Even Excitebike sounds better than this. A bit of a shame, I was interested in this as a fan of Road Rash. Seems like the series and concept is doomed to dust at this point.
I'll go ahead and say it now... I actually like AC3, but I fully understand why some people hate it. That said, I agree that Black Flag and Origins take the cake. I think Ubi should let the Black Flag/Origins team handle all the AC games from now on. Those guys have proven that they can do it.
I always love how this particular site doesn't even mince words and flat-out says it like it is. No beating around the bush with this one, Sonic Forces is terrible.
Pretty much this. It comes down to Nintendo having the better overall system.
For me, I wanted a Vita. I really did, but I couldn't deal with the whole memory format thing and as others have stated, it lacked a killer app game. The closest it had to a killer app for me was Persona 4: Golden, and even that wasn't enough to convince me.
Another thing I disliked is how they ditched UMD's and then expect me to rebuy my PSP games digitally. No thanks. Worst of all, the PSP games I DO want to play on the Vita aren't on the playstation store, so... yeah. Swing and a miss, big time. Not having any Monster Hunter games or anything I cared about didn't help.
I realize none of that has much to do with the soapbox article at hand but I don't personally think much has changed. People have always wanted gaming on the go, that didn't change with the Vita, Sony just handled it poorly and I suspect no one wants to admit that. It has nothing to do with "timing" or anything of that sort, Nintendo simply did what Sony couldn't, now some Sony fans are bitter about it. Sony had a shot at it and blew it.
The Switch is simply more versatile, less expensive, has a better library, and more convenient.
Luckily we still have Sonic Mania, and I hope this game gets some seriously bad sales so Sega realizes that Mania is more in line with what consumers want, not this garbage.
That or try spending more than a year developing the game.
I'd love to see the first two games remade with better controls, graphics, etc. They were good for the time but haven't aged very well. The PSP game is supposedly excellent though.
Really never understood the hype for this game. I played it back in the day and STILL thought it was a boring as hell game. I'm with @kyleforrester87 on that I never felt particularly blown away by it. Much rather play a game with some gameplay to it, as this game was basically just a dull "climb random gigantic monster and poke it" simulator. While I know it goes deeper than that, that's basically how I feel about it.
It may be a great game, but Gods was it boring for me. I've had more fun with visual novels.
On the subject of CoD's popularity... This is something I've never fully understood, myself. I don't actually know anyone who plays CoD. I've never met a CoD fan. No community I've been part of has spoke highly of CoD... I've often wondered where this popularity it has comes from and WHO is playing it? Judging by the poll, not that many people seem to care about it. I assume they have such a small, dedicated hardcore fanbase, that they can leech off that and sustain themselves.
I'm not a CoD hater, it's just something I've noticed over the years.
As a collector who knows the value of older games, I can confirm that 20 dollars for a digital PS2 game IS a rip off. You can buy this game all day long for 15-20 dollars online. Complete in box and everything.
It's a shame because the price will most certainly detract from the sales. Just buy it online. Not only will you have a more valuable copy, but it'll cost less too. The only reason to buy this is if you really want to play the game on a PS4.
I thought pretty much the same. I agree with 8/10 but I don't get WHY it was scored as such. I don't personally fault the review, but the ratings scale itself. I think the rating system is becoming a bit arbitrary at this point. Doesn't help that you have the "8/10 or sucks" crowd out there.
@Mahe
I know, right? I was floored when I saw this on the shop while I was browsing new releases. If we got games like The Lion King and Aladdin next, that'd be the cat's toenails. (I'm saying it'd be awesome.)
Judging by what I read, only one real flaw was listed and yet the final score is only 7/10? I'm not saying the score should be higher, I'm saying the review should be more clear and concise so I, the reader, understand why the score was given the way it was. In this case, one flaw was apparently enough to dock it 3 points? Seems fishy.
@Quintumply
Thank you. It's not an issue with your writing (It's a nice review in fact) it's more of an issue with the actual score, which seems misleading after reading the review. I agree with almost everything written, including how amazing the visuals are! ?/10 rating scales are really tricky for this reason, because different people will come away with different impressions of what the score should be.
That said, Dragon's Trap is an amazing remake so 7/10 or above is definitely fair.
I don't know why folks are complaining, the fact SE is taking time to fully flesh out the game a bit more is a GOOD thing. Also people need to lay off the tired old "lol unfinished game" bit as FFXV is a finished game, nothing is left unfinished. This is just typical hyperbole from entitled gamers who don't understand how hard it was just to release this game. SE is bringing in new modes such as NG+ and others, so why the whining? Hyrule Warriors got constant level cap raises and DLC and yet that game was highly praised. SE put too much into this game NOT to keep adding to it. Between Kingsglaive, Brotherhood, and the game itself, FFXV had a massive budget. The engine for FFXV is also being used for the FF7 remake so obviously SE is going to do everything they can to keep FFXV relevant for the next few months. Some of the added content is free while some will be paid DLC. With talk of more playable characters, custom avatars, and online co-op, FFXV can only get better from here.
I personally welcome the decsion to make an already great game ever greater.
While I'm happy to see Crash is making a comeback, I really don't care for the "updated" look of his character model. The graphics are okay, but I don't see much reason to play this over the originals other than simple convenience of having all 3 games in one bundle.
I'm cautiously optimistic but as someone who owns the whole trilogy already, I'm not too sure I'd consider buying it. Great for the younger generation who might've missed out though!
I just want to say that I agree and mirror the sentiments that it is indeed a fantastic game and 8/10 is perfectly fair and reasonable. It's the best FF I've played in a long time and really does capture that sense of awe. That said, yes it does have flaws; it's not perfect, but close enough!
One thing I am somewhat baffled by is the complaints about imperial encounters. Anyone who would dismiss the entire game based on that is... being a bit silly. To begin with, they're easily dispatched. For another, you can avoid them. I mean, I've seen the dropship many times and simply outran it when I didn't feel like fighting. If they stop you car, just fight them. The combat system is brilliant anyway. Plus you can always hop onto a chocobo to avoid encounters altogether!
Good to see people are still willing to stick up for Final Fantasy 8. Saves me a lot of trouble.
With that said, I'd like to point out (though I doubt anyone cares) that the whole "Whatever" thing was never in the original Japanese version. Squall said "Sorry", not "Whatever", which is a pretty heavy contrast between being an apologetic and socially awkward person looking to keep others at bay, and just being a gigantic ass.
If your concern is that the setting is empty, then that isn't the case here at all. With 15 "Cases" that you can pursue at any time, ranging from chasing down a certain flying arsonist to eliminating the militia watchtowers, there's plenty to do in the city besides riddles. The end-game has 243 riddles to solve and they're surprisingly diverse, ranging from hacking riddlers robots to literally bring you the trophy (something I find hilarious), to disabling a bomb the riddler set in someone's noggin.
So no, that isn't a problem with this game. The only serious flaw is that the boss battles are as bad as they have ever been. As far as the city itself, it has more than enough to offer.
Gamespot are just looking to generate clickbait, as always. I wouldn't even pay them any mind.
I've never understood why some people think Asylum is better than City. I mean, it's fine if someone likes it more but to say it's better is kind of a stretch. Especially given that Asylum is more limited, shorter, worse animations, less smooth combat, etc.. The only thing it has over City are the Scarecrow scenes and maybe the Asylum itself.
As for City, the only thing I didn't like about it was that the Gotham City element didn't really feel that, it just felt like an Asylum moved into a city. Which it kinda was but still. I wanted to be able to experience Gotham City, not a deformed, sectioned off ghetto version of it.
Thankfully Arkham Knight not only has that going for it, but the addition of the Batmobile as well, so this will be day 1 for me. I don't really see why anyone would see the initial as "daylight robbery" when most of the DLC is more or less just a mild distraction from the main game. Seems kinda pointless to wait like 6 monthes or so for DLC that will likely only be entertaining for 2 hours.
@SeahorseLegs
Umm... Have you seen a single video for this game? It has plenty different about it. What do you think, that they spent nearly 4 years just copying and pasting things from the past 3 games into a new one? You make it sound like this is one of the annual Assassin's Creed releases when it couldn't be further from it.
I get tired of the whole "Day 1 _ is horrible aaaaaagh!!" logic. Guys, it's a patch. It's a bug fix. BUG FIX GOOD! Do you understand now? They increase stability. This is a good thing.
It's important to bear in mind that if the developers COULD HAVE released this on the disc, they would have! This is a pretty big bug fix, and there's a limit to how much they can cram onto a single blu-ray. More importantly, people have no idea how long it takes for a game to get released. Once a game goes gold, closing production, disc making, shipping, stocking, etc.. all take place. During this time the devs have nothing to do but plan for their next game or look for bugs to squash. Being that Rocksteady is a studio that only works on one game at a time, they went through the game with a fine tooth comb looking for things to improve. It's not as simple as "waiting a week". People need to realize this before they fire off dyslexic posts that whine about things they don't understand. The game has been in development for almost 4 years now. If they could have fixed every bug before release, they would have done so. Also people need to read the article more clearly. It doesn't just fix bugs it also adds to the game, the article plainly mentions a batman skin. Calm down.
For those who are unaware, here is what the patch actually does:
Improved Performance
Stability Fixes
New feature: Rival Points
New feature: Original Batsuit skin available to select
Support for "A Matter Of Family" additional content
General gameplay, graphical, audio, UI, and localization fixes
This is a good thing. Get a grip. Sometimes I think gamers just look for things to get outraged about.
@Riririn
DLC's not even relevant to this article. There's a difference between Day 1 DLC on the disc and Day 1 DLC that needs to be downloaded, it sounds like you're confusing the two. Also you're not being a guinea pig, just download the patch. If anyone should complain it should be those who don't have stable connections like @brendon987 stated. I have a metered internet so I can't download this patch until midnight without using my data limit, and I'm not really complaining.
@mitcHELLspawn
Not a PC gamer but eh... he kinda has a point. It does seem a bit weird to refer to 30 FPS as being smooth. I doubt anyone would notice though, this isn't really a first person shooter so the differences in framerate with a game of this type would likely be negligible. All the videos I've seen for it looked smooth.
