Sony have bought the rights to Crash Bandicoot, and have contracted Kojima to create a thought-provoking, postmodern retelling about the futility of apples in crates.
I came to the Sony party a little later. My first console was the PS One, with a copy of Final Fantasy IX, and to this day it remains my favourite instalment. Of course, I then delved deep into the huge library of PS games, including FF VII & VIII, MGS, Tomba, Legend of Dragoon, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Croc, Resident Evil and WWF Smackdown. I even still remember being wowed by the FMV, which was pretty foreign to me as an N64 fan, as well as the notion of multiple discs for bigger games. As far as I was concerned, it was sorcery!
First of all, the misleading title. It should be the greatest games right now, rather than all time.
You mean to tell me Dark Souls 2, GTAV and The Last of Us deserve the top honours? Greater precedence over genuine game-changers like Tennis for Two (not Pong), Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Tetris, Mario, Zelda, Sonic, or Doom? Or even more modern games, like GTA III, Halo, Wii Sports, Nintendogs, or Minecraft? As far as I'm aware, they've all aged perfectly well, and had more of an impact than Edge's high-ranking tripe. Also, no Super Metroid? WTF?
Being broken and unfit for release didn't stop Unity from getting high scores. Just like Skyrim on PS3, the faux outrage by the gaming media only happened AFTER they dished out their publisher-appeasing praise.
I have played almost every AC, but my enthusiasm for this series is long gone.
"Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection is no slouch."
Considering Golden Abyss is missing, and the multiplayer content has been cut, I'll have to respectfully disagree.
As much as I love the Uncharted games (current apathy toward U4 notwithstanding), having a compromised trio of last-gen games billed as one of the PS4's big hitters this Christmas is utterly embarrassing. Xbox One is getting Halo 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, and even the deader-than-Elvis Wii U is getting Xenoblade Chronicles X, Project Zero and Mario Tennis. Yes, there's good third party stuff, which is nice - but Sony seriously needs to step-up its first party output. Hopefully they'll pick up the slack in 2016.
@Dodoo Both Shenmue games cost a combined $70 million to make - which at the time, made it the most expensive game ever (both were worked on simultaneously). Apparently, even if every Dreamcast owner bought them, the project still wouldn't have made a profit ๐
That was Sega for ya. Back in those days, not even money sense would stop them in their crazy, creative ambitions.
But in terms of software, I'd say its no better or worse than the others, IMO. It all depends on your personal tastes. With that said, I can't wait for Last Guardian, Rime, Shenmue 3 and WiLD.
@Slime_Rothstein If I ever met someone who didn't have internet or a smartphone, I'd be more inclined to shake their hand in awed respect. Christopher Nolan doesn't have a phone nor an email address... I guess he should slap himself then?
No-one should buy a product at launch just to 'help' a multibillion dollar company get it off the ground - they should buy it because they feel that it's worth the investment. If no-one buys it, then it's up to said multibillion dollar company to incentivise them by making it better value. If they can't afford to do so... Well, then tough. That's the business world for you.
Nice to see Sony's big Shenmue 3 reveal at E3 was nothing but smoke and mirrors (much like the non-existent development of Final Fantasy VII remake. Jesus, Tabata didn't even know he was the director).
Don't act like you're God's gift to gaming, and promise us games that aren't even finalised yet. Say what you want about Nintendo and Microsoft, but at least they aren't being shamefully lazy with hardware and software updates, whilst crowing about how good they are as basic services (like PSN) fall apart.
@Mega-Gazz You do realise that Gamer Gate has had nothing to do with those threats, right? In fact, many GGers are women (shock!) who are sick of people like Anita Sarkeesian - and corrupt sites like Polygon and Kotaku - for taking a real, serious issue like feminism and twisting it to their own, money-making desires. Of course, they have brainwashed a good number of the populace into think that Gamer Gate is made up of nothing but right-wing women haters - because they know they've been exposed as the liars they really are.
But hey, I guess I'm just a dirty misogynist for daring to speak against them, right?
On topic; talk is cheap, Peter. Sure, we have seen some diversity in lead protagonists over the years - but the vast majority are still white, gruff-voiced dudes. The industry crows on about how things need to 'evolve', yet the majority of them are too chicken to do it. Not just in terms of diversity, but in terms of innovative gameplay. It seems like a good 90% of 'triple-A' games are just clones of each other, with the same tired mechanics (guns! Regenerative health! QTEs! A cover system! Cinematic scenes!) and tropes. It's a big reason why I have zero hype for Uncharted 4 - it looks essentially like the same Uncharted from 2007, and I still feel like its existence is utterly unnecessary.
Still, I can't ignore the genuinely great, original titles that exist, like Tearaway, the Last Guardian and the intriguing Dreams. I'm so glad Sony is still giving these 'artsy' games a chance - not to mention the female hero of Horizon (but I wanna see more of the gameplay first).
So yeah, I think diversity will come naturally with original gameplay and stories - which is why you so many colourful characters on the indie scene. I remember when Jade Raymond said she wanted to make a game starring an elderly lady... I'd love to see that, but only if the game itself is creative, and not simply an obligatory vehicle for the character.
The effect PlayStation has had on the industry has been nowhere near as impactful as Nintendo.
With that said, Sony have definitely brought some neat ideas to the table over the last 20 years. Though they've frequently copied the Big N, they've also created cool stuff like EyeToy , made movie playback standard for consoles (well, most consoles), and introduced cross-buy.
@professorhat - There's some confusion as two which company was working on the motion tech first, but either way, the PS Move was a clear reaction to the Wii, as was the Kinect + Avatars. Sony even admitted as such during its unveiling.
B, b, b, but new ideas are stupid and gimmicky! Right, 'hardcore' gamers?
Fact is - innovation and 'gimmicks' are one and the same; and are integral to this industry. Whether it's NX and QOL from Nintendo, Hololens and Windows 10 from Microsoft, or Project Morpheus from Sony, the more crazy ideas, the better. Bring them on!
@hYdeks Uh huh. Sony's lost billions and has been forced to sell buildings and assets, whilst Xbox is a massive money loser for Microsoft, emphasised by their move into PC. Yet Nintendo's the one going third party...
On topic; great news for Sony - though I'd like to see how many PS4 consoles they've actually sold to consumers. Like @KratosMD has said, all this happy news hasn't solved the major problems the machine has been having; namely, a terrible online service and a lack of killer exclusive software.
I too hold a special place for Shenmue. Without a doubt, Yu Suzuki's adventures made the Dreamcast an essential purchase for me. I'd play the first game hours at a time - usually through the night. I'd often blink with surprise at the sunlight that would waft through my windows, as I wondered where the time went. Fortunately, I never encountered the game-ruining glitch - but my Dreamcast DID suffer from the dreaded random reset problem.
As such, I decided to play the sequel on Xbox. To this day, I'm amazed at how such a huge and detailed game could run on Sega's machine (and I did eventually play part 2 on another Dreamcast). To me, Shenmue's sandbox worlds are still more convincing than anything seen in GTA. The worlds had heart; each individual (non-enemy) NPC was unique, and the interactive items made everything seem so tangible.
Call me pessimistic, but I'm legit worried about Shenmue 3. A game of its scope simply cannot be made on such a shoestring budget (especially considering the $70 million cost of the first two - and that's in 1990's money), so I'm really hoping Sony will step up and offer all the resources it can. Maybe raise a bit of cash with an HD remaster of 1 & 2? Eh Sega?
Microsoft also have Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Phantom Dust and Cuphead - not to mention the awesome-looking Hololens. Even when they tried pushing Kinect as something new, people moaned about it. Hence the familiar franchises to placate their whiny gobs.
@Dohv Again, you're picking and choosing. All consoles have games that don't sell - and games that DO sell. Even Shuhei Yoshida admitted that only 30 to 40% of Playstation games make money.
@Dohv Stop with that fanboy nonsense. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo ALL create original stuff - and ALL of them rely on tried-and-true franchises. It's called good business.
Really wish people would stop buying into this false narrative of Nintendo 'screwing' Sony out if the SNES-CD deal.
Yes, Nintendo callously ditched Sony in favour of Philips (which was obviously a disastrous move), but Sony weren't exactly innocent victims. They wanted an inordinate amount of control over the software licenses, which spurred Hiroshi Yamauchi to seek a better partnership.
Basically, Nintendo was a jerk, 'cause Sony was a jerk first.
@Tasuki Are you implying that Nintendo make bad decisions? Because from what I recall, Nintendo ISN'T the company that has lost billions, sold assets, ripped-off ideas and been continuously hacked like there was no tommorow.
Reggie is in PR defense mode. ALL companies do this after a mediocre showing - Sony included. This isn't really unprecedented.
With that said, I don't think Nintendo's E3 was as bad as the whiners make it out to be. Could it have been better? Definitely, but EVERYONE has bad E3's - Sony arguably had the worst last year, and Microsoft's was a disaster in 2013... But apparently they get a free pass. I don't hear calls for THEM to go third party, or that they should exit the console business.
I said this before, and I'll say it again - people just love crapping on Nintendo because they do things differently.
I don't have a PS4 yet, so I can't complain too much. Still, there's a load of PS3 games I haven't touched, not to mention the fact that MGSV is coming out on Sony's last-gen system.
