Re: Game of the Year: #7 - Sonic Frontiers

Ristar24

I bought on PS4 and the irregular frame pacing in addition to the 30fps just took the fun out of the game. Got to a part where I was fighting a large enemy on the first island and the weird physics, fast motion and bad frame rate, made success feel more like luck than skill. It also all felt a bit aimless. I've not gone back to the game, maybe if I get a PS5 at some point will try again with improved performance, am sure will be better to play.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Xmas 2022 Edition

Ristar24

Been playing 'Legends of Amberland: the Forgotten Crown' over on Switch. Came across this on a website which listed first person, grid based, dungeon crawlers as its a genre I enjoy, which is less popular these days. Had on my wish list for a sale. It's a great little streamlined, retro style game.

Also playing some good old Wreckfest and perhaps some Xenoblade 3, or might run through the Christmas stages in Great Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams.

When not working, will be 'playing' the Super Castlevania IV soundtrack on vinyl I picked up last week. Might revisit the game too, it's one of my favourites. Also been going back to Need for Speed Hot Persuit Remastered. I never did complete it on PS3, but got back into the remastered version recently, it's actually a really challenging racer. Also part way through a new play through of Alien Isolation, such a great game.

Re: The Last of Us: Part I (PS5) - A Better, More Beautiful Remake of a Modern Classic

Ristar24

I remember pre ordering on PS3, the game at the time I thought was outstanding. I played it properly once though, as felt almost like a film, a proper narrative journey which integrated gameplay in a way that was probably more successfully than I'd seen in a video game before. It does seem a bit odd that Naughty Dog are still remaking the same game, its not something I'd seek out a PS5 for at this point, though I can appreciate the work that's gone into it. I didn't really like the look of the sequel, just seemed so bleak, so I gave it a miss.

Re: PS5 Is the Only Console Getting Price Rise, Microsoft and Nintendo Have 'No Plans'

Ristar24

@Ralizah Yes, its really up to individuals if they choose to buy the PS5 at this price. I was interested in the console, but as time has gone on, the initial hype has faded. The higher cost will deter me further. I really liked the PS3 and PS4, but the Switch Lite really got me back into Nintendo. After growing a decent digital Library, the OLED Switch was my next console. Its a very unique product and retro games look great on that OLED screen. At this point Sony have pretty much lost my custom, as I'm mostly buying games on Switch and even let my PS+ expire, moving to NSO. Nintendo really did make the Vita 2 I was looking for.

Re: PS5 Is the Only Console Getting Price Rise, Microsoft and Nintendo Have 'No Plans'

Ristar24

@Ralizah I agree with you there. I own the Lite and am really enjoying the Switch, so I had the two options for the docked console. Including the Lite, they have 3 tiers of price and functionality. Quite different to increasing the price of an existing console with no revisions. I can't recall a console increasing it's price in this way ever before, though I realise these times are somewhat unprecedented, generally.

If people are happy to pay, its their choice of course, for me, I don't see myself buying a PS5 for some time now. Though thinking about it, most of the actual PS5s I had seen for sale we're already boosted above this RRP, as they were only available as bundles.

Re: Poll: Is PS Plus Premium Good Enough?

Ristar24

I let my PS sub expire, and ended up going for Nintendo Switch Online with the N64 games included, as a 'classic' games service, its actually pretty decent now. Wave Race is getting added this week. I don't have a PS5, I might sub if I buy one. I do like that you can at least buy the PS1 classics on PlayStation, and was good to get some PS1 games back on PS4 'for free' as I bought them on PS3.

Re: Random: Can Sony Topple SEGA and Nintendo? Classic BBC Report Investigates

Ristar24

From a UK perspective looking back, those early PlayStation games made a big difference. Seeing Daytona on the Saturn next to Ridge Racer or Destruction Derby, or Virtua Fighter next to Tekken, the PlayStation looked far superior. When Psygnosis games came to Saturn, they looked far worst. I was a Saturn owner myself (still have my collection), but by the time SEGA got great ports of SEGA Rally and Virtua Fighter 2 out (I have fond memories of playing the arcade versions in the London Trocadero), it was already too late. PlayStation truely had captured essence of the 90s, the PlayStation felt like the true sucessor to the Mega Drive. I was importing Metal Slug and SNK and Capcom Fighters on my Saturn, but stuff like Resident Evil 2 was ground breaking over on PlayStation. Was an interesting period of gaming, no doubt.

We were being overcharged though as they say, Street Fighter 2 on the Mega Drive was £60 at retail back then, I think, I remember seeing Virtua Racing for £70, in the mid 90s!

Re: Soapbox: No Free PS5 Upgrade for Persona 5 Royal Is an Insult to Fans and the Game Itself

Ristar24

@Titntin I kind of have this view too. Backwards compatibility means you can still play your PS4 version on the new console I think, which is good and should certainly be expected. Its nice to get an 'upgrade', but I don't see the outrage, as you can still play the version you own on the new console.

I guess part of the issue is that consoles dont let you scale your game as a PC would, to your hardware, but consoles never gave you a 'free' upgrade. I owned Street Fighter 2 on the Mega Drive, but had to buy the Saturn port.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 435

Ristar24

Been playing some of the Nintendo Switch Online retro games, Mega Man: The Wily Wars and Zero Wing were recently added to the Mega Drive collection and with the N64 emulation improved, I decided to sub on the Switch Lite. Also still playing Sonic Origins, Final Vendetta (which has a new patch addressing some of the initial difficulty complaints), and Tutles Re-Shelled.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 434

Ristar24

Picked up the port of Zero Tolerance from the Mega Drive, replaying that. The graphics and design are very basic, but I still find the game has a unique atmosphere. Playing the original and will then move onto the included new sequel. Also revisiting Wreckfest on my Switch Lite, it's a very impressive port for a handheld console.

Re: Atari 50th: The Anniversary Celebration Brings 90 Classics to PS5, PS4 Later This Year

Ristar24

'The fun is back, oh yes siree, it's the 2600 from Atari', I still remember the advertising jingle for that one. I have the Evercade Lynx compilation and one of the other Atari carts, that added some 7800 games. Jaguar though, interesting. The woodgrain 2600 was the first videogame console I ever played back in the early 80s, was amazed to be able to control something on a TV screen.

Re: Mini Review: Wonder Boy Collection (PS4) - Two Arcade and Two Mega Drive Games, But Questionable Value

Ristar24

@JamieO No idea how I managed to beat the arcade version, I do remember it felt partially like luck though to be honest. I like how so many Master System games have that hidden FM soundtrack too, that we never knew about back in the day! I cant remember if I still have the cartridge, a lot of my older games are boxed up. I feel the Wonder Boy collection is a missed oppertunity digitally, there should be more in there. Kind of like Sonic Origins, I'm certainly enjoying the improvements, but Sonic 1 and 2 on the Master System would have been great bonuses to the collection.

I first played the original Wonder Boy on the C64, its a good port I still enjoy. Dragon's Trap on the Mater System is probably still my favouite in the series.

Re: Mini Review: Wonder Boy Collection (PS4) - Two Arcade and Two Mega Drive Games, But Questionable Value

Ristar24

Hi @JamieO I have somehow completed the arcade version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, back on the Wii VC, it was quite a challenge and you couldn't really use save states there either, not sure I could complete the game twice, ha! I've played the Master System version, but never got around to completing it, its a nice version though, with full screen graphics and a nice FM soundtrack, if you have the means to play it!

Re: Sonic Origins (PS5) - The Genesis of SEGA's Mascot Revisited with Style

Ristar24

The original game is still my favourite, even though I had the 2nd game when it was released. Sonic 2 really put speed over platforming and for me, it was lacking something compared to the original. Sonic 3 I played a few years later and I never liked the art quite as much as the first two. I'm not nostalgic for the original Sonic 3 music either, as I first played it on Sonic Jam, so be interesed to hear the new tunes. I really would have liked to see the Master System games here, was playing Sonic on the Master System the other day, it's still fun and I like the original zones and 8-bit tunes. Even so, looks to be a good collection so I'll be picking it up, probably on Switch initially.

Re: Sonic Frontiers Director Defines 'Open Zone', Will Take Between 20-30 Hours to Beat

Ristar24

Will depend how well the two are integrated, if it feels like a massive open space with bits of a more structured level stuck in there, it may feel a bit random. Be interesting to see how the player is provided direction. In a sense, Shadow of the Colosus did this, if the Colosi are considered 'stages' with specific solutions. Though in that game direction was provided ultimately by the use of an arrow for the player to follow. I guess it's an attempt to evolve the original Sonic Adventure's distinct Adventure field / Action stage gameplay into a single whole. Sounds interesting as a concept.

Re: Street Fighter 2 Is Free for All PS5, PS4 Players Right Now

Ristar24

Ha yes, how many times have I bought the various versions of this game, I've lost count, the Japanese Capcom Generations version on the Saturn may still be my favourite offline version. Still, nice to have this version for free on PS4, thanks for the heads up! I remember my parents buying me Special Champion Edition and a 6 button controller for my Mega Drive, I think the game alone cost about £60 at the time, but I still have the cart (and the pad still works), so decent value for money over 30 years or so.

Re: Great News! PS1 Games on PS Plus Premium Are 60Hz NTSC Versions

Ristar24

If we recieve 50Hz versions in Europe, I will not be considering subscribing. It's not just that they are 50Hz, but that they are 50Hz versions forced into 60Hz, introducing frame pacing problems not present in the original PAL versions, as the PS4 and PS5 can't output 50Hz, though the PS3 could.
