Re: 'I Want to Celebrate Everything I Love About the Games': Zach Cregger's New Resident Evil Movie Looks Like a Blast

johncalmc

Whether or not this movie looks good is kinda irrelevant to me. I liked Weapons. This looks fun.

My problem here is with this insistence on making a movie based on a video game but it's "an original story". Then it's not a movie based on the video game, is it? You've taken the name of something popular to try and sell something else.

I'm not saying we need a one-to-one here but can we not just have a Resident Evil movie set in the mansion with Barry Burton in it? Wesker? Hunters? Those ceiling things? That fella that gets chomped by the snake? A movie that gets the tone right? Do a Last of Us and take the source material and just build on it and flesh it out?

Maybe I'm wrong - we've only seen a teaser - but this just looks like a horror movie with the Resident Evil name slapped on it.

Re: Xbox Is Flip-Flopping on PS5 Again, and It's Truly Getting Tiring

johncalmc

I must say I did prefer it when it was clearly game over and everyone but the most delusional fanboys accepted Xbox was toast and we all moved on. I don't think I've got it in me to go back to the "no really next year will be the year Xbox turns it around" days. The console wars. The embarrassing lack of basic knowledge about the games industry being peddled by Xbox YouTubers and eaten up by a community desperate for a win. The begging for acquisitions. Those cringe banners people made of all the Xbox characters together and all but one of them were just characters Microsoft bought. Oh man. The dark days.

Still, hopefully this is all just corporate bluster and we can just get back to Xbox being dead.

Re: This K-Pop Idol Tycoon Game Might Be Our Dream PS5 Sim

johncalmc

This is the problem with websites banning the use of first person in writing and having to adhere to the professional we. The headline says that this is our dream game. We can all see that. But we all knew, deep in our hearts, the second we read it, that Sammy wrote this.

Re: Xbox Game Pass vs PS Plus: Was Sony Right All Along?

johncalmc

It's incredible to me that anyone - even some respected journos - were ever trying to argue that Gamepass made sense financially. Anyone with a basic understanding of the games industry could tell it was at best questionable, and at worst a hail mary attempt at brute forcing relevance for the ailing Xbox brand that was only sustainable because they had a rich daddy to bail them out.

It never, ever made any sense. The only way it was ever going to work was if the ridiculous value convinced enough players to go Xbox, but with subscriptions stalling at around the 30 million mark it was simply not enough. Probably not even half of what they needed to make it make sense financially.

I'm glad the first domino has fallen in Call of Duty, and I wonder how long it'll be before other games start disappearing from the service. Hopefully we can put this thing in the ground before it does any more damage.

Re: Rumour: Xbox Debating Whether to Make Its Games Exclusive Again

johncalmc

Xbox going exclusive again makes no sense because a) nobody was buying Xbox when their games were exclusive which is why they went multiplatform, and b) why would anyone who was thinking of buying an Xbox based on exclusive games trust that they won't go multiplatform again? It's stupid. Backwards. A total non-starter.

So they'll probably do it.

Re: Rumour: Call of Duty's $300 Million Xbox Game Pass Gambit Could End

johncalmc

This is quite a pickle for Xbox really. I'll be interested to see what they do with it. If you have everything in Gamepass except Call of Duty then it creates uncertainty - how big does a game have to be before you can't get it on Gamepass anymore? Will any other games be removed?

If they keep Call of Duty in Gamepass then it's obviously not going to work financially because Gamepass doesn't work financially. I bet they wish they could erase Gamepass from everyone's minds and get out of it.

Still, watching their next move will be fascinating.

Re: Opinion: I Played Kingdom Hearts for the Very First Time, Here's What I Liked and What I Didn't

johncalmc

Kingdom Hearts is one of those things I'll never truly understand. I don't get why it's a thing or why people love it. It's all the worst parts of modern Final Fantasy with Donald Duck screaming in your ear the whole time.

That said, it has some charm although I think that charm wanes as the series goes on. I was into all the Disney villains teaming up in this one. That's kinda awesome. But then it gets into the real story and ruins it with nonsense.

I've never actually finished the series. I made the probably dubious decision to platinum every game and I did this one, the rubbish card one, 2, and... I don't know. I got to the one where you play as three people and then got bored.

Maybe I'll go back one day but it seems unlikely. I'm glad I played them so I know what all the fuss is about, but I don't really like the gameplay and I don't really like the story so... it's just not really for me.

Re: Poll: Do You Think PS5 Can Outsell PS4 with Its New Price Point?

johncalmc

Yes. I think people will keep buying it despite the price increase. The price isn't even that bad. Everything is more expensive all the time but for some reason everyone seems to think a video game console has to be $399 forever. Stupid people made stupid decisions and now you're paying more for everything - video game consoles included. And that's just how it's gonna be.

Re: The Last of Us Multiplayer Was 80% Complete Before Cancellation, Spent 7 Years in Development

johncalmc

What I don't get about this is could they not have finished it as just a normal, plain old multiplayer game without any of the live service guff that people hate anyway? Why does every multiplayer game have to last forever? Surely they could release a multiplayer game that people play for a few months. It would have sold. And that's gotta be better than just axing the whole thing after seven years.

I don't really care because I don't play multiplayer games and I'd rather have Intergalactic but I mean I don't know man.

Re: Opinion: Does Starfield Suck? People Keep Telling Me to Skip Its PS5 Release

johncalmc

I think Starfield looks kinda boring from what I've seen of it. But then I always find Bethesda games a little boring - in a kinda good way. I know that seems counterintuitive. But we're not talking about Uncharted here. I like walking around the world, finding quests, new loot, whatever. I'm still going to play Starfield because I think it will be my kinda boring but I get that for the "most important RPG in a decade" people might want a little more than an ancient feeling Fallout in space. That just sounds right up my street.

Re: '$1,000+ Consoles Could Become the Norm': PS6's Price Touted to Touch Four Figures

johncalmc

Honestly, I would still buy it and I think loads of people would. I get why people are aghast at the thought of it because it's so much more than previous consoles. But to me I see £1000 for a thing I use every day - or almost every day - for what, five, six years? I spend £2 a day, five days a week on coffee. Five years of coffee costs me like £2500 and it's not even good coffee.

Re: Sony Announces Gigantic PS5 Price Increases, Effective from April 2026

johncalmc

I might be in the minority but I don't think this is going to have a huge impact on their sales. Everything is more expensive. Have you seen the prices of olive oil? Ludicrous.

The console was already a silly price and it keeps selling. PS5 Pro is comically, laugh-out-loud priced and it's selling. Maybe I'm wrong and people will finally say enough is enough but I honestly think it won't happen and they'll keep selling.

Re: PlayStation's Disastrous First-Party Leadership Culminates in Yet Another Studio Closure

johncalmc

I don't even know what to say about this. Call for Hermen Hulst's job? Make the obligatory joke about Fairgames still being in production? Blame the whole thing on live service? Who even cares at this point?

It feels like PlayStation Studios has reached the part in The Wolf of Wall Street just before the music kicks in and everyone starts getting arrested. The impending catastrophe seems inevitable at this point.

Re: PS5 Players Seemingly Skip Marathon as Sales Estimates Look Very Weak

johncalmc

Seems likely and not at all surprising. Even at a lower price-point, releasing a multiplayer only game that would have been an additional mode in a much meatier game a decade ago into an environment in which most of its competitors are free is problematic. No reviews at launch - a problem of their own making.

From the outside looking in, it appears to be over-engineered. There's too much of a concept here for multiplayer. Lore, backstory. It's a game that seems perfect for a killer single player FPS with a multiplayer suite, but is instead chasing the live service dream.

If you want the big bucks then give people a free game with Scooby Doo skins. If you want to make a good game expect lower sales. Sure, there are exceptions. But they're exceptions, not the rule. I don't know if I'd be disappointed with this. I don't know what they were expecting. Maybe if they support it, strong word of mouth will give it a long tail.

Re: Congratulations to Resident Evil, 30 Years Old Today and Better Than Ever

johncalmc

My dad had to buy me the first Resident Evil because it was a 15 and I was like 13 or something. He took some convincing because he was concerned it might be full of naughty words. Anyway, I got it. Massive game for me. Loved it. Loved the first three actually. Played them all 100 times.

I'm kinda over Resident Evil now. I still play them but they're all the same. Start somewhere interesting but the games are too long and get worse as they go on.

My controversial take is that Resi 3 Remake is the best one because it dials back the nonsense puzzles and doesn't outstay its welcome. Nobody on earth agrees with me on that apparently but that's okay.

Anyway, congrats to Resident Evil. Shoutout to Barry Burton.

Re: Saros Dev Explains How the PS5 Game Is More Approachable, Customisable Than Returnal

johncalmc

I'm glad it'll still be hard. Not that I'm one of those git gud people or anything. I play games on easy sometimes too. But Returnal for me really hit because there wasn't shortcuts or grinding to brute force it. You really had to learn it. And I thought it was such a fantastic shooter that I loved that. It took me 124 hours to beat it though, so maybe a little easier would be good.

Re: Jim Carrey Confirmed to Return for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in New Teaser Trailer

johncalmc

I've never seen one of these probably because I hate Sonic the Hedgehog but for some reason I've always had a kind of respect for Robotnik. I like his vibe. Plus he has rad boss battle music in Sonic 2. Like all timer good. Wonder if it's on Spotify. Wild it is! I'm listening to it right now. Yeah this rules.

Anyway, I might watch this one day. Why not?
