ID tech is great, and those core staff should be around to support other studios as they have with Fable and Halo.
The recent games have been less than stellar, and the sales across platforms prove that.
People didn't show up for the games. MS can't be expected to throw money at teams that don't deliver. I would understand if they were forced to make a new live service IP, but they made a single-player DOOM game, which should have sold better.
Sony knows that Twitter isn't real life. The numbers don't lie, if Physical was popular and profitable, Sony would not be looking to wind it down in 18 months.
Sony won't reverse course, but what they should do in the near future is outline how they will improve digital store services around buying, sharing, trading in/selling, and refunding.
As for Domino's, it costs the same as a full-price video game to feed a family of 4, and it isn't even nice pizza. They are in no position to be on a high horse.
Would much rather the Asha Sharma approach of honest communication about issues rather than Sony, who will throw out a blog post and hide like cowards, leaving Push Square to speculate and try to fill in the many gaps.
Asha is right to get rid of the bloat that loses Xbox money and focus on the dev team that delivers games that Xbox and PS players want to play (Like COD, Forza, TES).
@Gryffin, Sony will be required to sell its codes to retailers to prevent a monopoly. It confirmed in its statement that it will do that from Jan 2028 (maybe sooner due to the current legal challenge in the UK).
There is no legal requirement for them to provide the product on a disc or cartridge.
If you look at the state of Game in the UK and GameStop in the US, sadly the end of this gen probably is the right time.
Game is now a toy shop that no longer takes in trade-ins or does midnight launches. You will be lucky if the odd Smyths store does one of these days for really big events. You can only sell games to CeX in terms of large chains.
It's just the sad reality of physical media in the mainstream today.
@Nem, you said something about a monopoly, but if Sony sells its digital codes to 3rd party retailers as they have agreed, then there is no monopoly, as you can access the game outside the PlayStation Store.
There is no legal requirement as to the format in which the game is sold. Companies are not legally required to sell physical discs and cartridges. They are, however, required to ensure that the game isn't just sold on one closed ecosystem.
@datamonkey They won't, though, because Sony is a business and the money is with the digital purchases these days. We should never fool ourselves into thinking that large corporations care about anything other than profit. Give it a week and the Xbox layoffs will dominate the news, and it will all blow over for Sony beyond a very small vocal minority.
@Nem Sony said they are going to be selling their digital version of games in stores from 2028. There are already lawsuits against Sony regarding their removal of digital versions from retailers from 2019 to the present.
As long as they do digital copies of games like Xbox and Nintendo do, then they will be fully compliant.
@datamonkey Yeah, this is why blind brand loyalty never works; you should only ever remain loyal if they are offering as much as they are taking. I have all the consoles, and I will only pick and choose the best bits from each to make things work for me.
This will blow over in a few days, and it won't affect Sony's business in any meaningful way.
As much as the small minority online wants Sony to backtrack, they won't because the data shows that they needed to do this sooner or later if they wanted to further invest in the digital infrastructure (which they need to do).
Sadly, Twitter, Push Square, and other gaming sites represent a much smaller bubble (no more than 10% of the overall install base), and Sony knows they are big enough to lose 10% of physical sales and still be in a good place as future generations continue to buy digital games.
Many of us have complained about the mismanagement of single-player games, live service failures, and the closure of the rewards for PS5, but the sales for consoles, subscriptions, and games have gone up a fair bit vs PS4.
The sad reality is that 90% of gamers are just not invested and just don't care about these changes.
Sony's decades of brand trust and resonance mean they will continue to do very well for a while yet.
The 10% of us online with our grievances will have to get with the program or find a new platform or hobby.
Virtuos actually has a really strong track record with Switch/2 ports, so ironically this might actually run better than the PS5 and Xbox Series versions.
Not a game I was looking forward to, and I suspect it's costing far more than it could ever make. It's a shame for the people looking forward to the game, though. MS needs to trim the fat, though, sadly, it has become way too bloated due to previous mismanagement. Sony has done, and continues to do, the same with Herman Hulst's poor choices.
The majority of gamers that don't follow gaming news will never know about the layoffs that Sony and Microsoft do. I can imagine that amongst hard core circles the mismanagement from both companies is pretty unpopular though.
I can't see how Microsoft could be any less popular with hardcore Playstation fans tbh.
@Yor-sama, Xbox has sold over 40 million consoles, and it's not a game you can play on Game Pass. I think a 2:1 ratio would be more accurate given the 2:1 install base.
@twitchtvpat Yep sadly Hookshot have had to lean more into engagement bait to feed what the Google search engine wants. No ad revenue equals no payday.
I have noticed the change myself over the last 2-3 years.
At the retailer I work for (UK), we are trying to hold PS5 and Xbox series stock for later in the year as our Q3 and Q4 allocation will be down by almost 40%. Us and a couple of other multichannel UK retailers get the bulk of the shipments.
It will be curious to see if the lower supply is countered by the higher prices or will GTA 6 frenzy mean our warehouses go bare for Christmas (at full price no plans for any PS5 console discounts for black Friday).
Not sure what the situation will be like outside the UK but with Sony already making it clear it will be making less units, and Xbox struggling to ramp up, a shortage is possible.
This is much worse for Sony than for my workplace as we make a very small percentage on each console sale. There is no motive to scare customers into buying consoles that make us so little. The margins are much better on software so we will be more excited about GTA 6.
I expect sales for PS5 and Xbox Series to drop off sharply until we get to Oct/Nov, when you will get people wanting to get a console for GTA 6 (and are desperate enough to pay the much higher prices). Switch 2 will need to stay within that $500/£500 range in order to maintain decent sales over the next few years. Using and stocking up on older/cheaper Storage and SSD will help them keep costs down.
A lot of it depends on the contracts that have been signed. What mass market price did Sony lock in and when did they do it?
They might be able to sell 10 million units at £700/$750 with a minor loss and then have to increase to that £950/$1000 mark once the existing stock purchased at the lower price has run dry.
If it's under £800 I'll get one day one as it won't be getting any cheaper for a long while.

@boarderbro88 The last thing we need is less competition for Sony after what has been happening with them recently.

I might get the hybrid Xbox PC. It all depends on the cost vs performance ratio for PS6, Helix, or a built PC.

From what I am hearing, Focus Entertainment (French Company) is in the mix for Senua and State of Decay 3, and in talks around Arkane.

Once you are gone, all of these "owned" things are irrelevant anyways.
