When Yooka-Laylee was released in 2017, it was a fine game. Many came in extremely excited for it but were largely let down overall; it turned out to be pretty middling at best.
With that said, Yooka-Replaylee brings in a second draft that improves on almost everything. This isn’t a mere remaster — this is a revitalization that takes a largely forgettable original adventure and turns it into something memorable.
So much has been tweaked in Yooka-Replaylee to make this a more enjoyable game. For starters, worlds no longer need to have their expansions unlocked. In some ways, there is enjoyment to be had in unlocking things in games, but not having to jump out of a world to access a new corner of it is a significant improvement here.
Abilities are also fully unlocked from the beginning and allow you to explore every corner of the maps freely, right off the bat. They’ve also been updated to feel much better as you run around the place. For example, the Reptile Roll no longer is tied to the stamina bar, and the Tail Twirl can be spammed for a long tornado spin that decimates enemies.
Across the board, everything just feels much smoother, which includes the camera controls.
Focusing back on the maps, in some ways, the collect-a-thon process in Yooka-Replaylee feels very inspired by Super Mario Odyssey, with colored quills being exclusive to the world they’re found in and coins being all over the place.
Pagies are also littered everywhere as the main collectible, and now Yooka and Laylee do a little dance when you find them, injecting more charm that 3D platformer fans from the '90s will love. Your first time going through these locations, you will find rewards no matter where you go.
Outside of a few challenges that actually managed to soft lock our progress and force us to reboot the game, and boss fights that can feel a little overextended with how much you have to wait to attack, gameplay feels considered and well balanced across the board.
In short, Yooka-Replaylee is a brilliant remake of the original game. It expands and improves upon so many areas that it leaves the original release in the dust. It took a long wait, but Yooka and Laylee finally have a 3D platformer worthy of the Banjo-Kazooie comparisons.

The 90's era for 3D platforming will always be the GOAT. I'm happy the game got a good score, but at £45 I think I will have to hold off on it for now.
It's not bad.
It's not that great either, mind.
I'm curious what performance is like, because all the previews I've seen for this have been quite erratic with dropped frames
Is there an upgrade path available for people like me who owns the original please?
Same question as above here. I own the original on disc and hope there's a significant discount for an upgrade to this version. Otherwise I'll skip for now.
Impossible Lair was really good though, apart from the impossible Impossible Lair!
Better late than never. It took its time, but Yooka Laylee finally got there, and I think Replaylee will go down as a remake that took a flawed game, and chiselled down those edges to end up with the game the original was always trying to be.
@LeeBB_Art What I've read is that owners of the original do get a 25% discount, but I don't know whether that also includes owners of physical copies.
Has there been any improvements to voice acting. That was so terrible in the original.
I'm not sure i like the idea of no progression. Platformers in the 90s have always been about earning new abilities and opening up new areas. I say this as someone who finished the first game and almost came close to platinum
Will get this but i shell wait for a sale, i expect by Xmas it will be part of the big Xmas sale so i shell pick it up then.
@Oram77 I've a terrible weakness for platformers. Even the most simplistic ones have a charm I find hard to resist.
The Switch 2 version only does 30fps per the review on Nintendo Life. Does this version aim for/hit 60? I would HOPE so, but these days that’s just not guaranteed.
I backed the original on Kickstarter, and played for about an hour. It was horrible garbage. Glad they've fixed it up, but won't be buying again.
I'm excited to play the game again. I played the original way back and while it did have it's issues, I still enjoyed it.
@hypnotoad An 8/10 is literally "Great" according to their scale 🤷
@TheFakulty I'm also curious if the characters have been made less annoying, especially with the "90s attitude" in the writing. It was just... a LOT.
@HamKnight I played the demo and didn’t notice smithing FWIW.
If everything is unlocked, what do you spend currency on?
@FatalBubbles That's good to know, thanks!
I really hope this sells well. We need more games that are as charming as banjo and yooka. Their style is impeccable.
Like the original, ill get the physical, digital and maybe the switch2 version for my wife!
@TheFakulty what improvement to voice acting do you expect in a game where theres no real spoken words?
@Cry_Zero that's my exact point. It's all written with stupid nonsensical sounds. Get the characters to speak the words on the screen or say nothing at all. I mean they could easily get ai to put speech in.
@Oram77 The digital version is a lot cheaper ($30/£25/29€) and you also get a 30% discount if you own the original.
@KoopaTheGamer Ah that's cool, ok thanks for you heads up!
@TheFakulty I hear you, but it's worth noting that the game that this is a spiritual successor to (Banjo-Kazooie) is widely remembered for its silly gibberish voice acting. I'd prefer that myself, but understand that it can be grating for others.
I backed the original as I was a huge Rare fan during the N64 and early Xbox days. £15 is a good deal will pick it up.
@ShaiHulud Thank you
I'll give it another go when it goes on sale. No idea if I'll feel driven to finish this version either so I'll wait.
Great! Will get this for my son's name day next week, he'll be thrilled!
I bought the first one and couldn't play it. 30 FPS is just horrible for a platformer. I will wait for a sale for the remake. Don't want to pay the full price.
@ShaiHulud
Unfortunately it does not.
However, Ps Plus members get 5% off if they do not own the digital version of the first.
@Chrisathickson
Yeah so I've noticed.. Still, £22 is still incredible good value with a game this good!
I got the Platinum for the first game, thought it was brilliant, didn't understand the hate to be honest. As someone that grew up completing Banjo Kazooie over and over again it was like having a bunch of Member Berries.
Just got the remaster last night, love it just as much and now there's even more to do! Happy days. My one criticism would be I wish they hadn't changed the fonts from the classic BK style.
