Although you have to watch out for stuff that can get lost in translation.
But generally, it seems the PS5 SSD is very impressive. Loading practically instantly once you day. So much that the game developers have to build in enough transitioning and/or a button. Otherwise it could get very confusing for the player.
I found the above videos fun. I live in Japan so I fully expected it to be just like it happened. I am actually surprised we got some additional details beside the games.
On one hand I am all about privacy, but on the other hand, some parts of the internet should have some kind of way to be treated the same way as a "public space". Like when somebody IRL walks up to you and says something like that, then he is not as anonymous as he would be on the internet.
Maybe some kind of setting in terms of private messaging (e.g. on twitter) where you can set that only people who are verified and non-anonymous can message you directly. That could deter a lot of people already from writing stuff like that.
I’m hoping for xCloud news from the Microsoft Japan showing.
Got an android device lying around I could use to play some Xbox on the side.
And since FFXVI, I’m wondering what else SqaureEnix has to show.
Don’t forget, Xbox preorders in Japan are happening the day AFTER the TGS show. This could mean Microsoft might be showing something to do a last push for Xbox orders.
If the rumors are true about Sony initially wanting $600, I can imagine that they shifted the difference to the first party games. So I wonder if the choice was $600 console and $60 price vs $500 console and $70 games.
@Pleasance There seem to be more people of the Yoshida's team working on it I heard.
It depends how much influence he has. A producer can have quite a lot of influence in a game. And you can pretty much already see a lot of his influence. Which is in no way a bad thing.
Update: Just got it, it seems the Heavensward team of FFXIV is working on FFXVI (Division 3). This is amazing news tbh. Heavensward is one of the best DLCs any MMORPG had to offer IMO.
And they seem to have gotten the DMC combat director for the game as well.
The director is the assistant director of ARR and Stormblood.
@rachetmarvel If FFXIV is anything to go by, you will see great characters and great character development as well as crazy plot twists in FFXVI.
I hope for the best.
“We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.”
I don't think this changed. As stated, the exclusives that also come to PS4 are apparently taking also full advantage of the PS5 features. So if this holds true, then they didn't lie about anything.
My high end rig (with a 2080ti) could barely handle 4k60fps in AC Odyssey unless i turn down the settings.
That begs the question on which settings AC Valhalla will run to hit those 4K60fps. Medium?
Everybody always talks about hitting 4k60fps, but nobody is wondering how the fidelity between 4k30fps and 4k60fps compares.
I personally would prefer a good upscaled 4k60fps with higher fidelity (=high/ultra settings) over native 4k60fps on low/medium.
This game has become so stagnant. Since it is releasing on GamePass, I will have a look at it. I stopped playing 3-4 months ago. And with games releasing left and right around it, there will be better investments of my time than Destiny I think. Especially with Cyberpunk 2077 launching in the same month.
They already said it might be delayed to 2021. I just hope they do delay it. It looks pretty good, but just needs more of that fine tuning on animations and other parts.
I wish I could be more excited, but with the Mafia games always seem to end up being some buggy mess. So I will wait for reviews. I haven’t bought Mafia 2 remaster and also not Mafia 3 because of that.
I play mainly for story, so I don’t care as much for end game and loot progression. In that regard i loved the beta. I’m still hoping for a good day one patch with further optimizations to performance. And I’m very much looking forward to playing it on 4k60fps on PS5 as well later on.
@80sGamer It’s actually how the original idea of anthem was. Just heavier on survival mechanics. But EA didn’t like it and liked some part where you were kind of flying and then decided to go all out on flying. We can now basically see what anthem would have been if EA didn’t interfere.
That makes it more interesting now, because we saw some gameplay bits of Kena. So now I hope we see gameplay to a game that has not shown any gameplay so far. Maybe Stray? Or was there another PS4 game besides Kena?
So if the main missions are really that good, its already worth my money.
I mainly buy the game for the story missions.
And then I guess I hope they improve side missions. Or maybe side missions will get better down the line due to rise in difficulty and complexity? Guess nobody will know until the game releases and we see the "end game".
Anyway, jumping into the beta tomorrow. Let's see if I will keep my preorder.
@djlard
Yeah, it would be great if Sony could be a bit more consumer-friendly. But then on the other hand, how many split screen/couch co-op games are there really on PS?
Just googling quickly about couch co-op games, it doesn’t seem like there are many at all.
Still, Sony could have gone down the road saying “if a developer wants to support it, he can, but there won’t be general support”. And the DS4 support function just being a flag that is set in the game’s compiled settings table.
So that the consumer can scream at the dev to support it instead of Sony.
It’s all about setting customer expectations right. Just like with M&KB support. Sony themselves should force innovation. But they could sometimes also just give an option to devs.
FallGuys is getting a Gordon Freeman Headcrab costume as preorder bonus on Steam, yet nobody cries anti-consumer about free platform exclusive content there.
If stuff like that has to be held to a certain principle, all have to follow.
Popularity of a character or franchise shouldn't matter.
But people like to to scream anti-consumer only when it fits them.
I for one couldn't care less. If Microsoft wants something exclusive in Avengers on their end, they should just spend the money.
I am happy I get spider-man for myself on PS4.
@djlard I will post what I did on PureXbox regarding this:
I can understand why PS4 controllers won't work with PS5 games. Its sometimes not that simple. See Ratchet and Clank:
"“It also lets you know how the weapon is behaving,” Smith said. “One of the examples is the Enforcer, it’s a double-barrelled shotgun. It uses the adaptive triggers to give you tension as you’re moving your finger down halfway, you can fire one barrel.
This would simply not work on a PS4 controller. You basically can't play Ratchet and Clank on a PS4 controller. So Sony could have gone down the road saying "as a dev you can support PS4 controllers if you want", but then some games having support and others not will lead to customer confusion and probably to a lot of unnecessary complains. So maybe Sony just thought F it and took the easy road.
Take it how you will. But Sony is trying to innovate and sometimes it simply means leaving things behind. Just like Nintendo does. Sony is not consumer-friendly, they are dev-friendly. They listen to what devs want to be able to realize their visions and they build it. Most of their events are around developers being able to build their visions on PS. Xbox is consumer-first. Most of their events are around value for the consumer. That's the difference between the two.
I am happy that with PS5 a dev can choose to purely support PS5 and all new features without having to worry about compatibility with devices that don't fit his vision.
So I guess this will be just like the Xbox event, where most games will run cross gen. And would come with some PS5 resolution and frame rate bump.
Still exciting if you ask me, because this time we got the backwards compatibility. PS4 games don’t look bad.
And we all know how good “third party exclusives” can look as well.
I believe we might see another update to Kena, which is a cross gen title. I would love to see more about that one.
Haven’t played for quite a while. I played a bit of the add on. I’m thinking of holding out until PS5, so I can play it with a better resolution plus frame rates.
Yes please!
I play purely 4K only. Anything checkerboard or DLSS is better than simply running sub-4K on a 4K TV.
And pretty often I can’t quite hit the 60fps and have to go down to locking the frames to 30fps to have at least some kind of smooth experience without sporadic lags.
With DLSS you even get a better picture with sometimes double the frame rates (e.g. Deliver Us The Moon).
@__jamiie the graphics indeed look like current gen, just more detailed and a higher resolution. But the gameplay so far showed no pop-ins in the distance, ray tracing and the dimensional jumps showing instant loading of assets. 3 things I expect next gen to deliver.
Halo already has pop-ins seen in the demo and the graphics also looked quite current gen. I will still get Halo since I enjoy the series. But on PC.
I own and play on pretty much any device, and wouldn’t say I am biased towards PlayStation. I still think Sony had the better showcase though. Maybe with The Medium we might see some more next-gen moments soon.
I just finished watching.
While I’m definitely looking forward to play all those games on PC, I feel like Microsoft is using their 12TF to only double or triple the frame rates of the Xbox One X. But kept the graphics almost the same as what is possible on Xbox One X or PS4 Pro. Just running on 4k60fps or 4k120fps.
It wasn’t bad, but the next-gen feeling is not there. With Ratchet and Clank PS5 had the true next gen moment (ray tracing, example of super fast SSD in action).
@Wavey84 30fps on PS4 first party games is super smooth (have you played Ghost of Tsushima?). No stutter at all.
Yeah it could be even smoother, but maybe you are mistaking crappy framepacing on PC with great framepacing on console. For instance 30fps on my PC on FarCry 5 just look incredibly ugly, even with me trying to fix the framepacing.
Anyway, I have a 2080ti, and stable 4k60fps is not even possible in many new games unless I reduce graphical fidelity.
Or if the game just had DLSS 2.0.
And with ray tracing it’s practically impossible.
Expecting a $500 console to deliver what a $1000 gpu only can’t.
It basically means you are asking for crappier graphics just to get your 60fps and remove all ray tracing.
Well, you are getting your option. But I want my 30fps high fidelity ray traced option.
It’s just a short domestic flight for me. But with this stupid pandemic still going in, I won’t be going anywhere. But I will bookmark the page for once I go, I know which places to visit on the island.
Crazy that this page is not available in Japan.
I hope the japanese Sony store has that very same condition.
I guess I will simply try to order at amazon and the Sony Store, see what gets through with a reasonable delivery date.
I just wish Sony would set this condition on Amazon as well. The Pokemon games always get that here in Amazon Japan.
Nintendo does that sometimes. But just not for consoles for whatever moronic reason.
Well, it did "meet" my expectations. Not above, not below. Just exactly point on. Therefore I am neither disappointed, nor amazed. But I might end up buying all 3 games. This Far Cry might be the first FarCry for me to play since FarCry 2.
I could never get into WatchDogs 1.
WatchDogs 2 was just a lot more fun. Maybe because I am a software engineer, I could relate much better to WatchDogs 2.
It reminded me a bit of my college time.
@snowstorm2574 I could only find info about Ray Tracing on Xbox Series X. Where did you get that info about PS5 with no load times?

I’ll be looking forward to more story content.

@djlard
I will post what I did on PureXbox regarding this:
I can understand why PS4 controllers won't work with PS5 games. Its sometimes not that simple.
See Ratchet and Clank:
"“It also lets you know how the weapon is behaving,” Smith said. “One of the examples is the Enforcer, it’s a double-barrelled shotgun. It uses the adaptive triggers to give you tension as you’re moving your finger down halfway, you can fire one barrel.
“You pull it all the way down, you can fire both barrels. But all along the way, you can feel the difference between the tension tightening up.”"
https://www.kotaku.com.au/2020/06/ratchet-clank-rift-apart-ps5-dualsense-features/

That's the difference between the two.
I am happy that with PS5 a dev can choose to purely support PS5 and all new features without having to worry about compatibility with devices that don't fit his vision.

I believe we might see another update to Kena, which is a cross gen title. I would love to see more about that one.
