Go on, have a guess at what the five most popular PlayStation games of 2025 were in the US. We'll give you a few seconds to finalise your bets.
If you need a quick hint, here it is: it's the exact same top five as 2024.
As per usual, Mat Piscatella has handed us the data via Circana's own Player Engagement Tracker, which, again, has pumped out the same list as last year. Some things simply never change, it seems.
These are the top five most played PlayStation games (across both PS5 and PS4) in the US for 2025:
Yep, it's them again. Fortnite's eternal appeal comes as no surprise whatsoever, and the same goes for Roblox and Minecraft, which continue to engross so many younger gamers.
Grand Theft Auto 5, meanwhile, still stands as an unprecedented juggernaut. It's going to be mad seeing Grand Theft Auto 6 sitting next to it this time next year (assuming the sequel isn't delayed again).
Call of Duty is maybe the only game on this list that you stop to question. It's been widely reported that Black Ops 7 struggled in terms of sales — at least by Call of Duty standards — but that clearly wasn't enough to drag the property's overall popularity down. The brand's just that big.
For what it's worth, the top five most played games on Xbox were the same as 2024 as well — just with the order slightly rearranged.
Did you honestly expect anything different? How do you feel about the overall trends of mainstream gaming here in 2026? Don't try to change anything in the comments section below.

I tried replaying the GTAV campaign again but ran out of steam. Just couldn't do it.
And y'all wonder why they're taking their sweet ass time to release 6...
Roblox should be banned, its disgusting Sony, MS and such allow it on their consoles and stores.
Sad to see Roblox on the list
More games than ever being released on a daily basis and the same old games at the top.
It's funny how apparently people don't have the time to play JRPGs, yet spend hundreds if not thousands of hours playing these games.
In my entire life I never played even a minute of Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft.
Kind of insane that it's the same list, positioning and all, for two years in a row.
Admittedly my only exposure to Roblox was a Dunky video but if all the content is similar to what he played it looked like cobbled together garbage. It's really hard to fathom why it is popular.
And this is 1) why companies no longer want to release new IP and 2) why subscription services have a hard ceiling. The majority it seems has no need of 500 games to play when 1 will do.
Watched my nephews play Fortnite and I gotta hand it to them it looks fun and there's always something new for them to do.
Watched my other younger nephew play Roblox and it looks like utter trash.
I tried my best to introduce my nieces and nephews to top tier single player games. I failed miserably. Games such as Rayman Legends, Mario Wonder, Astrobot were described as boring, so they are hooked on that digital crack that is Roblox/Fortnite.
I myself have been gaming for almost 40 years and consider cutting back. I already have considerably by reading more and more books than picking up a (insert your controller of choice here). PS5 & Switch may be my last consoles, the future of gaming has to be something rather special to make me keep throwing money at it.
With so much to choose from it's sad these same titles remain at the top.
And apart from GTA5
We know why we get rinse and repeat COD
and companies trying for a Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft type development game.
I can’t imagine the money those games draw in with extras etc.
The fast food of video games
@DennisReynolds got banned in my house a couple of kids were unhappy about that 😅
@DennisReynolds If you only knew. It's more dangerous than leaving a loaded weapon in a child's playroom. One day parents will realize how far it goes, hopefully. Every experience I have with that game is non PG, and it's ongoing. But there are folks doing something about it, even if the companies who should be aren't. I think if people knew the truth they'd never hand a child a console again. Or let them out of their sight again. The player base on there is not what parents think it is. I went through the same thing on other games and Roblox makes it easier than any of those previous titles or platforms. It's a playground of a completely different sort. I can't say anymore about it, just that you are more right than you'll ever know. Happy belated Christmas too.
I personally contributed by playing 2 hours of Minecraft this year total out of the top 5.
@MightyDemon82 Good on you for reading more! I think you get to an age where you want something different or more fulfilling, and reading did that for me.
In related news, PCSX2 got a robust 2.6 update the other day... it's been a blast playing through a bunch of classics that I missed the first time round.
@naruball Yep, when people say they don't have time for a 100hr SP game but go on to play MP games for 1000s of hours. Or buy 10 different 10hr games for say £200+ when they could've just stuck with that single £60 100hr RPG.
My kids are probably mostly responsible for #4 and #5. I don't understand Roblox, it's just poor fan made carbon copies of better games, many of which we have, but they don't play those. Then on top of it I have to monitor them from time to time due to the social media aspect (my son is 15 but autistic, and my daughter is 13). I've had so many conversations with them about assuming they are conversing with predators, and the dangers of it all. God, it's sad how predatory gaming has become since I was a kid, with not just that but all the microtransactions, paid DLCs, scam games, etc.
Can honestly say I didnt put a single second into any of them in either year. As somebody who is pretty exclusively single player orientated nowadays it really highlights how marginal my gaming habits are and how niche my taste is
Why just show top 5?
@GuttyYZ You should join us in the 'What are you reading?' Forum thread, always nice to hear what others are reading and add to the ever growing TBR with new recommendations 😉
@Dalamar “In my entire life I never played even a minute of Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft”
I’ll do you one better and include GT5 and CoD on that list!
Actually though, I did play about and hour of Fortnite once and a few minutes of a CoD game about five years ago at the behest of a friend, and I think I played a couple hours of Minecraft on an iPad back in the day. Probably a total of 4 hours on all these games in the last 10 years.
Fine by me. I’m just going to repost a prior comment of mine.
———-
Unsurprising list but I don’t really get why people are angry or disappointed about it. When looking at the commercial state of the industry I think it’s useful to look at what succeeds (by the standards of the developers) rather than merely what sells best.
For example games like Dragon’s Crown, Returnal, Street Fighter 6, Disco Elysium, Helldivers 2, Balatro, Baldur’s Gate 3, Pacific Drive, Returnal and Stellar Blade all met or exceeded the expectations of their developers. Their success encourages (and enables) the developers to keep doing what they are doing and encourage other developers with similar visions to try their luck.
Seeing this list of games just makes me sad.
I finally tried Fortnite, and the menu is like 100 menus threw up. I spent so much time just trying to understand it.
Falling from the bus was fun, but after playing for about 30 minutes I started to get so bored. The falling from the bus was actually the funnest part, and was over way too fast.
Something like Stardew Valley I totally can understand someone playing for years and years, but I really don’t get the mass and ever lasting appeal to Fortnite.
But I’m clearly in the minority since an overwhelming number of people love it, and have for a long time.
I also really value diverse experiences and want to experience different things. Even games I love, and return to, I still need to play other games between them, in different genres, and about different things.
Not surprised, but I wish people wanted better. Minecraft is fine with me, but I don’t get how people aren’t bored to tears with those other titles.
It’s really not that hard to believe. People are looking at the games specifically but I think a lot of people here and companies included don’t understand:
1) High cost of buy in to pay and play online games vs. free
2) People play where their friends are
3) If your friends don’t move to a new game or the newest sequel of the current game their playing, YOU won’t move either
When companies want to continue their pay to play model it’s no wonder the list is skewed towards free to play games (considering the only other games are large player base games immune to number 1 above).
Just goes to show proper gamers like us have better taste in games than the mainstream 😅
I was stuck on Elder Scrolls Online for 10 years so I get it.
@datamonkey with the amount of PS4 and PS5s out in the world, it mainly shows we're the minority. Nothing to do with "Good Taste".
@Enigk they’re all multiplayer games . people like to play games with their friends
@MightyDemon82 Funny you mention reading. Tiktok used to waste my time last year. Now though, it has helped me find great books lol. I am like most here, an adult, and I think gaming just doesn't have the wow factor anymore. Fun hobby, I like to stay up to date on it. Nothing wrong with it at all for those who live and breathe it. Reading, hiking, and trying my hand at piano (poorly) are what I end up doing a lot.
@AhmadSumadi Planetside 2 did that for me lol. Probably spent $300 or more on that game. 8ish years sunk into it.
Well it says a lot, casuals don't need other games, they also don't care for quality either, as long as it's talked up enough or has easy to understand ideas, aka no quality, the rest of us do care about how games are or what we play, so why not still buy and play those.
I mean I played flash games sure, but to me I still separated them from my major gaming experiences. Same with Minecraft mods, I treat them differently to other games, it seems most casuals if any don't at all. I'm busy archiving or writing up wiki pages for Minecraft mods that are gone, even niche modloaders, and at other times playing major or Indie games.
Same as when I was/do from time to time aid in the manufacturer demos or other things for Gran Turismo wiki as well.
Also hours counts don't mean much. People can play a lot of garbage content in those games despite how good they are, or have the console sit around.
I'm fine with Minecraft but more so Java Edition.
That aside eh to me multiplayer games are so bland these days their maps/abilities are just not fun anymore.
Singleplayer games any day. I care about curated game ideas (cough not these days with bland movesets/level design), not socialising, brands and other fancy things, alongside bland lacking depth.
To me it's not monetization, it's gameplay sucks these days.
I can play music while gaming or I can pay attention to the game's dialogue or sound effects, depends per game, I still expect games to be of quality, not some easy thing for my thumbs to do.
Music or videos of quality to experience while gaming, not slop.
Surprised cod is so high
my nephew is still into roblox and fortnite but he has started branching out into the soulsborne, god of war and other single player series in the last couple of years, so not all hope is lost out there in the cultural wasteland.
@pyrrhic_victory yea I tried a while ago and got bored. I’m looking forward to gta 6, but am getting tired of the format.
PS5 is 4 or 5 years old, maybe it could get a separate list from PS4? I know it's probably the same but w/ the install base of each I'd like to see 2 separate lists just in case.
@nomither6 I understand the social thing but there are other multiplayer games being released. I know someone who plays just Fortnite, Minecraft, GTA V and Forza Horizon 5 on Xbox and seldom with friends although does play Roblox occasionally with friends on PC. That is all they play and have done for years. They also watch the same few TV shows and movies over and over again. How do people not get bored of the same game after such a long time?
@Enigk Because of no alternatives to replace what they’re playing or like, most likely. Also , multiplayer games have evolved so much and have gotten so huge that they’re called live services these days, so these type of games are just massive time sinks.
not to mention that multiplayer games barely even get sequels anymore so developers just milk the same game they’ve been updating for years
I never played numbers 3-5.
Number 1 i played one time for 30 minutes years ago
Number 2 i played BO3 a lot, BO4 came with plus for maybe for two hours, MW Remake for PS4i played that so much. And no COD since.
It makes sense to me. I put in more than 80 hours on expedition 33 and as much as I liked it, I probably won't touch it again in many years. Even though I don't play those top 5 games, I play other games so I won't waste time doing a new game plus or whatever. I'll play it until I'm satisfied and keep it going. Went from expedition 33, to mafia, to now playing Yotei.
So even if ten of us spend 50 hours on a particular game that's only 500 hours.
If 100 people play a fortnite or whatever for 6 hours then that's 600 total hours.
The list is gonna stay the same for the next five years, easy.
This is humanity
Is it concerning that Infinity Nikki didn't make the list
@Dalamar I played one round of Fortnite about a decade or so and uninstalled immediately after. I am definitely not the target audience for most current gaming trends but luckily there has also been many many excellent single player games of late.
I wonder if the list would change over time if Sony took some inspiration from Nintendo and created a PS+ tier that’s only like $20 a year, NSO is a lot cheaper than the current PS+ and Game Pass tiers.
How the hell do you get these people to play something different 😩
And here I am a 25 yo living on his own in a 3rd world country still playing Classic DOOM on my OG Xbox.
@Judal27 they probably do, but single player games are finite, one-and-done. those top games in the article have unlimited replay value because they’re multiplayer so naturally more playtimes gonna accumulate
I find this actually depressing. So many great games and it’s the same 5. I bet I could guess the next 5 as well
And other companies keep thinking that they can get a piece of this pie.
Just utterly garbage. The McDonald’s of gaming right on that list.
What GTA has become is truly depressing, I can’t even get excited for 6 because it will be more of this online rubbish.
@11001100110zero yeah we’re definitely the minority, was a tongue in cheek comment.
@Judal27 you don't. My niece and nephew are not interested in video games. I even gave them my ps4, but they don't use it. They played Knack II at my place and really liked it, but when they got the ps4, they never touched it again. They only play fortnite and Roblox on their phone, I think. Or even worse (imo), passively watch others play them.
I guess Call of Duty isn't dead after all, not surprised
And some people wonder why some gamers aren't upgrading from a PS4...
Cod and gtav aren't on the top 5 on steam tho.
@BearsEatBeets I spoke to me niece and nephew about this a few years ago when they were younger and heavily into Roblox and they just said it was fun. They got to play with their friends for Free in an almost unlimited number of games, they treated it almost like an infinite Mario Party / Warioware / Game Pass.
They didn't care about jank, they didn't care about good graphics, framerates or narratives or the same things we do, they just wanted to have fun and hang out with their friends.
While I find the number of players on Roblox alarming (more than PlayStation and Xbox combined) I also see it as a gateway to other gaming. My nephew, now older, likes Assassin's Creed, Zelda and i've even got him playing a few top tier indies we talk about. My niece inherited my first Switch and plays what we would consider better games but still jumps back into Roblox.
And people get mad when you say that PlayStation has mostly a casual audience.
Doesn't surprise me at all, MP games are infinite and SP games have a short life span. If it wasn't these titles it would be a different MP game. My youngest is always on Minecraft, pretty much every night but on PC. Pretty sure 6 to 10 are the same, probably more. I regularly keep an eye on PS gametracker and the most played games are always MP with dashings of SP as they come out then inevitably die off.
Parents bought a ps5 for their kids to play the exact same games they can play on a cheaper hardware, maybe they already own.
Right now on PS timetracker there are 2 SP games in the top 20 most played, Cyberpunk at 17 and Yotei at 19. They do play other games just not for as long.
I can see the old power/money hungry politicians causing even more geopolitical chaos and upheaval as our younger generations remain distracted and apathetic by mind numbingly mediocre entertainment/technology. Ugh.
Steam list isn't much better:
Apex Legends
Terraria
PEAK
Dota 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Delta Force
Stardew Valley
PUBG Battlegrounds
Grand Theft Auto V
Marvel Rivals
Counter-Strike 2
R.E.P.O
@pyrrhic_victory
I am playing through it now for the first time since Ps3 days and I love it. On 92% completion so far
Kifflom!
@Netret0120 Glad to hear it. I beat it initially on 360, then PS4, but I haven't been able to get through it again on PS5. I'm so beyond ready for GTA VI at this point 🤣
Christ these people must have the smallest imaginations
