they cannot do the same thing they have been doing — increasing the graphics power and providing the high-end experiences
Wanna bet?
That's exactly what the PS6 console will be, a beefed up PS5 Pro. They didn't quite completely explore/took advantage of all of PS5's innovations (PSSR is a hit/miss even 1 year later, dualsense is still not fully used in every game etc etc), they'll certainly extend it's life into the next gen.
Maybe/hopefully they'll bring something revolutionary with PS7 in the 2030's.
Seems like a remedy for the symptom, not the cause.
More power efficient hardware, and smart software optimizations - those are the best ways to be energy-conscious, not simply clogging games to save power.
I very much doubt any improvement of note will be done to the Dualsense prior to PS6 launch, when they will either release Dualsense 2, or make an improvement to the existing DS.
Whatever the case, IF it will be done (and that's an IF of epic proportions) I bet it will as part of the new gen... Sony moves VERY slow when it comes to such changes.
Oh hell no, they should give it a rest with the mobile adaptations, they'll have the exact same fate as the myriad of GAAS unicorns they're relentlessly (and unsuccessfully) chasing.
I have zero issues with them if they do it as a side project, but if this financially impacts the AAA SP 1st party titles like the GAAS investments did in the last few years, then we have a huge problem...
@Coversnail Nice blast from the past avatar, haven't seen that little egg in a long time. Had quite the Dizzy games collection growing up, great titles in their time.
The magic of PS AAA SP exclusives a lot of us buy our consoles for. Too bad Sony ignored them lately, there should have been more in PS5's life cycle by now...
So it's not a refusal from SP, it's a Sony imposed limitation (because money allocated per 1st party studio most likely).
Of course Sony could revive those IP's if they really wanted to, but they care about Infamous about as much as they do about Bloodborne... best to cool them expectations to about -273°C
9/10 - won't break any records or even be GOTY, but it's an excellent game! And very much overdue for the PS5's life span...
A suggestion for Sucker Punch though: for the next Ghost Of title - stop playing it safe! You've proven you're capable of great levels of innovation with Tsushima, don't be afraid to do it again.
Thanks for the good work that was put into this list!
A few highlights
October brings Painkiller and the Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection for me, and Yooka for my son.
For 2026... Resident Evil Requiem first in line.
Then Crimson Desert (finally, can't wait!) 007 First Light - if it's as good as the trailers show. Lords of the Fallen 2
And Wolverine, of course, if it releases.
@Oram77 Of course it can be successful without combat, there are quite a few other titles in the survival horror genre going strong without it, PT included. It's just not for me.
Also, PT was short teaser, the lack of combat doesn't necessarily mean the eventual game wouldn't have had it.
Alas, here's hoping the next AAA SH title will have it too.
Silent Hill: Townfall itself is said to be an atmospheric adventure game without combat.
Pft... lost me right there, running and hiding like a scared little mouse instead of picking up a stick or smth and bonking monstrosities with it is not my cup of coffee. Not asking for guns or explosives, but no combat at all is a turn off for me.
Silent Hill 2 has the best balance between fighting back and feeling powerless... It's still the best game in the series, not even Silent Hill f surpasses it.
Btw, they screwed Silent Hill f from the start by implying it's all a bad case of psychosis, all in the protagonists head and not her actual reality... Something that didn't happen in SH2 or 3 for example, where they throw you in and let you figure it out. Didn't play more than 3h for now, so maybe it will get better later on, but this scenario was a big turn off from the start, with heavy impact on the overall scare factor... I hope the do better next time.
At launch I get less than 4 or 5 games a year - maybe - very much depending on the titles. This year I got Ghost of Yotei at launch, and that's it, and it's October already.
For the rest of them I keep an eye out for promotions, discount periods, CD Key sites (on which the prices mainly go down constantly over time), etc. Having both a PS5 and a PC helps a lot with the number of available discount opportunities.
Even make proper use of some services if needed, like getting 1 month of Ubisoft+ to play AC Shadows at launch, that being 18$ instead of 70$ or whatever it's base price was.
Or using one of those smart methods to get more Game Pass for less money (last year I got 19 months of it for about 100$, and still have it 'till June 2026... and until now I've had day one access to Indiana Jones, Doom The Dark Ages, Atomfall, Hollow Knight Silksong, Oblivion Remastered, STALKER 2 Hellblade II etc.). Of course PS+ also brings access to games, but most of Sony's 1st party titles I've already bought over the years, and the 3rd party titles are available faster (and a lot of times cheaper) on PC.
Huh, can't believe it's been 8 years since the last Uncharted game launched, how time flies away...
Also, the PS5 gen is actually gonna lack a new Uncharted game, main or spinoff.
Hopefully the IP will have a new entry on PS6 - would be a real shame to let it fade away.
Excellent game. There's a lot more stuff in the game that i haven't heard about in any of the reviews, and I've watched a few (most likely because of spoilers). The first couple of hours may be a little slow, but then, the more hours you spend in it, the more you want to play. So, to those on the fence: take it, actually play it, there's a lot more depth to it below the surface. At the end of the day, if a game manages to make you want to return, it's a worthy investment.
They've dropped the ball a bit with Ghost of Yotei's story, a gathering of people hurting/killing your family and you hunting them down over the course of the game... been told and retold before (AC Odyssey? AC Shadows? others...)
But for the rest of the 1st party games, story-wise, I don't see a problem with any of them...
Frankly if the GoY story chose a different path, the article wouldn't have existed imo.
Subtle or not, there's enough diversity in the older 1st party titles stories that it doesn't justify generalizing.
@StitchJones
Heh... we're talking video games here bub... watching a scenario from the past, actually traveling through time etc etc. Doesn't even have to be part of the Horizon world, an easter egg or a fun side content/quest to give nod to a fellow PS studio/IP is quite ok.
Anything is possible with the right quantity of imagination.
Guerrilla Games has contributed a piece with Atsu enjoying a cosy campfire with Horizon's Aloy
Colab in the future? Make Aloy travel to Japan in Horizon 3 as part of the main story, and include Atsu in some form or other - maybe to teach Aloy an "ancient skill" - would be really cool.
Loved the OG games, especially the first, but they didn't age too well. A simple Remaster won't be sufficient to justify the costs and make a profit from it, and will certainly encounter backlash.
Remake or Reboot - best way to go if they want to revive this IP.
Otherwise just let it RIP.
@Dyn_Arall The physical standard edition contains the blu ray disk - as stated on https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/games/ghost-of-yotei/
The Collectors edition doesn't contain the blu ray disk - only a digital code (from the same site - be sure to click the Digital/Physical switches to see all the versions).
Cool, that's how you make proper marketing for a top IP !
As opposed to that unremarkable DS gamepad they plan to release for the GoW 20 years celeb...
Not for me, I'd rather play the actual AAA exclusive games they're based on.
Wake me up when they actually decide to stop the milking and restart creating the type of games that made Playstation successful...
Neah, too much blood splashing and not much else.
Wolverine is explicit, visual, precise in it's visceral action.
This one is a mixted up mess... the added light flashes, energies and damage numbers take up too much screen space, at times covering quite a lot of the action itself. Also the contrast and color choices for enemies and environment need some work...
A little rough around the edges in some areas, but if this is pre-alpha, it has potential.... could be a 7-8 rating game in the end if they play their cards right.
Very disappointing this is. God Of War is supposed to be a "crown-jewel" IP - and this is the best they can do, squish a red stripe on a regular controller and call it "limited edition" ??
I mean take for example the Gamesir G7 Pro Wuchang Fallen Feathers edition - that's how a "game-specific" custom gamepad is done properly!
TMR sticks, HE triggers, microswitch buttons and d-pad, 4 extra mappable buttons, removable faceplate, included charging stand, braided custom USB-C cable and 2 extra d-pad caps. And the fabulous overall design on the gamepad, stand and the cable!... And all that for 100$, about the same as a custom DS these days...
Take a look Sony, and a sh...ton of notes!
Great!
And on the same "what are the PS studios cooking these days" subject, what about Bluepoint... not even a peep after the live service title they were working on got canned. Since they (hopefully) didn't get disbanded, maybe they've got something in the works.
Ghost of Yotei is 250$, and doesn't offer the game on disk, because Sony... 30$ more doesn't seem that far off. You can be certain it will sell very well.
With a ~20% slice dedicated to Saros, they're not gonna present anything else that could overshadow it... best to go easy on God of War, Wolverine and other high tier expectations.
@graymamba It's the remake of a title released initially in 2004 on PC, as a darker alternative to Serious Sam, an IP that enjoyed quite some hype back then - so no 3rd person here (even though SSam had the option, People Can Fly didn't include one in PK).

Sarcasm aside, I know that Saros is included but roguelikes are simply not for me... Give me Wolverine news, God Of War news, hell even a new trailer for Yotei would be awesome, that would make the show worth watching.

Still going through Ghost of Yotei, 50+ hours in and still loving it.
Approaching the end (sadly) but in time for Painkiller's launch next week.
Also helping my son with some harder areas in Yooka Replaylee (gifted it to him yesterday for his name day).
Have a fun weekend everyone!
