Alongside our Game of the Year top 10 list and personal picks from the Push Square editorial team, we are recognising the best PS5 games of 2025 in select categories. Today is the turn of the best PS5 action game of 2025.
Bronze Trophy: Elden Ring Nightreign

Condensing Elden Ring's robust mix of combat styles down into a breakneck multiplayer experience is no easy feat, but Elden Ring Nightreign somehow manages to pull it off.
While this is quite clearly a case of FromSoftware squeezing its open world RPG dry, Nightreign does end up feeling like its own thing thanks to a roster of distinct playable characters and reworked boss fights.
And again, the sheer pace of each gauntlet can't be underestimated — especially once you've got to grips with the game's initially chaotic flow.
The bottom line here is that it's still hard to top the Japanese developer's sense of grandiose action, and Nightreign's got that in spades.

Silver Trophy: Ghost of Yotei

Expanding on Ghost of Tsushima's battles by handing lead character Atsu a bunch of different weapons instead of sword-based stances, Ghost of Yotei feels like a measured but impressive upgrade in the action department.
Sucker Punch's samurai cinema combat may not have the mechanical depth of its competition, but it's slick, stylish, and undeniably satisfying. Atsu's dances of death feel fantastic to unravel, and the ability to hurl discarded weapons at unsuspecting opponents will simply never get old.
But we think it's the boss fights that elevate Yotei. The developer knew that Tsushima's one-on-one duels were highlights of the experience, and so it doubled down on them in the sequel to great effect.

Gold Trophy: Ninja Gaiden 4

Ninja Gaiden 4 may not have the best storytelling or level design of the games on this list, but that's not necessarily a problem when the action is just so damn good.
Obviously this is a franchise that's always revelled in brutality — both from a difficulty and animation perspective, and this latest instalment doesn't shy away from either. You'll be hard pressed to find a bloodier game on PS5 — and we mean that in the best possible way.
When you're in the zone, there's nothing quite like a good Ninja Gaiden; it's a pleasure to see its relentless brand of action return in such fine form after so many years.

Platinum Trophy: Monster Hunter Wilds

You just can't beat Monster Hunter when it's firing on all cylinders, and Monster Hunter Wilds nails the long-standing formula. There are some truly epic clashes to behold in Capcom's latest effort.
At its core, this series has always been about mastering both your chosen weapon and the beasts that stand before you. Granted, Wilds was perhaps a little... easy at launch, with the developer worried that a tricky story campaign could push new players away.
But we're now four major title updates down the road, and Wilds is the place to be if you really want to put your monster slaying skills to the test.
It's got to be one of the most rewarding games on PS5; the thrill of finally being able to go toe-to-toe with a foe that once seemed insurmountable is unmatched.

Capcom does combat best
With Monster Hunter Wilds still having performance issues it should be excluded from the list.
@Oram77 If games with performance issues got excluded then most games wouldn't make the cut, even E33 had some issues on PC, even Silent Hill F which you hold in high regard has performance issues on PS5.
Had a blast with Monster Hunter Wilds and the combat is always the highlight of these games as it's always done so well.
Despite the performance woes, MH Wilds does still have that great MH gameplay that we all know and love.
@UltimateOtaku91 You mention Silent hill f and yet it hasn't shown up on any list so far
Wow wow y'all couldn't be so right. At least someone's gets it, that MH Wilds' combat action is crazy! It gets overlooked cause y'know "just another Monster Hunter again." I can say with confidence it's the best out there in the way of animations and monster behaviour. Nobody does monsters like MH and this takes it up a notch, all the environmental effects when fighting monsters like Rey Dau, Uth Duna, Arkveld faaaaacckkk! And the way your character moves....so sublime! I played this for like 30hrs straight not playing no other games.
@TheArt Rey Dau might be one of my favourite monsters to fight in any Monster Hunter game to date, and that's saying a hell of a lot.
Eternal Strands was the best action game I played this year, by a wide margin.
Never could get into MH. I really tried with World but it's just not for me. Ghost of Yotei or Ninja Gaiden for me. Shinobi would probably be number 3 the combat in that game was pretty solid if a bit too straightforward at times.
@ShogunRok The effects just had me wowing and wowing I couldn't even focus on actually fighting him. It's crazy!
@Korgon I implores you like Bill Williamson to keep trying, it's going to click. I mean you love Street Fighter, it's the same action with cool moves hidden in different weapons only fighting monsters this time.
@Oram77 still don't know the performance issues people talk about, I hear it's largely on PC and they've overblown it. Anyhow considering the amount of action going on on screen at the same time, the effects and rapid realistic animations in high quality graphics, any game would struggle.
A game called 63 days.
Nothing of above, especially Elden Fortnite or Tsushima 1.5. The best action of 2025 for me without a doubt was Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, the combat was simply stellar. That was one heck of the debut, can't wait to see what those guys will do next.
Where are First Berserker Khazan or Lost Soul Aside?
Both were far superior to all the games on this list except GoY.
MHW and ERN had (and I believe still have) severe performance issues and should not have been included.
I voted Shinobi but NG 4, Ragebound, and Yotei also deserves my vote.
Next year will have a lot of potential banger like Onimusha, Saros, Wolverine, Pragmata, Phantom Blade Zero, Nioh 3, W40K Boltgun 2, Crimson Desert, First Light etc.
First Berserker seems worthy of a nomination.
Shinobi art 🥷 of vengeance is such a good game. Word up son
Enjoyed Wilds and am enjoying Nightreign despite both having disappointing aspects to them. They're still a ton of fun. I might have to go with Nightreign as my best action game cause I get that one more run feeling
Not played MH wilds but if we're going purely on action, then if its anywhere near as good as World, it deserves to be in the list. But my pick would still be Ghost. Although I look forward to playing Ninja Gaiden 4 at some point
@Rich33 They gave Lost Soul Aside a 6/10 so wouldn't make this list.
This is objectively the worst list I’ve seen on here so far. Just my humble opinion.
I did enjoy Elden Ring mostly. Not my cup of tea with so much multiplayer in the mix, but I liked it. Didn't play GoY or MH, but will soon.
On another note: Where once Gold was the best, we include platinum as for a fourth option.... wouldn't be better if there are three Trophies tier and some honourable mentions?
@Rich33 When the site reviewed First Berserker Khazan I honestly felt like the reviewer barely played the game. I agree it’s combat was top tier and it absolutely deserves a spot here even if you can justifiably criticize the level design or difficulty in some of those boss fights.
@JDINCINERATOR
Well they only gave NG4 a 7/10 and it is in their 2nd spot!
Even going by just a little variability FBK and LSA should have been included in listings at the very least. Ive played all 3 through twice and FBK and LSA are both superior games imo.
@whitejessegpfc
I know exactly what you mean.
I'm sure the review included something about the mechanics not working all the time, yet we see no hit runs.
@Rich33 Haha yeah kinda funny PS put NG 4 at runner up despite they gave it a 7/10 meanwhile NG Ragebound and Shinobi has better score, 8/10 and 9/10, and they aren't in this list. Heck, Shinobi even got better score than Elden Ring DLC.
I'm curious with PS staff voting process but i respect their decisions. Next year they'll have much harder job to decide best action games.
@PuppetMaster
Im not saying NG4 was a bad game, but I definitely think certain games deserve the spot more, and aren't even on the 'vote for' list.
Plus, it's pretty telling that GoY is only 3rd place, yet has (as I write) 52% of the vote.
Totally agree - next year certain categories like this one could be a metaphorical bloodbath! (If a lot of the games live up to the hype).
@TheArt
I gave it a good 8-10 hours or so. It just did nothing for me. The combat, the hub, the loop, the weird quirk of needing to do the intro cutscenes before doing co-op in story missions (maybe Wilds fixed this but this weird quirk just killed any momentum it had for my friend and I when we tried to play co-op in World). All of it really just doesn't click for me. The animations are impressive though. I'll give you that.
I'm happy people like it but I just have no desire to try it anymore. I like SF for many reasons outside of just some cool moves you can do. There's more to it than that but I won't bore you with the details.
Silksong for me, by a distance, but I haven’t played many of the top choices yet.
Ninja Gaiden 4 and Elden Ring.
@Rich33 why do you think Yōtei has over 50% votes … on a PlayStation forum..
They are trying to place it in every possible category to give it any reward. I wait for best racing games to see Yōtei there as well.
@Korgon Lol 8-10hrs isn't enough, I tried for more than 50hrs playing solo though, on again and off again and it just clicked after gradually getting to understand the game. Try again solo once in a while when you can but hey I hear ya.
@TheArt
I don't know. If a game hasn't clicked at all for 8 hours it's probably fair to say it isn't going to click later on. This is coming from a fan of JRPGS which are notorious for slow starts after all!
1. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound
2. Ninja Gaiden 4
3. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance
@Leinad7
Because it's an excellent game which PS5 users can play.
I probably wouldn't expect it on an Xbox, Nintendo, or PC centered site's GOTY listing, given that it's not available on those platforms.
Part of my point was that it has only been awarded silver, yet clearly should have been number 1 in this category - I mean it's not as if anything else is even remotely close in the poll - currently 50% with the nearest being 10%.
The other part of my point is that there are other deserving games that could have been included on the list, but 1 thing does not preclude the other.
Oef....this is wrong.
@tangyzesty Playing Eternal Strands at the moment and really enjoying it (have sunk alot more time into it than i expected I would), though purely on the action/combat front I don't think it makes the top four. Personally for me it's Ninja Gaiden 4, that combat is just flawless, even though I've never been into that genre before.
But yeah, would be great to see Strands get some wider recognition
@Rich33 What you're describing is popularity vs critical opinion. Now, despite what the Internet may say, critical opinion is not irrelevant compared to popular opinion, however it's not more important either as both are very useful metric.
That said, Push Square are critics. They take a critical look at gaming in general, and given their more objective attempt at an opinion. This is a critics list, and so no, it's not Obvious that Ghost of Yotai should be Number 1 instead of number 3 on the list.
Far more people will have played it sure, which is a sign that Yotai is a better example of what most people WANT out of their games, but the poll isn't a particularly valid break down of what is the best action game, as very few of the respondants will have played more than 1 or 2 of the games listed.
@Lysterao
I get what you are saying, however, if you look at this from a purely critical review point of view only, which I don't believe is the be all and end all anyway - NG4 scored 7 and GoY a 9, meaning that GoY should easily be above NG4.
When it comes to GoY vs MHW, both scored 9, so you would need to consider public opinion to split them, and GoY wins this easily.
In fact, by critic review reasoning, NG4 shouldn't even feature in the top 4 at all, as at least 1 of the titles not in the top 4 (DW Origins) scored an 8, above NG4 (there could be more, but I remember this one).
@Rich33
You're right on the surface level, problem is reviews here are only done by one person, we don't know the behind the scenes discussions when deciding lists like this. And this is why I preferred EGM to many other mags back in the day, you'd get 3 or 4 people reviewing the same title, get a better idea of how the staff views things and made their end of the year awards make more sense.
@Gamer83
Ideally, I agree with you - recently, we have had a few too many overly critical reviews here (eg FBK), or reviews that miss glaring technical issues which should be easily visible to most.
Sadly, I just think nowhere has the resources.
