@MrPeanutbutterz For real. I was absolutely obsessed with Titanfall 2 for a good few months. Love that game. COD2 on 360 was also one of my first real online shooters I ever played. Still holds up to this day too.
He certainly left his mark in gaming history. That's for sure.
Absolutely tragic news. Far too young. Such a talented individual. Created some of the best/most influential shooters of all time. (Titanfall 2 is an absolute masterpiece) He also successfully led the teams involved in Battlefield's resurrection after many years of floundering.
Terrible news. My heart goes out to his family. Rest in Peace.
MK8 will probably always be the best kart racer I'll ever play but I've played it to death at this point. However MK World, while not bad...didn't click nearly as much. I didn't like the tracks nearly as much this time around.
Enter Sonic Racing Crossworlds and I've never looked back. I still wouldn't say it quite tops MK8 for me but it's probably right behind it at #2. Really enjoyable fun racer!
This makes sense since those are the rules of the competition. I have a feeling the representative for Sandfall was probably just misinformed rather than outright lying about it. It happens.
I can't say I love how quickly AI has incorporated itself into so many aspects of life but it's not going anywhere. So long as it's used responsibly and not used for nefarious reasons I just shrug my shoulders at this point. It is what it is.
No one likes working OT but sometimes it just can't be helped. They aren't running a charity here. It will have been 7 years since the last new ND release. They need to bring in money sooner or later. ND games sell very well. However, this isn't Rockstar. They need to get moving.
Yes it's true that TLOU online caused a huge amount of wasted time and money. I'd be willing to bet that's a major contributor as to why this has happened.
Well I'm happy to support Falcom. Trails is a cornerstone of what I generally play most these days. Easily among my favorite series in gaming. Hopefully the Japanese market will show up more in the future. I'd honestly be devastated if Falcom got into serious trouble.
An odd collaboration that one. This also does not bode well at all for WB Games future. I'm picturing Hogwarts Legacy 2 exclusive to the Netflix app. 🤮
I'm happy to see them do so well. The industry for the most part has become so much more disconnected on the personal level now that trade shows like E3 are either smaller in scale or gone entirely.
The Game Awards, for all its shortcomings, feels like a glimpse back to those simpler, more exciting times. I get why the industry adopted the Nintendo Direct style more but as someone who genuinely enjoyed watching E3 coverage all the time growing up, I appreciate the Game Awards providing that pleasure again. Warts and all.
@crossbit That's all fair. I can see the other side's point of view for sure. I think it just all comes down to where everyone draws the line between indie and AA or AAA. To myself, I just consider E33 to be a really big budget independent game. Nothing more and nothing less.
Had a blast with this game! Really hoping the WB drama doesn't affect the sequel. This one is basically the one bright spot WB games can point to as an undeniable success. Netflix, Paramount, or whomever owns WB would do well not to mess with it.
@wildcat_kickz 100% agree there. There are definitely some categories that could use some updates. I honestly can't stand the "Games for Impact" award. I have no idea what that means. 😅
@wildcat_kickz Fair enough. I'd still personally say it qualifies because I don't see a publishing partner as a partner in development as much as just a budgetary partner. Similar to how Kickstarter works.
I'd consider any of the many games made through Kickstarter to be independent even though one could technically argue that the backers of the project in that case almost acts in a similar fashion to a publishing partner. The development of the game is 'dependent' on the money coming from backers just like E33 depended on the money coming from Kepler.
It's all semantics though at the end of the day. It really just kind of depends on how people interpret different factors that determine where people sit on the topic.
It doesn't bother me personally. In the example of Dave the Diver, that shouldn't have been nominated because the team itself is not independent. Case closed.
With E33 that simply isn't the case though. Sandfall isn't owned by anyone. They are independent so it qualifies to me. Is it a bigger budget than most indies tend to be? Absolutely. Is it kind of crazy to think this means a big studio like a Larian could technically be called independent as well? Yeah it is.
However, the award isn't called "The best game from an independent studio that has a small team and a small budget and sought no outside help to accomplish its development". Maybe changes need to be made to the criteria of the award itself (spoiler: yes improvements could be made) but that isn't Sandfall's fault. They won the award as its presented fair and square.
@TheArt E33 is an incredible RPG too though and deserves all the praise it has gotten. It's also just much more my style of RPG. I've always preferred turn-based RPGs with a party where you can really tinker with your setup for battle.
I get KCD fans being sad it didn't get any wins but at least it got some nominations. I'm a bit sad to see once again the Trails series got completely ignored. Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter didn't even get one nomination. Talk about not getting the time of day.
But that's just how it goes. There are a lot of games that come out these days so it's not realistic to expect journalists to play every single one of them. I certainly can't keep up. I'm drowning in my backlog!
@Rezium
It's like clockwork I tell ya. Thing gets popular. People don't like that thing is popular. Attempt to drag down thing that is popular for whatever reason. Eventually realize it's not working and so move on to next thing to try to drag down.
Can't we just be happy a lot of people enjoyed something? It's fine to disagree on things but I just don't get the desire to drag things down.
Expedition 33 is number 1 of course. Number 2 though I think I'd have to go with Dispatch actually. Really like that one more than I thought I would. 3rd would be Assassins Creed Shadows followed by Ghost of Yotei and coming in at 5 is Sonic Racing Crossworlds.
@Reyzore I'll certainly agree E33 is a bigger budget indie compared to something like a Hades 2. There are certainly bigger and smaller indies out there. Just like there are bigger AAA and smaller AAA (or AA if you prefer). GTA6 for example has a budget most developers/publishers wouldn't even dream of.😄
@Max_the_German
Well no... Fromsoft isn't independent because they are owned by Kadokawa. In fact if you remember a little while ago there was talk of Sony inadvertently owning Fromsoft's when there was talk that Sony was interested in buying out Kadokawa. (It didn't happen obviously)
I agree that finding a publishing partner is a perfectly normal thing to do. I never said it wasn't. It's just another means to secure funding. Just like grants from a government or starting a Kickstarter.
@Reyzore Sure thing. Kena Bridge of Spirits -Financially supported by Sony (hence why it was a timed exclusive) -Developed on Unreal -Sure it didn't launch with physical version right away but I think it only delayed a month or two if I remember correctly. -Technically can be completed quicker than 30 hours but if it's a complete playthrough it could last for around that length. (Also a different genre than an RPG like E33 so not as expected to last that long) -3D game (not that I think that matters really but I digress) -I don't know the exact number of people that worked on it but Ember Lab partnered with other support studios to work on the game.
And at the end of the day, Sony doesn't own Ember Lab or the IP. So yes I would say they are independent as well.
It was the only logical choice. An absolute masterpiece.
I see why some folks might argue it isn't "indie" in the traditional sense but I think it still fits the category. Kepler is a publishing partner. They don't own Sandfall Interactive. They just helped provide funds/support. Sandfall could go to any other publisher they want with their next game or they could choose to self-publish if they want. That wouldn't be the case if they weren't independent.
No one questions if a Kickstarter funded game is independent. It's the same concept in my eyes. The money for development has to come from somewhere.
@SeanOhOgain It's the endless cycle. Thing gets popular. People don't like thing that is popular being more popular than thing they like. Say it's overrated to show their distaste for thing that is popular.
I get everyone has opinions but I don't understand the need people have to drag things down. I wasn't nearly as hot on BG3 as most people but I congratulate Larian on their work for the game. I can respect the craftsmanship even if I'm not the target audience. I don't know how anyone can look at E33 and just say "meh, who would want to play something like this? Overrated." Game was awesome.
I really loved Cyberpunk when I played it. I didn't try it until the PS5 version was out though so I didn't go through the rough launch. I remember being so bummed though after hearing how much of a disaster the launch was because I was always interested.
I'm glad CDPR stuck with it though because underneath all the bugs was an absolutely awesome RPG.
I'm not surprised Tokon isn't in this year. We haven't had a new character reveal since it was first revealed. That alone tells me it's further away than most expected. Plus I wonder if the recent beta has made them consider changing some things about it because the general sentiment around the game is a bit...wishy-washy I'd say. I thought it was fine personally but I'm just one guy.
I'm looking forward to trying to attend EVO again this year though. Gotta put my SF6 skills to the test!
No surprise Street Fighter 6 was at the top of my list. It goes... 1. SF6 (391 hours) 2. Persona 3 Reload (111 hours) 3. Assassin's Creed Shadows (109 hours) 4. Clair Obscur Expedition 33 (79 hours) 5. Ghost of Yotei (52 hours)
I think there was a mistake for one of mine. I'm positive I put more hours into Trails through Daybreak 2 than Ghost simply because it's a longer game. Oh well. It describes me well enough. Lots of SF with RPGs and open world adventures on the side.
Good for him. Tekken wasn't ever one of my favorite fighters out there but Harada always demonstrated a clear passion for his work. Stuck with it for 30 years! You don't do that unless you really love it.

I really liked Splitgate 2 so I'm definitely at least going to try it. The only real reason I stopped playing was that I just couldn't keep up with everyone else. Maybe I'll do better this time!

Unfortunate but on the bright side, 37% wanting a physical game under the tree isn't insignificant at least. It's actually higher than I would expect.
