I honestly liked this game, but I'm not in a hurry to double dip on it. For me, Black Flag was undeniably better.
I remember this game being particularly laden with glitches too. The worst one I encountered was a rare glitch where for some strange reason, I was never given the ingots needed to upgrade my gear. It was a game-breaking bug that kept me from 100%ing the game, but years later I picked it back and restarted it to get 100%.
Perhaps that experience is what's putting me off of the remaster.
Never understood why this was a problem in a game about ripping people's spinal cords out. To be fair though, I don't think the game ever really was about sex appeal. While many of the characters have a certain degree of attractiveness (ugly models aside), the main focus has always been the violence. I can't say I was ever particularly put off by a leotard or large breasts in a MK game but it never mattered, either. If I recall correctly this has been a gradual effort on NRS' part to tone down the sexuality in their games. The last game reduced breast sizes, this one is covering them up more.
Now, start pulling this crap with DoA games and we may have a problem. It's important to recognize what a game's main selling point is.
I haven't really enjoyed a DoA game much since DoA2U and DoA3 Hardcore. I didn't care for the fourth game and the 5th game has that reputation for being laden with DLC. I was really hoping 6 would be better, but it doesn't seem like it. With DoA5 now officially becoming a fairly old game, I'm hoping I can get that and all the DLC for pretty cheap. From what I've seen, the 5th one seems like it's pretty much the best one right now. Either way, I ended up springing for SC6 after getting it on sale off Amazon, so I guess I'll be playing that for a while. Hopefully DoA5 goes on sale for a good price soon.
Way too low of a score for sure. At minimum, this game deserves at least a 7 and I can say that pretty much without playing the finished version. The things the reviewer listed as "negatives" are actually positives for me and would be for anyone who is a fan of the original. This game knows it's target audience and it nailed it, in my opinion. Sadly for the PS4 though, I'm getting it for the Switch. I'm a traitor, I know. This game looks like it's perfect for it.
Spot on, I've been using my Wii as a souped up Gamecube for a while now since like most people, I'm not willing to shell out 200 dollars for a cable that outputs 480p for the GC. Using Nintendon't on my Wii, I can literally play 90% of my Gamecube library on my HDTV through the Wii's higher quality component cable. The 10% that don't work correctly work fine if I disable widescreen mode on nintendon't's settings or simply bypass Nintendon't altogether and run the disc directly. The only reason I use Nintendon't at all is to force all the games into a wide-screen that doesn't butcher the aspect ratio. Even without that software, the Will can run GC games at perfect 480p. Ask any competitive Melee player how important BC can be for some people and they'll tell you. Through some minor softmodding, the Wii U can also run GC games, giving the player access to GC, Wii, and Wii U all on one console. If BC didn't matter to people, no one would ever do this, but lots of people have.
Aside from that, look at how in-demand the 60GB PS3 model is. It's the only one (in the US at least) that runs PS1 and PS2 games and it costs far more than the later models that took away that feature. People will gladly pay the money. Hell I myself have two PS2s, one of which I use as a dedicated PS1 player because both my other PS1s are broken. It's an extremely important feature for any console's longevity. This is all on top of the fact it can potentially reduce shelf space, which someone like me can definitely appreciate because I have tons of consoles and games taking up space and sometimes it's nice to have one console that can play multiple formats. Let us all not forget that this is one of the things that helped kill the Vita since the only way to play PSP games on it was to rebuy the digital versions and it doesn't even support the entire PSP library. That's a real shame because I would have actually bought a Vita just to play Portable Ops Plus and Monster Hunter Freedom 2 with dual analog, but of course, I can't do that because neither game is supported. Brilliant work, Sony. They would have been better off not to support PSP at all on the Vita.
As far as how often it influences my purchases on new consoles.... I'll be honest and admit that it's very rare for it to actually matter, the exceptions being PS3 and Vita. I bought a PS4 knowing full well that I would not be able to play PS3 games and it just gave devs the excuse to re-release PS3 games on it as "remasters" anyway.
What I really wanted to comment on though was that copy of Valkyrie Profile in the image. Nice touch! Someone has good taste.
EDIT: Completely neglected to mention that my copy of Eternal Darkness has issues working on my GC, but works fine on my Wii. Likewise, Smash Bros Brawl won't work 90% of the time on my Wii, but works just fine on my Wii U. BC definitely comes in handy in situations like these. Not to mention that some games, like Pokemon, THRIVE on BC because having some form of access to previous gen games ensures you can carry over more of your Pokemon. Plus, my DS Lite's top screen recently broke (the hinges finally snapped) so using my 3DS to play DS games has been a real boon. As for Gameboy, the original Gameboy was never really that great in terms of visuals and the GBC and even early models of the GBA had no backlight, so here comes the GBA SP to save the day with a backlit screen and able to play Gameboy all the way up to GBA. While my Gameboy still works just fine, not having to stare at that greenish-black screen and wait for all the planets to align to get perfect lighting is huge. The GBA SP is one of my all time favorite handhelds and the primary reason I love it so much is the excellent BC is provides.
So yeah, one of the biggest bonuses I can think of right now for BC is when a console breaks. I mean sure you CAN keep your old consoles around and I'm the world's worst to have dozens of consoles all hooked up to the same TV, but sooner or later, they break or won't read a disc or something. When that happens, being able to reach out for a console you potentially already own to play the same game helps out a lot. In those cases, all the digital purchases in the world won't help you if the console they're stored on breaks.
tl;dr is BC is extremely important especially over a long period of time. That's why Microsoft tried to patch in support for it in the Xbox 360. While it may not be a driving force behind every purchase, it's still not something to easily be dismissed. Having BC can sometimes give one console the edge over another.
I'm not entirely sure why they chose a fighting game format for this, given that it didn't do so well for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game, which is an uninspired fighter with broken mechanics and odd inputs. (I still kinda like it though.) Not sure how well the SNES tournament fighter went since despite seeing copies of it everywhere, I never got a chance to try it.
I feel like this franchise would be better off being done in a Platinum Games format similar to Transformers, but that's just me.
"Toning down" the franchise would be a huge mistake and I doubt Tecmo would really be that dumb. DOA has ALWAYS been about fanservice, anyone saying otherwise has obviously not played a single DOA game. Since the very first game, DOA has made a deliberate effort to appeal to male gamers. It was one of the first fighting games to have jiggle physics implemented as a major feature and even the commercials for DOA2 and 3 were obviously geared for a male audience ("she kicks high"). The DOAX Volleyball games take this and dial it up to 11.
Don't get me wrong, there's a solid fighter underneath all the sexy (I was a big fan of DOA2) and I'm not really complaining, just pretty much stating a fact. The DOA series is known for sex appeal, it's literally part of the franchise. Changing it now would most certainly lose sales just like taking fatalities and gore out of Mortal Kombat would lose sales. There's nothing wrong with that either.
Listening to some vocal minority who most likely doesn't even play the games anyway would be a mistake. Assuming Sony doesn't censor these games, they should be as bouncy and sexy as they've always been. That's what most people buy the games for.
Yeah, for real, Mr. X is probably the least threatening enemy in the entire game. He looks imposing, but he's super easy to juke around. His punch seems to have a tiny hitbox. He makes things more annoying than difficult. I plan future playthroughs around him by making sure most of my work at the RPD is finished before opening the way out. You can also hide out in several "safe" rooms such as the STARS office, the dark room near the stairs, the Chief's Office, the secret room under the statue (best place to hide IMO), and the Clock Tower which is the ONLY hiding place on the third floor. Just go in any of those rooms and wait a moment, then go about your business. He is much more annoying on the 2nd Run as you have much less places to hide, but fortunately he doesn't trigger until you reach the STARS office which is conveniently one of the hiding places. The article is still correct though, complete those objectives and he'll go away for the most part. On the 2nd play, you definitely want to speedily grab the 3 medallions so you have one more hiding place.
Now Nemesis... he was a different story. If it's true RE3 is getting a remake, then Nemesis could be extremely interesting.
Not too surprised that the Nintendo Switch is doing so well, it's a killer console/handheld/whatever. I am a bit surprised at how well NSMBU is doing though. While I also bought the game and personally feel it's the best one in the series (obviously not counting Mario 3 or Mario World, just the New SMB games) I honestly figured it would do okay. It's doing MORE than okay, according to what I read, it finally knocked Smash Bros Ultimate out of the top sales. That's kind of impressive for a Wii U re-release.
Even more surprising is Vesperia doing better on PS4 than Switch.... I would have assumed playing it on the go would be a huge selling point. Personally though, I plan to get it on PS4 myself. While there's virtually no graphical differences, I don't know if the Switch is the best platform for a long RPG, even though it has games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 already on it and it can easily be docked for long session. I don't know, Vesperia just feels right for PS4 I guess.
If I had to guess why people are going PS4 with Vesperia, it's because a lot of Tales games release on Sony consoles so that's probably where the majority of the fanbase is. Vesperia itself was given a PS3 release in Japan.
I've been thinking the same, but it actually did go on sale here in the US for about 30% off I think? It wasn't enough to get me to bite, but it could mean the game will be price-dropping soon enough.
I've had my eye on this game for a while but I'm a bit hesitant to buy it for full price. The new dinos definitely entice me though, as this was a common complaint (no aquatic dinos).
The fact this situation even escalated as far as it did is frankly ridiculous. I guess giving customers what they actually pay for is becoming a rarity.
I love the original response they gave when asked what they were going to do about it.
This is a bit disappointing as I really wanted to see Episode Aranea, but not entirely unsurprising considering they also cancelled the offline custom character creation.
As someone who loved FFXV, I'm kinda ready for them to get off this game and move on to the FF7 remake. Every time I come back to this game, I have to download a gigantic patch. The new content is nice, but seriously, can we move on to something else now?
I can't say for sure as I'm only on chapter 4 at the moment.John behaves pretty much as I expected him to in RDR2. Jack was very bitter in RDR1 and it becomes more and more clear why he is like this once you see how John acts in RDR2.
Arthur seems to be more involved with the gang itself than John, as John apparently has a history of running out on them. The more you play the game, the more you learn the extent of this.
Jumping Flash 2 was one of the first PS1 games I ever played and played a big part in helping to hook me into the console. It's like a first person Super Mario 64 with moon jumping physics!
Still not really buying this game, not real happy with the fact all they did was chop out these games from the PSP versions and shove them at us. The fact the author of this review had to resort to using the trophies (which are admittedly hilarious) as a selling point just damages this compilation even further. As the reviewer said, it would have been nice if they had just simply included the entire Dracula X Chronicles on here, 2.5D remake included. Instead, it just looks like a cheap cash grab on Castlevania fans nostalgia and hoping to ride on the tailwind created by the anime and Simon Belmont's reveal in Smash.
This could have been a truly awesome game if they had put in more effort, but as it stands I see little reason to play this over the actual PSP game. If I get it, It'll be on sale.
Yeah this is a real issue for physical buyers and it defeats the whole purpose if buying physical in the first place. Knowing this, I'll likely just go digital for the game, preferably on a flash sale or something. I own the original PS1 games so I'm good.
I like how people are cherry-picking where Shogun ragged on the controls a bit, as if that somehow detracts enough from the game's already high score. Would it REALLY matter that much if the game got a 9/10 over 10/10? Seriously.
Besides, that's kinda par the course for Rockstar games and as Shogun said, Witcher 3 didn't control 100% perfect either. It's pretty clear that the controls weren't a damper on the overall experience.
Definitely feels like the person writing this was not a fan of the main game and has a real axe to grind. On the other hand, it does come off as a mild disappointment that they didn't try anything new and given how quickly they churned this out, I'm fairly certain they had intended for it to be in the main game.
With that said, more of the same hardly feels like a bad thing to me, so I'm down for it. Once I 100%'d the game I was still hungry for more, so I'm definitely not "probably burnt out". In fact, the new game plus mode was already all the excuse I was looking for to turn this baby on again and resume spoodering.
I'm eager to jump back into the game and more variety in the street crimes would never hurt, but I don't think I'll have time for it with RDR2 and all. I also wouldn't mind taking New game+ for a ride.
We already went a round about this a while back bro, not gonna do it again with you and flood this article with pointless and idiotic bickering. I don't like her new look, you don't mind it, no point in arguing about it when neither of us will change their mind. Claire's new look has been polarizing for a lot of people, that's kinda par the course for remakes anyway.
I'm still debating, but leaning towards physical, so it'll be nice to not have to worry about downloading anything besides maybe a patch to start playing.
Yeah I don't usually complain about patches, but with this game, it feels a little ridiculous. It's like, every single time I turn it on, I get a patch notification. It's not a major complaint for such an otherwise stellar game, but jeez. Enough already! They're gonna patch the thing till it's broken.
Okay so they're fine with showing off her arms but they're apparently too scared to put her back into her shorts where she belongs? Bah! That aside, at least give us her classic vest. I'm fine if she's wearing jeans but I still can't get over her lack of the trademark vest. Still holding out that it's an in-game unlockable.
This isn't THAT unheard of. I remember Fire Emblem: Awakening also had difficulty meeting the demands at launch, which forced me to download the digital version if I wanted to play on day 1.
How likely is it of larger chains like Best Buy and Gamestop running out? If this news persists, I may be tempted to simply go digital on this game and get a jumpstart on preloading it. I really wanna play it day 1, waiting till Nov 2nd isn't optimal.
I've never really gotten into these games, but I'm curious as to how Farming Simulator compares to Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley. My guess is that Farming Simulator discards all the charm and simplicity of the HM series in favor of being a more realistic farming experience. The trailer is kinda making me want it, though. Really digging the Life is Strange captions!
Admittedly I'm still a bit unsure of this game, despite the stellar review. My main question is, do your custom characters have plenty to do in this game? The biggest problem I had with every SC not called 3 was the fact custom characters had virtually nothing to do and no real replay value. Does the Libra of Soul mode address that issue?

Never understood why this was a problem in a game about ripping people's spinal cords out. To be fair though, I don't think the game ever really was about sex appeal. While many of the characters have a certain degree of attractiveness (ugly models aside), the main focus has always been the violence. I can't say I was ever particularly put off by a leotard or large breasts in a MK game but it never mattered, either. If I recall correctly this has been a gradual effort on NRS' part to tone down the sexuality in their games. The last game reduced breast sizes, this one is covering them up more.

Re: Jumping Flash! - Unique 90s Platforming from a First-Person Perspective
Jumping Flash 2 was one of the first PS1 games I ever played and played a big part in helping to hook me into the console. It's like a first person Super Mario 64 with moon jumping physics!
Re: Castlevania Requiem - A Compelling Collection of Two Classics
Re: Guide: Red Dead Redemption 2 Best Weapons
Been using a pair of Schofield Revolvers to get my inner Revolver Ocelot on, and these babies rule! Fully customizable, too.
Re: Spyro: Reignited Trilogy Still Requires Content Download for Second and Third Games
Yeah this is a real issue for physical buyers and it defeats the whole purpose if buying physical in the first place. Knowing this, I'll likely just go digital for the game, preferably on a flash sale or something. I own the original PS1 games so I'm good.
Re: Free Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4 Theme in PS Store
Looks like my Spider-Man theme will finally be taken down.
Re: Fans Are Fuming with Sony's Red Dead Redemption 2 Commercial
When are gamers NOT fuming?
Re: Red Dead Redemption 2 - Rockstar's Best Ever Game
I like how people are cherry-picking where Shogun ragged on the controls a bit, as if that somehow detracts enough from the game's already high score. Would it REALLY matter that much if the game got a 9/10 over 10/10? Seriously.
Besides, that's kinda par the course for Rockstar games and as Shogun said, Witcher 3 didn't control 100% perfect either. It's pretty clear that the controls weren't a damper on the overall experience.
Re: Red Dead Redemption 2 - Rockstar's Best Ever Game
My nipples are hard.
Re: Marvel's Spider-Man: The Heist - More of the Same
Definitely feels like the person writing this was not a fan of the main game and has a real axe to grind.
Re: North American PS Plus Members Can Nab inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood for Free
I would love a PS4 remaster of the Infamous games, as I missed out on them and haven't had a chance to try the PS4 Infamous games.
Re: Ni no Kuni II's First Major DLC Now Has a Name
They waited way too long to release DLC for this game... By now, most people have probably beaten it and moved on.
Re: Castlevania Requiem PS4 Trophies Have Some Pretty Great Names
@Knuckles-Fajita
Yeah, I thought literally the same thing.
Re: Red Dead Redemption 2 Will Have a Day One Patch, As You'd Expect
Day one patch? Time to boycott.
Re: New Spider-Man PS4 Trophies Reveal More About First DLC
I'm eager to jump back into the game and more variety in the street crimes would never hurt, but I don't think I'll have time for it with RDR2 and all. I also wouldn't mind taking New game+ for a ride.
More Black Cat is never a bad thing either.
Re: Claire Redfield's Military Costume Doesn't Look Particularly Practical
@Undead22
Re: Guide: SoulCalibur VI - All Characters in the Finished Game
Kinda shocked at some of the characters that didn't make the cut. I smell DLC coming...
Re: Images of Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4 Steelbook Emerge, Room for Two Discs Inside
I'm still debating, but leaning towards physical, so it'll be nice to not have to worry about downloading anything besides maybe a patch to start playing.
Re: Assassin's Creed Odyssey PS4 Patch 1.05 Brings Stability to Greece, Fixes Another Crash
Yeah I don't usually complain about patches, but with this game, it feels a little ridiculous. It's like, every single time I turn it on, I get a patch notification. It's not a major complaint for such an otherwise stellar game, but jeez. Enough already! They're gonna patch the thing till it's broken.
Re: Days Gone Delayed to Avoid Horde of New Releases on PS4
RDR2 would kill this game, so this is a smart move. On the downside, this seems like a good Halloween game to play, so I dunno.
I wasn't too interested in this game anyway, I'm waiting for reviews and see what word of mouth it gets first.
Re: Guide: Red Dead Redemption 2 FAQ - Everything You Need to Know
Oof, that 100GB sounds killer. I really need to spring for an external HDD at this point.
Re: Claire Redfield's Military Costume Doesn't Look Particularly Practical
Okay so they're fine with showing off her arms but they're apparently too scared to put her back into her shorts where she belongs? Bah! That aside, at least give us her classic vest. I'm fine if she's wearing jeans but I still can't get over her lack of the trademark vest. Still holding out that it's an in-game unlockable.
Re: Smaller Game Stores May Not Be Able to Sell Red Dead Redemption 2 Until November
Re: SoulCalibur VI - The Best Since SoulCalibur II
@ShogunRok
Oh that's good to hear. Might consider checking this game out at some point. Like everyone else, I'm a bit overwhelmed this month.
Re: Farming Simulator 19 Is a Life Is Strange Game Now
I've never really gotten into these games, but I'm curious as to how Farming Simulator compares to Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley. My guess is that Farming Simulator discards all the charm and simplicity of the HM series in favor of being a more realistic farming experience. The trailer is kinda making me want it, though. Really digging the Life is Strange captions!
Re: SoulCalibur VI - The Best Since SoulCalibur II
Admittedly I'm still a bit unsure of this game, despite the stellar review. My main question is, do your custom characters have plenty to do in this game? The biggest problem I had with every SC not called 3 was the fact custom characters had virtually nothing to do and no real replay value. Does the Libra of Soul mode address that issue?
