CD Projekt Red's next big RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, is scheduled to release on PlayStation 4 next April. However, as the launch of next-gen consoles draws closer, it has become a common assumption that the game will eventually be ported to the upcoming PlayStation 5. It turns out that is indeed looking to be the case, although it won't be happening at launch.
During the developer's third-quarter earnings call, board member Michał Nowakowski said that the studio is indeed aware of what's coming in the future and that it would be logical to expect CD Projekt Red to work with those forthcoming consoles. However, whatever it is the team is working on won't be releasing next November. "I will only safely assume that it’s definitely not going to be around the launch timeframe of these consoles, so I think that’s pretty much it."
The title will, of course, still be playable on PS5 thanks to backwards compatibility, but it looks like you can scrap any hopes of picking up a next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 along with the system at launch. It's not all doom and gloom, however, as the studio's president and joint-CEO jumps in to all but confirm the PS5 port will eventually arrive. "Our games were always kind of ahead of technology; they were always played best on strong PCs, so in many areas we are kind of ready or almost ready for stronger specs – so, from a technical perspective this seems to be doable."
So, you're not going to be playing Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 via a port this time next year, but it's very, very safe to assume that it will make its way to the platform natively at some point in the future. Are you going to hold off from purchasing the PS4 version of the game? Wait around in the comments below.

I haven't the patience to wait one more year to play it after all this waiting.
I have already preorder the Amazon uk exclusive. Possible I'll play the main story on ps4 and I'll leave most of the side missions and world exploration for ps5 edition.
I'll be buying both Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 again for PS5.
Depending upon on how PS5 handles backwards compatibility I can see a patch happening that increases resolution and maybe a 60 fps mode around its launch
I think most major titles released from now on will have a PS5 port/version. The question is whether this will be a free update or a paid for new version. The cynic in me thinks it will be the latter.
I would have thought that playing PS4 games on ps5 would make the PS4 version look and perform better(if the devs have coded that stuff in)a bit like going from a mid range pc to a high range pc.
Am I going to hold off from purchasing the PS4 version of the game?
Why are C.D. projekt going to do a Rockstar and change the viewing perspective and charge more for the change yeah ok i'll wait just for that.
@Arugula I don't get out of bed for anything less than 20 quid...
Going back in time....
Didn't Battlefield 4 have some sort of upgrade purchase from owning the PS3 version to the PS4 one back in the day?
I wouldn't mind doing that if the difference between BC PS4 and PS5 versions were noticeable and the price was right.
@Futureshark Yeah, a handful of launch games did offer paid upgrades to the PS4 versions. Whether the PS5 will do the same thing or not is a big grey area. It would be nice if that happens, though.
You gonna post about the microtransactions they promised wouldn't be in the game?
@teknium_ I would imagine running a PS4 game on PS5 would be like running a PC a game on the low settings and with a frame rate cap on a high-end machine. Where as the PS5 version would be like turning the settings up to high.
@Ryall Yea that's what I was getting at you explained it better than me though,so when putting the PS4 disc into the ps5 a patch could be downloaded to up the settings so to speak
@Kai_ Yup, after all that talk of no microtransactions, they are putting microtransactions in the multiplayer aspect of the game. Not that I care that much, since I only care about the singleplayer but still, it's a scummy thing to do. But they promise us "wise monetisation" whatever that means lol.
I won't be able to wait for the port but it would be great if you could "upgrade" your version from PS4 version to PS5 for a small cost if you bought it digitally
@Amusei @Kai_ You might want to watch this https://youtu.be/pIM9ROyEfIk
Wait for official news of how they are going to charge for the separate multiplayer experience which is still in early development. It's a bit silly to be getting outraged before facts are known.
I have had patience to wait this long and I am sure I can wait another year or so. To be fair, I am not that hyped about the game anymore, apparently the third person camera is a huge deal to me when it comes to sandbox games.
Yup, I'm gonna wait for ps5 version
No! Not going to wait I've had it pre-ordered from day one you could pre-order. At the same time I will be waiting on all other games in 2020 until PS5 unless they offer a upgrade option.
@BearsEatBeets I'm not bothered that much by it, I'm sure it'll be fine compared to EA, Bethesda or Activision. It's just a bit controversial when they explicitly stated there would be none.
Developers need to consider the effort taken in bringing 4K, 60fps to the PS5. If the PC version is already doing it on day one, I don't think they should be charging for the patch.
I think this is a strongarm move by devs to secure revenue whilst not offering the product on the PS5 'in the near future'.
If they confirm for PS5 they know a considerable portion of the market will hold back. They have they hype to look at a business model potentially like GTA5.
I think it comes down to personal preference. Some will wait, some won't. But don't complain for upgrades or buying twice.
Its strangely bad news, i dont want to bother with the ps4 version knowing the better one will be on its way at some point. I guess it matters how long the wait will be. Its funny because though id rather play it on ps5 i almost wish theyd just say that its strictly ONLY releasing on ps4, then its a very easy choice
