Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is both critically acclaimed and adored by fans, serving as a great follow-up to the first game in the remake trilogy.
However, fans quickly became concerned about the game's sales performance when publisher Square Enix said it was falling below its notoriously lofty expectations.
Players have been worried in the time since, but the title's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has commented on the matter, aiming to allay any further concerns.
Speaking to Automaton, here's what Hamaguchi said when asked about Rebirth's sales:
Subscribe to Push Square on YouTube166k
"The second entry, FFVII Rebirth, has been doing very well on both PS5 and PC. I know some fans have expressed concerns, but please rest assured, we’ll be able to deliver a proper, high-quality third installment."
So, despite Square Enix's early comments about sales, it would seem the game is doing just fine.
Furthermore, Hamaguchi seems very confident in the third game in the FF7 remake series.
"Development is going extremely well, and the game is shaping up nicely," he says. "A lot of the content is already playable, and the game’s direction and form are firmly set in place. Right now, the team is united around refining everything."
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is being released on Xbox and Nintendo systems in the near future, and Rebirth itself will follow suit, which will give it a further bump.
There's no word on when we'll learn more about game number three, but it would appear that everything is going smoothly, and that fans need not worry.

I feel like we always have to take Square Enix sales news with a grain of salt
Would have sounded much more credible if they disclosed sale numbers, as Capcom habitually does.
Ah, Square Enix and their mood swings.
No offense to Hamaguchi, but when it comes to Square's game sales talk, I tend to put a lot more weight into what they say during their corporate financial meetings, where fiduciary obligation is a thing, instead of what the devs say.
It's doing so well that they decided to make it multiplatform.
If there's any reason fans are worried about its sales it's because Square Enix has made out like the game has been a complete and utter disaster.
I have complete faith that SE will deliver with part 3, Rebirth was my GOTY last year
@get2sammyb Square poo-pooing their sales numbers is a meme at this point. I'm more surprised when a game actually does meet or exceed their sales goals these days because it rarely happens.
Square-enix thought rebirth would immediately sell the same amount as remake on the PS4. What they forgot was that the PS5 didn't had the same amount of units sold and that they lost a big part of the fans, because of weird story choices.
FF17 can outsell GTA6, and they’d still consider it a disappointment
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony told Square to stow them talks about it being the PS5's fault for "lacking" sales.
Sony should sit down with the publishers and just tell them either stop the ***** talk on ps5 or hey let an exclusive xbox release carry you and see how that does for your sales
It took me time to buy and playe the game, but I'm in chapter 9 now, Gongaga, and this game is one of the most extraordinary I ever played. It's really impressive, jaw dropping. Square Enix firing all cillinders!!
So why on earth SE president said as if the game is a big flop and pointed his fingers at Sony while screaming "no more exclusives, we're going full multiplat!"?
It seems there's some big clash between SE higher ups like Kiryu and the devs like Nomura, Yoshi-P, etc.
The original FF7 is on my all-time top 10 and the first remake game was incredible, and changed up the experience in surprising and mysterious ways.
Gaming is incredible... And nowhere is Play better than PlayStation. Sitting here in my bed with my daughter playing on the portal Horizon Forbidden West. It is on par with Ragnarok which was chock-full of quality!
Well Pushsquare has really squeezed every sort of article out of final fantasy 7 and 15 sales, so who's making a big issue out of it.
@PuppetMaster
Seriously, I cannot find any comments by the Square Enix president blaming Sony or PlayStation directly for any of their recent games underperforming. They only said “profits unfortunately did not meet expectations” and they want to “shift to a multiplatform strategy”. Sounds more like a Square Enix problem to me, as their games are too expensive to keep them exclusive to one platform. Going multiplatform doesn't mean they'll stop developing for PlayStation. There's nothing wrong with targeting more players.
@TrollOfWar Here's the president mention PS5 install base as the factor for FF 16 sales didn't reach their high expectations
https://www.eurogamer.net/final-fantasy-16-sales-did-not-meet-high-expectations-says-square-enix-president#:~:text=Blames slow adoption of PS5,a limiting factor%2C Bloomberg reports.
SE received a lot of money from Sony in exchange for exclusivity with Sony also helped with the marketing. All those could help SE to balance the budget. So this "it's too expensives to stay in one platform" sounds like a weird excuse. If they think the cost are too high then why they accept Sony's deal in the first place?
@PuppetMaster
You're correct, that does sound like the Square Enix president is blaming PS5 for FF16 underperforming.
Square Enix are like mercenaries. They take money from the highest bidder. They also took $ 100 million for Rise of the Tomb Raider's 1-year exclusivity on Xbox, and afterwards released the game on PlayStation. From what I remember these Final Fantasy exclusivity deals were limited to 2 years on PlayStation, so afterwards Square Enix can release the games wherever they want. It's surprising that it took ao long for them to do so in case of FF7 Remake.
LOL SE is talking itself into trouble... Shut the hell up! I really hope Sony isn't stupid enough to fund FF 17 again.
SE will probably be acquired by Tencent in a few years anyway, and that's entirely their fault.
Square Enix is the definition of backstabbing mfers lol
I'm still waiting for those SWITCH AND PC EXCLUSIVES to come over to Playstation 5. Where's Bravely Default and Harvestella? Apparently they don't care or complain if the game is Switch exclusive...
Anyway, I haven't bought anything from SE since last June and i don't plan on changing this so soon
I'm worried about the third part of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy because it's being made by the same people who made the first two games in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.
And yet he does not provide a number to go with that statement.
People are concerned and worried over a game’s sales? What?
@get2sammyb I love FF7 but it takes so long. I lost interest would love a graphical update with a Cloud and Tifa and as a couple. A 5th rumored weapon for Cloud to be real and some extra summons.
Dont get met wrong the game looks fantastic bit i just want to play the complete game.
The worst thing was locking summons beind a more expensive version. It's not a bad game bit it takes so long people lose interest.
Glad to hear that.
