Re: Yakuza Dev Gearing Up for Big Stranger Than Heaven Re-Reveal

Gaia093

After Yakuza 0, Judgment and (to a lesser extent) Lost Judgment are my favorite RgG stories. I'd even throw Ishin in there as well.

I'm hoping Stranger than Heaven will be yet another side project that breaks away from the narrative trappings of the main series. I always enjoy those mainline games overall, but none have come close to repeating the electrifying magic I felt while experiencing Y0 - their spin-offs, however, do.

On top of potentially more narrative freedom, StH also brings a whole new setting/era and combat style. It could do wonders to revitalize the RgG universe when it's needing it the most.

Re: Crimson Desert's Mixed Reviews See Dev's Share Price Drop Almost 30%

Gaia093

It'll go back up after they see the sales and (most likely) the players' reception.

Games media has had it out for this game from Day 1, reviews were always going to be middling no matter what the game offers. Ultimately it'll be the average gaming fan who decides whether it's a success. Looking forward to trying it out myself.

Re: Crimson Desert's Mandatory PS5 Update Sparks Debate About Games Which Break Street Date

Gaia093

I hardly ever get spoiled on games due to people getting early copies and posting about it online, courtesy of barely touching anything that counts as social media.

I know many people do get spoiled, though, so I see the point. I also get the opposite argument from the game preservation angle. Basically, this is the right move for the best launch possible here and now but a bad move in the very long term. Your mileage may vary on which matters more.

Re: 'Imagine Being Such a Loser': We've Hit Rock Bottom with Website Dedicated to 'Failing' Games

Gaia093

I agree the site is redundant as it doesn't provide any new information. I disagree with calling people "game anti-fans" just because they want specific videogames to fail.

The immense majority of people with this attitude simply want more games they like being made and less games they don't. There are more reasonable and more stupidly vitriolic ways to express that, but at the end of the day only a spare few have stopped enjoying games altogether and just feed on misery.

I think acknowledging the reality that many gamers are fed up with current industry trends (especially live service garbage) is more productive than adding to the mindless online discourse by classifying them all as "unemployed anti-fans" or whatever. That dismissive attitude is how duds keep getting made, mind.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 621

Gaia093

Yakuza Kiwami 3, mostly. I just completed the full Training List for the main game and I'm close to finishing the story too. Not sure how long it will take to do everything in Dark Ties, but hopefully I should be able to wrap up the game before the weekend ends.

If I've got leftover time after finishing Yakuza, I'll probably start Death Match Love Comedy, which arrived in the mail a couple days ago. It's from the writer of Raging Loop (one of my all-time favorite VNs) so I'm pretty excited.

Re: Opinion: The Euphoric Reaction to PS6's Rumoured Delay Really Confuses Me

Gaia093

"Maybe I’m increasingly out of touch"

Yes.

Tech improvements show clear diminishing returns and most people are not thrilled to shell out probably close to 1k (if not more) on a new system that is barely an upgrade just to play the latest games, and merely a few years after the previous system.

Not to mention that with how long dev cycles are getting the damn thing would probably launch with close to no games and have frequent droughts of first party content.

Re: Don't Expect Crimson Desert to Be Easy, PS5 Open Worlder Won't Have Difficulty Options at Launch

Gaia093

Sounds good to me.

When talking games I kind of hate the step of having to contextualize which difficulty everyone in the conversation is playing on, often makes people's experiences incompatible and the discussion boring. Talk about games like e.g. Souls continues for years partly because everyone faces the exact same challenges and it's the players' approaches that wildly differ.

Since Crimson Desert has a big focus on combat, this will help keep its community engaged with its systems.

Re: Saros Shaves Off Returnal's Rough Edges for a More Universally Appealing PS5 Roguelite

Gaia093

While I enjoyed Returnal, personally my main gripe with it was that most of the upgrades felt like they sucked. If you didn't happen to get one of the handful of solid power-ups during your run, it quickly devolved into a situation where you couldn't build towards anything fun.

Interesting synergies between your pickups are the lifeblood of roguelikes/roguelites. While these permanent upgrades in Saros will help the game, I really hope this time they'll work on making the temporary upgrades more entertaining.

Re: Here's Your Chance to Tell Sony What You Think of Horizon Hunters Gathering

Gaia093

I participated just to add my drop to the ocean of people telling them that the cartoonish Fortnite-esque artstyle is a massive turn-off for most people who aren't into Fortnite, and that those who are into Fortnite are just going to keep playing that.

There's no saving this game's visuals now that it's so far along in development obviously, but maybe if enough people tell them, they won't add yet another one of these to the pipeline in the future? Maybe, just maybe, a future MP spin-off of a PlayStation IP might actually respect its mainline visual identity?

Re: Mini Review: Dark Auction (PS5) - Compelling Visual Novel Makes Some Generative AI Missteps

Gaia093

I'm halfway through Chapter 6. Generally don't mind it but I'm not exactly having a blast either.

The auctions lack excitement and emotional weight, the twists are very telegraphed (with weak delivery too) and the characters, while generally okay, could be a lot better. I also feel like they didn't get too much mileage out of the Hitler-related setting, and the handling of it often feels rather gimmicky.

I'll reserve final judgment until I'm all done, but it's feeling like a 5.5 to me at the moment.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 619

Gaia093

Just got 100% on Wo Long. Solid stuff, not as enjoyable nor difficult as the Nioh games but still a good time. Some of the third DLC's bosses were quite the challenge.

Yakuza Kiwami 3 is coming out soon so I don't want to start any other long games now, so I might go back to Balatro for a bit (still need to get all golden stickers).

Oh, and I'll try the Nioh 3 demo.

Re: Larian CEO Swen Vincke Sticks His Foot in It Again, Thinks Game Reviewers Should Also Be Reviewed

Gaia093

I don't exactly hate the idea and sites for other media already do it anyway. Devs' feelings aside, giving trash reviews less visibility helps other users.

If someone on IMDB posts a garbage review, most people are gonna choose the option to say that their review was not helpful. Exact same thing could be done with people on Metacritic and whatnot who are e.g. mindlessly hating on stuff they clearly haven't even played. Even if their "criticism" isn't removed, it can be made less visible.

Probably not a popular idea for a site which chose to hide downvotes, though. 😉
