I own wreckfest on PS4, good arcade style fun playing the track with the loop with my steering wheel. I bought it at launch as a racing game fan, will add the PS5 version to my Library.
I'm not really into FPS or survival type games, so probably just add the others to my Library for now too. Since getting back into Dark Souls 3 lately, that game is taking all my non retro game time anyway.
@SoulChimera Ah Bits, yeah late night channel 4, I did watch that, though was quite a bit later on. Remeber the Shenmue preview. The style was so very 90s. I remember Movies, games and videos and Cyberbet too, I think. Dont remeber the others, but I only had the standard TV channels at the time.
@playstation1995 Yep, can find clips of our shows on youtube too, they both had a distinct style, as Games Master was aimed at a slightly older audience. 90s was a great time for video games no doubt!
@playstation1995 On TV in the UK we had 'Games Master' on Channel 4 and 'Bad Influence' on ITV. I remember recording a Sonic 2 preview on VHS and watching it over and over in anticipation of the games release.
I used to get Zzap!64, SEGA Power and SEGA Force... think I'd stopped buying magazines mostly by Saturn / PS1 era. I did get Retro Gamer when that started though.
Was so exciting to see a game preview you were interested in a magazine back then, before you could look anything up online.
@JamieO Last Ninja 2 is probably better than the original! I still play now and again. I had the standard version, only had a couple of 'big box' games, did have Bart Vs. Space Mutants which came with a badge. Game was awful though!
@Futureshark Yep, the late, great, Ben Daglish. I remember the music really struck me the first time I played The Last Ninja back then (on cassette from WHSmith). The music alleviated the frustration of the difficult isometric jumping!
@JamieO I have the C64 mini too, its pretty good, they've updated firmware recently to enable disc swapping. Only issue with the mini is the joystick, but you can buy a Micro Switch version though, which is better.
Started with some Last Ninja on the C64. Might go back to the Turrican Flashback collection on PS4. Also rebought Dark Souls 3 in the PSN sale and picking up where I left off a couple of years ago, as still had my save.
Certainly, played this at launch on PS4 and still have the disc, but was one game where I remember really thinking would be good to play at a higher frame rate. When I find a PS5, will replay it I think.
@JamieO I'm a big fan of Golden Axe, grew up playing classic arcades and some not so great 8-bit mirco ports! I started reading Retro Gamer at issue one, but my subscription lapsed a while ago...
Thanks for the additional info, will certainly look into this game. If you've not seen it Digital Foundry also did a video on Turrican when the collection came out, with Chris Huelsbeck talking about his compositions for Turrican 2, worth checking out.
@JamieO Chaos Engine certainly jumped to mind when I watched Digital Foundry playing the game earlier this week. I though the game looked and sounded great, thanks for the review!
Didn't realise was same artist as Contra 4, still have my copy of that game for the DS, which imported back when it was released.
Going to watch some more gameplay but looks like a game I'll want to pick up. Wonder if this could show up on the Evercade in future...
I played the first and missed the second. I was a bit underwhelmed by what I played to be honest as a fan of the RE2 and 3 remakes, but I am on 'base' PS4 so frames dropped a fair bit. Will try again now there's a decent window.
Got Saints Row 3 Remastered on PS4 in the sale, so enjoying some absurdity there... Also been going back to my C64 recently for some retro gaming, Platoon and Batman the Movie are two favourites from Ocean I still enjoy to play, great SID tunes too.
@Channel42 Agree with you there. I had RE4 at launch on GameCube and even with the then Impressive visuals, the gameplay felt a bit tired to me as it went on. Enter area, shoot everything, move to next area. The set pieces were impressive and it had some great moments, but it seemed to start the path to RE6... moving away from the tension of 'survival horror' and into block buster style action.
I just got around to RE3 remake and I really enjoyed the game.
How does 45fps work with a 60Hz refresh rate... My guess is its targeting 60fps but hovering around 45 on average. To be honest, the other RE remakes on PS4 were mostly around 40-50fps in action I think, and they played fine to me somehow even though I normally find variable frame rates distracting.
Shenmue 3? I really liked Days Gone and I would be really interested to see a PS5 sequel, to see what they could do with the new tech, with the hordes and the open world. The weather effects and atmosphere were really impressive in this game too.
@TheFrenchiestFry Thanks for the clarification, I remember Sonic Boom looked awful. Be good if Lost World gets a more general release some day, as I say I had the 3DS version and was pretty good.
@RubyCarbuncle I didn't know that, strange went to PC over PS4 though. Maybe Nintendo had some sort of console exclusivity, or perhaps it just didn't do well enough for SEGA to think worth a port.
Was an OK Wii game, was graphically impressive for the system and hopefully PS4 would boost it up to 60fps. I'd actually like Sonic Lost World on something other than Wii U. Not played Lost World myself, but looked increasingly different to the other games (I did have the 3DS version).
I bought Days Gone when it came out, I really did enjoy the open world, the hordes and upgrading the bike. The weather systems looked great too, with rain, wind and snow. Weirdly I've still not completed the game, but do intend to at some point.
I do own Ghost of Tsushima, but I just couldn't seem to get interested in the game for some reason, I played the intro and put it down. Again, do plan to get back to the game at some point.
After playing the RE3 remake for the first time last week, I re-bought RE2 in the sale on PS4 and decided play thought again. Both great games in their own way.
Not interest in buying an Xbox at all, at the same time, I'm not really feeling the need to get a PS5 at the moment either, even if it was possible to find one.
I thought the original was amazing on PS3 but found I played though it pretty much just once. A remake doesn't really appeal to me, I wasn't really up for the sequel either.
I'd say get the PSP Capcom arcade collections. Playable on PSP of course with the disc versions, but nice to have digitally. Great arcade emulations of Final Fight, Strider, Street Fighter 2 and Ghouls 'n Ghosts, all on your Vita.
Will also give a shout to TxK, as Jeff Minter has made some great arcade style games, and its a title I often return to. If you like Tempest, its a must play.
@playstation1995 Yeah, I guess the Master System was not well know in the US at the time as the NES seemed to be the popular 8-bit system. There are some great games on there though, I tend to play them on the Megadrive / Genesis these days, as I have a Power Base Converter.
@playstation1995 I'd say this Master System game is better than Enchanted Castle, even with the smaller sprites. Certainly worth a look if you've not played it before. Shinobi World, as mentioned above, is also a really fun Master System game, if a bit easier than this one!
Everyone who had this this game built into their Master System may get nostalgic for this! I think the original is a great game, though Alex is tricky to control on small platforms and the random chance boss encounters annoyed me back in the day. I still have the nice M2 version on PS3 where I finally beat the game after many years. Will pick this one up too I think. Certainly preferable to his Megadrive game.
If your Master System cart wasn't properly inserted for whatever reason, Alex Kidd would boot up with that intro music, which also plays if you select the game icon on the PS3 XMB.
I remember Rage on PS3, the textures popped in whenever you moved the camera... was so distracting. This isn't a game I was personally interested in, but I pretty much stopped buying new games unseen after Dark Souls 2 on PS3 turned out to be so very different to the pre launch advertised 'gameplay'.
Bought RE3 remake in the current PS4 sale so started playing that. I really like it, even if Nemesis is more scripted than expected and its not the most faithful adaptation of the original. I did enjoy the RE2 remake, but the shift in tone to a more linear action game works well to differentiate the two.
Daytona USA! Its removal is a real shame as its a great version of an all time classic arcade racer, and I believe backward compatible over on Xbox. Also the SEGA Ages games if you like retro games, M2 versions of Revenge of Shinobi, Alex Kidd in Miracle Word... The 60Hz versions of PS1 Resident Evil 2 and 3 for PAL gamers (stuck with 50Hz if we use original PAL PS1 discs).
So many games really, its a real shame what Sony are delisting here, I still regularly play my PS3.
Bough the two Arkham games in the current PS4 sale, so started replaying those... I really enjoyed the games back on PS3, so thought would see how the 'remasters' are. Edit: City has pretty bad framerate issues on my 'base' PS4, so I wouldn't recomend it to be honest, though Asylum seems OK.
The Sinking City would have benefited from removing the shooting in my opinion, it was really clunky and didn't really add to the atmosphere. I also miss the older Crimes and Punishments and ealier designs for Holmes and Watson.
@wiiware I get you there, I played through Fallen Order on my base PS4 and did enjoy the game, but was often thinking the game would benefit from smoother performance, due to the nature of the combat.
I'd take a perfectly frame paced 30fps, over a wavering uncapped framerate. If 60fps is available, I'd go for that, but I have a base PS4 so on most games fidelity would take a significant hit.
I think I play many games fine at 30fps, I notice the difference mostly when switching between the two but then adjust to it. Also seems more important in some types of games than others, so racing games or fighting games I would prefer at 60fps.
Its actually really difficult to see how you buy stuff on the PS3 store already. No prices are listed and you have to click on the game image and add to your cart to see the price. So whiIe I have bought some digital PS3 games recently, its sort of hidden already (at least on the PS3 store here in the UK).
Not good really, having psp and PS1 games available on the Vita is convenient. As someone mentioned above, this would remove the PS1 Library which is a shame. Also, I don't have all my purchased games downloaded so would be very poor if can't download items already purchased.
I played on PS3 originally. I downloaded a demo I think and found it really compelling, ended up waiting for the episodes as they came out. I really liked the game but weirdly as the sequels arrived, I didn't play them.
