It’s nearing a year since The Last of Us: Part II released and subsequently secured virtually every award available, and so some fans are pondering what’s next for Naughty Dog. We know that the team is working on a fully-fledged multiplayer game set within the series’ post-apocalyptic universe, but many had anticipated seeing it by now. Of course, it’s worth remembering that we’re in the midst of a global pandemic, which will have heavily affected workflows.
Neil Druckmann, the developer’s co-president, has acknowledged fans’ thirst for new information on Twitter – and he’s urged patience for the time being. “We have several cool things we can’t wait to share with you,” he teased. “As soon as we can, we will!”
There’s a lot going on at the Californian developer right now; in addition to the abovementioned multiplayer title, it’s also collaborating with PlayStation Productions and HBO on The Last of Us’ television adaptation, which recently cast the roles of Joel and Ellie. We suspect that its flagship PlayStation 4 sequel will also be remastered for next-gen, and we imagine it’s sowing the seeds for a new project behind-the-scenes as well. Lots to look forward to, then!

Hoping is more about the current gen upgrade, the multiplayer and hopefully new IPs.
It's kinda wild thinking about the fact that TLOU2 was revealed in the same year Uncharted 4 was released. So I could see them revealing their next game (not Factions) within a year or so.
Just give me that Last of Us multiplayer goodness please... I need it!
I'm glad factions isn't out yet. If it was, there wouldn't be a lot to it. My feeling is, it's Naughty Dog, I trust them probably more than any developer currently working. The more time it takes, the better it's going to be.
Hopefully one of those cool things is the PS5 upgrade. Im looking forward to 60 frames per second and... a new PS5 trophy list! (Why not)
Pretty confident it's not the Uncharted movie by all accounts...
TLoU 2 DLC What really happened It was all a dream by ellie....
@Playstation Me too.
I could easily see Sony positioning Factions as one of its premiere multiplayer exclusives for the 5. They've been open about wanting to make more of them. They're going to want to wait and get it right.
I'm not really interested in Factions, to be honest. Not a multiplayer guy.
But a next-gen upgrade for TLoU2 and a potential new IP are things I definitely want.
I'd guess the announcements end up being TLoU2 Factions, TLoU2 PS5 upgrade (maybe both happen at the same time) and TLoU Remastered for PC (possibly also TLoU2 for PC).
Jak and Daxter says what?
Another non-multiplayer guy patiently(-ish) waiting for PS5 TLOU2. Pretty please, with sugar on top, take us out of our misery soon.
@themightyant Same. Anytime I hear "multiplayer" i immediately think "NEXT". I just hope they don't go down the Rockstar route and release a game that's a massive online hit, then bleed it dry for 10 years, whilst hardly releasing anything else.
60fps update please. And DLC. And a chance to adopt Ellie and look after her.
Don't care about Factions or a PS5 update for TLOU2. New IP, please! (Or Uncharted 5...)
@ISD1982 Urghhh the stuff of nightmares
Thankfully I don't think this is the case. ND has been really good at having frequent releases. 5 entirely new games in the last decade (Uncharted 3, 4 & LL, TLOU 1&2) + Left Behind and some collections and remasters (TLOU:R, Jak & Uncharted Trilogies).
Compared to most studios this is rapid.
@Playstation I haven't played TLOU2 yet, (patiently) waiting for PS5, BUT one criticism that seemed quite common was it was quite long already. Cut content is usually cut for a reason so I hope it isn't added just to bulk up an offering.
It's like Directors cuts of movies that are rarely more than bloated self indulged offerings to appeal to the hardcore, and often worse than the theatrical release.
@Playstation always stay hopeful. They brought back Quavers Prawn Cocktail from the dead so anything is possible,
@RBMango same! I am solo / story driven all the way. I’ve never played a multiplayer game and don’t anticipate I ever will.
PS5 version with Factions 2, only 69.99+ depending on region.
*Factions mode not available on PS4.
Man what I really really need is a 60fps patch on TLOU 2 for ps5 via bc, please!!! What could be causing this to be taking so long?!?!?!?
@NemesisSam30 they make such a fantastic sandwich!
New IP is what I'm all about.
Give me that ND magic but with a spacey sci-fi twist, or a dead serious High Fantasy romp
@themightyant Nah, Lord of the Rings extended editions are the ONLY editions as far as I'm concerned.
A director's cut of Part II would be great, sometimes scenes aren't cut because they're no good but more because they're not seen as an essential part of the story especially for the uninitiated. A DLC would be sweet as well, maybe featuring Lev and Yara.
@Col_McCafferty Agreed on LotR EE. They did Faramir (and Boromir and others) dirty in the theatrical versions.
But those are rare exceptions, there are others, but most 'Directors' cuts are self indulgent.
@Mintie hell yeah
Uncharted 4 patch would be nice
@themightyant a last of us game can never be long enough 😅
@Playstation long... But... Same as when I was playing uncharted 4, any progress I made was covered by a sad feeling of knowing I was closer to the end.
My buddies and I are dying for Factions!! We were really hoping it would show up at that terrible state of play. I hope that soon is actually soon because while I want them to do it right, I also want the game now!
TLOU2 with some story DLC (What happened with Joel and Ester) PS5 version. Factions debut and the announcement of a new IP if it's ready to be shown will make me happy ND. I want Part 3, but new IP first, I'm just getting over the sadness of part 2.
I’m also not a big multiplayer guy but ND tapped into something uniquely engaging with factions. I’d really like to see ND inject some of it’s storytelling prowess into this multiplayer offering, perhaps greatly expanding the clan metagame into a fully fleshed out base building foundation.
I Imagine taking care of my clan with a few buddies; building barracks, food halls and medical facilities by raiding other settlements for supplies. Maybe you have to survive for a year, with each season presenting it’s own unique challenges, such as winter affecting visibility during incoming assaults or the need for more wood to burn. Maybe you’d have to fend off the odd clicker horde.
It would be nice to have a visual representation of these sim management aspects beyond menus, and also allow ND a route to play around with some kind of narrative, without being too intrusive to the competitive nature of online multiplayer.
I may be expecting too much from this, but as a fully fledged multiplayer release, I’m expecting something unique and deeply layered with a lot of longevity, I know ND is capable.
@Paranoimia a new uncharted is probably being made by the new studio they just created
@Playstation Director's Cut AND factions 2?! Don't do it, man. Don't give us hope.
@twitchtvpat Yeah, but that's all hearsay and supposition at the moment. Either way, I'd prefer ND to make it... highly unlikely, I know, but I can dream.
I think its interesting he mentions a few things and says he can't talk about it.
Sure there's the MP game but I m sure he means the new IP too. Both reveal this year I think.
There was a time I was hyped (don't like the word but whatever) for anything they are on about but now I just want to know the details to know if Id be interested.
Factions please I’ve been playing since 2013 I’m so so keen
I’d be so cool like teams of four in battle Royale in that universe
@Lightning13 Pi I’m 2000 hours in it’s nuts it’s like the best multiplayer ever
Please do a separate trophy list for TLOU2 Factions when that comes around. Not a big multiplayer fan and I don't want to have to play it to get back to 100%.
I've a bad feeling given the lengthy wait it's going to be a full priced game for ps5 with MP and a 60fps mode for the single player game being sold as a "remaster" with quips about increased texture detail which will be barely perceptible.
If it's full priced I'm not going to bother.
@Playstation umm they were cut for a reason like scenes in films get st before released
