Re: PS4 Spotted in Shin Megami Tensei V Datamine

Onion

Been loving the Switch version, but I'd love to see it comes to PS4/PS5 if it can run at 60fps, better draw distance, and higher resolution. I might even double dip if that turns out to be the case. Not sure why people are acting like it's unplayable on Switch, it's a little choppy in spots but it runs fine as far as I can tell. Would it run better on PS4? Probably. But it runs fine for me on Switch. Either people are exaggerating it or there's some issue with it on certain models. Likely the former.

Re: Fire Commander Is XCOM with Flames for PS5, PS4

I think this is a good idea as there aren't very many good games based on the concept. Off the top of my head I can only think of two games on the SNES that were about firefighting. If done right this could be a fun concept.

Re: A Hat in Time Doffs Its Cap at 60 Frames-Per-Second PS5 Update

Onion

It's nice to finally see this game hit 60fps. I played it on PC but I also want a console version. Sadly I hear the PS4 version is pretty choppy. Sounds like the PS5 version will be the way to go.

Now if I can just find this mythical PS5 people speak of. I've seen video evidence but I'm skeptical that such a thing exists.

Re: Soapbox: Why Do You Replay Games?

Onion

I definitely replay games all the time, often for a variety of reasons. Ranging from them being games I enjoyed enough to replay to wanting to give a game that didn't grab me another chance. With retro games, they weren't generally made to be completed a single time. They were meant to be played over and over again until you got good at them. With modern games I admit there's less incentive to replay many of them (time investment being one reason) but I still replay many of those as well. With games today having so much added content via patches it's not unusual for me to jump back into a game to check out what changed. Games like RE2 Remake are obviously meant to be replayed while something like The Last of Us doesn't offer as many incentives to replay it. Sometimes you invest so much time into a game that you become extremely skilled at it or familiar with it. I often replay games during a new release drought or while waiting anxiously on something to come out. Sometimes I'll try out new strategies or just do things differently on another playthrough. I've replayed Persona 5 about 3 times now and I'll often try new things to make the game more challenging or see what new ways I can find to break the difficulty. Maybe try out other party members.

With backlogs and everything though I get why some gamers don't replay things. Some people don't mind dumping hours and hours into a game they've already beaten and some would rather play something else, and that's fine. I'm constantly looking to try out new games as well, but sometimes it's nice to pick and play a familiar game.

Re: Cyberpunk 2077: Best Character Builds for V

Onion

I went with handguns, reflexes, and cool for my first run and it's a pretty powerful combo. You can stack it with crits and do ridiculous damage numbers with stealth headshots. Was able to clear most enemy outposts without being seen, and when they did see me, I just swapped to a non-silenced pistol and wiped 'em out. Pistols are crazy in this game.

Might try my hand at something akin to the Cyborg Ninja build listed on here for my 2nd run. You can get a good katana early on and make it last you pretty much the whole game, apparently.

Re: Soapbox: I'm Really Enjoying Cyberpunk 2077

Onion

I've been loving the game so far as well with not many glitches to speak of. I have a crash about every 3-6 hours it seems but that's about it. Seen a few T-posed NPCs and a few things like that. I've seen far worse to be honest. So far the buggiest game I ever played was Assassin's Creed 3 before it got a few patches. Maybe Fallout New Vegas. Both were pretty glitchy.

I'm less bothered by the technical issues and more bothered by how much seems to be missing from the game. Looking at the trailers and then the released product is like night and day. So much from the game's trailers and screenshots are just not there. The monorail system was taken out, the Corpo lifepath seems to be completely unfinished and is basically a montage, the Flathead has been reduced to a mission companion whereas before it was supposed to be an actual thing with a skill tree, wallrunning and some kind of grappling hook thing was taken out, the monowire is completely nerfed as it was originally meant to be capable of lashing out and hacking things from a distance, third person cutcenes... the list just goes on and on. I mean, even the way things play out in the trailers doesn't match what happens in the finished product at all. Like the trailer that shows Dex screwing V over and then meeting Johnny. There's stuff that goes down in that trailer that never happens in the game at all.

All things considered though, I've already dumped about 70 hours into the game and I'm loving it, but man, it does not live up to what was promised. CDPR hyped it up to be a "living world you can immerse yourself in", yet that's not the case at all. Every aspect of the game just feels neutered and watered down in comparison to what was promised.

Re: Ubisoft Shoves XP Boosting Microtransaction into Assassin's Creed Valhalla a Month After Launch

Onion

@riccyb0y

I don't know how it affects this particular game because I haven't played that much of it, but as far as I know the game is very light on grinding as it is. I played about 10 hours of it and never really found the need to grind but I don't know if that changes late in the game or not. I would wager that in this case, no, the game did not suffer. If we start seeing XP rates dropping in a later patch, then yeah that's really bad and any amount of outrage is justified. In the current state though it feels like a completely optional and pointless addition. Certainly nothing to get angry about especially when there are much worse examples of MTX.

@Tulio517

I'm only aware of them removing the MTX because of fan backlash. If they admitted to it affecting the game balance I don't remember it. I went back to it recently to see how the changes impacted the game and I honestly couldn't tell any difference. Supposedly the endgame has less sieges now and certain loot is now awarded for clearing stuff.

Re: Ubisoft Shoves XP Boosting Microtransaction into Assassin's Creed Valhalla a Month After Launch

Onion

Oh are we taking a break from hating on Cyberpunk and CDPR today? Guess it's Ubisoft's turn to be the pinata today, lulz.

@AhmadSumadi @jmac1686

Honestly this is how I've always viewed most microtransactions. While some publishers can get really predatory about it, I think in most cases it's just something for people who have more money than time (which is often the case) to buy if they want it or something people just buy for the hell of it. The first time I ever saw this was with Tales of Vesperia and I thought "wow I'd never buy that, I guess that's for people who don't have time to get all the titles and such" and never really thought it was anything to get angry over. Never really understood why DLC and MTX are something to get "outraged" about and most of the time I don't pay any attention to it. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Most publishers don't force you in any way. I get that it looks greedy but if there's people out there who want it, then why not? Smartphone games do this all the time and I never hear a peep about it, seems to be mostly console gamers who get up in the air about it. I remember people got particularly outraged about Shadow of War having lootboxes and I was just like, why? Why does anyone care? I played through the game just fine without 'em. The most amusing instance I remember of people being agitated about this was when Mega Man 9 offered Protoman for 1 dollar and people online were losing it. Come on guys, a dollar, really? You're that cheap and petty that a dollar DLC is setting you off? Luckily I think we're a bit passed that now, don't really see as much real hate for DLC and MTX anymore. At least, not on the level I had seen it in the past. in the case of Valhalla, most people are like "Oh that Ubisoft!" and move on. Releasing MTX a month or so down the line looks kinda sneaky (CTR Nitro Fueled in particular) but if people didn't get their panties in such a twist about MTX in the first place, maybe publishers wouldn't resort to sneaking them in like that. Or then again maybe they would. I don't know, I'm just an onion.

TLDR people can buy what they want, I don't care.

Re: Fans Wonder if PS4 Pro Has Been Discontinued

Onion

Got my PS4 Pro last year on a sale. Saved 100 dollars on it and at that price I was pretty happy with it. Rather than discontinue it, they should just drop the price. Otherwise the Pro sits in an odd spot where it's too expensive to be much use as a budget console or an entry point.

Re: Cost of Fixing Cyberpunk 2077 Irrelevant, Says CD Projekt RED

Onion

Glad to see there's still some sane and reasonable people left in the comments section. Since launch, I've felt like the entire world wants to see this game and CDPR burn at the stake. Meanwhile here I am just enjoying the game. If you pay attention to twitter and the rest of the internet, you're led to believe this game is the worst thing to happen to 2020 since Covid 19. Not trying to excuse the glitches or the general mismanagement of the game of course, they could have handled this game's launch way better. While I've had precious few glitches or crashes (none of them serious), I know that the game is glitchy. This is hardly new though. Fallout New Vegas is one of my favorite Fallout games and it was nigh unplayable at launch. Ark, No Man's Sky, Assassin's Creed Unity, etc. The list just goes on. It's unfortunate when these things happen but at the end o the day I think people need to dial back their expectations and remember this is just a game and not some personal slight against them. I'm hoping that CDPR will continue to iron out the kinks and maybe even add some of the cut content back in either through free patches or DLC.

Despite the glitches and jank, I've been having a blast with this game. People are entitled to have whatever opinion they want but I think some of the reactions I've seen are a tad extreme. I get the feeling a lot of people were just waiting for the first sign of blood before descending on it like vultures. A lot of people were already saying it was going to be bad before it even came out. Public opinion nosedived pretty hard after the latest delay, so I feel like a lot of the hate actually started there. I've been playing on PS4 Pro and a friend of mind is playing on PC, we've been having fun exchanging stories and information. There's a lot of cool loot hidden in the game's world if you scope it out. I'm also loving the narrative and how well designed many of the side gigs are, some of which gave me a good laugh (Flaming Crotch Man for example). Johnny is a pretty enjoyable character and his banter with V can add a lot of personality to the game. I also appreciate that like Fallout New Vegas, my stat choices and lifepath actually matter and come up constantly in conversations. There can be a bit of open world bloat however, especially if you do all the NCPD side stuff like solving crimes and assaults.

I sincerely hope CDPR can turn things around and improve the experience on PC and consoles, maybe then more people will give the game a chance and my twitter, discord, etc can stop exploding with hatred from every corner of the internet. I doubt it but you never know. An onion can hope.

Re: Soapbox: I've Missed the Feeling of Having a Backlog

Onion

I've never looked it as having a backlog so much as having a bunch of games I'm interested in playing. Whether or not I actually play them is another story, but I don't really feel bothered by it. I usually get around to them at some point or another, though this sometimes bites me in the onion such as with Gravity Rush 2 where I bought it on sale and just let it sit until the online functionality was taken out. But generally it's not a problem. I'm not going to let a few games I haven't had a chance to jump into yet stop me from enjoying a new release. When Cyberpunk 2077 comes out, all the games I haven't had a chance to play yet can go straight to hell.

Re: PS5's Small Performance Advantages Over Xbox Series X Prompt Microsoft Statement

Onion

The sad part is that John at Digital Foundry is catching flak about this on his Twitter, with people basically accusing him and DF of "fanning the flames" and trying to nitpick every little thing he says. Like the author of this article points out, if you need DF to help you tell a few pixels apart, it really doesn't matter. I love DF for the fact they go into the technical side of gaming that my onion brain can't comprehend, but people using DF's videos as ammo in their console wars are pathetic trolls. DF just report what they find, there's no hidden agenda or bias.

With that being said, I'm a bit concerned about these performance issues myself. I was leaning towards getting a Series X but hearing reports of PS5 actually running games a bit better has me leaning towards PS5. it sucks being on the fence sometimes. Both consoles look pretty tempting for me, so I guess I'll stick it out a while and see how things develop.

Re: Soapbox: The Most Frustrating Thing About Enthusiast Gamers

Onion

Honestly this is a really interesting write-up and it asks some great questions. Bringing up the Wii was a great comparison too, as I remember lots of people supposedly in the "hardcore" crowd completely dismissing the console, calling it a "toy" and so on. I've been gaming since I was 4 years old I'm now in my 30s and I haven't stopped. I don't know if that's considered "hardcore" or not, but I personally had a lot of fun with the Wii and some of my favorite games have been on the Wii. Of course, liking the Wii was a fast way to quickly get written off as "casual", regardless of your background in gaming. I actually still play the Wii even today and I'm still discovering really neat games on it.

I also really enjoy The Sims games, even though I'm also skilled enough to play and beat games like Contra, Ghosts n Goblins, etc.. but simply liking The Sims would be enough to be written off as casual. Gamers have a tendency to gatekeep for reasons I don't understand, and being part of both the retro and modern gaming community, I see a lot of it from both sides.

On that note, I see a lot of immature gamers on other sites bash old school games that I'm fairly sure they've never even played based purely on the fact they're from a certain era of gaming. The most commonly mocked apparently being the Atari 2600. I don't know where all the hate for the Atari 2600 came from but I still love me some Space Invaders, Space Jockey, etc.

Someone above mentioned that it may stem from people who stick to the games they know best and I think that could be true. I don't know what type of gamer criteria I fall into but I enjoy nothing more than trying new games I've played before. For this reason I'm a big fan of import games because they tend to be the most interesting or unusual. With the NES being my favorite console, I tend to be the most willing to explore new ventures on that console, some great discoveries I've made being games like Panic Restaurant, Power Blade 1 and 2, Ufouria, Cocoron, etc. Of course, you have a lot of people who will turn their noses up at games like that and I can't count how many times now I've brought up a neat game I've discovered, only to have someone dismiss it with "I'll just stick to Mario 3/Zelda/Mega Man/Castlevania. For example I mentioned how Holy Diver is a great little Castlevania-like import and my suggestion was shot down immediately with "I'll just stick to Castlevania 3". There's a real lack of open mindedness in gaming for sure.

In the case of Death Stranding, people forget that Kojima was once met with skepticism before with the Metal gear franchise. He suggested a game where you avoid conflict rather than engage in it and people thought he was crazy. Guess what, Metal Gear became a massive franchise. I'm not saying this will be the case with Death Stranding, but I think it's important to keep an open mind and give the game a chance. I didn't think I would like Journey when it was recommended to me, but I kinda liked it. It was different and unique. Since then I've played other unique experiences like Flower and I'm looking forward to Bee Simulator coming out soon. I could see myself playing Death Stranding at some point as well and maybe enjoying it, maybe not. It'll be interesting to see how people react once the game is actually in the hands of gamers.

Sorry for the long post, I just had a lot to say.

Re: The Witcher 3 Dev CD Projekt Red Hates Fetch Quests Just as Much as You Do

Pretty sure I fetched quite a few things for people in The Witcher 3, unless I'm misunderstanding their definition of a fetch quest. I will say Witcher 3 had some of the more interesting quest types I've played in an RPG, so there's that. Their side quests are engaging enough that even when I AM fetching something, I don't really feel like I am.

Re: GreedFall - Spiders' Best Game Is on the Cusp of RPG Greatness

Great review, but it looks like the writer spent a lot of time having to defend or excuse the game's flaws. All in all it looks like a very average game, which is understandably the toughest kind to review because one wrongly worded paragraph could easily scare off potential buyers or give the wrong impression. I think this would go well with Divinity 2 and Outerworlds when I decide to scoop up some PS4 RPGs.

Re: Streets of Rage 4 Is Looking Like a Seriously Superb Sequel

I still don't really like the new character, but to be fair I didn't like Skate that much either. On the other hand, seeing an older Skate would have been cool. Feels like a lost opportunity. DLC perhaps? Seems like they'll do anything to avoid bringing Adam back as a playable character, but that's par the course for SoR games. Almost to the point of being a running joke.

That aside, yeah this audio is awful. I want to hear the music!

Re: RAD – Mutant Roguelike Madness in a Dystopian Future

Not sure why "lack of multiplayer" is cited as a flaw. Most games in the genre I've played lacked any significant form of multiplayer. Unless one version has it and one version does, I can't see that as a flaw. Not every game needs to have mutliplayer.

That said, this game looks rad!

Re: Deleted Age Rating Suggests DOOM 64 Is Coming to PS4

Onion

This was honestly my favorite Doom game growing up and I absolutely loved the soundtrack. Some of the most haunting tunes I ever heard and it captures the essence of Doom 64 perfectly. On PC I never found Doom to be very scary, but Doom 64 was a different story. The Dark Citadel, oh man. That level was something else.

I was really happy when about 5 years ago, I found a copy just sitting in the box at a flea market for 15 dollars, but I'd gladly buy it again for PS4 or Switch just to play it on my HD TV.
