If Sony wants to sell their console fast, they have to get their backward compatibility right. Without even factoring price differences between the 2 console, tflops numbers don't matter as much if you can run PS4 games upwards of 4K 60fps. I was disappointed that there were no mentioning of how this would be done but the presentation is for PS5 development and BC will be the least of their concern.
That said, I think many fail to see the power of the new SSD which Cerny promised would allow for 1 sec load time. If you compare that to the time Series X took to resume a game (> 6 sec), its game changing.
There will definitely be exclusive but Sony's first party will not be able to churn out that many titles on launch day. One of the option is to make up for this lack of launch titles with free updates to existing PS4 games. I think this is perfectly fine and will give PS4 owners a good reason to buy the new console. The reason why The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima will launch on PS4 even in mid 2020 points to that possibility.
With the success of Switch and the rise of Cloud gaming platforms, it will be harder for Sony to land on third party exclusive. There is a reason for a sudden rush to acquire studio by both Microsoft and Sony. At the end of the day, quality first party studio can still make a huge difference in console's sale figure.
Since both consoles will be launching at the same time and using AMD tech they should be performing at about the same level. Microsoft couldn't possibly have benefit much holding back with the dev kit. A likely reason could be the high speed SSD which Microsoft did not see coming. If Microsoft really wants to surprise Sony, they could just ordered a larger APU, more RAM and subsidies extra cost. But that should not cause a delay in the Dev Kit.
@wiiware I think it is a good idea for both gamers and Sony since they can sell those retro games digitally and profit from it. New generation of gamers can easily access those games without having to find them on the resale market.
With sufficient power, any first person game can be made to run VR. Current generation of consoles are just not up to task but with PS5 and Xbox Scarlett, things could change. Developers will no longer have to circumvent system limitation by designing a brand new genre of VR game. They can now take any AAA titles and have them run on VR.
Developers need to consider the effort taken in bringing 4K, 60fps to the PS5. If the PC version is already doing it on day one, I don't think they should be charging for the patch.
Microsoft may not have to compete directly with Sony on price but rather lower the barrier of entry by offering the same 24 months Game Pass + Xbox Scarlett plan. Since this is a monthly payment, it will give them an edge if both PS5 and Scarlett ends up expensive.
Sony certainly has an edge over Xbox but price will still be key in driving mass adoption. Efficient use of the high speed SSD can lower cost significantly. Sony needs to ensure that Backward Compatibility not only work but also provide meaningful benefits on the new system. Recent first party titles, even exclusives should at least be getting a 60fps and 4K patch.
Microsoft and Google are companies with lots of cash, Sony will have to tread carefully to retain their leader.
If it turns out to be true, I don't Sony is looking to monetize it but rather to bring down the cost of the base PS5 and assuming that the specialized SSD solution may be running on a higher bandwidth.
The key unknown is the SSD and whether it will be the main storage media. Sony will be able to cut some cost with a hybrid SSD + HDD solution. The other option is to offer 2 SKU with different storage capacity. The base PS5 should not cost more than $500.
@wiiware That is the best and a unique advantage Sony has over Microsoft and Google on the next gen. Just imagine not only giving these games a new lease of life but for free. PS5 will be an instant hit.
Could they not create an open world title based on the Uncharted Universe? It would be nice to have something like GTA but with Globetrotting and treasure hunting as theme.
Personally, I don't think most of Sony's first party studio will have any new title on launch day short of Guerilla and the Bluepoint Remake. Gran Turismo history of release delay makes them a bad candidate for launch titles and they probably do not want to suffer the same backlash releasing an 'incomplete' Gran Turismo. The expectation is very high following GT 6 and the next title will need more time.
What Sony can wow the audience will be it's backward compatibility and how games will run better in the new system. It will be very attractive to PS4 owners if they can pay all their games at higher resolution and 60fps.
With so many popular first party titles on PS4, Sony best next gen launch strategy will be to patch these titles with 4K/60-120fps or even better textures. There is little risk and the reward are huge. New titles can still be launch on PS4 capitalizing on the huge user base all the while giving PS5 owners the excuse to upgrade.
Current gen games woefully lacks when it comes to environment simulation. Realistic effects like wind, rain and how they affect the environment as well as the players can add to the atmosphere of games both visually and gameplay. It an area worth improving in the upcoming generation.
Instead of the traditional rumble sensation that can cover everything and anything, I like the haptics controller to be able to mimic just the hands. Specifically, how your hands should be feeling at that moment. For example, if you swing a sword, can you feel the motion of the swing? When you fire a rifle, can you feel the recoil? When you turn a vehicle, can you feel the resistance on the steering wheel? Or maybe when you pick up a book, how should it feel. Such kind of technology can improve immersion especially with VR.
Sony would do better if they focus their attention on adding value to backward compatible PS4 titles. Giving these titles 4K/60fps or even just 60fps will drive early adoption of the PS5 since there are so many PS4 users.
If they were to ever remake Bloodborne, I hope they will make good use of wind, rain and ray traced shadows because this will really turn up the atmosphere to the max.
Some of these games will get their moments of attention once the prices starts coming down. That's the way of life is in video games these days. Too many titles and with all the money going to just the top few.
@BAMozzy If "PS4 Pro Enhanced" is an indication of things to come, then Sony can give gamers a real reason to upgrade even when the catalogue of launch exclusives are weak.
With competition in CPU and GPU heating up, Sony should be able to cut out a good deal with AMD. Ram price has also fallen quite a bit, $500 is possible but depending on how the SSD is being implemented. I suspect that it will be a high speed NAND cache along with the usual HDD. This way, cost can be significantly reduced.
With Gran Turismo Sports, the focus is on eSports and I believe they will make this version a free upgrade with the possibility of including dynamic weather and time along with full VR support. Gran Turismo 7 will be the actual PS5 title.
We do a lot of walking in games anyway and calling this an outright walking simulator is just wrong. Whether Kojima can make the exploration or the "Strand System" interesting as opposed to traditional NPC interactions and random combat remains to be seen.
@PhantomXIII There is really nothing much they could justify a PS5 remaster with graphics already this good. A better strategy would be to use a free patch to entice a switch to the PS5. With game development taking longer, it will take a while before next gen consoles achieve a healthy catalogue of must have titles. Patches gives gamers an early incentive to make the switch and Sony the leading market share.
@Gumbopudding It isn't as straightforward, the reason why PS4 Pro and Xbox One X kept their Jaguar CPU for compatibility. It could be done via emulation, even so, the new console should have no problem achieving 60fps.
@PhantomXIII I believe it is Sony's best interest to release PS5 patch for all their recent AAA first party titles to help push the adoption of the new console. With PS5 expected to cost upwards of $499, it is a huge selling point to be able to play previous gen games a 4K 60fps. After all, with this level of graphics, it would be difficult for them to justify a remaster and another $59.
The technology to power this Pro model may not even be available in 2020. There is only so much they can fit into the APU and judging by the >2 times performance gain on the PS4 Pro, we are looking at a machine upwards of 18 Tflops. No way an APU could have done that in 2020.
Sony's best strategy is to have their line-up of AAA PS4 titles patched with no charge to support 4K, 60fps & Ultra setting while continue releasing future games (at least until 2021) on the PS4. This would create an instant demand for PS5 while new titles will still sell well on the PS4.
If you have not brought the game after all these years, why bother about it getting delisted. This game will still exist on the PS store for owners to download.
Half the blame goes to the gamers who are just too impatient to sit this out with the developers. Many games that didn't quite made the initial quality checks eventually turned out fine.
