Death Stranding is a game all about connecting with other people. To that end, if you play online, you can engage in some interesting asynchronous multiplayer elements, such as leaving items for others to discover, or helping each other out in combat. Of course, you'll need to be a member of PlayStation Plus to access this part of the game, right? Wrong.
Recently, UK retailer GAME listed the newly unveiled Death Stranding limited edition PS4 Pro. Looking closely at the box, you'll see a notice about PS Plus in the bottom left corner. It reads: "Paid-for PlayStation Plus subscription required for online multiplayer. Sold separately. Death Stranding does not require PlayStation Plus subscription."
In other words, everyone will be able to go online in Death Stranding and use its multiplayer features, whether you're a Plus member or not. As mentioned, a big part of this game is about connection, so it makes perfect sense that Sony has relaxed the rules for Hideo Kojima's enigmatic action adventure.

Nice! Didn't think they would actually do that.
It's great that everyone will have the same experience on PS4.
It’s sounding a lot like Dark Souls multiplayer, which is great. Hopefully there’s notes, I love that level of communication.
Sure that’s being interpreted correctly? Sounds to me like it’s saying, “you’ve got to buy PLUS for multiplayer” but “Death Stranding doesn’t REQUIRE it”, meaning it isn’t an online-only game (but would still require Plus to access multiplayer). I hope I’m wrong about this, but I’m just not convinced yet. Not until Kojima makes a statement about this...
Why am I paying to play online in other games? Should not be one rule for a Kojima game and another rule for everything else.
Yeah, I'm not sure you're reading that right but it'll be cool if true.
@hotukdeals someone got Kojima envy?
Maybe this is the start of a good thing. Free to Play games like Fortnite don’t require a PS plus membership and the number of players that has must cause a heavy strain on the servers.
Anyway, this is nice (if true).
That's pretty awesome if true! Love helping people in the Dark Souls/Bloodborne for bosses and stuff, so if you can do that sorta thing in Death Stranding without Plus count me in for the Krazy Kojima Train!
For those who aren't sure (I wasn't either to start with), compare it with the same disclaimer on the box for the CTR Nitro-Fueled bundle: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crash-Racing-Nitro-Fueled-500GB-Bundle/dp/B07RVC5RFB
"Paid-for PlayStation Plus subscription required for online multiplayer. Sold separately." Technically, you don't need PS Plus to play CTR, but that's not specified in this example.
Whereas it's clearly pointed out that PS Plus isn't needed for Death Stranding.
I don't know, I still think that's jumping the gun a bit.
I'd wait for official confirmation rather than trying to interpret a sticker on a box.
In Hideo Kojima we Trust.
Other game developers take note we like this a lot. P.C. users play online free to expect us to pay a yearly tax plus broadband is a joke.........but I am lot laughing Sony.
@Quintumply is it not just possible that they have updated their wording to make it 'clearer' (whether it has or hasn't!)? I absolutely read that as online multiplayer requires PS+, which you can buy separately, but don't worry, you can play Death Stranding without PS+. It definitely doesn't say you can play Death Stranding online without PS+.
Wait, hold up. Death Stranding has multiplayer?
I think the confusion comes from the fact this is not a game box but a console and game box. So it has to say games online require psn+ for that's how it generally works on psn for other non f2p games and also has to state info about the specific game.
This is why it may sound contradicting, it's trying to describe both in the one yellow box. Should be written in two different little yellow boxes.
So while I did read it originally as multi requires + but solo doesn't, now I'm not sure either way.
I'm so far out of the Death Stranding loop that I didn't even know there was multiplayer, instantly felt a bit sick when I read it, but then felt better after I read the article. It was a rollercoaster.
I'm quite sure that yellow box have been put on every bundled PS4 lately. But I'm not gonna check it because I'm lazy and nobody pays me to do your Pushsquare's job. 😋
@THGhost The entire idea of it is that, just as the player character is reconnecting America, players are forming cooperative asynchronous connections, or strands, as they play through the game.
I'm still a bit leery about the whole thing, but after watching the extensive gameplay demo, I'm feeling increasingly okay with it. It's weird, of course, but it looks like Kojima is going to pains to innovate and explore new styles of open world game design. I admired that aspect of Breath of the Wild, and I admire it here as well.
@Ear_wiG 'Sounds to me like it’s saying, “you’ve got to buy PLUS for multiplayer” but “Death Stranding doesn’t REQUIRE it”, meaning it isn’t an online-only game (but would still require Plus to access multiplayer).'
That's how I initially interpreted it, as well.
@Quintumply the back of the death stranding case does not say ps plus required. At least the pic i saw when i googled it.
@Ear_wiG - Totally agree. I honestly can't see how there can be any other interpretation of the statement.
More likely is a missinterpretation...
@b1ackjack people can play together in Bloodborne, that's why.
I'm glad Death Stranding seems to be reverting to the pre PS plus ways but let's be real here, no online game should require a paid subscription to simply access multiplayer features. The fact that so few seem to care about the issue anymore is really baffling to me.
We do a lot of walking in games anyway and calling this an outright walking simulator is just wrong. Whether Kojima can make the exploration or the "Strand System" interesting as opposed to traditional NPC interactions and random combat remains to be seen.
