Re: Xbox U-Turn the First Step Towards Gamers Rejecting $80 Games

johncalmc

Nintendo can get away with it because Nintendo fans will buy anything. Xbox trying this is a much tougher sell, particularly when their main competitor is holding steady at $70, and double particularly when the game you're introducing the new pricing with is Outer Worlds 2. Still, all's well that ends well I guess. Except for Xbox, who look pretty silly. And Obsidian, who had their game sabotaged by the idiots running Xbox.

Re: Free PS5 Fashion Platformer Infinity Nikki Seeks Redemption in Blue Tears Update

For all of the drama surrounding the 1.5 update has it actually made any difference to how many people are playing? I have no idea. I play the game, but I don't really talk to people about it, I don't have friends on there, and I don't dabble in the multiplayer. I just play it on my own, and I'm not in reddit threads talking about the intricacies of the gacha system, so I have actually no idea what the impact has been.

For me it didn't make a difference. I liked the apology currency for the whole thing. I mainly just do my daily stuff each morning.

Re: What the Hell Has Happened to Call of Duty?

johncalmc

It's a game that seems primarily focused on encouraging children to convince their parents to pay massively over the odds for inane microtransactions, so this tracks. Why does anyone even care? The artistic merit ship sailed for Call of Duty like a decade ago.

What I'm mostly surprised about is that they've completely thrown their art style out of the window for an IP that hasn't been relevant in twenty years. If you're gonna throw animated characters in at least do Minions or whatever the kids are into these days.

Re: Metal Gear Solid Series: How to Get Started and All Games Ranked

johncalmc

I'm only here to say that I came into this list expecting to be annoyed and then I read it and it's almost exactly the way I would have ranked the games. I'd maybe swap 4 and 2 but otherwise, this is exactly what I think about MGS. I don't think I've ever agreed with an internet list before. Quite a turn of events.

Re: 'Sure, Here's a Revised Version': The Alters Taken to Task for Blatant Use of Generative AI

johncalmc

I really wish they'd make a rule where you have to announce this stuff so we don't have to do the whole buy game, play game, someone finds AI pish, drama time cycle.

That way we could at least make informed decisions on what level of AI dreck we're willing to accept. Like, this I'm not so fussed on, but really, how hard is it to write background seasoning text like this? Clearly not very, if you're willing to accept something you didn't even write. So just write it.

But we're at the tipping point, and seasoning will suddenly become the side dish, and before we know it the whole meal. We should know what we're supporting before we buy.

Re: PS Plus Essential Games for July 2025 Announced

johncalmc

I can't remember the last time this happened, but a few weeks ago I was totally lost with what to play and felt like an RPG and I had my finger hovering over the button to buy Diablo 4 but I didn't and ended up playing something else. This is a rare PS Plus win for me.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Officially Game Over for PSVR2?

johncalmc

I know I'm just one man, but I can tell you based on my actions what I think one of the big problems this thing has is. I was super interested in PSVR2 but I didn't buy one at launch because I didn't expect other people to buy it, which meant that it probably wouldn't get great support, which meant that it would probably seem like a wasted purchase, and with so many conventional games to play without having to spend half a grand on new hardware I decided to wait for it to play out.

I'm not Nostradamus - those things were pretty easy to predict. So I wonder how many other people made the same choice. And so it's not necessarily a lack of interest, but more of a lack of belief that it'll sell and thus be supported. I'm certainly glad I didn't spend money on it.

Re: 'The Story Is Weak': Stellar Blade Dev Acknowledges PS5, PC Fave's Biggest Flaw

johncalmc

I quite liked the story just fine. Like, it's not great. I'm not sitting there for weeks thinking about it after I've finished the game. But it's a perfectly reasonable yarn that gives you enough reason to run around smashing fools up with a sword to a kick ass soundtrack. On paper the story might not be up to much, but as a part of the whole thing, the game has great vibes.

Re: Final Fantasy 16 May Have Underperformed on PS5, But It's Doing Terribly on Xbox

johncalmc

I'm not a fan of Gamepass at all and think it's wildly destructive to the industry, but if you're Square Enix and you're porting Final Fantasy XVI to Xbox you've got to put that thing on Gamepass. Take the money and run. Because it ain't gonna sell.

It's basic stuff. Imagine the demographic you're working with. Your target audience is the crossover point of people on Xbox that are still buying games - small - and JRPG fans that for some reason bought an Xbox instead of a PlayStation - presumably small. Sure, there'll be stragglers. But it seems like a non-starter.

Absolute madness.
