Ghost of Yotei Is Sony's Biggest PS5 Launch Since Spider-Man 2 in Europe

Between Spidey 2 in October 2023 and GoY now, there was with Astro Bot (Sep 2024) only one major single-player release from PlayStation Studios (remasters, remakes, yearly MLB, Lego Horizon aside). You don’t have to be a cynic to see why it took so long for SIE to reach high initial sales numbers again.

But it's not selling similar figures to GoT which managed around 2.4 million in 4 days or something daft like that..GoY hasn't even reached 2 million units sold yet and from what I'm reading around the tinterweb it's sales figures are something like 40% down..don't ask me for direct links as it will take all day to link every single article but anybody can look this up themselves. Have Sony released a 1st party game since spiderman 2? They are so rare I may have missed one. If not its hardly an achievement is it?

@Northern_munkey I say Yotei achievement is still quite impressive and considering it has similar budget to Tsushima, big chance Sony & SP already made their budget back + profits in the same week.

@Northern_munkey Assuming your figures are corect, Tsushima released about half a year after the start of COVID lockdowns in the West, that's a factor that can't be ignored.

I don’t think this game has sold gangbusters, but given the fact it was made on a similar budget to Tsushima, it will still do more than well enough to be a success for Sony.

I’m loving Yotei so far, even if I’m slightly disappointed that (if I’m remembering correctly) only 1 of the big PS5 first party exclusives released so far is of a new IP (2/3 if we count Concord and Destruction All Stars lmao)

I’m 43 hours in and the popularity doesn’t surprise me. Ghost is a fast moving, beautiful game whose world is a joy to explore due to its beauty and its design and whose brutal combat system boasts a lot of depth (playing on hard I’ve had many opportunities to see fights play out differently depending on how one tries to tackle them 😅).

Given all the commercially successful single player games we’ve seen recently (including but not limited to Silent Hill F, Silksong and Cronos:The New Dawn) it’s not a surprise Ghost of Yotei (which improves across the board on its very popular predecessor) has joined their ranks.

Last of all, as I tend to note in sales threads fans people who genuinely enjoy something and want to see more of it should focus on absolute rather than relative performance.

I see the haters are out again. What is it about Sony that triggers them so bad.....

Is it so hard to say well done to Sucker Punch and Yotei, but no people have to try and play it down and make a narrative that goes against the article, and it's constant

The magic of PS AAA SP exclusives a lot of us buy our consoles for.
Too bad Sony ignored them lately, there should have been more in PS5's life cycle by now...

This game is sublime! I liked Tsushima alot but once I got the end I was glad as it started to become repetitive and out stay it's welcome. I did get Tsushima a 2nd time when i got my PS5 but after a few hours id had enough.I'm finding Yotei to hold my attention far more than Tsushima did. Its world is far more seamless and engaging in design and it reminds me alot of RDR2 where you can be heading for an objective only got be taken off the path 3 or 4 times due to discoveries as I head to my destination. The missions are engaging and the bounties and combat are fun. The only thing that I'm conflicted about are that I'd like to play on hard but some of those boss/bounty/1 on 1 battles are damn bloody hard. Tekezo the unrivalled, I'm looking at you!! Playing on base PS5 and the game still looks stunning. As someone with a short attention span, Yotei is my GOTY by a long shot..

@Ainu20 Tsushima also $10 cheaper than Yotei and back in 2020 PS4 has larger install base than PS5.

The less than 2m number is also just a random rumour that people are running with, as some people are desperate to make this game sell less than GoT, as if their entire worldview depends upon it.

@Max_the_German Since Spider-man 2, Sony has released Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Astro Bot, Death Stranding 2 etc.

@Kidfunkadelic83 it reminds me more of RDR1 (a compliment) in that it all feels like a successful mix of gamey and immersive/cinematic. I feel RDR2 leaned too hard into immersion and sometimes it came at the cost of actual gameplay.

@Northern_munkey context is everything when discussing physical sales from 2020 to physical sales in 2025. As it will be again when comparing physical sales from 2025 to 2030. Simply reading 40% down doesn’t even tell a half of the story.

Sucker punch have done a superb job with this series so kudos to them. As much as I like these games I hope they don’t become a “ghost” studio now pumping out game after game like so often happens. Their next game being something different would be nice.

Its an excellent game. Enjoying every minute. 20 hours in and not faced the Oni yet.

Looking forward to exploring more of its world as it opens up. Might be false memory but the environments dont seem quite as exciting as those in Tsushima yet - although everything within the world has been a lot of fun to participate in and discover.

I wasn't a fan of GoT - it just didn't click with me, including the story - and I was on the fence about buying GoY until reviews persuaded me to buy it.
And im very glad I did - its excellent, and the further I get into it, the more enjoyable it is.

A very well made game too - the devs have done an excellent job.

@Titntin I have already got platinum for the game and I agree with what Liam said in his review and this is Sucker Punch's best game to date. But while I was playing the game and I wasn't thinking "I hope this game sells well" I get what you are saying, but we should be looking at the present not thinking of a future game already and not arguing about sales figures which quite frankly doesn't effect us in the overall picture.

I’m looking forward to playing the game in a couple of years when I can pick it up for £20. I do not see enough difference from the first game to pay the current asking price.

I, for one, am very much enjoying the game. It's probably my second favourite game of the year after Cronos: The New Dawn.

I really hope we see a third entry in the franchise because it thoroughly deserves it...

@Titntin How have we gone from agreeing with each other to this 😭I was literally defending yotei from people down playing it's success, remember? maybe I was poor in my explanation, all I was trying to say people are TOO hung up on numbers rather then playing said game and giving it's merits that way.

Edit: a game can be a success and still have the studio closed AKA Hi-fi rush and Tango gameworks.

For me the lack of comemorative post telling us it reached a sales milestone tells me a better a story than any sales data.

GoY sold, but maybe it didn't sold as much or as fast as they were expecting.

Just so everybody is in the clear here I am not knocking GoY as its a superb game even though my personal opinion on certain things means I'm not buying it. I hope everybody is enjoying it and I hope those who have not played it yet enjoy it when they do. I'll try and keep my opinions and thoughts to myself in future 👍

I’m more fascinated by the other titles in the lists. I knew Yotei was going to be successful, even having not played it myself yet. The crazy thing is South Park charting. Even with a steep sale price it’s amazing that charted since the game is from 2017, way back in the middle of the last console generation. I’m not as surprised at RDR2 and Hogwarts, which although are also older games, are more evergreen titles. Even Far Cry makes a little sense. But kudos to South Park 😅

The second list of revenue is really the more important one though, as selling a ton of copies at a steep discount adds less to the bottom line as selling fewer copies at full retail. In that list AC Shadows is the big surprise. A rising tide lifts all ships maybe? I wonder if Yotei helped Shadows sell since people are often comparing the two.

@Northern_munkey always bring opinions to the table, it’s only discussion that helps people gain further understanding… on both sides of a debate. I think the issue here is that you were claiming a 40% reduction in sales… but that was only part of it, so people provided further context (ie the 40% in question was referring to uk physical sales… which have dropped considerably in the intervening years between 2020 and 2025). When people provided further context, you used the opinion-defense, which doesn’t really apply to constructing a point while only using partial facts.

I’ve been waiting to see official sales data to put the naysayers to rest. I bought a physical copy because I like to have a collection of certain games. But I know the digital sales are obviously more nowadays. So having official sales figures would be nice to see.
The game is phenomenal, even if I may like Ghost of Tsushima story better and choosing alternate endings. I enjoyed Ghost of Yotei. It was a breath of fresh air. I enjoyed the story that was bent on revenge then at the end you realize she could start to see past her vengeance.

But also SpiderMan 3 was roughly $315 million.. Ghost of Tsushima was $60 million. So I see Ghost of Yotei I think is around $70 million. That is a feat compared to most triple A titles.

Can't believe that 40% less is still trying to be peddled. It was 40% less physical. When there is a 30% less install base today. 5 years on when a digital console didnt exist and far more people buy digital now. That was an incredible result for physical gaming. Plus the literal facts that even with the less install base it's not sold any less than GOT. Fantastic result for the studio

If a game doesn't sell, you won't see any further releases in the series. High production costs and thin margins from middling sales make investing unattractive.

This can affect specific games, or even entire genres.

It's the same with Netflix. People get angry when they watch a series they enjoy and it gets cancelled. That's understandable for them to feel angry, but unfortunately not enough people watched it to justify the production costs of further output.

Doesn't matter how artistic or well produced something is. It can be great art but will go extinct if it doesn't pay the bills, where as slop like Transformers or Fast and Furious that put bums on seats will persist.

So no matter how much critical acclaim Yotei receives, it has to shift copies. Anyone who loves the game and wants more, should absolutely be obsessed with sales figures.

@Northern_munkey I know people are arguing with you because you didn’t sing the game’s praises but you didn’t say anything bad. Most sequels to new ip games tend to sell significantly fewer copies than the original, especially if it is a single player game. People see a new ip and want to try it out and then some realize that it isn’t for them. Horizon Zero Dawn sold 24 million copies while the sequel just passed 8 million sold for a specific example. Even looking at other Sony franchises the sequels sell fewer copies over time. Killzone, Resistance, Infamous, Sly Cooper, and even the recent Spider-Man games have sold fewer copies with each passing sequel. This has no bearing on the quality of those games, just that many gamers buy the initial offering out of hype and then realize the franchise is not their cup of tea. I myself have no interest in Yotei because despite buying the first game day one I realized after a while I had my fill. I am sure there are plenty of other people who feel the same way.

@Northern_munkey in the UK physical copies were down 40% compared to GoT. But overall physical copies on playstation since 2020 has fallen by 53% so GoY has performed great in that aspect. Let's also take into account every PS4 had a disc drive. PS5 has consoles with or without disc drives. Be interesting to see the ratio of Digital console to disc drive console sales for PS5

No actual real concrete sales numbers are out (which if there was something to brag about you know there would be bragging) and Sony has already started winding down online adverts for the game.

Famitsu 1st week showed Yotei at no 1 with 120K copies sold, physical copy only. UK chart showed Yotei at no 1 and EU chart showed at no 2 in the 1st week.

It's not a far fetch to say it sold really well despite Sony not yet show worldwide numbers.

How exactly did SM2 lose 40% of the sales of SM1? The sequel sold 11m units by April 2024. Are you comparing the lifetime(5 years+) of SM to the 6 month sales of SM2? 🤣🤣🤣
