2AM on a work night!) I played a tiny bit of Resogun, but I'm not really familiar with this developer, but Housemarque really hit the mark with this one, for me. This game is an example of WHY I play videogames.
9/10.
I'm amazed by how good this game is. I've been playing since launch and I only just beat the first boss this morning, then continued on straight to the second boss. Almost killed it, but I dodged off of an edge and lost half of the health I had left.
When it killed me my hands were shaking. Such a roller-coaster.
Having said all of that, I think I've quit the game and swore I'd never play it again 4 or 5 times 😂
@PCPS4XB I do enjoy the fast and slick nature of it, and the shoot em up combat is really good. Returnal has made me think why I haven't got on with SoulsBourne games, and those games just aren't as 'fun' to play for me, hence why I haven't made progress with them ... not because they are too difficult.
I am not playing Returnal until it is at 60$. I'll be playing RE8.
A well deserved 9. Awesome game, really enjoying it.
I absolutely adore this game. It has become my go to when I have free time to play. If you want to live, Finding Nemo has the best advice...just keep [moving]. And dash is your friend.
It’s not happening on this site but it’s nice to see many admitting that this is a good game but not a good rogue game. The variety isn’t there and there are many mechanics in place to try to make the game longer to justify its price. It’s a 6-7 for me. 12 hours in, 5th biome so far but some of those hours were watching other people play it as well.
I gave it a 9 played about 18hrs so far but this weekend is the first proper session I have had, played good few hours yesterday and been hooked all day today, did the first boss in 2 attempts, 2nd first time haven't got to the third one yet hopefully by the end of tonight lol. I bought resi on Friday thinking I would go between the two but haven't touched it since first night lol, this game has hooked me big time. Think I have died about 32 times so far lol. Also love the daily challenges although today's didn't do well as it was with the shotgun and I like the two assault rifles, hopefully tomorrow will be better lol
70 bucks for 5 hours of gameplay that has been extended out to 20 to 25 due to unnecessary difficulty.
Hey, if you can get away with it, why not?
This is a little tongue in cheek, but also a little bit how I feel about this game and Deathloop.
@thedevilsjester Add to that, the artifacts and parasites don’t change up a run that much at all. There isn’t much map variety either. I’d be more forgiving if this was a 40-50 dollar game.
Returnal is reminding me so much of playing Bloodborne for the first time. With both games I knew they’d be hard and frustrating going in but it’s the setting & atmosphere that appealed to me. I still remember slowly figuring out how Bloodborne worked (learning how to throw pebbles to thin the herd, mastering the visceral attack) and sticking with it death after death after death because it was so beautifully gothic and dark. I could lead anyone through Central Yarnham blindfolded even now. Exactly the same thing is happening with Returnal & I love it. Only just figured out today that it’s much easier to melee the annoying flying bat things than try to shoot them. A little further every run. 👍
That's the thing about reviews: they aren't popularity contest. Your score may not be widely accepted, but it must be right.
So far, I'm on board with the scores Push Square is assigning. Thank you!
played and completed in 13 hours with 20 loops. i have loved the game, the story and the gameplay are great. though the game was no where near as hard as id thought it be. Doom eternal is harder in my opinion, but yeah i ultimately agree with Pushsquares 9/10
Finished it today.
I gave it a 9.
A must have for a Rouge fans and a top notch Playstation 5 game.
My GotY so far but might not say much as I haven't played many new games this year besides Disco Elysium and a bit of Oddworld Soulstorm
I've played just over 15 I think and really loving it for the most part. I've had 2 crashes which is frustrating but not seen any other notable glitches or bugs in the game.
Finding it difficult but fun and have yet to beat the 2nd boss (although got pretty close the last couple of attempts), I'm confident I'll do it in the next 2 or 3 tries.
I'd probably say it's between an 8 and a 9 for me at the moment.
I am loving it so much. I gave it a 9 and I am 30 hours in and still getting absolutely dominated on the 3rd biome boss and yet still find myself going back for more! If anyone has any tips for taking him down I am all ears because at this point Nemesis is truly my nemesis.
Whilst I can appreciate people’s wish for a save the lack of one has thankfully not hampered my experience at all. I am able to get to the third boss from biome 1 in well under 2 hours and I believe after Act 1 there is a checkpoint. Save and quit should definitely be an option though.
This is honestly one of the hardest games I’ve ever played 🥺
@PossibLeigh Is it that tough u really need a PS5.😢
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk remember when Push Square reported it was going to be an easy platinum? Lol.
I'd say a 6. I think the seriously strong highs it has are hindered by some bafflingly bad design decisions. I hope Housemarque never makes another roguelite again.
I don't understand the save system (I don't have the game).
People are moaning you can't save, and are also moaning they lost/corrupted their save. What is it?
Glad to hear most people love it. It looks great from what I’ve seen and it’s definitely on my wishlist for whenever I get a PS5.
@MatthewJP only certain items are permanent — certain suit upgrades, weapon abilities, and one of the two currencies. To not give away too much, I feel the game was brutally difficult and became much easier by the end of the first biome when I got the melee weapon. I now start each run with the melee weapon, which drastically simplifies playing biome 1. If the save got corrupt, you’d have to start all over without that permanent upgrades. That would be enough for me to throw my dual sense against the wall.
I just love this game. Even though it keeps kicking my arse and some runs seem so much harder than others I keep coming back for more. The combat is exhilarating, the world design and atmosphere is some of the best I've seen. The sound is amazing and it uses the dualsense brilliantly. I might never finish it but I gave it a 10 and think it was worth every penny. Oh and I must be lucky, because in over 20 hours I've not had one bug.
It has a lot of great things that I don't see people talk about. For example, I think it's brilliant that you know before going through a door if it's the main path or a side path. It takes away a lot of the tedium of map navigation that is in similar styles of games.
A 11.but seriously.i give it a 9 out of 10.word up son
@RBMango Hi there. Can you expand. For those who haven't bought it yet and aren't prepared to gamble £70 it would be good to have your thoughts on what design choices.
@lindos Sure, but I can only speak from my personal perspective as someone who doesn't normally enjoy roguelikes. To make a long story short: the runs are way too long for my taste, grinding for health upgrades has now been made much more tedious thanks to this new update's "fix" for the ship healing, the randomized nature of everything felt more frustrating than fair, and the lack of any mid-run saves signaled to me that Housemarque didn't respect my time outside of committing to their long game. There's a really good core to Returnal and its aesthetic is quite nice, but I think it's stuck in this misguided, deeply flawed roguelite structure. I personally think a roguelite like Hades outclasses nearly every aspect of Returnal, and that only costs $25.
@djdizzy Lots of bandwidth is required for lots of alpha effects. And returnal does not skimp on alpha effects. I’ve heard unreal engine though isn’t the best solution because it’s slower than normal.
At any rate, when it’s compared to what miles morales is doing at 60fps(very high geometry, amazing textures, full city simulation/streaming, ray traced reflections on any reflective surface and machine learning suit/body interaction physics) then it does pail a bit. It’s still a top notch looker, but actual first party games will always be better.
8.5 it’s that good. Only thing is each run that’s unsuccessful is draining. Can only play like one or two runs per day if that
Thought it was garbage, 9/10.
Hi there fellow gamers.
For me, personaly, it´s an outstanding 10/10 game.
I have already reached the Sixth Biome and it´s weird and interesting at the same time.
I´m really digging the story they are trying to tell and I´m slowly puting the pieces of the puzzle together.
Like many have said, the gun play is awesome, the level and environmental design is fantastic, great enemy design, super fun weapons to play and it has that MetroidVania feell to it that I truly enjoy.
Completely worth the full price (even though I didn´t pay full price, but I did bought it day one)
It is, in my oppinion, Housemarque Masterpiece.
If you love these type of games, like challenging but rewarding gameplay mechanics and an interesting mistery to unravel, this is the game for you, has it is for me.
Cheers, stay safe folks and happy gaming to us all
@AgentGuapo still don't get it (other than your explanation, thanks). So each time you switch the ps5 on if you haven't left it in rest mode, you are at the very start of the game?
@OmegaStriver Some more wildly varied guns wouldn't go amiss true, but I think it's structurally a sound roguelite.
Im working on getting the platinum just because in not ready to be done yet. I've put a little over 40 hours into it. Just have to grind out the survey trophies to get the platinum now.
The people giving it anything lower than a 7 suck at the game and should get good.
@velio84 I tried Nioh 2. I agree, the combat is great, but the environments are very drab and the loot game is just ridiculous! Was the first better in that regard?
@djdizzy I've just bought that. It's looking great, but it's a shame that the ship ulocks are purchases, rather than in game time unlocks.
Absolutely fantastic! One of the best games i have ever played. It's not trying to be more than a videogame and perfects being a videogame. GOTY handsdown.
@MatthewJP Location-wise, yes, you always start at the same place. You also lose all your items, health upgrades etc. However, some things are permanent. For example, if you reached the boss in the current level once, his door will forever be unlocked so next time you can get to it much quicker (getting there for the first time requires going deeper into the area to find a key). Going straight to the boss will potentially mean getting fewer upgrades on the way but also less risk of losing health before you get there. It’s up to you to decide which route to take. Once you beat the boss and unlock the next level, the gateway stays open and you will be able to go that level without fighting the first boss.
Also, once you beat Act 1 (after 3rd boss), you’ll start at the beginning of act 2.
There are also some other things that are unlocked permanently (like weapon traits) that could make subsequent runs easier.
Hope this helps. I found it to be an excellent game structure myself and I don’t have any real experience with rougelike/lite games.
Am I the only one that wished games gave more freedom to play the game the way you want to play it and not how the developer wants you to play it? Hear me out. I was a pretty big fan of Resident Evil before 7 went first person. Hated that game and now have no desire to play 8. Returnal looks amazing but I absolutely hate rogue like games. I have tried many and found none that I enjoyed so I’m not throwing down $70 on a game I know I wont enjoy. I was going to (just because I’m a glutton for punishment) until the save thing came out. If 8 had a 3rd person option and Returnal allowed saves, I would have bought 2 more games in the last 2 weeks. I can’t be the only one that feels this way.
BTW, even I know, having not played Returnal, that the person voting Returnal as Abysmal is an idiot. Maybe it’s not ur cup of tea, but abysmal would mean that the game is broken or so poorly done that it’s a waste of breathe to talk about it. So xboner, go back to Pure Xbox and try again.
@PossibLeigh I fully agree with you. It’s a lazy way to go about it IMO. It takes away the feeling of accomplishment like imagine unlocking Delta’s R-13 as an achievement.
Completed the secret ending tonight, took me around 30hrs to do.
Housemarque have proved that their style of gameplay can fit a AAA format, I just hope Sony were impressed enough to stick with them for the long term.
I gave it an 8 overall, for me it's Alien meets Metroid with Remedy's story telling. The down points were reused biomes with a different look for the later ones apart from the last one. Collectibles being left to RNG for the platinum I don't like, think it's unnecessary.
My best advice for those struggling is take your time in each biome, you'll be tempted to get back from where you died but trust me, take the time to build up your health, weapon proficiency and stick to a type of weapon your comfortable with as long as it does good damage. And lastly don't be afraid to get a couple of malfunctions, the requirements are never usually that difficult.
I’m almost done with Nier Replicant, after I get endings C, D and E I’ll be moving onto Returnal.
10/10. The Metroid game I always wanted. Might be a top 10 game ever for me and I’ve been gaming since NES
question... if i beat the boss in the first biome and move onto the second and die do I have to beat the first boss all over again?
@rumple1980 No, once you've beaten a boss every encounter after that is optional.
As for the poll, game was a 9/10 for me. Currently trying to unlock tier 3 traits for all weapons.
1/10 since it's a roguelike. 9/10 if it was a metroidvania
9/10 only because my very first run crashed and I was starting off strong. This is after the latest patch. Also, the first biome is a bit too dark in my opinion.
Other than that, I’m hooked. This is the tightest feeling action game I’ve played in a long time. Each room with enemies feels like its own little arena that you maneuver with deadly precision. The way the story is done with audio logs, decipher glyphs, and the first-person house segments are quite well done, and I want to find out what’s really going on with Selene.
Incredible game. Like a 3D alien version of The Binding of Isaac. The sense of speed in the game is exhilarating.
Gave it an 8.
Its a bit rough, some things are explained poorly but overall I a enjoying myself.
Died at first boss a gazillion times, but then something clicked.
The second boss went down in 'only' 8 tries.
The 3rd in one try somehow and the 4th in two tries.
The more u play the easier it gets imo.
I do not own a PS5 yet, but once I have it I will buy the game definitely. I like that is something different and for me this is cool. I cannot wait to play this game.
I will buy this game as soon as I can get a PS5
This game is an EASY 9/10 for me after 20 hours or so, almost towards the end of the game. I'd go as far as to say it's the current GOTY, as well as what feels like the first "next-gen" feeling experience.
I could see this game becoming one of the PS5 classics years down the road. It's such high quality. For those who are unsure of it or don't feel it's worth the price... That all changes once you have it in your hands. It is surreal haha
@DeepSpace5D I totally feel that. I didn't feel it was unbearably dark until I saw biome 5, especially compared to 1 it makes the first area look like a light show lol
8/10. Fantastic experience but lacks some basic functionality like saving when quitting, an option to change your difficulty, or even to respawn at the beginning of the biome you entered last with the equipment you had at that point. No everyone has time to pour in so many hours at once for a single run. My play sessions are mostly 1 hour, maybe 2, but never more. I really need some options to be able to really enjoy this game.
Can't believe I missed this yesterday but I was too busy with the family, making up for all those hours that I've spent playing this damn game.
Seriously though I have it at outstanding. It's easily the best thing I've played in ages and that's not because I've been playing terrible games - it's just that good. I never thought I'd enjoy replaying the same bits over and over again but I really enjoy the build up to the boss fights. Trying to build the right perks and items up and not lose them from having a gamble too far.
I can totally get the rouge like thing and the difficulty level as the game makes you work for every victory, and every victory tastes that much sweeter because of it. As other have mentioned you come out of the boss fights shaking from all the effort but filled with elation from having done it. And if you don't do it, hell you go back for more.
Really wish I could give this game a high score. Had to score it a 4 bc I’ve had to stop playing due to the game now hard crashing my console since the recent patches. Very disappointing. Last one was right in the middle of the second boss. The game itself is excellent, but it’s 100% broken and unplayable on my console. Anyone else having these hard crashes? Am I the only one??? Any ideas? 😢 Hoping another patch will sort this out...
In the mean time, playing (and loving) RE8... but thinking about Returnal...
I'm in the 3rd area, 2 bosses down. The atmosphere, particle effects, audio design, controller experience and gameplay are a 10. 9 score overall for me just for some other minor pickiness. If you compare narrative to other world class examples, perhaps not as fully fleshed out, as an example of pickiness.
I finished Act 2 after 20 hours with 27 deaths total which were all from the first Act. I struggled with the second boss and just going through the third Biome but somehow managed to do Biomes 4, 5 & 6 without a single death. The Electropylon Driver is an absolute beast.
I completely understand the game is not for everyone but I can safely say this is gonna be my GotY, I just can't see anything else coming close. I haven't felt this strongly about a game since Bloodborne.
Played about 12 hours so far and had multiple hard crashes. Most recent one lost just over 2 hours progress, so I've moved onto RE Village until the game is patched to an acceptable state.
At the moment, it's a 7/10 for me, just because the game was released in an unacceptable state in my eyes.
This game Returnal is rated Awful by me. Glad I rented it instead of buying it. I do not like how you die over and over and over and need to collect start from the very beginning. I personally don't have time for a game like that (With work, etc) I wish they had made it so collectibles could just be saved. I played for two hours and then quit. To me personally it is not fun. I am having a blast with Resident Evil Village I bought though.
I'd give it a solid 8. It'd be a 9 if I didn't get so many crashes and other game breaking technical issues. And yes, crashes that ruin progress are game breaking; these are showstoppers. No way it should have been shipped in this state.
It really needs a mid-run save save option, but I really like it. I like it enough to say confidently that I'd give it an 8 despite these issues.
That being said, I'm never buying a Housemarque game at launch again, and will not buy any PS5 game I'm unsure about because of this game. Sony assured us the price increase meant an increase in quality. This shows me otherwise.
Solid 8.
Love the gameplay and the world and the atmosphere.
The loop is too unforgiving and unrewarding, though. If the progression were a little more generous and it felt less like the game was wasting my time it'd be near perfect for me.
@ItsATM Oh I see. I haven’t got there yet. Just picked up the game 2 days ago and I just finished Act 1 and beat the third boss, which was one of the most insane boss battles I’ve experienced in a long time.
I had to force myself to put the controller down and get some rest. What a game.
@Propaperpusher yeah it's tough...but once you break-through you realize why they designed it that way. Biome 3 is a doozie, but if you can beat it, the game opens up to you in a large way '-)
@Ward_ting Biome 3 is all-around challenging and I think the most difficult one. The boss you want to have a weapon that obviously is long-range has "homing" or "deals damage over time" is a good one too. Also, stay close, his attacks are limited the closer you are to him. Use dash and grapple liberally as they have invincibility frames, if you aren't sure you can dodge, jump off and grapple sometimes. You got this!
@Constable_What I feel you, I had a crash right before a boss where I was BUFF! I was definitely going to beat him on that run. But two things 1) Covid-19 has affected the development and the ability for these devs to test bugs. I agree a save system is optimal, it would have been abused, but again they could have put the more difficult runs in the trophy systems. 2) The game is designed around you starting runs from scratch. You basically get shortcuts all over the map, can go through each biome liberally once you progress and as you permanently level up your weapons, you are rocking enemies right at the start. I can go from biome 1-5 now in a matter of 2 hours. So I get why they were so hard-pressed to keep the design language in. It absolutely "opens up" once you get competent at the game and now runs feel super enjoyable and I'm not worried about losing progress at all.
@Omnistalgic thanks for your reply! I finally beat biome 3 last night after 7 hours! Had an astronaut which I never even needed to use and had more than half my health left so was pretty thrilled! Excited to explore some new biomes now.
The fact I could play for 7 hours on and off yesterday, whilst constantly dying is a testament to how great this game is!
This game is so godamned good! I'm addicted to this game. Housemarque has created an instant classic here. They could not be a more perfect fit for worldwide studios. Bluepoint and them are no-brainers in my opinion. Yes the game is difficult. But the gameplay is so good you'll just want to keep improving. It leads you to mastery. Games hold your hand so much now it's refreshing. I grew up on the 8-bit and 16-bit games and many of those games were savage. But when you succeed it is glorious. Easy 10/10!
I'd give it a 7, although that would be higher if it were priced better.
I'm technically a fan of every part of this game, from the SHMUP style action, to the roguelite design, to even the tropes use (I favor sci-fi, and even convoluted time tropes), and even the aesthetics like Edge of Tomorrow, Prometheus, Annihilation, etc....
but AS a fan of all of those parts, the game isn't really excelling at any one of them, for me. Actually, some aspects are detrimental to other aspects, for me.
It's flashy, but I get over flash quickly. It's challenging, but I don't feel like it's rewarding enough to warrant any determination. Like it's overwhelmingly just made for the sort of person that wants tedium for the sake of overcoming tedium, but I need an actual sense of progress.
I came up with a theory for the story that I like enough, but don't think stretching out 1.5hrs of meta narrative 20 times over makes for a good value.
When it's eventually $20 or whatever, and there are lots of games available for PS5, I don't think people will be insisting it's worth 3.5x that price... or talking about it much at all.
Speaking of, I feel like it's generally being inflated +1 for it's function as a "tech demo" for the new platform. I like haptics and spatial audio, but not enough to change the score of a game. I think such things should be standard anyway.
@DeepSpace5D Isn't this game incredible! you're in for a treat with the 2nd half of the game now that you have passed the 3rd boss. The one after that might be your favorite, but they're all so unique so it's hard to tell. What an insanely good game
@ItsATM I just beat the 6’th biome! I was in awe the whole time underwater. Playing with headphones and the dualsense, this game is truly something special. That final boss, all I can say is wow.
It truly felt like exploring some ancient alien world. Now I have to replay and find the sunface fragments in each biome. It’s going to be really hard to top this as my game of the year.
@DeepSpace5D Same here my friend! I actually finished it last night and got the credits. Definitely plan on keep playing to get the rest of the lore and collectables haha
GOTY material for sure. I'm so happy with how high quality it is. I think the final boss was really beautiful but it also was the easiest of the bosses for me. Ixion in the 2nd biome was surely the most challenging for me
@ItsATM I’d have to agree Ixion is the most challenging overall. Ophion isn’t too bad, but sure is astonishing to look at.
Believe it or not I haven’t died yet during a boss fight, I guess because I wont even attempt one unless my integrity is high and I have a strong weapon. I have though died numerous times throughout the biomes leading up to one. The gold doors in particular can be real tough if you’re not prepared before entering.
Cheers man, been fun discussing the game with you.
@DeepSpace5D I will warn you, if you haven’t gotten to the last biome yet, there is an enemy mostly behind the yellow doors that hits you with a random malfunction if you take damage from him lol. I had the most perfect run going and got too greedy going in there, he hit me a couple times, destroyed my Astronaut due to critical malfunction, then killed me.
I was livid lol. Ended up completing the game on the next run! Gotta go for completion and true ending now.
Has been fun indeed my friend! Looking forward to more discussions
