The Last of Us: Part II has always looked brilliant in all the trailers, but this is the first time we're getting to see raw gameplay, and it doesn't disappoint. Just from a visual standpoint, Naughty Dog has raised the bar once again with ridiculously detailed environments.
This video from PlayStation Access is informative, but just look at Ellie moving through the world. The animation in particular looks mad. Like the original game was for PS3, The Last of Us: Part II looks to be a graphical high point for PS4, just as everyone begins to turn to next-gen.
What do you think of this fresh The Last of Us: Part II gameplay? Grab some popcorn in the comments below.

I both want to watch and not watch at all. Conflicted.
I just need 60 fps patch for ps5, although there's no way I can wait for playing this game day one on ps4
@Alex_Bevan Naughty dogs is really good on misdirections (like the first game trailer), so it's safe to watch it just for gameplay I think.
it look absolutely amazing to me.. i need play it now lol. can't wait to play it on February 20 at 11pm CST when it unlock
Naughty dog always manages to make current gen games look like next gen games.
The Scotland part in uncharted 4 is key proof of that.
Fanboys claim there is a downgrade LOL.
@PhantomXIII I am sure that's the plan so no need for ports.
Looks a lot more fluid than the original and much more like the Uncharted series, which can only be a good thing as the first could be a little plodding. I do have a concern about the seemingly basic revenge story though but hopefully there is much more to it
I'm curious how the save system will work in a larger open world.
In the first game 1 of the first buildings you are in as Joel you have to kill several infected on several floors. Numerous times I killed them all on the first and or second floors only to tie on the 3rd, then I had to play the ENTIRE BUILDING over again from the beginning. Time after time after time.
The only other time I died repeatedly was inside the restaurant against what I felt was the games only "boss fight". Died way to many times to count fighting that guy. I can't fault the game from always starting that fight from the beginning, it was just 1 fight w/ 1 guy, but it took so long.
I was already waiting on this one, may have to wait until they patch in a "Story mode" if it doesn't have 1 when it releases.
It looks absolutely incredible. A step up in every way from the original. Naughty Dog once again showing that optimization and complete focus for one platform gets you results unachievable for multiplatform releases that have to cater to a variety of different hardware. I don’t really want to see any more of this game but I can’t stop watching!
I love how overgrown the foliage is, taking over houses and reclaiming everything after civilization has mostly died.
@GodGamer There will still be a reason for a port when PS5 comes out, possibly for higher resolution and framerate on the PS5, but it’s mainly for those who did not purchase a PS4 but bought a PS5 on release.
People forget that was the main reason why TLoU was released for PS4, The Nathan Drake collection, and many other former PS3 titles. It was for those gamers who did not purchase a PS3.
Hasn’t it always been the case that developers continue to work on their technology so each of their releases is technically more proficient than the last.
room @ about 20 seconds, is that the toy shop area from the first one with Henry & Sam?
@PhantomXIII That’s reduced loading times only. That is not an increase resolution and framerate, as far as I’m aware. If playing Spiderman on a PS5 gives it a bump in resolution and framerate, then I stand corrected, but I was talking about much more than just loading times from the new SSD.
I’m talking about the power of the PS5. Maybe they could do a patch for the PS4 version that takes full advantage of the PS5, but im not sure, and it doesn’t mean it will happen even if it’s possible.
I can easily see a GoTY definitive edition on PS5. There are people who will make the PS5 their very first console purchase, and I don’t think Sony will tell them they have to buy a PS4 game for their new PS5 system to experience this game.
With as high profile of a game as TLoU: Part II is, I would wager that a PS5 enhanced port is an inevitably. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Likely a non-issue since this is first party, but...how's it look on a Standard PS4? I'm sure a large amount of this gen's install base still plays games on those decrepit things, myself included.
@PhantomXIII
“Thus making ports meaningless”
Except financially.
Multiplayer coming to the PS5 version would certainly be a selling point for that version, but it would also really piss off a lot of PS4 owners of the game. I don’t think it’s that huge of a game that it wouldn’t be possible to put the multiplayer on PS4, so I’m not quite sure what justification there could be for excluding it. I have a feeling Naughty Dog wouldn’t want to deal with the backlash. If they say there will be no mp, there likely won’t.
But still, you only need look at the improvements from TLoU on PS3 to the Remastered version to see that the definitive version of a highly regarded game will sell well on the console if it’s made. I will definitely double dip if it comes out for PS5, and to be honest I’m more inclined to do so now that there is no multiplayer.
I don't think it will be ports or remasters. From what I can tell it seems all ps4 for games will run natively on ps5 (meaning not through an emulator). From my understanding, it's like playing game on PC but on upgraded hardware, it can run better(fps, res) but wont automatically run with new features of new graphic cards. However patches can upgrade the experience to use some new features or better quality old features.
On consoles, games have many different levels of effects they can use(aa, shadows, reflections, lighting), but only use lower levels of them because the console can't handle 'turning them all on max' because it is not powerful enough. So the designers pick a level and lock it in. Like a slider bar on PC that you turn up or on/off different features to get the fps you want. The ps5 will allow more ps4 games to crank it up to 'ultra' settings after being patched up.
I can't believe Sony isn't going to be upgrading some of the biggest games from the end of the current gen to help sell a new console. New system generally have minimal launch titles. But if they can have "enhanced ps5 editions" of TLOU2, GOW, Spiderman, Death Stranding, RDR2 and Cyberpunk, at or near launch, then you have an amazing launch of a new console.
Also, the mass of ps4 sales are non pro systems. So for original ps4, the upgrade will be even bigger.
I'm assuming this will have HDR support?
Holy cow it looks good!!!
@carlos82 I think Dina is deceiving Elie and her group, and betrays them, kills Joel in that recent teaser, and possibly Elie's whole group, and Elie having fallen in love and then getting betrayed sets out to kill Dina's group, which may be the cult, maybe that is another develooment.
Neil asked how far we would go for revenge. If they want us to feel that desire, the only motivation is Joel's death. No one gives 2 f**ks about Dina.
Also remember revenge is just the early motivation. Its like saying last of us 1 was just a story about getting a girl to a hospital so u get ur weapons back. Obviously there was way more to the first game that the protagonist didnt plan, so i dont think we have anything to worry about as far as story depth.
@DeepSpace5D You can add all that in an update like they did HDR. BC is there so people can still buy the original version.
@PhantomXIII None of these sites know if those games will be ported. Since the console has BC there is no way to justify ports. They will be able to just patch games to add enhancements.
@PhantomXIII Naughty Dog actually did do the same, long before Borderlands. All of their PS4 games got free enhancements on Pro, so I think ur right and it's safe to expect a PS5 patch. Though PS5 discs will be sold with the patches for those that dont own on PS4.
Safe to assume this for several other first party games as well. God of War could seriously use a draw distance increase, a major shortcoming in an otherwise beautiful game.
Many VR games will get same treatment. Skyrim VR will probly get enhanced again. It launched with Pro support, and both base and Pro versions got enhanced well after launch. Considering Bethesda's heavy commitment to VR, Im sure they will enhance Skyrim for PS5, and again for PSVR2, and will account for new controllers. I also expect Fallout 4 VR on PS5.
It looks just incredible and its going to obviously be goty material....... Buuuut i cant help what a ps5 version would have been like if built from the group up for ps5.
Lets be honest all of the ps exclusives Including god of war days gone and more look really good days gone in both skin details and environment. Im not really surprised with the look of last of us 2 bc playstation been dping a amazing job on every game they made so far
Btw cant wait imma beat it on the hardest mode like i did last of us. But the people out there who just aint getting it bc of mp u cant really call yourself a fan
Does look great but it's not 4k. Fake checkerboard 4k.
@PhantomXIII I believe it is Sony's best interest to release PS5 patch for all their recent AAA first party titles to help push the adoption of the new console. With PS5 expected to cost upwards of $499, it is a huge selling point to be able to play previous gen games a 4K 60fps. After all, with this level of graphics, it would be difficult for them to justify a remaster and another $59.
@Gumbopudding It isn't as straightforward, the reason why PS4 Pro and Xbox One X kept their Jaguar CPU for compatibility. It could be done via emulation, even so, the new console should have no problem achieving 60fps.
@PhantomXIII There is really nothing much they could justify a PS5 remaster with graphics already this good. A better strategy would be to use a free patch to entice a switch to the PS5. With game development taking longer, it will take a while before next gen consoles achieve a healthy catalogue of must have titles. Patches gives gamers an early incentive to make the switch and Sony the leading market share.
Worried that a base PS4 won't be handle this game as well as some other big titles coming out in 2020 (FF7, Cyberpunk 2077) BUT it looks fantastic and even if just to miss out on the inevitable spoilers it's probably a day one purchase.
I liked the first one rather than flat out loved it (actually prefer ND's Uncharted series in particular 2 & 4) but I can understand why so many rate it as one of the best games ever made. The prologue is outstanding and for me the game really clicked (haha) with me once we met up with Joel's mate. Before that point I'll admit I found it to be a but of a struggle.
@PhantomXIII I think there will be a PS5 disc because out of all the people that haven't bought yet, there are always those people that want all (or as much as possible) of the download to be on disc, so they dont need internet for the patch. Some dont have internet and some hate slow non-disc speeds. Surprisingly that is still a thing, even in the US.
I absolutely would just get the patch since I own the game, but if there is a major overhaul to graphics and you dont yet own the game, and you can get it all quickly on disc, I see the appeal. I dont think it should be more expensive though, unless there is DLC and they make it game of the year. The timeline would add up with PS5's suspected launch. Not saying Sony might not just charge full price regardless though haha. It really wont be all that long after launch of game.. 8 months or so.. not that that is an excuse.
