@playstation1995 Yeah, I might try find a pro second hand for now at least, as they are discontinued new. Only new Playstation generally available in shops at the moment is the slim.
@playstation1995 I did like the UK version, Steptoe and Son, especially the older episodes. Shame we never got Sanford on tv here that I recall, so I've only see clips.
I had to initialise my PS4 due to an error and lost my progress in Ghost of Tsushima, put me off going back to the game, but hopefully can find a PS5 at some point and start over!
@playstation1995 Different Strokes, that theme song really takes me back... We had Steptoe and Son on tv here which was still getting rerun in the 80s, but I don't think they showed Sandford.
I bought Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection and I really like the game so far. I appreciate the difficulty levels making the game initially more accessible before allowing you to up the challenge.
The magic and ability to carry more than one weapon with upgrades also add some additional strategy to the stages. I also think the game looks great though I was initially not sure about the art style.
I remember using a glitch in the first game to 'fly' to some degree with the mounds you did have, was a fun glitch to try and the landscape looked good from the sky.
If I could play Demon's Souls remake at 30 fps at a lower resolution on my PS4, I'd probably buy it to be honest. Can't play it at all at the moment as can't get a PS5.
I own Squadrons on PS4 and VF5 on PS3, so not the best month for me, no. I'll certainty download VF5 on PS4, but I was never very good at the VF games... I have fond memories of playing VF2 and 3 in the London Trocadero back in the 90s though.
@Robocod I think it is still available over on the PS3 if not PS4, I have it there in the SEGA ages line up with Alex Kidd. I like the way Dragons's Trap and the upcoming Alex Kidd remake have the old and new versions.
The Dragon's Trap is my favourite, so much nostalgia playing that on the Master System and I thought the remake was excellent. I've played the original Monster World IV, but never been compelled to complete the game. I'm also not sure about these 3D graphics, so be waiting for a sale to play this I think.
Enjoying Blackthorne 32X version on the Blizzard arcade collection. Never played the game but I like it. Also bought the Namco Museum archive NES collection Vol.1 in the psn sale and having fun with the NES style 'demake' of Pacman Championship edition.
@JamieO Yep, whereas the PS3 could output 50Hz, the PS4 cant. Caused a few issues with the PAL PS2 releases too, as Digital Foundry covered. I really like the Turrican collection, the new control options made the games more enjoyable to play for me. Up to jump was always a pain!
@JamieO Yep, I'm really enjoying the 32X version of Blackthorne on the Blizzard collection, its a game I'd wanted get around to for a while. They've also added two new games to the collection as an update.
Nice to see the Bitmap Brothers collection and the Evercade Vs. announcement. I feel going for some Megadrive Bitmap ports over the Amiga is a bit of a shame there though, Bomb the Bass' 'Megablast' is a bit lacking on the Megadrive. The Turrican collection bringing Amiga emulation to PS4 was great.
@JamieO Nice review! I'm holding off on this collection for now, I did have the PS3 Capcom collection, plus have the PSP ones (great to play on Vita) and some of the Saturn Capcom Generation Japanese releases I imported years back. Also have the Street Fighter Anniversary collection and the Beat 'em up Bunble on PS4.
Did pick up one of the Namco collections and the Blizzard collection in the current PSN retro sale though!
@playstation1995 Strider was great on the Megadrive too, still remember the first time I rented it.
@Dan_ozzzy189 Yeah, understandable, I picked up the Blizzard Arcade Collection in the sale which is pretty good, finally got to play Blackthorne on 32X.
I'll hold off this collection, G 'n G Resurrection also isn't really appealing to me for some reason, maybe in a sale.
@Dan_ozzzy189 Not good, hopefully a patch might sort things out, their refund policy on digital games certainly needs review. One of the early updates for Snow Runner totally broke the resolution of game on PS4 for about a month, I was stuck waiting for a patch to fix it, which thankfully there was in the end.
@Dan_ozzzy189 Yeah, its not clear, even with the 'joystick' mode it displays the touchpad to continue, but its L1! I might steer clear of the collection for now, I have most of the games on various other compilations.
@Dan_ozzzy189 Been trying the demo with 1943 and Ghosts 'n Goblins and a Hori mini fighting stick. I find if I go to Contoller Settings in the individual game, change to joystick, I can then add credits with L2 and start with X. Weirdly, X doesn't work to continue, but L1 does. Still found I needed to use a contol pad to switch ROM version though.
I still have Sonic Jam for my Saturn, and Sonic CD on PS3. Seeing the wide screen in the trailer though, I wonder if 1&2 are Christian Whithead's updated versions available on mobile.
I think Colours was quite good and I did own it on the Wii, but Generations at 60fps would be of more interest to me. Lost World would have been a good one too, as I never played that but it did look interesting, I liked the 3DS version.
I have the digital PS3 version and its a great looking game there too. You could do a lot of costume customisation on PS3, so wonder if they will bring that over.
Already own Squadrons, got the game at launch. Didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. I own VF5 over on PS3, its a very good game, probably an excellent one, but I'm not very good at the VF games, despite playing them since the Saturn.
I have the game in many other compilations, I remember the old Capcom arcade compilation on PS3 (which I did buy in full) gave you Black Tiger for free. Worth a download, though I doubt I'll buy the packs for this.
@The_New_Butler I remember, as I bought Robocop when it came out in the big box (full price) C64 tape version and I couldn't beat the stage. Thanks Ocean Software. I never knew until years later, the magazines at the time said nothing, at least what I read. I think I used a POKE to stop the timer and accessed the glitched next stage, but assumed it was just my copy. Tape loading was pretty unreliable anyway.
Rastan C64 also had a bug with a pretty much impassable rope swing on C64, but at least if you skip the stage, the game continues.
The graphics update was significant for a 'remaster' even on base PS4. Digital Foundry did a video on the game and as remasters go, some real effort was put in here. I bought it in a sale recently and have only played a bit but I assume even the PS4 version runs better on PS5 as you can unlock the framerate from 30, I think.
@thefourfoldroot I agree, I think SR4 is a great game.
Rebought the Megadrive collection on PS4 so started with some Revenge of Shinobi and Street of Rage. I'm also still playing Dark Souls 3, as the game is really holding my attention for the two dlc packs. Very glad I picked this one up again in the sale.
@gamiller1978 Dark Souls is great at presenting those situations which can get to a point of seeming almost impossible, until you finally get past. I played the first two back on PS3
@SoulChimera Yep, I have the PC, PSP and original Xbox version, but Coast to Coast is an amazing game that should still be available. Or, maybe its time for OutRun 3 even.
Golden Axe in a Streets of Rage 4 style would be good, or put Revenge of Death Adder out digitally outside of Astro City Mini. Also, maybe do something with Shinobi!
So many great arcade games they could port over, realise OutRun 2006 would have licensing issues, but how about OutRunners or Scud Race, or Daytona 2.
How about a retro Shining compilation, with the dungeon crawlers and the strategy games.
Still playing Dark Souls 3 after picking it up in the sale, going to do the dlc before I complete the game I think. Not sure why I abandoned this game in 2016, maybe after DS2 and Bloodborne I was a bit tired of the style. Thankfully, my save was on the cloud so picked up where I left off.
Demo didn't grab me, but Ive played pretty much all of them since I rented the first game on my SEGA Saturn. So am sure will want to play it, but to be honest I preferred RE2 and RE3 remake to RE7. I did like 7 though, 4, 5, and 6 less so with each game. I thought Revelations 2 was kind of what the series needed at that point, low budget, but a bit more horror based.
@Goodguyjusty Yep, I agree. By the time in RE4 I was fighting a monster with a mini gun with waves of enemies (towards the end), it just didn't feel like Resident Evil anymore to me. I like the RE3 remake too, as although had more action than 2, it still encouraged you to dodge and save ammo.
I don't get why RE4 is held in such high regard. I had it at launch on Gamecube and even there I got tired before the end with all the shooting.
I feel both remakes supassed RE4 for me, I'd certainly rather play them again at this point.
The combat in the Villiage demo didn't feel good to me either, I felt the enemies were just absorbing the shots. I think I'll watch some more gameplay before I decide on this one initially, though as a series fan since the PS1 / Saturn, will want to play it at some point.
I own wreckfest on PS4, good arcade style fun playing the track with the loop with my steering wheel. I bought it at launch as a racing game fan, will add the PS5 version to my Library.
I'm not really into FPS or survival type games, so probably just add the others to my Library for now too. Since getting back into Dark Souls 3 lately, that game is taking all my non retro game time anyway.
@SoulChimera Ah Bits, yeah late night channel 4, I did watch that, though was quite a bit later on. Remeber the Shenmue preview. The style was so very 90s. I remember Movies, games and videos and Cyberbet too, I think. Dont remeber the others, but I only had the standard TV channels at the time.
@playstation1995 Yep, can find clips of our shows on youtube too, they both had a distinct style, as Games Master was aimed at a slightly older audience. 90s was a great time for video games no doubt!
@playstation1995 On TV in the UK we had 'Games Master' on Channel 4 and 'Bad Influence' on ITV. I remember recording a Sonic 2 preview on VHS and watching it over and over in anticipation of the games release.
I used to get Zzap!64, SEGA Power and SEGA Force... think I'd stopped buying magazines mostly by Saturn / PS1 era. I did get Retro Gamer when that started though.
Was so exciting to see a game preview you were interested in a magazine back then, before you could look anything up online.
@JamieO Last Ninja 2 is probably better than the original! I still play now and again. I had the standard version, only had a couple of 'big box' games, did have Bart Vs. Space Mutants which came with a badge. Game was awful though!
@Futureshark Yep, the late, great, Ben Daglish. I remember the music really struck me the first time I played The Last Ninja back then (on cassette from WHSmith). The music alleviated the frustration of the difficult isometric jumping!
@JamieO I have the C64 mini too, its pretty good, they've updated firmware recently to enable disc swapping. Only issue with the mini is the joystick, but you can buy a Micro Switch version though, which is better.
Started with some Last Ninja on the C64. Might go back to the Turrican Flashback collection on PS4. Also rebought Dark Souls 3 in the PSN sale and picking up where I left off a couple of years ago, as still had my save.
Certainly, played this at launch on PS4 and still have the disc, but was one game where I remember really thinking would be good to play at a higher frame rate. When I find a PS5, will replay it I think.
@JamieO I'm a big fan of Golden Axe, grew up playing classic arcades and some not so great 8-bit mirco ports! I started reading Retro Gamer at issue one, but my subscription lapsed a while ago...
Thanks for the additional info, will certainly look into this game. If you've not seen it Digital Foundry also did a video on Turrican when the collection came out, with Chris Huelsbeck talking about his compositions for Turrican 2, worth checking out.
@JamieO Chaos Engine certainly jumped to mind when I watched Digital Foundry playing the game earlier this week. I though the game looked and sounded great, thanks for the review!
Didn't realise was same artist as Contra 4, still have my copy of that game for the DS, which imported back when it was released.
Going to watch some more gameplay but looks like a game I'll want to pick up. Wonder if this could show up on the Evercade in future...
