The features for the PS4 sound interesting (particularly the Vita-streaming), the controller looks great, and they provided a nice mix of new IP and established franchises.
Unfortunately, I won't be getting one at launch (I only allow myself to buy Nintendo products at launch), but I'll definitely be picking one up in the future.
@Ginko - The final design may not be ready yet...or they want to save it for E3.
I tried Twisted Metal PS3...but it bored me to tears. It looked ugly, was brainless, and helped support my opinion that David Jaffe is a loud-mouthed hack.
...Still, my brother loves this series. Different strokes and all that, eh?
Killzone 2 was one of those incredibly rare moments where I hardly believed a videogame could look so good. In my view, it really helped cement the PS3 as a true powerhouse that could leave the Xbox 360 in the dust (at least, graphically).
To see something similar replecated on a handheld is truly amazing, and a sobering sign of just how far technology has come since the monocromatic days of the Game Boy.
If Guerilla confirmed the return of Hakha in Killzone: Mercenary...then I'd really be a happy camper!
I like it when games are built upon their own, custom engines (like MGS4). To me, it conveys the message that the developers spared no expense in squeezing out the best peformance possible; rather than simply relying on something like the Unreal Engine.
Unfortunately, these game are becoming increasingly rare; what with absurd development costs and such
My favourite PSN game of the year is a toss-up between Journey and Unfinished Swan.
My favourite PS3 disc game was...well...honestly, I hadn't played very many new releases. I guess I'll go with Dishonoured, but I've only just started playing it.
I'm currently playing ACIII on Wii U, and if it's anything like the PS3 version (which it is, from what I've read), it is a glitchy, cumbersome and overrated mess.
One of my issues with Capcom is how it has approached Resident Evil development.
These days, the games' construction seem to be driven by cold, emotionless market research and industry 'trends'. Capcom made the series more action-orientated because it wanted a piece of the COD pie - which led to RE6 being a confused jumble of ideas. Really, the company shouldn't be surprised by these disappointing developments. It failed to realise that gamers didn't want Resident Evil to be Call of Duty - that wanted Call of Duty to be Call of Duty...and Resident Evil to be Resident Evil.
Resident Evil 7 needs to be a start over - like Resident Evil 4. In addition, it needs to move on from the same characters and the same Umbrella-centric storylines. It needs to be boldly innovative, or the series will be demolished by superior horror experiences such as DayZ, Dead Space, or even ZombiU.
Sony has a lot of games that could be included in some form in the sequel, such as ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Last Guardian, The Last of Us, Siren, Journey, Escape Plan, Unfinished Swan, Puppeteer, Tearaway & Rain...whether it would be playable characters or levels. There are some 3rd party choices that would be suitable too, including Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Klonoa, Soul Sacrifice, Assassin's Creed & Resident Evil series that are (or were) strongly associated with the Playstation brand.
Some characters I think would be good would be Lara Croft, Cloud Strife, Sephiroth, Klonoa, Tombi, Joseph Capelli, Kutaro (from Puppeteer), Iota (from Tearaway)...and yes, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro.
Normally, I would slam a developer for adding tacked-on mulitplayer...but Naugty Dog are great developers, so I won't stress about it too much.
As long as it doesn't detract from the single-player game, it's all good. I love the Uncharted games, but I've never touched the multi-player - which has thankfully not affected my experience with the series at all. Compare them to something like Halo; where it feels as though you're only getting half the game if you're only in it for the story campaign (which I was - Halo 4 in particular was really cruddy in this regard).
The first Mass Effect is still the only one I've played (on 360, of course). I will definitely consider picking this trilogy up. However, I heard that there may be a Wii U version...and GamePad-only play would be really awesome.
Cannot wait for Last of Us...especially considering its arrival is so close to my birthday.
I'm definitely excited for Orbis and Durango...but I probably won't buy them at launch until they go down in price and gain respectable libraries.
In the mean time, there are still a buttload of games I've still got to play on the PS3, X360, Vita and 3DS (not to mention the Wii U). I still even have a quite a few unplayed Wii games that have sat on my shelf for the last 3 years!
I admit that I was hard on the game when it was initialy (officially) revealed. I called it a Smash Bros. rip-off, and yet another example of Sony's 'me too' mentality.
After buying the game, and playing it - I stand by those statements. People who refer to Powerstone or Dream-Mix TV Fighters as PROOF that Nintendo did not 'invent' the mascot mash-up genre have missed the point entirely. PSASBR is not a rip-off because Smash Bros. was the first game of its kind - but because it was clearly designed by Sony as a reaction to Nintendo's series.
This was made all the clearer to me as I played through the title; little things like an unbalanced roster, a flawed fighting system, and an alarming lack of unlockables - these all point to a developer and publisher wanting to emulate the Smash Bros. experience, but simply not understanding how to craft it. Also, what the hell did Seth Kilian even do?
Now, with all that said - I still enjoyed the game to an extent. The choice of characters are great; and the super moves are wonderful visually. In addittion, the fighters feel GOOD to control - which is definitely an important accomplishment. I look forward to the game's slim pickings being bolstered by future DLC.
Maybe now that Superbot have laid the foundations, they can create an Orbis sequel stuffed with extras...
Any way you slice it, Playstation All-Stars IS a rip-off of Smash Bros.
Just the latest in a long line of 'me too' moves by Sony.
HOWEVER, that's not to say it can't be a good game. Also, get2sammyb makes some good points. Not every character in Smash Bros, is a 'household name; the reason why the roster is so appealing is because it's a mixture of both the well-known and the obscure; something that also seems to be evident in All-Stars. Also, Sony has a prime opportunity to illustrate just how successful a game such as this can be in the online space (not to mention the cross-platform play with the Vita version).
And to be honest, I'm not the biggest Xbox fan in the world. Aside from Halo, I cannot think of any M$-exclusive games I'm interested in. In addition, the whole 'Red Ring of Death' debacle - along with being forced to pay a monthly fee for online gaming - has really soured me on the entire brand. Doing despicable things such as nabbing exclusive rights to DLC (for games such as CoD and Skyrim) also isn't something they should be boasting about, either.
First - Yes, it's true that the Wii Remote wasn't a new technological creaton of Nintendo's (in fact, they operate their business on making new uses of off-the shelf tech), but the PS Move was definitely a reaction to the Wii - Sony themselves even admitted as much.
Second - How is Nintendo Land in any way like Playstation Home? The former is a quasi-minigame collection, the latter is an online space for PS3 users. Or, do you mean Miiverse? If that's the case, then a) there is still very little known about Nintendo's online community, and b) Miiverse looks NOTHING like PS Home.
Third - The Pro Controller is a rip-off of Xbox 360? Like how the Xbox controller is a rip-off of the Dual Shock, which in turn is a rip-off of the SNES controller? Nintendo created the D-Pad, Shoulder Buttons, AND the 'diamond' button layout - Sony and M$ are damn lucky that Nintendo don't ask for royalties. Oh, and by most accounts that I've read, the Wii U Pro Controller is in fact very comfortable.
@Gamer83 - I disagree. All three companies have done a great job of catering to the 'core' this gen. There have been a ton of great titles for all consoles, but most 'hardcore' gamers simply refuse to see the forest because of all those darn trees; Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft have ALL made concerted efforts to reel in the 'casual' gamers, which bunched everyone's panties in a wad.
@get2sammyb - You said that "Sony consistently publishes high-quality first-party content. Significantly more than the other console manufacturers anyway." Did you mean that Sony has published a higher percentage of critcally aclaimed titles? Or did you mean they simply published the most titles?
I'm not trying to start anything...I was just under the impression that the the Wii had the most 1st party published titles?
Y'know, there's one thing that's always bugged me about the protagonists of Assassin's Creed. I mean, they can climb monolithic structures and run across rooftops with the greatest of ease...but they never get fatigued!
It's one of my pet-peeves with videogame action heroes; they never seem to pant, or get tired, or make mistakes, or have their strength give-out on them. Now granted, such things would interfere with gameplay...but, I always feel disconnected when guys like Nathan Drake or Ezio are able to leap around like Spiderman without any physical reprocussions. How about (in the next games), giving them a 'stamina' meter, like something from Skyward Sword or I Am Alive? It's just my opinion, but such a feature could really up the tension for the player... just imagine having your character become weary on a cliff face, so you need to find a small crevice in order to catch a breath (like something Bear Grylls would do).
@Splat - Now, I don't mean to play the role of Bethesda-hating fanboy...but I'm really happy with your decision, mate. At the risk of sounding meladromatic, the stunt they've pulled with Skyrim is criminal, in my eyes. Why should gamers accept such behaviour from a multi-billion dollar publisher like ZeniMax (who own Bethesda)? I mean, the game is STILL unplayable on my PS3...but what about the poor people that (for some reason or another) can't go online and download patches? Is it too much to ask for us to pay for a game, and have it - y'know - work?
Still, it's not as if this is all unprecedented - most of Bethesda's games have been glitchy messes. I still can't fathom how gamers STILL put up with such garbage...unfinished games that require innumerable patches, on-disc DLC, punishment for buying pre-owned, online-only multiplayer...
They have flat-out admitted that they knew of Skyrim's PS3 problems during the game's production, but they didn't bother to fix it. They said it was only a "small percentage" of machines; as if that justified their actions. PS3 owners were screwed over - plain and simple.
Skyrim itself is also a farce. The glitches the game posesses are simply non-acceptable - and no amount of patches can change that fact (literally - they keep adding MORE glitches!). The fact that it was praised so much whilst recieving so many awards baffles me to no end. I suppose people just like broken games.
Bethesda - you can suck it. I'm through with your glitched, crappy games and your disgusting business practices.
I love the MGS series, and I can't wait for this (haters be damned!).
I agree turtlelink, this game is begging for Move support. Skyward Sword showed how awesome motion controls can be for sword-play, and I'm sure Platinum is aware of this too.
Also, I wonder if the story will hint at Snake's current wherabouts/condition...
I don't hate the Desmond bits as much as some people, but I'm not his biggest fan, either.
Also, I agree with Hutchinson regarding the narrative-bloat. Every AC plot has so many incidental little details (not to mention all the multi-media spin offs...)...that by the time the next title arrives, I've completely forgotten about them. Still, at least it's easy to remember that Assassins = good, and Templars = bad
...but I wouldn't be surprised if Versus was in fact canned. Well, either that, or Square-Enix have reworked it into FF XV with their new, next-gen engine.

Pretty good showing by Sony!

Actually, when RE: Revelations was first released, I thought it would inevitabley arrive on the PS Vita.
Pretty strange it's not, considering it's coming to every other format under the sun. I guess it's simply because of the Vita's struggling sales.
Oh well. At least it'll be on PS3.
