Ah, the curious case of the supposed Final Fantasy 9 Remake.
Despite being strongly rumoured for months leading up to the original game's 25th anniversary (which took place on the 7th July), the project was never officially announced.
Here we are in the middle of September, however, and the anniversary celebrations are ongoing. Indeed, Square Enix just published a second wave of lovely fan-made Final Fantasy 9 art, and the publisher's social media channels are still posting anniversary-related news every few days or thereabouts.
So what's actually going on? Does the remake exist, or is Square Enix just milking the occasion to a borderline absurd extent?
Well, there were murmurings that the remake would finally show up at the most recent Nintendo Direct — but that obviously didn't happen. As such, hopeful fans are starting to eye this year's Tokyo Game Show, which is set for the 25th September (that's next week!).
Honestly, at this point, we've lost a lot of faith in the remake being... well, real. It's entirely possible that the project did exist at some stage — hence the once snowballing rumours — but it may well have been cancelled.
Still, it's hard to shake the feeling that this months-long celebration must be leading up to something. Even by Square Enix's often baffling standards, yapping about Final Fantasy 9 for months on end, with no obvious goal in mind, is weird.
What's your take on this whole situation? Does the Final Fantasy 9 remake exist, or has delusion taken hold of the believers? Feel free to shrug in the comments section below.
