Re: Shenmue 3 Enhanced Brings Big Upgrades and Must-Have Collector's Editions to PS5

Ristar24

Finally got back to the PS4 version on PS5, much better framerate and I'm going to see if can completethe game. I have the 'day one' edition but yet to finish it. Shame they can't put the SEGA arcades back in really, I still have both Dreamcast games, was a big fan at the time. I'd not rush out to get this one as 3 did not quite hit the highs of the originals for me.

Edit, ah OK there is an upgrade path so I might get it if a low cost and works with the disc version.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 624

Ristar24

@JamieO Always good to share a retro recommendation, cheers!

This weekend I'm working today, but hopefully have some time to play the C64 versions of International Karate and Last Ninja 1/2 on the new System 3 collection (on Switch). I have a lot of nostalgia for those games.

On PS5 still enjoying Tokyo Xtreme Racer which is great, and started playing Dragon's Dogma 2, which I really like so far, only about 10 hours into the game.

Re: Poll: Has PS5's Dynamic Pricing Debacle Changed Your Relationship with the PS Store at All?

Ristar24

Not so much now I have the disc drive added to my digital model, will be going back to mostly second hand disc games for lower prices and trade in resale value. I still think raising the price after you sign in is a very dubious practice, and I don't think it should be permitted. Would be similar to scanning your loyalty card in a shop and the price goes up instead of down.

Re: As PS6 Delay Rumours Swirl, Fans Debate Ray Tracing's Worth

Ristar24

@twitchtvpat I dont have a pro, of course glad the option is there if the hardware activity supports it. For me framerate is the definite priority if I have an option where a game can't run smoothly with RT on, but understand people have different preferences. Having both would be preferential but pushes the cost up out of my range at the moment. I think the implementation really matters too, some games seem to be more transformative than others, but I can only go on those I've tried so far.

Re: Resident Evil Requiem Records Strong Japanese Sales, But Still Dwarfed by Resident Evil 5 and 6

Ristar24

I tend to think unless you really wanted to play on the Switch 2 portable, the PS5 makes more sense for RE as it's a superior version for the same price. While Switch 2 fidelity looks good, the framerate is not optional from what I have seen.

Good to see Tokyo Xtreme Racer in the charts, I had the game on pre-order and it's great to have the series I enjoyed so much on Dreamcast back.

Re: Resident Evil Requiem's Physical UK Launch 'Much Bigger' Than Village, 4 Remake

Ristar24

I decided to play the Alone in the Dark game from 2024 instead on PS5 as it's so cheap, ha. I've watched some of the action scenes and they look a bit over the top and recall RE6 to me. The survival horror bits with Grace look like my type of thing. Really does look like a game of two halves, and the fact they have different recommended perspectives, seems to reaffirm that. Looking forward to trying the game myself in the next couple of months or so though. I was always late to the RE party, I played the first game on the Saturn and first owned a copy of RE2 on Dreamcast. In the meantime I still need to finish Tormented Souls 2. Glad to see the game is selling though, you can tell a lot of work has gone into it.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 622

Ristar24

Mainly Tokyo Xtreme Racer, I had the game pre ordered and not disappointed, it's great. I've also got back playing Shenmue 3 now I have a PS5 as the framerate is much nicer, so feels like I'm back on the Dreamcast this weekend. Also bought the recent Alone in the Dark reboot as wanted to see how the game is, was really cheap to pick up now.

Re: Shuttered Dev Bluepoint Wanted to Remake Bloodborne, FromSoftware Blocked It

Ristar24

Honestly, I don't think they really got the visual design of Demon's Souls, even though I think it was technically quite an achievement and still a good game. They changed a lot of the style, and much of it felt much more like a generic fantasy than what From Software achieved. The shame is the original is trapped on PS3 so many people wont have the chance to play the original Demon's Souls. To an extent, the PS5 game replaces the original with something that for me while certainly more technically advanced, is more visually generic. With Bloodborne, a 60fps and resolution improvement would be great alone, the game exceptional as it is. I still liked Bluepoint a lot for their work on the PS3 HD collections, but honestly I don't think Bloodborne needs a reinterpretation.

Re: It's a Big Week for Fans of Arcade Racing Games on PS5

Ristar24

I had Tokyo Xtreme Racer on pre-order so playing this evening, first impressions are great, takes me right back to enjoying the series on my Dreamcast. So pleased to see Genki back on consoles. I'll want to pick up Rave Racer, so maybe next month. The PS5 release of PSP Ridge Racers 2 is hard to beat, but glad Rave Racer is finally coming to home consoles.

Arcade racing games probably remain my favourite genre of video games, right from when I first played Pole Position on the Atari 2600.

Re: Resident Evil Requiem (PS5) - Two-in-One Horror Not Quite an All-Timer

Ristar24

So great moments of Survival horror, but kind of descends into action towards the end is my reading. I felt in Villiage Capcom was falling back into the 'throw everything at the wall' approach which RE6 really tripped up on. The tonal shifts felt a bit jarring.

I remember how tired I got of RE4 by the time I reached the Island (and I had the game day one on GameCube). Waves of enemies for me do not make a good RE game, puzzles, suspense and atmosphere do. Will certainly try it but I'll be trading some stuff in to get a good price on a disc copy. I started with RE on the Saturn, so I'm bound to want to play the game either way. In the meantime, I did buy Tormented Souls 2 recently, so will push on with that first.

Re: Incoming Xbox Boss Promises a 'Renewed Commitment to Console', and 'Hears' Fans on Skipping PS5

Ristar24

Funny thinking back, I remember when Xbox was new, SEGA was bowing out. I did have and original Xbox but only bought a 360 years after it was relevant. They cant really trade on nostalgia like Nintendo, SEGA, or even PlayStation with PS1 for 90s kids. For an older gamer like me, they were pretty late to the party though they did have Out Run 2 as an exclusive initially (which is why I bought the console). The brand feels a bit pointless these days to me personally.

Re: Sony's Left Bloodborne Fans More Frustrated Than Ever Following Bluepoint Shutdown

Ristar24

While I wasn't massively thrilled with the artistic and visual design changes to Demon's Souls, I appreciated what an achievement it was. Shadow of the Colossus was remarkable for me too. With Bloodborne, I'd be happy with a 60fps patch to be honest and some improvement to the resolution. Would have been amazing if they had updated Silent Hill 2 and 3 as functional HD collections back on PS3, or even now I'd really like to see the originals readily available on modern platforms.

Re: Opinion: The Euphoric Reaction to PS6's Rumoured Delay Really Confuses Me

Ristar24

The prices of admission are very high, at this point it's a pretty big investment so people want their money's worth. I only got a PS5 at Christmas and as someone still on a 1080p telly, I'm really happy with the graphics and performance. To be honest I'm playing a lot of PS4 games with the improved performance so not personally wishing for another expensive update to what PS5 offers.

Re: PS5 Is Becoming a Really Great Place to Play Retro Games

Ristar24

Its funny, as I recently finally got a PS5 I redownloaded Double Dragon IV which despite it's super retro NES style presentation, I recalled had screen tearing (somehow) on PS4. I was pleasantly suprised to find the pure power of PS5 seems to have eliminated the issue, which is nice. I play quite a few retro games on the newer console, shame we've had SEGA ages releases since the PS3, but at least lots of games in the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series.

I liked the Ren and Stimpy Show, never played the games.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 620

Ristar24

Bought the Wreckfest PS5 upgrade so going back to that as really enjoyed the game on PS4. Also playing the Sinking City again, Jedi Survivor for the first time.

Retro-wise, it's Shadowgate via the 8-bit Adventure Anthology and the original Sonic the Hedgehog via the Origins collection on PS5. Will probably play some SEGA Rally on my Saturn, the game never gets old for me.

@JamieO I like the Jurassic collect, but own it on Switch! The Game Boy Jurassic Park 2 was a nice discovery for me, reminds me of Ocean's best and even sounds like a C64 game.

Re: Some of SEGA's Retro Revivals May Release within the Next Year

Ristar24

Been thinking where have these gone. Really it's OutRun I want back, 2006 is still one of the best arcade racing games ever made, but theres no easy way to play it on modern systems. I still have the PC-CD version, PSP and Xbox. Missed Online Arcade on PS3 before it was delisted.

@PacPern123 Me too, it seemed so weird the sequel was on Xbox, Dreamcast felt like where the game belonged, still remember downloading pictures on the internet browser to the VMU and using them as graffiti, seemed so novel at the time.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 619

Ristar24

Been going back to RE2 Remake, playing for the first time on PS5, played originally on PS4, it's a nice upgrade. Downloaded the Arcade Archives title Top Speed, which is twitchy to play, but a nice OutRun style game to discover, Chase HQ without the chase part. Also playing some Ridge Racer-R4 (PS1) and Ridge Racer 2 (PSP), on PS5.

Retro console-wise, will be some Streets of Rage on the Mega Drive I think.

Re: Larian CEO Swen Vincke Sticks His Foot in It Again, Thinks Game Reviewers Should Also Be Reviewed

Ristar24

If one of the biggest criticisms of reviews is often that they are too subjective, how subjective would a review of a reviewer be. I am sure I 'review' everything I read, but if I dont agree, I can usually see why not, and that's enough for me. I'm quite happy for my opinion on how enjoyable a game is to differ to others in general. I'd rather write my own game review than review a reviewer.

Also these days you can watch gameplay to get a good sense of a game, it's not like the old days when we paid for magazines with screen shots and a couple of opinions to go on.

Re: All Signs Point to Resident Evil: Code Veronica PS5 Remake in 2027

Ristar24

I appreciate that Capcom are remaking the games, but also making the originals still available to play on newer systems. Code Veronica wasn't my favourite to play, even when the game was new on Dreamcast. I'd still be interested to see how a remake would turn out. I don't find the tank controls dated though, I'm quite happy to play newer games in that style though it's evident RE is not going back to them.

Re: PS1 Ridge Racer Poised for PS5, PS4 via PS Plus Premium

Ristar24

Hmm, I respectfully disagree, the PS1 version is something quite unique and the arcade does not allow you to have that 3rd person view of the car. Also will be first time us people in PAL land have the game officially running in 60Hz (at 30fps, granted). Arcade racers are a timeless genre for me, as long as they play well. For me, this is an anticipated PS1 game to have. I mean, it's no SEGA Rally Championship, but it's fun.

Re: PS Plus Extra, Premium Games for January 2026 Leaked

Ristar24

I picked a good month to finally get a PS5 and subscribe. The original PS1 Ridge Racer is one I'll buy to play even outside the subscription. Classic and a great compliment to the arcade version now also available with the Arcade Archives release.
