Square Enix has announced it is bringing back Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past in a new PS5 version pitched as a Reimagining. It's releasing on 5th February 2026, and you can catch the debut trailer above.
The new Reimagined version of Dragon Quest 7 includes "charming diorama visuals, updated gameplay mechanics, and a streamlined story". The main narrative has been streamlined to make it more accessible to newcomers, and will now be told through "a series of vignettes with an overarching narrative".

Meanwhile, the battle system has been overhauled with new vocational perks, battle speed adjustments, and an auto-battle option. "Battles can progress without interruptions between each turn, depending on the tactics selected for the protagonist and allies. While on the field, players can pre-emptively strike monsters and instantly defeat them If the monster is weaker than the party."
The title costs £59.99 / $59.99 for the base version, or £69.99 / $74.99 for a Digital Deluxe Edition packing bonus items and two days of early access. Digital pre-orders are available now.

I don’t like the idea of a “streamlined” narrative. Give me the full story. All the games. Tell me which order to buy them in and I will.
I get the feeling I may be missing something however. By streamlined they may mean sped up, according to some things I’ve read elsewhere. Anyone know if anything is missing?
Glad 8 will be next.
The re-remake. I think streamlined makes sense personally, it's SO long. They can cut some of the fat for sure.
I’m looking forward to this, although I’m not entirely sold on the art-style. I’m sure it will grow on me with time, though.
this is a great announcement. I've heard from many fans that this is one of the greats in the series, and its been stuck on 3DS and PS1 for too long. I don't mind them streamlining it. Square has made a lot of good design decisions lately, so I'll trust them
Wasn't SE already remake this game for 3DS or that's a remaster?
But i notice SE recent outputs are dominated by remakes & remaster:
It's...kinda sad. But i guess the fans wants these remakes and remaster.
Game looks great,
I will definitely buy it
Looking forward to replaying this one. That said, I'm glad it's "streamlined". A 100+ hour game just isn't in the cards for me anymore.
@4fold DQVII is an extremely long game, they're probably planning to trim the fat or at least relegate some of the scenarios to optional content.
Like with any remake, I recommend playing the original beforehand, but prepare for a whale of a video game if you do.
My now most anticipated game of 2026 alongside Fire Emblem.
@get2sammyb Have you actually played DQ7? I played 8, 8 was great, but that's about it before 11.
When I watched this I thought it might be the 3rd game in that spinoff series, Builders?, or that other spinoff series, so many DQ games, and I was kinda surprised it was based on an old game it looked so different.
Probably wouldn't pick it up day 1, and I wouldn't pay more for early access which you forgot to complain about, but it did look good. Probably years down the road. Especially if it's really long.
I actually think those character models look awful lol. I'll probably buy it on a sale and play way later cause I really wanna play the 3ds version instead
Honestly, I'm a little confused by what this is. Is it a remake of DQVII with some story or elements of the game cut out?
Cause to an ousider, that sounds kinda lame. The art style is unique and Dragon Quest-y. I guess I just need to learn more about this before I invest too much care into it.
DQ3HD2D and DQ1&2HD2D are plenty DQ for me for a while.
Radac on Twitter compared the graphics to Lazy Town and now I can't unsee it.
@get2sammyb there's more remake news to report. Fatal Frame 2 got a re-remake and Danganronpa 2 got a remake.
I hope the next SoP didn't fill up with remakes.
I was waiting for Square enix to be hypocrites again and make it a switch exclusive
@PuppetMaster well happily just take hd ports of games, but good god square has just gone fully into the small budget and risk in remakes this gen
All these DQ reduxes and no DQ8. If it's not the next one, we riot.
@PuppetMaster fans want an actual remake of FF7. Not the monstrosity that we got. Nomura clearly went insane making the KH games. Surprised he didn't call them Re:make and Re:birth.
Seems adorable though my mild OCD is troubled by the fact they are remaking the series in two different styles.
Okay, looks good.
I have never played Dragon Quest games before and it looks like I will pick this game the PS5 version.
The remake with less stuff in it than the original is certainly a choice.
@Anti-Matter DQ3 HD-2D remake (out now) is a good place to start. Then DQ1-2 HD-2D out in late October. All incredible games if you like the feel of a grand adventure and controlling a full party (Though DQ1 is a single character game).
Why does the prince look like a character straight from a Bo Selecta episode lol
This is freaking awesome! I have a lot of fond memories of playing through the original version on PS One. Now we just need a remastered version of DQ8!
I'm glad they didn't go with HD-2D.
I remember playing DQ7 when I was younger! I loved it but it was far too long, I'm fairly sure I was bored by the end of it so a streamlined version sounds good.
The faces look really off in the cutscenes. I think they need to revise the designs.
I'm all for streamlining 7. I played a fair amount of it and it is horribly paced. I wanted to like it but found it super dull.
But also, DQ12!?
@get2sammyb I’d actually say the opposite in that I think the 3DS version was too streamlined, I’d be happy with a middle ground between the obtuse nature of the PS1 original and the simplified 3DS version. I also expressed my wish for this remake like a couple weeks ago on here and now feel compelled to buy a lottery ticket.
@SuperSilverback Proper bo!
Another game announment were you make it seem like it's a Sony exclusive 😂
This was welcome news. Getting it for sure!
@Noone2025 I what way? In no way was I led to believe this was a Playstation exclusive. The only time it's mentioned is in the title, and this is a playstation website. They arent going to bother listing all the platforms it's available on
I use to play turn based JRPGs regularly back in the day, but the appeal has waned in recent years.
However, this looks good IMO. If it reviews well, and isn't a slog, will probably consider it.
i played seven when it first came out it was the longest rpg game i ever played..
@Noone2025 its almost like this is a playstation website
@4fold
Each game is stand alone for the most part.
Dq7 doesn't have any major links to any of the other games.
Plus dq7 is a very long game, streamlined means more of decreasing grind and trimming some of the fat from the original plot. From what I've read for square enix, it will still be the full narrative. It just won't drag out for as long.
I saw the original is close to 80 hours by just mainlining the main quest, hope this game is close to it's original in game length, I personally don't want a 40 hour game with tons of content cut
I take it back. This is the only acceptable way I would want a Chrono Trigger game to look if "remade". The Toriyama style just looks so good.
You know... it's not bad, but i just couldn't bring myself to finishing it. The pacing is frankly horrible. It's designed like an anime where each episode aka island is it's own little adventure and without a central plot i lost interest.
This was on the 3DS remake. This new remake looks better but i still remember how bored i was of it all. Ofc, copious amounts of grinding.
i still have my original dragon quest 7 ps1 game game to play if i choose to.
Wtf, the chiby CG graphics looks really good, now I want ff7 remaster with this kind of graphics rather than realistic graphics on ps5, of course it have to be a complete story, not divided like the remake.
@4fold the original game could take anywhere from like 120 to 200 hours it was ridiculous
@Drago201
That’s how long my Yakuza playthroughs take to 100%. If the game is good give me more.
@JohntheRaptor Serious question: What made the 3ds remake of DQ7 a monstrosity?
