All the rumblings were true: Sony has just officially announced its next State of Play presentation, in its regular late-September slot.

With about 35 minutes of third- and first-party games included, we're left wondering what the show might entail. This calls for another set of predictions!

Below we'll be going over a few key points we reckon are likely to come up during the State of Play, and in just over 24 hours, we'll find out if our collective thoughts are on the money or total nonsense.

Before we stare into our crystal ball, though, let's go over what we know will be there.

Saros Reveals Itself

Let's Predict State of Play September 2025 2

Saros is the next game from Housemarque, the team behind the excellent Returnal. Announced at a State of Play earlier this year, we've been promised a look at gameplay later in 2025, and the time has finally come.

Sony has said we'll be getting an "extended look" at the roguelike action title. "Look forward to nearly five minutes of gameplay captured on PS5," the platform holder has said. Thank you, Sony — we will look forward to nearly five minutes of gameplay captured on PS5.

Aside from Saros, though, there are no other officially confirmed games with a slot in this State of Play, so let's get predicting.

Absolutely Marvel-ous

Let's Predict State of Play September 2025 3

Sony's established a great relationship with Marvel Games on the strength of Insomniac Games' brilliant Marvel's Spider-Man series, and that's set to continue, with two other titles ripping superheroes from comicbook pages.

The first of these is Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, a 4v4 fighting game produced by Arc System Works. We reckon this State of Play is as likely a place as any to announce new characters and stages. So far we know about eight characters (Captain America, Iron Man, Ghost Rider, Storm, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Ms. Marvel, and Starlord) and just one stage (Marvel's New York), so it's high time we saw a couple more, right?

A shoo-in for the character roster has got to be Wolverine, and we can certainly see the mutant getting some time in the spotlight.

We think he could be revealed for Tokon, and if he is, that could also lead into a new trailer for Marvel's Wolverine, announced way back in 2021. This seems like a no-brainer one-two punch to us.

Marathon Is Still Running

Bungie's upcoming extraction shooter Marathon has been through the mill, pushed back after pretty negative feedback from playtests.

It's meant to be launching before the end of this fiscal year (April 2026), so we can't imagine it'll be left too much longer before we start to see more from the sci-fi FPS. Maybe a beta test of some sort is on the cards in the near future, for example.

Having said that, it sounds like the team is skipping this State of Play entirely, apparently not providing an update until November at the earliest. So, don't expect to see this one during the presentation.

Stellar Blade Gets Spooky

Let's Predict State of Play September 2025 5

The fan favourite hack-and-slasher Stellar Blade has already teased something for this week, and as a Sony-published game, it would make total sense for the news to drop during this State of Play.

It's speculated that this is some sort of horror-themed DLC, potentially even lining up with the release of Silent Hill F with a collaboration. Whatever the case, Sony's presentation seems like the best place to slot this.

Resident Evil Requiem Reintroduces Leon S. Kennedy

Let's Predict State of Play September 2025 6

Sony often partners with Capcom for announcements during State of Play presentations, and with all sorts of rumours swirling about Leon Kennedy being part of Resident Evil Requiem, we reckon this might be the place for it.

Whether Leon will be a playable character or simply fills out the wider cast, we don't know, but surely Capcom knows longtime fans would be thrilled to play as him, even if it's just for a mission or two.

The survival horror title will be mainly about newcomer Grace Ashcroft and her journey, but we reckon some old familiar faces like Leon would bring the house down.

Phantom Blade Zero Carves Out a Release Date

Let's Predict State of Play September 2025 7

The extremely promising Phantom Blade Zero is a super stylish action game that we're all pretty pumped for here at Push Square Towers, and we've been waiting to see when exactly we can get our hands on the full experience.

A PS5 console exclusive, developer S-GAME has said that a release date will be announced before the end of 2025. This State of Play seems like a good spot for news like that, doesn't it? A flashy new trailer, a release date, some pre-order details perhaps? Sounds good to us.

PS Plus Shows Members What's Next

Let's Predict State of Play September 2025 8

A State of Play is the perfect excuse for Sony to bring up PS Plus, its subscription service that grants access to multiplayer, monthly games, and a whole lot more depending on which tier you use.

We fully expect some sort of PS Plus update during the show, probably announcing games coming to the service in October. One that could be quite likely is Tomb Raider: Anniversary, which had its Trophy list pop up online recently.

There will probably be more to the update than that, though. Sony's become quite fond of announcing indie games coming day one to PS Plus Extra, so maybe we'll get one of those. Little Devil Inside? One can dream.

Giving God of War the Side-Eye

Let's Predict State of Play September 2025 9

We're a little more cautious about this one. Rumour has it that a side-scrolling God of War game is in the works, allegedly taking us back to the Greek era in a Metroidvania action platformer.

It honestly sounds great to us, and we'd love to see it make an appearance. Odds are that the next major God of War title is some ways away, so this would be a nice, smaller entry to tide fans over.

It could be present here, but we're not super confident about it, especially as Sony is in the habit of only talking about one or two games at a time.

Wishful Thinking

Let's finish this off with some pie-in-the-sky predictions. These are unlikely to happen, but know that we'll be popping off in our staff chat if any of them come true.

  • Anything Bloodborne. Got to mention it, at least.
  • Dragon Quest 12. It's been ages, guys.
  • Final Fantasy 9 Remake. Come on, make Robert's day.
  • MotorStorm. It deserves a comeback!
  • WipEout. Every PlayStation has had a new WipEout game of some description; don't break the combo, Sony.
  • Shenmue 4. Sammy was joking, but it's going in.
  • SEGA's retro revivals — Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and so on. Give the fans what they want!
  • SUPERHOT PSVR2 port. This one's for Aaron.

Predictions complete! That's all we have this time — we're excited to learn how smart/dumb we are when the State of Play airs. What are you expecting to see during the presentation? Tell us in the comments section below.
