“The grenade football is an allegory about the concerted negativity campaign by all the people who rated our game badly.” - Whatever the CEO’s name was who spouted all those paranoid delusions.
>No matter how much people moan and cry about it, game discs are old fashioned and not fit for purpose.
Well, it’s the only medium that Sony can’t take from us if our account gets removed. I don’t call that “old-fashioned.” Delisted games are also a factor. Discs aren’t forever, but they exist outside of account/license expiration. Try buying a copy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1-2, Transformers Devastation, etc digitally. You can’t.
>Most AAA games can't fit in the 100gig limit now and most indie games are digital only.
Games can come on two discs. The fact that programmers need more space isn’t a compelling one. Also, the existence of digital-only games does not mean physical games must cease to exist.
>People are going out of their way to create a culture of negativity which will only harm the game industry.
If a “culture of negativity” is what fells the game industry, then the game industry was far weaker than anyone thought and a crash would be inevitable either way.
>Going to hurt Sony because you can't have discs anymore?
Yes. By not giving them money for anything digital since their announcement and not buying a PS6. Well spotted!
>Why? Does Valve do discs?
PCs are a different animal altogether. You can back up pc games. You can strip the DRM from them. You have more than one store, like GOG for example. Sony allows none of those things on console.
>Does Xbox?
Well yes, actually. They haven’t announced no more Xbox discs, you see. And if they do, then I’ll be fine with them, too. They’re on the way, but they have the chance to do the funniest thing ever with Helix.
>Does Nintendo?
They still do physical media and that’s the equivalent of a disc. So yes, they do.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk! It’s rather sad that physical folks are quite happy to also purchase digital games (I was and did!) but those who advocate for digital only seem almost gleeful that those who prefer physical media are being shut out. It’s very telling.
@TheSingularity …how is it brainless to encourage people to buy it on a non-Sony platform, exactly?
Convenient that you’re leaving that part out.
Also, as you said in a later comment, it is indeed your money and your life. Just like others can choose to NOT give Sony any more money due to this decision. Hope you love your PS6!
I am one of those buying Denshattack and any other digital-only games I can on non-PS platforms.
Sony gets ZERO dollars from me for anything but a disc release now. I’ll be playing Denshattack on Switch 2.
That said, folks who only have a PS shouldn’t feel pressured to boycott digital only releases like this, and I’d never shame anyone who bought Denshattack. It’s a great game and the devs shouldn’t be punished for Sony’s idiocy.
@get2sammyb sorry that PS is getting collateral damage on this one, blame Sony’s idiotic decision and lack of response!
Maybe they’ll release it for Switch 2 and give us a complete physical release there.
I mean, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and the Oblivion remaster for full on-cart releases. Let’s make it a full three!
Odd how they just can’t figure out how to give us a full game on disc(s) but they can manage it on game cards…
@LordOfTurnips Tell me you don’t know that the PS5 can read 100GB Blu-ray Discs without telling me you don’t know that the PS5 can read 100GB Blu-ray Discs. Oh, and that games can have more than one disc. You know, like Last of Us part 2, FF7 Remake/Rebirth, the Mass Effect trilogy release, etc.
@LemanRusk Sorry, which “anime grifter” are you speaking of? I looked at the list and don’t really recognize more than one name, and I have no investment in any of them either way. Just curious!
@Quintumply Good to know! I’ll be picking this up for Switch 2 and looking forward to it! I lean more your perspective on the matter. Just wanted to ask specifically, thanks!
I notice that the Nintendo Life reviewer wasn’t a fan of the scenario and other “bloat” they cited like the onsens and side stuff. Did you experience any of that dislike? Or was it all enjoyable?
No wonder the disc version requires a download if it just went gold. It’s probably another DOOM The Dark Ages game-key-disc scenario where there’s like 40MB of data on the disc.
Not an auspicious start to Halo on PS. Hope it’s good for those who will be playing it!
Ah yes, the most hard core gamers. Those Fortniters and Call-of-Dutyers. Surely they’ll step in to fill the gap left by the people like me that Sony just completely alienated!
…sadly they probably will. My conscience is clear tho. No discs no buy.
@stefan771 They announced it eight years ago. If they didn’t start development on it till after STARFIELD released then they done fouled up the bed even worse than everyone expected and my sympathy for them is even less than before.
@totheteeth No one would have cared if they took some time away but for the memorial, which is the whole point. Remove that and no one cares at all. Your reaction seems a teensy over the top given that.
“Hey, that game that takes place in a certain time period? Change it so the culture of that time period isn’t reflected and water down the character development a bit.”
@MasterChiefWiggum Agreed. I’m just darkly amused that they’re now afraid of crunch or whatever with fewer people, and I’m sitting here thinking, “You’ve had nearly a DECADE to get this done, is this really going to change much at this point vis a vis the game itself?”
@Gedrick Same. I have a PS5 Pro, Series X and Switch 2.
I’m good splitting my purchases between the three. Discs for PS5 while they’re here, Switch 2 and Series X for future releases after Sony completes shooting themselves in the crotch in early 2028.
@TheSingularity I’m amused that you’re taking my statement seriously instead of treating it as the anti-Sony feeling it is. OF COURSE they’re not “saving me money,” only an idiot would think that.
Sony can bury their heads in the sand all they want, but they pissed people (like me) off enough to just forswear Sony consoles going forward.
Sony deserves everything they’re getting in these comment sections.
@dragon83 You’re almost completely wrong. Most PS games have the actual game on there. Ubisoft and Microsoft fling these game key discs out there for sure but MOST devs actually put a game on the disc. Please stop spreading this easily disproved misinformation.
This entire debacle has proven to me that I can go on without a PlayStation in my life.
It’s been fun, Sony. I’ve been with you since the PS1. But once you stop making new game discs, I’m done with you beyond buying previously released disc games.
Unless Sony backtracks immensely, I hope the PS6 fails and fails hard.
Call me crazy, but I’m not willing to give Sony the benefit of the doubt on ANYTHING currently.
That goodwill is gone. Is that unfair of me? Very likely, but my level of caring has dropped CONSIDERABLY in the last week or so, can’t quite put my finger on why…
@PlayNation5 Yeah, no. I still want my discs, thanks. The reasoning is appreciated, though.
@Mjoen Pretty sure the console-in-a-TV concept has been tried. It…didn’t go well. Not to mention if the screen dies, the repair/shipping/warranty service would be a massive pain in the rear…
That’s all. Just huh. Funny how that all works out, ain’t it?
It’s almost like people are seeing the horror of the all-digital indefinite rental up close and realizing that maaaaaaaaaybe they might need that drive after all.

Re: Sony Imposes 'Strictest Ever Social Media Guidelines' on Staff Due to PS5 Disc Debacle
@nyr2k2 Huh. My PS1 discs still work just fine. And in 20 years, so will all the PS4/5 discs with playable builds of the game on them.
Re: Sony Imposes 'Strictest Ever Social Media Guidelines' on Staff Due to PS5 Disc Debacle
Hey, if Sony is fine staying silent, I’m fine not buying their digital products or the PS6.
Message received, Sony.
