Falcom has finally announced its sequel to Tokyo Xanadu, which it's been working on for at least the last couple of years.
It's called Kyoto Xanadu, and it's headed to PS5 this summer. You'll have to bear with the Nintendo Direct trailer for now, though.
Like its predecessor, it's an action-based RPG centred around a colourful cast of teenage heroes, who somehow stumble into another world where swords speak louder than words. You know, the usual.
It looks like this game's going to run on Falcom's new engine — the one that makes Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter look so pretty.

Interestingly, Kyoto Xanadu's going to opt for side-scrolling dungeon exploration, not unlike a Metroidvania. This is a departure from the fully 3D environments of Tokyo Xanadu, so it'll be interesting to see how fans react.
Big battles, however, will still take place in a fully 3D space.

I will be all over this when it comes out.
Unexpected drop. LFGGGGG!
Most of what I had heard of Tokyo Xanadu basically boiled down to 'Trails X Persona' so seeing SotN-style Metroidvania gameplay show up during the trailer surprised the hell out of me XD

I'm currently on a huge Falcom obsession right now after wrapping up Trails 1st (its peak) so I really want to give Tokyo and now Kyoto Xanadu a go in the near future, especially given how much this trailer has won me over on the latter 🙌
Looks great! The side-scrolling bits did throw me for a loop but not necessarily in a bad way. As a fan of the original I can't say the dungeon design was a highlight anyway so I'm fine with the change. Definitely on my list this year.
Here is a novice question since I'm a bit out of the know regarding this one: is this Kyoto sequel tied directly to Tokyo Xanadu and is Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ (I assume that's the first game) a game worth playing story/gameplay wise?
Am I seeing double? 2D dungeon explorer metroidvania-like & 3D action RPG in the same package? Take my money!

Not sure yet how connected or not the two games are but the story for Tokyo was pretty good if not a bit formulaic. If you've played any of the Trails titles it's like that only with purely action combat instead of turn-based.
Best announcement today. Probably will buy it on Switch 2, this game looks perfect for handheld.
@Czar_Khastik As a big Falcom fan I'd say it's a rock solid 7/10. Fun if slightly basic combat, generic but decent characters, okay story.
Worth a shot if you see it on sale and you fancy some anime-style action.
