The boss rush bullet hell action game Furi from French studio The Game Bakers is a memorable 2016 release for the PS4. Such was its popularity, it was later even ported to the PS5.
And now it’s getting a miniseries starring Barty Shepherd and Yanick Ghanty, releasing straight to streaming from 8th November.
We’ll be honest with you, this looks exactly like you’d expect it to – like a fan film, we’re afraid. One fan compared to the work of parody channel Mega64. Ouch!
We’re not cinephiles so we can’t exactly put our finger on why, but the types of cameras used and the terrible costumes give it all a distinctly low-budget affair. Maker Midnight Embers Productions says it’s self-funding the whole affair.
To us, it lacks the neon flair of the source material.
Furi was all about its cyberpunk aesthetic, but this looks like it’s been shot in someone’s back garden.
We’re all for independent creatives fulfilling their visions, but we’re not entirely sure why The Game Bakers would sign off on this. We don’t think it’s going to raise the profile of the game – honestly, it could even hurt it.
Nevertheless, here’s the blub:
“Enter Furi and meet The Rider, a lone warrior, who, after years of incarceration in an otherworldly, mystical prison, has been freed by a mysterious figure known as The Voice. He must now battle his way through surreal worlds and brutal environments – each ruled by a powerful Guardian hiding deeper truths. Our protagonist confronts each of his formidable captors as he faces the ultimate mission: to save his species from extinction.”
How many of you are going to set aside the time to watch this one, then? Personally, we think we’ll give it a miss…
