Square Enix blew the doors off Sony's PS5 showcase, coming in hot with Final Fantasy XVI. Unlike what we've come to expect of the Japanese publisher over the years, the title actually got a gameplay trailer, suggesting that the project is at least some ways into active development.
However, it sounds like Final Fantasy XVI is still a while off. Over on the PlayStation Blog, Square Enix confirms that the game's next info dump is planned for 2021. Whether that's early, mid, or late 2021, we sadly don't know.
What did you think of Final Fantasy XVI's reveal? Swear vengeance in the comments section below.

That information being that we're not going to be seeing this game until 2025 at the earliest.
After XV I should be incredibly pessimistic but by Bahamut it just looks incredible going back to traditional medieval fantasy is a great sign, story looks dark and engaging, epic orchestral music, the combat looks like what XV should've been and the FF XIV team is doing it i'm extremely hopeful ^__^
Yeah, this game is not releasing for the next two years, typical square enix.
Let's hope this time we get the game we saw in the trailers, and not a rework like 15.
Looks great. Already have a list of New games of my favorite series on PS5, and not sold 1 console yet.
They Bet on the hardware from day Zero. This is how actual 3rd party support looks like.
@rachetmarvel We FFXIV players trust in Yoshida. He doesn’t screw people over.
@tatsumi If he is able to tell a coherent story with lovable characters, create a deep version of ff7 remakes battle system, and able to produce a good ost and a likeable game play loop for a jrpg, then I to will join his fan club, but right now ,I will just monitor the progress of this game.
@tatsumi He's only producing.
They have time to give the main character a proper look, he seemed like he was straight out of an online game character generator but I could be mistaken ‘cause I’ve already forgotten him...
The game IMMEDIATELY felt, looked and sounded like a FF title, which was cool and great. I knew from the start thats what we were looking at. They have their style, which has evolved gradually since the days of the PS1 for what characters look like and how they move.
However, what stuck out like a sore thumb was that the scenes seemed to feature a single character fighting, and not a party. That could of course just mean that its from very early in the game or was created for demo purposes, but I found it odd, and a bit worrisome. As a FF lifer, I'm still super eager for AAA party based RPGS, of which there are so few these days. I love single player action open world titles too, but we've got some of those in the pipeline.
I just hope this doesn't derail the development timeline for Final Fantasy VII Remake 2.
@Feena Everyone in this game so far does look very generic. It's extremely disappointing. Earlier FF games are renowned for their unique, memorable characters.
It didn't really capture me. No characters really stood out. Seems to be missing the charm and originality of older Final Fantasy games
@Pleasance There seem to be more people of the Yoshida's team working on it I heard.
It depends how much influence he has. A producer can have quite a lot of influence in a game. And you can pretty much already see a lot of his influence. Which is in no way a bad thing.
Update: Just got it, it seems the Heavensward team of FFXIV is working on FFXVI (Division 3). This is amazing news tbh. Heavensward is one of the best DLCs any MMORPG had to offer IMO.
And they seem to have gotten the DMC combat director for the game as well.
The director is the assistant director of ARR and Stormblood.
@rachetmarvel If FFXIV is anything to go by, you will see great characters and great character development as well as crazy plot twists in FFXVI.
I hope for the best.
Probably an early 2022 title I suppose. I wouldn't mind that especially with the next 15 months being packed with games
@Ralizah It shouldn't do. It's a totally different development team.
