Re: There Are More Mortal Kombat Kollector's Editions Than Decapitated Limbs

Kage_88

My brother is one of the biggest Mortal Kombat fans out there. He owns all the games, TV shows, movies and every other bit of merchandise one can possibly buy (and even some you can't).

Yet, even HE thinks these 'special' editions are overkill - rip-offs that represents the gaming industry at its worst. As such, he's told me that he will no longer buy MKX - and will simply wait for the inevitable GOTY edition.

Seriously people, do not give Netherealm/Warner Bros your money. Let them know that pulling crap like this is NOT okay.

Re: Metal Gear Rising to Serve Up a Second Dose of Revengeance on PS4?

Kage_88

@Davros79 - I agree. No matter how well-off Nintendo are financially, they really did screw-up the Wii U's marketing.

And yes, the PS brand is definitely a major money maker for Sony - which is a great thing, as it means gaming will always be a priority within the greater Sony hierarchy. As I said before, I myself will be getting a PS4 soon (along with an Xbox One) - there's just so many great games coming out this year.

Re: Metal Gear Rising to Serve Up a Second Dose of Revengeance on PS4?

Kage_88

@Davros79 - Whoa, whoa, hold on a second...

First, the GamePad is cumbersome and bulky? Okay, you're entitled to think that, if you want - but from what I've seen, you'd be in the minority. IMO, the thing is very comfy to hold - and at 500
grams, it's about the same weight as an Xbox controller.

Second; yes, the Wii U is the least popular console. But if we are going by units sold of all active consoles, then Nintendo is in fact in first place (9.2 m Wii Us + 50 m 3DSs) compared to Sony (18.5 m PS4s + roughly 7 m Vitas) and Microsoft (who haven't announced the sales numbers of the Xbox One).

Third; no, Nintendo doesn't make all those home entertainment devices. I don't see what your point is here.

Finally; PS4 is indeed ripping the Wii U "a new arsehole", as you so eloquently put it (Xbox One to a lesser extent). But Nintendo is by no means a "maggot" in the "piranha tank"; the company is in fact worth more than Sony, and the Xbox brand has lost Microsoft billions since its inception. While Sony and Microsoft are shutting down studios and selling assets, Nintendo is creating new ones and making a healthy profit. Maybe being a maggot ain't so bad, eh?

Re: Metal Gear Rising to Serve Up a Second Dose of Revengeance on PS4?

Kage_88

Sweet mother! If this is real, it'll be yet another reason why I need to get Sony's latest console!

@Davros79 - Do you even have a Wii U? I wouldn't exactly call the GamePad "garbage". Besides, the Pro Controller can be used for basically every game on the console - which is viewed as one of the best joypads ever made. The only reason Nintendo released the GCN peripheral was because the idiotic Melee 'fans' constantly hounded them about it.

Oh, and Sony is the one going broke, not Nintendo 😉

Re: Talking Point: Are Bigger Open Worlds Really Better?

Kage_88

Fantastic article, Sammy!

For me, nothing will surpass Ocarina of Time as my favourite open-world (and by 'open-word', I mean a world that is free-roaming; regardless of load times).

In regards to Playstation, I'd have to say Shadow of the Colossus was the most unforgettable open world - which is ironic, considering its vast emptiness!

Re: Try Not to Laugh at This Mortal Kombat X Trailer

Kage_88

Geez, what's with the hurt feelings?

Newsflash: Mortal Kombat IS stupid. It IS dumb. And it IS hilarious.

...But I say that in an affectionate way, like Sammy. He wasn't disrespecting the franchise - just stating the obvious. I mean, this is the same series that has babalities, friendships, and comical characters (or should I say kharacters?) like Meat, Mokap and the "Toasty!" guy.

Other games like Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur and DOA have ridiculous stuff in them too - it's basically fighting game tradition 😉

Re: Naughty Dog: We're Making Uncharted 4 a Game We Want to Play

Kage_88

Great stuff! I wish more devs were this honest. I mean, he even outright said that he made some environments SMALLER - can you imagine the reaction by deranged Naughty Dog haters right now?

"It's more proof dat ND can only do movie gaems!11!1"

Seriously, I'm really looking forward to U4.

Re: Final Fantasy XV Returns to the Road in Brand New Trailer

Kage_88

I hope Square fixes the lip-synching in the English version. IMO there's no excuse for games looking like a badly dubbed kung-fu movie these days.

Other than that, I'm super pumped for this. It really does look like Square-Enix are giving it their all for this game, and I really hope it pays off!

Re: PS4 Conditions 'Tougher' in the US Following Xbox One Price Cut

Kage_88

@Godsire- If Nintendo released the Wii U last gen, they would probably be in debt much like Sony is now.

Holding back on specs with the Wii was one of the smartest decisions the company made. People like to blab about console 'power' without actually thinking about WHY Nintendo did what it did in the first place.

The obsession with power has led to insane development budgets, and hundreds of developers and publishers have gone bust in the last decade because of it. Nintendo took a gamble with the Wii and DS by subverting the stale console market; a gamble that was simply needed. That's how they've survived for 125 years - by ignoring what everyone else is doing, in favour of upending the market with new ideas.

3rd parties don't like Nintendo's methods, because Nintendo is refusing to bow down to them. Sony and Microsoft are bending over backwards by allowing DRM, disc-locked content, unfinished games and absurd paywalls to form the basis of the 3rd parties' profit. Nintendo knows that the 'Triple A' gaming business is slowly imploding, which is why they've turned to the indies for future support.

Would I like more 3rd party games on Wii U? Sure. But to say Nintendo is arrogant and stubborn is refusing to see the wider picture. Nintendo is trying to consider its own long-term health - which is done by sticking to its guns, and not catering to the whims of short-sighted publishers that are desperately trying to avoid bankruptcy.

Re: Rumour: Mamma Mia! Sony May Be Making a Super Mario Movie

Kage_88

I liked the Mario movie... Granted, I was five when I first saw it. Blind nostalgia FTW!

As for this... Well, I can easily see this being a comedy/adventure much like Disney's recent films. However, I can't see Mario's voice endear itself well to audiences. His helium yelps are fine in small doses... But for two hours? I dunno...

Also, there is the matter of Nintendo. How would its Japanese style of storytelling gel with the 'hip' American methodology? I think a Pixar-style narrative would be a good compromise - one that has universal themes, and isn't overtly 'western' or obsessed with pop-culture.

Apparently there's a Sonic film coming, too. It's the '90s all over again!

Re: Feature: Four Reasons Why Uncharted 4: A Thief's End's PS4 Demo Blew Us Away

Kage_88

@get2sammyb Oh, thanks for the non-flaming reply 😆

Don't get me wrong - still very much want to play this game. We've only seen a fraction of it, to be fair. On a somewhat related note, I FINALLY decided to write-off The Order: 1886 - only to find out that people are apparently liking the game a lot now!

So yeah, just goes to show you can't judge a pre-release game too harshly. But if ND kill Sully, I swear...

Re: Feature: Four Reasons Why Uncharted 4: A Thief's End's PS4 Demo Blew Us Away

Kage_88

This isn't going to be a popular opinion; but what really bugged me about the demo (as good as it was) were the 'game-isms' that stood-out like a sore thumb.

The more realistic things have gotten, the more ridiculous certain things looked. Like the angular rock-faces that were conveniently colour-coded, the way Drake still climbs like a monkey without getting tired, how he absorbs bullets like a sponge, and how his grappling hook automatically winds itself after he uses it.

Sure... These complaints sound a little petty - but these discrepencies made me think that Naughty Dog is simply incapable of advancing the core gameplay in a new, intelligent way - and that they instead put all their time and effort in the presentation.

Puts up flame shield

Re: Could Drake's Big Brother Be Uncharted 4's Bad Guy?

Kage_88

Hmm, I have a feeling that he is in fact Nathan's real brother. We still know very little about his childhood, and I imagine that this will be a big theme for U4.

I'll groan very loudly if he turns out to be bad, though... I really don't want another Flynn/Dante situation.

Re: Talking Point: What Did You Think of Sony's PlayStation Experience Keynote?

Kage_88

Pretty big 'meh' from me.

It wasn't bad...But aside from Tearaway and No Man's Sky, everything looked so boring and unoriginal (gameplay-wise, I mean).

The Order really does look like crap, and I wasn't impressed with the constant stream of remakes and ports. Uncharted 4 - while looking good - felt way too safe, IMO. And don't get me started on David Jaffe - the guy always talks a big game, but he can't design an original game to save his life. A unique-looking arena shooter is still a bloody arena shooter!

It wasn't all bad though; I'm really curious about that game from Giant Sparrow, and that weird one by Mr. Katamari (loved the audience's bemused reaction). And for all my whinging about ports, I still like the fact that Resi Revelations 2 is coming to Vita.

So yeah. I still think Sony did a good job - just because I was pretty indifferent to it - doesn't mean others were. It's nice to see a happy crowd in this age of cynicism

Re: PS4 Exclusive Uncharted 4 Dazzles in Glorious Gameplay Demo

Kage_88

@JaxonH Because people say 'god' all the time? Get over it.

On topic; I thought the game looked good... But I wouldn't say it was jaw-dropping. It just felt like yet another Uncharted, with slightly shinier graphics. There really wasn't anything new or exciting about it, IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I still very much want to play it...But I just didn't see anything that couldn't be done on PS3.

Re: Reaction: The Good Intentioned Game Awards Needs a Little Tightening Up

Kage_88

Eh, I didn't watch it - but it sounded okay. Not as bad as it could've been. The Developer of the Year Award definitely deserved more fanfare, I agree with that. I can also do without the obnoxious YouTube personalities.

What REALLY got my goat, however, was that one of the judges straight up admitted that he hated Bayonetta 2; which is both incredibly unprofessional and biased to the extreme.
