I wont be migrating to PS5 or Switch 2 at this point, so many games to play on older consoles and so much cheaper. Hope they continue to release the PS Classics on PS4 as they are the games I have most fun with. My launch PS4 broke during the pandemic and I couldn't find a PS5, so bought a PS4 Slim which is so much quieter than the original 'jet engine' version. Still frequently play it, but also have my PS3 hooked up, can't play Daytona USA or Ridge Racer 7 natively on any later PlayStation.
Been playing on Switch, really enjoyable and I'm not even usually a shump fan, as I'm not very good at them. Got though easy mode and will be switching up to normal.
I've been playing PS1 RE2 on PS4. Not having to use the ink ribbons is cheating, but I've legitimately played the game so many times and its fun to zip about with save states under emulation, still a great game to play. Really pleased 2 and 3 have been added to the classics catalogue and I got them for 'free' as owned the PS3 versions.
Also been playing my favouite C64 game, Platoon, and Hero Quest and Where Time Stood Still, on the Spectrum.
As I got them 'for free' for owning the PS3 versions, I'm far from disappointed. Shame Sony dont offer the same with PS2 games I owned on PS3, but this is still pretty good compared to say Nintendo with their VC games being locked to the generation where I bought them, and now behind a subscription pay wall.
I've never really had an interest in trophies myself, but I appreciate others do enjoy what they offer.
@carlos82 I owned both on my UK PSN account (they were both released on PS3 as the 60Hz NTSC versions even in the UK). Checked today and both were download option only on PS4 for me (no purchase). I know RE1 took a while to update for me so perhaps check again when you have a chance.
I totally missed RE2 and 3 were announced, thats great. I own both on PS3 so wonder if will be a free download, PS1 games usually carry over (the first game did).
Very retro week, I finally bough the new Spectrum so will play some Great Escape (I originally has this on C64) and might put Scuba Dive on a USB (one of my favourite 48K games). Both games are so visually simple, but still have such stark atmosphere for me. Still playing God's on the Amiga too on Evercade, got to the third stage where the game gets tough.
In the modern(ish) world, be some PS4 as still playing Jedi Survivor.
Still use my PS3 and don't have a PS5. No modern arcade racers are as fun as Daytona or Ridge Racer 7 for me, I even have The Simpson's arcade game on there which is long delisted.
@JamieO It's partly why I like the Evercade, recently discovered the SNES RPG Dragon View there and what a great game. Just picked up Bitmap Brothers 2 today so will be playing some Amiga Gods. The Rare collection looks great, a Turrican or Last Ninja cart would be my most wanted.
Completed PS1 Loaded on Evercade last night, just as fun as I found it on the Saturn at the time. Shame the sequel isn't as good. This weekend be picking up on the Mega Drive game Arcus Odyssey also on Evercade, I'm at about the fifth stage.
Also bought Elite Dangerous on PS4 for less than £4 pounds in the current sale. Realise its a very incomplete version compared to PC, but I'd not played it in years and am enjoying starting over with some courier missions, something very relaxed about the pace.
@JamieO That 9 Years of Shadows game totally passed me by, has a nice retro style.
@Mostik Yep Hogs of War is great, I grew up watching The Young Ones so always liked Rik! I like the choice to bring games like Loaded back, also replayed PS1 Tomb Raider on there recently.
Picked up the recent Gremlin Collection 2 cart for Evercade, so it's back Loaded and Hogs of War on PS1. I had Loaded on Saturn and the time, and despite the repetition it's really fun to go back to, very much a 90s game. Hogs of War I'd never played, but what a great game to discover all these years later.
Also still playing some Jedi Survivor (PS4 version) and probably play some Ridge Racer 2 (PSP) on PS4 too.
Was happy to see Deus Ex. Weirdly though, PS1 and PSP purchases from the PS3 era seem to carry over and allow you to download the new emulations for free, but PS2 games do not.
Always glad to see new and varied additions to the classics catalogue and I appreciate being able to buy them individually generally, unlike NSO.
I'm happy with my PS4 amateur (had to replace my launch model with a new slim during the pandemic as it broke) and a Switch OLED for now. I'm going to wait and see how Switch 2 turns out at this point before investing in any new consoles.
Not for me, after my launch PS4 broke in the pandemic, I couldn't find a PS5 so replaced it with another PS4 Slim. I really enioyed the PS3 and PS4 and still use my consoles, but I moved over to Switch as my main gaming plaform. I started gaming back with the Atari 2600, but in recent years I've just lost interest in the race for the best graphics and what feels like increasing homogenous big budget game design. I'm going to wait out to see how the Switch successor turns out at this point.
@KoopaTheGamer That's correct, there was a delay with the original RE becoming available 'for free' on my PS4 as I owned the PS3 version so maybe that will be the case here.
No, I think the original game is one of the true greats, but I'm not drawn to a remake. While I don't begrudge the new game or anyone's appreciation of it, I think the absence of an easily available means to play the original on new consoles is a real shame. Playing Signalis for this first time at the moment, it's really good.
That's good approval to have, but It's quite a shame there is not a good official to play the outstanding original game on modern consoles at this point, in addition to the new version. I'm not really interested in the remake myself (plus I don't own anything that can run it)!
I no longer subscribe or have a PS5 but bought TimeSplitters 2 and 3 for my PS4. Such great games, I had a lot of fun playing 2 for the first time in years and regret I missed Future Perfect at the time. I don't know much about Concord, I've felt quite alienated from the current console generation overall and the direction of many of these newer live service games.
I played the original, but it didn't capture my interest at all, what felt to me like quite clunky combat, walking a bit and lining stuff up to progress. I may have been missing something and no affront intended to people who like this one, but I never finished the game or had much interest in a sequel.
It's funny as I remember the Capcom Generations games I had on Saturn included nice remixes right there on the disc. Also, I wish Streets of Rage 4 did something like this, the retro soundtrack option was so limited. Classic soundtracks and the ability to apply them flexibly is always a nice option.
I noticed with the recent PS1 releases there's a region selection, which is great for PAL gamers as we get 60Hz versions. G-Police, I remember playing this challenging but atmospheric game on my friends PS1 (I was a Saturn owner). The video sequences also really impressed me at the time.
Still playing Tears of the Kingdom, has to one of my favourite open world games ever at this point. Also playing some Dying Light, as decided to finally get around to playing it properly after buying the game years ago.
Nice, I've regularly played this one since release on PS4 and Switch. It's probably my favourite modern retro racer, OutRunners scaling meets OutRun 2 drifting, I think it's a really great game. Very happy to hear will be further expanded.
When not working, some more Tears of the Kingdom mostly. I think its a really great game. I still prefer the intricately designed environmental puzzles of the older 3D Zelda games, outside of the open world, and there are performance issues, but the game's separate elements all work together well in a way Breath of the Wild just didn't for me.
Also still playing V Rally 4 on PS4 after picking up super cheap on the PSN sale. I know it had average reviews, but has has a real PS1 / Saturn era arcade style 'feel' to the racing. The game seems to crash a lot though, and the only fix I've found seems to be taking it offline!
It's a lot, but then I remember Street Fighter 2 on the Mega Drive was £60, and Vitrua Racing was (I think) £80 or more...in the 90s! This was coming off £1.99 - £3.99 for tape games on the then popular 8-bit Mircos in the UK, the Spectrum and C64.
Cheaper games are always good though, I only buy a new game full price if it's something I really want to play at launch, and I don't pre order. It's really poor to see expensive games launch in a glitchy state, and requiring numerous patches to work properly.
I didn't really like Breath of the Wild, even though I bought it twice over a period to see if I could get into the game. Playing a few hours of the new game over the weekend, I immediately enjoyed it more. The weapons seem to last longer, there seems to be more direction by design. Will see if it continues to hold my attention, but to me at least it seems a real improvement over the previous game.
Nice, I was enjoying V Rally 4's gameplay on Switch despite the very compromised graphics after picking it up on sale, and the PS4 version is now £2.49!
That Starscream picture for a moment made me think I'd somehow missed some Transformers related gaming news, ha. Makes me want to boot up Fall of Cybertron on my PS4.
Still on my Skyward Sword HD play through for the moment, after too many open words I really appreciate the game's linear but intricate environmenal puzzle design.
About 20 hours in to my replay of Skyward Sword on Switch. Enjoying the game a lot more than I did on Wii, and remembering why I prefer the older more linear 3D Zelda games to Breath of the Wild, which I could not get in to.
Weirdly, I've ended up enjoying the NSO subscription more, as a convenient way to play retro games. Initially NSO didn't appeal, but as the systems included and their respective collections have grown, it's really improved for me.
I own a fairly decent retro collection and mostly own the games I wanted to obtain physically, but the convenience of an official retro game emulation subscription, and the nature of those games being more pick up and play, has seen me get good value out of the subscription on the Switch.
I'd still prefer if the option to 'buy' retro games digitally was there though, and that counts for PlayStation too... Ridge Racer as a premium game only, behind an expensive subscription, is a shame.
With PlayStation, I barely played the PS Plus games I recieved, I tend to buy the modern games I want to play.
When not at work... currently playing Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania (quite a nice update in some ways, but control feels a little off), Aggelos, and a replay of Skyward Sword in its HD Switch release.
Also been playing Street Fighter 2': Special Champion Edition, as was added to NSO. Have a lot of nostalgia for the Mega Drive version, and I always liked that you can add hidden turbo stars to Champion Edition with a button code.
Been playing Skyward Sword HD on Switch and has reminded what what I enjoy in Zelda games, not the open world but dungeons, metroid style item progression, and the carefully constructed environment puzzles. Was never a overly fan of the motion control in this one, so the standard controller options are good to have.
Also picked up Aggelos on sale as heard that its it's a good Wonder Boy style game. Definitely getting Master System vibes of the graphics and Sound, which makes nice a change as so many modern retro style games take the NES as their reference point. Have encountered some frame drops on Switch though, which is a shame for a retro style game.
Been playing some Bowser's Fury on the Switch. It's a really excellently designed game and put me in mind of what Sonic Frontiers was trying to achieve with an 'open zone' approach to a 3D platformer, but I've found BF much more enjoyable. I'd really like to see Nintendo expand the game's concepts into a larger Mario game.
I've also started playing Deliver us the Moon over on PS4.
It's where the market is I guess, once people stop buying PS4 versions of big budget AAA games, they will phase them out. I've not bought a PS5 yet and not in a rush to do so, I prefer retro style games mostly anyway and mostly game on Switch these days, but at least cross gen titles seem to scale better to PS4 than they did PS3. Developers aren't required to make every title cross gen, so to say its 'holding games back' is only the case if they choose to make a game cross gen, because they want the sales. Ultimately in the pursuit of technology you get to the 'consoles are holding back PC gaming' perspective.
The C64 wasn't discontinued until 1994 I believe, by which time the PS1 was readying for launch. Older, more affordable, tech always has an appeal, and great video games remain just as playable years after their technology is superseded.
The Master System version of Sonic 2 is better. I had the Game Gear version at launch, and it's not great, mimimal was done to alter the game design for the small screen except for zooming in way too far to adapt the resolution. That first boss as a result, is frustrating. Game Gear Sonic one is a much better effort, more background graphics and a new Sonic sprite with the game properly adapted to the Game Gear.
The PS4 demo seemed OK, it's not Rage on PS3 bad in terms of texture streaming, nor as awful as something like the PS3 version of Shadow of Mordor. It seems certainly playable. The most distracting thing for me was the half rate animation of distant characters, but that's been there since the RE2 remake. I'd probably still play it on PS4, though I wouldn't buy it at a high price.
I'm playing the Switch port of the original! I did have the original on pre order when it launched on GameCube, so far with the new version I've only played the demo on PS4.
I subbed to PS Plus with the discount for one month, so going to give Stray a go. Also downloaded the Ridge Racer retro titles to see how good the emulation is.
Recently bought a Switch Pro controller and found it much more accurate for GoldenEye on the Switch, so might replay a few classic levels. Retro wise, picked up the arcade archives version of The New Zealand Story and the SNK 40th Anniversary collection, which works great in Tate mode on the Switch for a lot of the titles.
Nice, but they really should add the Master System versions for the higher resolution where available. Sonic 2 particular suffers on Game Gear as its too zoomed in, the first boss is rendered far more difficult as a result. The original GG Sonic is good though, a far better Master System port than the sequel. Origins also still needs some better screen filters.
@Ambassador_Kong If I recall, Type 4 has a dithered look to its graphics, which was fine on a CRT, but doesn't look so great when scaled up and presented in HD.
PS1 RE has a weird glitch on PS4 where you can actually notice the 3D elements of the graphics upscale from a lower resolution for a few frames everytime you enter a new screen.
As a non subscriber, thought I'd check if I could download Type 4 as owned as the game as a PS1 classic on PS3 / PSP, but no. Seems strange as its very selective, I was able to download the PS1 Abe games and PS1 Resident Evil from owning them digitally on PS3, but not Ridge Racer. Shame, but I can still play it on PS3.

Re: Resident Evil 4 Remake on PS4 Is Why Cross-Gen Needs to End
The PS4 demo seemed OK, it's not Rage on PS3 bad in terms of texture streaming, nor as awful as something like the PS3 version of Shadow of Mordor. It seems certainly playable. The most distracting thing for me was the half rate animation of distant characters, but that's been there since the RE2 remake. I'd probably still play it on PS4, though I wouldn't buy it at a high price.
Re: Poll: Are You Playing Resident Evil 4 Remake?
I'm playing the Switch port of the original! I did have the original on pre order when it launched on GameCube, so far with the new version I've only played the demo on PS4.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 469
Re: Sonic Origins Plus Officially Announced, Adds Game Gear Titles and More in June
Re: 17 More PS Plus Extra, Premium Games Available Now on PS5, PS4
@Ambassador_Kong If I recall, Type 4 has a dithered look to its graphics, which was fine on a CRT, but doesn't look so great when scaled up and presented in HD.
PS1 RE has a weird glitch on PS4 where you can actually notice the 3D elements of the graphics upscale from a lower resolution for a few frames everytime you enter a new screen.
Re: 17 More PS Plus Extra, Premium Games Available Now on PS5, PS4
As a non subscriber, thought I'd check if I could download Type 4 as owned as the game as a PS1 classic on PS3 / PSP, but no. Seems strange as its very selective, I was able to download the PS1 Abe games and PS1 Resident Evil from owning them digitally on PS3, but not Ridge Racer. Shame, but I can still play it on PS3.
