What would be nice is, if they have PS1 and PSP emulation up and running, how about allowing me to download games on those systems I own digitally from previous consoles and play them on the new console, if they are also availble in these new services. I am almost sure Sony wont do this, as you had to re-buy digital PS2 games on PS4, even if you had bought them on PS3.
The announcement of PS1, PSP and PS3 support is good, what would be great would be if I could play the games from those systems I own digitally for 'free' on PS5. It was great that if you bought a PS1 classic back in the day, it was playable on PSP, PS3, Vita and even PS TV. Most PSP digital purchases also worked on Vita. This whole subscription model for games access, I'm not a fan. I know Nintendo have taken the same approach, but I think I preferred 'old' Sony in this regard.
Its a bit rubbish that to get retro games you need the top tier, I really dont see myself paying that much. I cant remember the last time I really played a PS Plus game, I really just pay the basic amount, usually when its on sale, to play online. I'm not a fan of these games subscription service and though I play the Switch a lot, I've not subscribed there at all.
@IonMagi They could, they did selectively add some back on PS3. RE2 and RE3 were the NTSC versions. After the Playstation Classic and PS2 on PS4 I'm not optimistic they will foresee the issue this time though.
Will they resolve the 50/60Hz issue this time..? PAL PS2 on PS4 had 50Hz PAL games forced into a 60Hz display mode resulting in messed up frame pacing. PS3 could at least output a 50Hz image, so PAL PS1 and PS2 games without a 60Hz mode could run at their original refresh rate. Unless Sony can provide 60Hz versions, they wont look 'great' at all.
I dont really like Nintendo's subscription based retro access, so not too enthusiastic about this. Also, the old 50/60Hz issue will be there again, and after Sony messed that up on the Playstation Classic and the PS2 games on PS4, I'm not confident they will resolve the PAL issue this time either.
The 'over the shoulder' approach actually reminds me of the first Lego Star Wars game, which I played a many years ago on the GameCube. I'm sure there where a few stages where the camera followed your character.
When I saw you need to be online for the single player game, I pretty much decided not to buy it... even when I find a PS5. The car prices thing, even more so to be honest.
Elden Ring, I also finally played Tormented Souls as had a PS4 release, which seems a really good call back to classic survival horror style. Also realised the Switch has some Fighting Fantasy games adapted from the classic 80s adventure books by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone (found as I was browsing the sale), so playing those for some nostalic fun.
Elden Ring if I have some time, played about 6 hours and just exploring at the moment. So far I'm really impressed even though I've only fought one minor boss so far. This game really has made me dust off the PS4, even if I don't have a PS5 yet.
Glad to see the success. I'm having to play on PS4 for the moment, but as a fan of From Software's previous games I'm impressed, it's an excellent game from what I've played so far (some technical issues aside).
I feel like that's the design, you hit a seemingly brick wall and either give up, or find a way. You know it's possible. I've had to go away and come back a few times with these games over the years, but they have been some of the most compelling and challenging I've played. I know I don't have enough time to play Elden Ring properly at the moment, so have just been exploring and upping a few levels in preparation.
@Flaming_Kaiser Yeah, on a CRT too for the true experience! PS2 had poor video out though... getting a decent picture on a modern TV is not easy. The original Xbox versions were also pretty nice and work on a 360. I think these new versions are far from 'definitive', they were very poor and unfinished at launch, somewhat better now. These games deserved so much better, they also should have allowed you to maintain something closer to the original aesthetic as an option. I'm downloading the PS4 patches as out now, they are big... be interested to see how they run.
Bought digitally and started on my PS4 as cant find the new console. As a fan of From's previous games, my first impressions are it's great, but I know I won't have enough time to properly play it for a while. Maybe by the time I finally find a PS5...
They've actually fixed some of the worst framerate issues on Switch (patch is already out there). Its still buggy in ways the originals were not, but hopefully the PS4 patch will also fix the worst framerate issues, for example during the racers in SA.
Staring Elden Ring on the good old PS4 slim. I have a feeling the game would have made my launch PS4 go into jet engine mode. It's very playable on PS4, better than Dark Souls 2 on PS3. So far I am enjoying the new gameplay elements and open world approach.
Got back to Xenblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. Never finished the game on Wii, but hopefully this time. Also finally picked up ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove for less than £2 on the Switch, which seems like a fun mix of the first two games.
Well, if they make money out of it too, I guess they could. I think the last time I played a CoD game was on the Wii though, so I realise I'm not really the target market.
Well, its not good really. I don't care for Xbox trying to take the whole market to themselves with former muti-platform games, and I don't want a subscription service.
For me the Switch is a great hand held console, I have a Lite and play it a lot, just as its so convenient. Would like a PS5 but I'm just waiting until its simple to just buy one. Annoying the the pro is out of production too though, my launch PS4 broke and a while ago all I could really find as a new console was a slim.
If I do some gaming, probably be a few mins on the Switch playing the Christmas stages from 'Great Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams'... if I am feeling Nostalgia and have time, might play some of the C64 'Hollywood Pack' games I got for Christmas, many years ago.
I bought Great Giana Sisters Twisted Deams for less than a pound on Switch sale. First played the demo back on PS3 years ago, but it didn't run well there. Seems a fun little game on Switch... maybe I'll go play the C64 original again.
Also been playing Rise Race the Future and Wonderboy 3, which were also on sale, a good arcade racer and a Master System classic!
Very sad news. The impact of Destruction Derby and Wipeout at the PS1 launch was significant. I recall playing Destruction Derby at a friends house late into the evening around the console's launch, and could hardly belive the jump from my Mega Drive to what almost looked like an arcade game at home.
I still play Barbarian on my old C64 and it's still fun.
@JamieO Ah, Golden Axe I played a lot, and Streets of Rage. I bought a lot of Mega Drive games years later, when I first got into retro collecting, but they are mostly stored away these days. Good to see games like this reappear digitally.
@JamieO Thanks for the review. I still have my original Mega Drive cart. This was a budget release back in the day I think, I bought it in part as was a cheaper release! I almost made it to the end at the time as I had so few games, I played it a lot. A good game with interesting graphics and sound, I played it recently and still found it fun, but some of the stages I found a bit over long.
I think this is the point in gaming where I really no longer understand what its going on anymore, having started back with the Atari. Kind of makes me want to play some C64 games.
Just like with Switch, I'd rather have the option to buy some retro games than have to subscribe to a collection. I can't see myself paying for this, but be interested to see what they include.
I recieved one of those PlayStation emails with a limited window to potentially buy a PS5...Weirldy thought I am happy mostly playing games on the Switch Lite these days, so I didn't bother. I'll probably get one, when you can just go out and buy one.
@carlos82 Pretty much the same as me... I bought it for portable play on my Switch Lite. The resolution is low and the framerate is not great, but I've still had fun with Vice City so far. Considering the closest to a handheld version previously (not counting phone versions) was Vice City Stories (which ran pretty bad), its fairly playable. There are weird glitches though, why are cars randomly driving about in the airport! Needs more work, the games feel unfinished.
Draw distance on the remaster certainty gives it a different look, you can pretty much see to the end of of the map from any vantage point which allows a clear view. Its different certainly, I quite like it, but a 'definitive' edition should have really allowed you to play with something closer to the original style lighting.
@Weebleman Yep, and Tower Records was still about back then, and HMV of course. I remember I had Pablo Honey on cassette, so thinking back I got into Radiohead quite early.
@Weebleman I remember breaking that out of the CD! Not thought of it for years. I also remember having 'Meeting People is Easy' and '7 Television Commercials' on VHS, bought them in Our Price.
What a mess. This definitive version should have been outstanding, these games deserved far better care and attention for the final product, particularly for a supposedly 'definitive edition'.
I remember with Kid A, I think they played the enitire album on the radio when it was released. I was a big fan in the late 90s and was a pretty different sound. First I've heard of this.
With the loss of a lot of music, and I think much of the atmosphere of the original games lighting and visual design, I think calling these 'definitive' is off the mark. From what I have seen, they look based off the mobile versions, of which San Andreas was previously ported to PS3. At least the grass looks better. I'm still interested to play them, but at the current price I'm not sure at all. Might wait to see how Switch looks as at least would be portable there.
@get2sammyb I remember, I'd also heard the 360 version was better but tried it and the image quality was worst. It was PS3 with bad frame rate, or Xbox with bad image quality at the time.
Its weird GTA 4 is not on PS4, its weird the PS3 got a port of the mobile version of San Andreas. The PS2 emulation on PS4 was also pretty poor. Hoping these new versions are good.
Remeber PlayStation TV... It was actually a neat device for playing PSP and PS1 classics on the TV, even if a lot of actual Vita games weren't supported. I still have my Vita, but the Switch Lite has replaced it for me pretty much.
