PlayStation boss Jim Ryan didn’t have much to say during his short speech at CES 2021 this week, but nevertheless, we’ve embedded his segment above for you. As previously reported, he teased more upcoming film and television projects based on first-party properties, and also reiterated that the PlayStation 5 was the biggest console launch of all time.
Outside of that, the bigwig simply reiterated that the organisation is committed to telling stories, and it aims to bring a variety of different experiences to the PS5, through both its first-party teams and publishing partners. Business as usual, then, but we’re looking forward to what the months ahead bring.

One day I may witness such a wonderful machine in person 😂 I swear this thing is like a unicorn. I’ve seen pictures of it...but do they exist?
Get mine Friday - was lucky to get it on Bestbuy.com the other day. Downloaded the HotStock app that alerted me when it was available. Make sure to have your account set up and ready to order on each of the retail sites ahead of time.
It would be nice if he spent time reflecting on all of the people who want to buy a PS5 but aren't able to. Total silence on that front from everyone at Sony. Its almost trolling for them to use the slogan "Play Has No Limits" for a console that isn't available anywhere.
"We'd like to thank each and every one of you scalpers from turning a video game console into the sought after Holy Grail to end 2020 by charging 3 or even 4 times above the general MSRP. Oh and to the 15 people who actually got a console hi I guess"
I still can't get one so everything he says that isn't related to me getting one is simply white noise mixed in with farts 🤷
Glad I initially thought of getting one in 2022. I probably wouldn't have gotten one.
Can't wait to be 2022 and opening it. The backlog will be HUUUUUGE
I’ve all but lost interest in getting one now. Pavlovian conditioning in practice. Actually - it’s more like progressive unconditioning as a result of experimental extinction due to the continued repeated stimulus of PS5 news with no end reward of being able to obtain a PS5. So as a Pavlovian dog, I have ceased to salivate anymore at the empty ringing of the PS5 bell.
It’s real... and it’s spectacular!
Just got the platinum trophy for Astro’s Playroom and I actually enjoyed it so much I’m thinking about trying another platformer (which I never play). This is the first console I’ve ever got day 1 and I’d say it’s an A+ so far
I'm having trouble understanding how a console release can be considered the most successful ever when so many would-be consumers (self included) can't gain access to your wonderful product.
@Th3solution
I, too, find myself lacking in spittle.
Biggest console launch of all time is mighty impressive 😃
@TheFrenchiestFry @Thwomp_Stomper I don't think $500 ps5 exist 😂
It’s certainly isn’t apparent in Australia, these things have been sold out since launch and there is ZERO word of when more are becoming available.
I’ve reached the point where I’m actively pretending it doesn’t exist and playing stuff I already have on PS4. No choice!!!
@Arnna @LiterallyDoNotCare Just think of all the ps5 games discount when we finally able to buy it 😃
I got mine the day after Thanksgiving at Meijer. I waited in a queue for 5 hours before I was able to purchase it. I was surprised when they called me about 6 hours later telling me it was ready to pick up.
I gave up on getting on. Till I can walk into Walmart and have the cash, I just don't care. Plus the $70 price for games has just not care for video games anymore.
So many people whining here because not everyone can get a PS5 and meanwhile me who remembers that the Wii was almost impossible to get even 1 year later in 2007 and there wasnt even a pandemic at that time. Its a Console launch, its normal.
Keep your eyes open guys. There is supposed to be more stock this week.
I see the Pulse headset is available now on Amazon uk but overpriced so I'll wait till the price is right.
@ScottyG I'm the same. Got Sackboy because I wanted more quick light fun, platforming. Hasn't disappointed, especially multiplayer with the kids.
I knew it would sell out because the PS4 sold out at launch too iirc. Plus, we’re in the midst of a global pandemic.
Is it just me or does it feel like only one console launched at the end of last year? I haven’t heard a single person mention ‘the other console’. I know they’re sold out too but all of the online chatter seems to be about PS5. Very strange.
If scalpers and stock was not an issue i wonder how many PS5 would of been sold?
The ps5 is awsome it loads quick it plays games better you can jump from game to game I’ve got a ps4 pro I haven’t touched it since😎😁😳
How do the sales of the games compare? Wondering if the increase in price has reduced initial game sales.
@IonMagus Never happened to me, and I've been on several day ones (Nintendo, Sony and MS). The shortage is in this case is worldwide, and I think Sony is just marketing its way out of the fact that this hasn't been a successful launch at all (especially considering that so many people have been left empty-handed). Nintendo may be the only company that was really successful throughout the pandemic. And wait for them to launch the Pro model, I guess around xmas 21.
@ScottyG Sackboy's great but there's also the Crash trilogy on the PS Plus Collection - those games are not easy though
@Beetoe PS5 is the most successful launch for a console ever according to the sales numbers of multiple sources, are you high? The Switch was just as hard to get for months worldwide with pre-orders selling out in minutes and there was no pandemic and so was the Wii far into 2007 (yes, worldwide. Look up old articles). And in the beginning of 2020 even Nintendo couldnt make enough Switch consoles bc of Chip shortage since China was in lockdown and sales dropped because of that. You can look this up too
@Zombie9ers Congrats dude. Welcome.
Must be nice working here putting out 2-3 paragraph articles with links. Money for old rope. Where do I apply?
@ScottyG As @Voltan mentioned Sackboy is really good. I've been playing it through solo or with the family at various different times using local coop. There's now network coop too and definitely something for everyone. The earlier levels are great for the kids to get them into it without giving them too much grief and the later levels can be a real challenge even for the adults. I'm definitely going for the platinum!
@IonMagus Nintendo have gone on record many times stating how they purposefully create artificial demand at the launch of their new consoles.
@JJ2 Had to check after your comment as the headset is all I am after now (my Gold headset v.2 is brilliant but I want these), £180 is criminal I do hope when the console comes back the accessories do too!
@Voltan the Crash Trilogy is a walk in the park compared to Crash 4. Those final 2-3 dimensions are not fun - I almost gave up. I don’t mind difficult games when the challenge is fair but it feels like the game is actively working against you. It wants you to fail. Infuriating 🤣
Impressive considering the launch stock shortages that make Switch's from way back when look tame. Otherwise, not surprising. Even PS4 had a good start, but compared to it, PS5 boasts gameplay perks outside the new controller, backward compatibility and a launch year full of lockdowns that turned many extra heads to video gaming for a while. RIP console Remote Play, though - the PS4 app notwithstanding.😅
@Th3solution hell even an xbox series x is temping me, i might abandon the playstation brand after decades..patience isn't my game..i have an LG oled TV with no next gen console to warm it.
I’m waiting until they are available and easy to walk into a store and buy. All this online nonsense with scalpers and having literally minutes to snap one up is a joke.
I’m happy to wait anyway, there’s hardly anything exciting on either system yet but I’m working my way through Microsoft’s back catalogue on gamepass for now, that’s keeping me busy.
@zebric21 that’s cool and all, the Series X is a good bit of kit but also pretty damn hard to get hold of also lol.
Would like to see how many launch titles were sold. Not holding my breath Jim, eh?
Sony really need to get stock of PS5 to the UK.
I get the feeling and hear some gamers are getting bored of waiting and buying Nintendo Switch and Series x or even series s instead.
Game had stock of both switch and series x yesterday and they went in minutes of going live.
Well I guess Sony is helping their competitors at least.
@IonMagus
no not really this is very different as mentioned Nintendo create artificial demand for the wii and have stated this many times.
might just be me but just dont like Jim Ryan comes of as a dodgy used car sales man. see they saying nothing of software sales
instead of patting themselves on the back Sony should be keep is upto date with stock and tryng to get more consoles out
@zebric21
You cant find the series X too though i know i tryed...
@Gaming365247
but it has had a restocks granted they sold out very quickly and been a handful of consoles but nothing from sony
@IonMagus Not high at all, I just don't buy into all the hype.
@Fenbops
Yup this what i'm doing now. This online only business is only helping the bots and scalpers. Imagine walking into to your local store with limit one per coustmer and walking out with your shiny new console. Some day soon.
Fewer types of experiences since mid way through last gen unfortunately. Still, I do like the focus on stories.
i bet AMD can't keep up with the demand..they have to manufacture cpus for sony microsoft and themselves..don't expect any information on this as it will panic shareholders..
I have never seen this mystical PS5 machine you speak of, but I hear it's quite glorious to behold. Those who are unworthy of its splendor have lost their eyesight upon unboxing.
I think these virus covid times have helped push console sales as well as people are traded indoors a lot and need something todo apart from netflix.
@fR_eeBritney It's a PS fansite, so....
Plenty of Series X/S talk out there, you just have to step away from any PS-centric conversation since PS fans tend to be less likely to be interested in Xbox, while Xbox fans tend to be more likely to also be interested in PS. But even still there's a fair few of us XB fans here as well. We're just more hesitant to mention it much here or face the wrath of the fanboy mafia
Plus PS is bigger in more parts of the world, and the UK is harcore PS territory, so it probably looks that way in your haunts. In the US, XB is much more visible. "Globally" PS5 is definitely the bigger launch by a good measure. In the UK I'm sure it is, too. In the US, it's definitely two big console launches.
I really dislike Jim. He states blindingly obvious things that apply to all hardware manufacturers and claims them as Sony's. He says things which blatantly aren't true. He makes bold claims using generic terms without giving any detail. A really, really unlikable man.
@Thwomp_Stomper Well I have one, so I can say with certainty, yes. Wish you luck in getting one.
Record breaking my ass. If it had been that 90% got the console and 10% are waiting. That I can admit is a success, but with something more arround the line of 50% got the console and 50% waiting, I would call that a major flop, no matter how many more consoles they sold on launch day. And for anyone doubting the split. Since Sony isnt releasing any numbers at all on how many are still waiting for consoles, it could be 10/90 for all we know.
@Fenbops @Gaming365247 I am in the same boat. I do do my rounds with the websites when I get up in the morning just to see if I can get my hands on either a Series X or a PS5, with no luck.
I think what really hurts the most about this whole thing is that there is no "go to the store early and see if it's there". At least with other console launches, there was a possibility of getting one if you were persistent.
I remember getting a Wii completely randomly in the January after launch at a Wal-Mart (I wasn't even there for a Wii at all) and there was one left.
Even with other launches. demand was still high, but at least the playing field was leveled.
I don't even feel like persistence is even the answer so long as sales continue to be online only. You have to deal with demand + bots crashing sites that the act of adding to cart and checking out is darn-near impossible.
I have simmered down on my enthusiasm of the consoles, too. I still want them, but not as excited about getting one anymore. It's not even that there is a lot of next-gen games I want to play, I honestly just want them for decreased load times and steadier framerates for the games I am playing now - after seeing videos of load times, my PS4 Pro and Xbox One X feel like dinosaurs.
I got Miles Morales for PS4 for Christmas (with a few other games on other systems) and I am trying to slowly make my way through my other games before playing in hopes I get a PS5 by then and can play the upgraded version. I am a "one and done" person, so I if I don't play it on the first go on PS5, I probably won't play it at all on PS5 - except to maybe fire it up for 5 minutes to see the improvements and then move on.
Its a beast, and things are only going to get better.
