Re: May 2021 PS Plus Games Are Available to Download Now

Ristar24

I own wreckfest on PS4, good arcade style fun playing the track with the loop with my steering wheel. I bought it at launch as a racing game fan, will add the PS5 version to my Library.

I'm not really into FPS or survival type games, so probably just add the others to my Library for now too. Since getting back into Dark Souls 3 lately, that game is taking all my non retro game time anyway.

@Futureshark Yep, the late, great, Ben Daglish. I remember the music really struck me the first time I played The Last Ninja back then (on cassette from WHSmith). The music alleviated the frustration of the difficult isometric jumping!

@JamieO I have the C64 mini too, its pretty good, they've updated firmware recently to enable disc swapping. Only issue with the mini is the joystick, but you can buy a Micro Switch version though, which is better.

Re: Mini Review: Battle Axe (PS4) - Top-Down Mix of Brawler and Run-'n'-Gun with Henk Nieborg Pixel Art

Ristar24

@JamieO I'm a big fan of Golden Axe, grew up playing classic arcades and some not so great 8-bit mirco ports! I started reading Retro Gamer at issue one, but my subscription lapsed a while ago...

Thanks for the additional info, will certainly look into this game. If you've not seen it Digital Foundry also did a video on Turrican when the collection came out, with Chris Huelsbeck talking about his compositions for Turrican 2, worth checking out.

@JamieO Chaos Engine certainly jumped to mind when I watched Digital Foundry playing the game earlier this week. I though the game looked and sounded great, thanks for the review!

Didn't realise was same artist as Contra 4, still have my copy of that game for the DS, which imported back when it was released.

Going to watch some more gameplay but looks like a game I'll want to pick up. Wonder if this could show up on the Evercade in future...

Re: All Resident Evil Games Ranked and Best Places to Start

Ristar24

@Channel42 Agree with you there. I had RE4 at launch on GameCube and even with the then Impressive visuals, the gameplay felt a bit tired to me as it went on. Enter area, shoot everything, move to next area. The set pieces were impressive and it had some great moments, but it seemed to start the path to RE6... moving away from the tension of 'survival horror' and into block buster style action.

I just got around to RE3 remake and I really enjoyed the game.

Re: Nintendo Wii Exclusive Sonic Colors Could Be Lighting Up PS4

Ristar24

Was an OK Wii game, was graphically impressive for the system and hopefully PS4 would boost it up to 60fps. I'd actually like Sonic Lost World on something other than Wii U. Not played Lost World myself, but looked increasingly different to the other games (I did have the 3DS version).

Re: Reaction: Days Gone Was PS4's Black Sheep, But a Darn Good Open World Game

Ristar24

I bought Days Gone when it came out, I really did enjoy the open world, the hordes and upgrading the bike. The weather systems looked great too, with rain, wind and snow. Weirdly I've still not completed the game, but do intend to at some point.

I do own Ghost of Tsushima, but I just couldn't seem to get interested in the game for some reason, I played the intro and put it down. Again, do plan to get back to the game at some point.

Re: 10 Digital-Only PSP, PS Vita Games to Buy Before the PS Store Closes

Ristar24

I'd say get the PSP Capcom arcade collections. Playable on PSP of course with the disc versions, but nice to have digitally. Great arcade emulations of Final Fight, Strider, Street Fighter 2 and Ghouls 'n Ghosts, all on your Vita.

Will also give a shout to TxK, as Jeff Minter has made some great arcade style games, and its a title I often return to. If you like Tempest, its a must play.

Re: Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX Coming to Both PS5 and PS4 This Summer

Ristar24

Everyone who had this this game built into their Master System may get nostalgic for this! I think the original is a great game, though Alex is tricky to control on small platforms and the random chance boss encounters annoyed me back in the day. I still have the nice M2 version on PS3 where I finally beat the game after many years. Will pick this one up too I think. Certainly preferable to his Megadrive game.

If your Master System cart wasn't properly inserted for whatever reason, Alex Kidd would boot up with that intro music, which also plays if you select the game icon on the PS3 XMB.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 370

Ristar24

Bought RE3 remake in the current PS4 sale so started playing that. I really like it, even if Nemesis is more scripted than expected and its not the most faithful adaptation of the original. I did enjoy the RE2 remake, but the shift in tone to a more linear action game works well to differentiate the two.

Re: 10 Digital-Only PS3 Games You Should Buy Before Sony Shuts the PS Store

Ristar24

Daytona USA! Its removal is a real shame as its a great version of an all time classic arcade racer, and I believe backward compatible over on Xbox. Also the SEGA Ages games if you like retro games, M2 versions of Revenge of Shinobi, Alex Kidd in Miracle Word... The 60Hz versions of PS1 Resident Evil 2 and 3 for PAL gamers (stuck with 50Hz if we use original PAL PS1 discs).

So many games really, its a real shame what Sony are delisting here, I still regularly play my PS3.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 369

Ristar24

Bough the two Arkham games in the current PS4 sale, so started replaying those... I really enjoyed the games back on PS3, so thought would see how the 'remasters' are. Edit: City has pretty bad framerate issues on my 'base' PS4, so I wouldn't recomend it to be honest, though Asylum seems OK.

Re: Soapbox: PS5 Has Turned Me Into a Total 60FPS Snob

Ristar24

I'd take a perfectly frame paced 30fps, over a wavering uncapped framerate. If 60fps is available, I'd go for that, but I have a base PS4 so on most games fidelity would take a significant hit.

I think I play many games fine at 30fps, I notice the difference mostly when switching between the two but then adjust to it. Also seems more important in some types of games than others, so racing games or fighting games I would prefer at 60fps.
