Re: Best PS5 External Hard Drives

solocapers

Agreed with @the_new_butler don't get an external ssd.

I got this one

And the sabrent ssd to usb connector.

Works great and as noted already, digital foundry recommended it. So you can be assured it has good performance.

Re: Sony Invests Another $200 Million into Fortnite, Unreal Engine Creator Epic Games

solocapers

Tbf the Unreal Engine powers not only major games but now with it being used in TV and movies it's a decent bet.

Remember playing around with the unreal editor back in the day to make incredibly basic Unreal Tournament maps.

Really impressed me how big they were then and how they've somehow managed to get even bigger. Just wish Fortnite didn't get as big as it has or I would have had another Unreal Tournament.

@agramonte

The only reason Epic is fighting apple and Google is to make a bigger cut for themselves. They're undercutting steam to take their customers away. They're no robin hood here they just want a bigger proportion of the market to themselves.

Sony and Microsoft charges the same 30% cut to publish on their store. The only reason Epic isn't going after them is that it'd be almost suicidal.

Re: CDPR Refuses to Drop Cyberpunk 2077 Development, Plans to Sell It for 'Years to Come'

solocapers

@Brydontk yep, but it's better to be honest than pushing a crap experience.

Do you honestly believe that someone on a One S is ever going to have a half decent experience?

I'm sure the developers themselves know it's a task they'll never really manage. The texture streaming issues are fundamental problems that no amount of tweaking will sort and further exacerbated by the base consoles.

Heck.. to alleviate the fps drops a little bit they've lowered texture load in priority.

It's an impossible balancing act sadly and while disappointing for those not on next gen systems by the time they say they can do no more a huge proportion will have moved on anyway.

Re: PS4 Clock Battery Problem Proven, But Don't Panic Right Now

solocapers

Game preservation is very important.

Regardless of if YOU think it's a non issue there is a large retro gaming scene that likes playing on original hardware.

From time to time I boot up my megadrive and PS1. If this issue were built in to those older consoles then they would be essentially bricked.

Emulation is not perfect (regardless of how good it can be - even the great emulators can't play some games or bring in imperfections that weren't there on the original hardware) and custom firmware should not be needed to use a product purchased in the far future given then Sony have a legal right to try and bring down the websites distributing it.

This isn't a non issue and is anti consumer. Remember when most playstation fans were gloating about Microsoft going down the "always online" route.

With Sony being big headed with the whole game sharing "thanks" video?

Yea, look at how that's aged.

Re: Rumour: Sony Planning 'Counterpunch' to Xbox Game Pass

solocapers

@ATaco that much is obvious. They can't keep buying studios the way they are and release those titles for GP without eventually hiking the price.

It's all about the hook then the squeeze. It's basically the Uber and new tech startupa that haemorrhage money for years model.

Re: Sony Game MLB The Show 21 Will Be Free with Game Pass on Xbox, Full-Price on PS5, PS4

solocapers

@BamBamBaklava89 in fairness Microsoft's model isn't sustainable.

They're basically doing an Uber and burning through money till the competition ceases to exist then they'll jack the price up and or the quality diminishes.

I actually half expect Microsoft to go the Netflix way in that they'll publish smaller games.. guage interest and continue developing or kill without finishing the product.

Re: PS Store Spring Sale Goes Live with 500 PS5, PS4 Deals

solocapers

@NateGoesLive did you seriously think going digital would have made gaming cheaper?

No offence but should have stayed with physical consoles till they pull the plug, otherwise you've absolutely no choice to shop around.

This is EXACTLY the position Sony want..lock you in digital then drip feed sales to appear like steam but keep certain titles max price for as long as they can.

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.2 Detailed, and It's Absolutely Massive

solocapers

@Giancarlothomaz I think people forget that the Witcher 3 was also incredibly buggy and badly optimised on release too. It wasnt as bad as CP2077 granted, but it was still very buggy and wasnt ever really in great shape till the first DLC came out.

Im glad they're fixing it.. but im just going to wait till the PS5 version releases before getting back in to it (was only about 15 hours in on the PS4 Pro anyway)

Re: PS4 Owners Are Worried Their Games Won't Work if a Clock Battery Fails

solocapers

@jorel262 the battery will absolutely die it's as inevitable as night comes after day.

There's just no reports on modern consoles simply because they're in use and keep the charge topped up and healthy but it's the same battery used all the way back to the PS2 and Dreamcast era: CR2032

And trust me.. they die as I've had to replace on both consoles due to being in storage for long periods of time. They're also nasty for the motherboard when they leak and it's a good idea if you keep a console in storage for potentially years to remove the battery.

Re: Microsoft Reportedly Opening Its Wallet Once Again for $10 Billion Acquisition of Discord

solocapers

I don't see how discord has anything to do with playstation to be honest.

It's a popular app in the pc space for sure and being integrated with Xbox would make sense in a way with the convergence of pc and xbox but it has no impact on on the playstation ecosystem itself.

A huge proportion of the channels on there have nothing to do with gaming with porn channels and general chat about non gaming topics.

If anyone was going to buy it I'd think Amazon/twitch would be a better fit imo due to the large amount of non gaming channels.

How Microsoft police it if they brought it under the Xbox banner would be interesting.

Re: Soapbox: PSVR's Crap Load of Cables Has Put Me Off

solocapers

That was one of the biggest reasons why I got rid of mine. The lack of HDR passthrough. Such a faff to disconnect and reconnect.

Yes I could have got the upgraded version but I wasn't spending around another 300 quid on another unit.

Ridiculous that they sold the VR and the pro around the same time and it didn't support of of the big selling points of the pro at the time.

Re: Reaction: What Next for PlayStation?

solocapers

Sony should open up a WRPG studio or acquire one and that's most of the Bethesda threat nullified imo bar ID.

Obviously requires a talented team and quality output which is much easier said than done.

Microsoft's current position is not imo anyway sustainable long term. Atleast at their price point. Those prices for gamepass are going to have to start rising sooner rather than later or the output is going to have to be more frugal with emphasis on microtransactions and paid dlc.

The only problem is that Microsoft can afford to sell at a loss for a long time just as they've always done to snuff out competition.

It seems like they are willing to do the whole Uber and modern tech startups and haemorrhage money till it works.

Re: Denuvo Anti-Cheat Technology Available to PS5 Developers

solocapers

I honestly can't say I've seen any cheating since the PS4 other than bug exploits which this and any cheat software won't mitigate so the 77 % must be coming from the pc space which as we all know is where the aimbots, wallhacks and file edits are.

I'd be curious to know if there's any such things on PS4 and ps5 due to the firmware locks bricking modded consoles from online on the console space.

Edit. May obviously be useful for crossplay titles.

Re: Here's a Better Look at the PS5's Beastly Development Kit

solocapers

@Hyperluminal yep the only reason it's so big is because they save having to mess around with putting loads of time in to making sure thermals etc are ok along with using "thrown together" parts to simulate expected end performance.

Slap it in a big ugly case with plenty of fans and extra expansion ports. job done.

Worth keeping in mind the Dev kits go out atleast a year before the consumer design is finalised.

Re: Sony Launches Strategic Partnerships to Support Black Communities

solocapers

@BloodNinja I love how me not having a profile pic is annoying folk today.

I've done plenty research thank you very much and I'm sure if you have also you'll know how many of the fortune 500 companies CEOs are non white?

Work that out as a percentage of population and you'll find it's massively skewed. Care to think why? Or is that just a "generalisation" that doesn't fit your frankly, stupid opinion.

Re: Sony Launches Strategic Partnerships to Support Black Communities

solocapers

@TrueAssassin86x I don't have a profile picture? Big deal, it's a site for checking news. Does a profile picture of crash bandicoot make me more legit? I'm afraid a profile pic is way down the list of things I care about.

@Snick27 people were warned if they weren't going to post anything nice then don't bother. That's why I called it out. Especially after a previous ban for god knows what.

Re: Reaction: Japan Studio's Disbandment Is Disappointing, But Not Surprising

solocapers

@Keyblade-Dan Umm Polyphony Digital says hello.

Re the article. It's a fair piece.

I think the biggest reason people are gutted is because it leaves Sony with very little studios that don't make 3rd person open worldish adventure games.

PlayStation studios are basically morphing in to ubisoft way of working using a template idea shifted to fit the story.

I've a feeling that's going to bite Sony on the arse long term when gamers eventually get bored of it.

Re: Sony Japan Studio Winding Down Internal Development Efforts, Says New Report

solocapers

To me that reads. They don't produce narrative based 3rd person action adventure games that sell millions so bye.

Honestly, as much as I love GOW, TLoU and Uncharted I'm beginning to get tired of this kind of game and it's largely all that Sony's studios produce now.

Give them a smaller budget and let their creativity flow... Not everything needs to be "triple A"

Sony is going all Hollywood here in similar way to how all the studios are just interested in superhero movies.

Re: Poll: Who Should Develop New Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania Games If Konami Is Outsourcing Them?

solocapers

Leave MGS as it is. Unless it's a bluepoint remake.

You can't retcon the story just to keep the series going it's perfect* as it is beginning to end. Solid Snake is MGS and it's crapping on Kojimas work to find non existent gaps to continue the series.

*Other than the missing story in 5 it's perfect that is.

Some things should be just left as they are. I'd be all over a re-release though.

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 Approaching Two Months Absent from PS Store

solocapers

Even if they iron out the bugs etc its still a fairly middling game.

NPC's are pretty horrific, the driving is poor. The much hyped player style choices do very little in terms of the storytelling.

Unless they fix the bugs and pretty much re-do most of the game its never gonna be blockbuster release they so hyped.

Re: Buy the MemCard Pro and You'll Never Need Another PS1 Memory Card

solocapers

@Dandan1984 Yea they wouldnt have developed it without talking to the community to see what they would like. Probably sell a few k units. Which isnt bad for the target market.

The pricing may seem high for what it is but with the relatively limited run they'll get out of it then they need to make their development time, associated costs and make some profit in the process.
