The Japanese games market is pretty much cornered by Nintendo and has been for a while, but Sony's still plugging away with PS5, and it's slowly getting better for the console.
Late last year, a new, Japan-exclusive PS5 model launched with a reduced retail price and support for the Japanese language only. It's proven to be popular, and sales numbers over the last couple of weeks have continued to grow.
According to Famitsu (thanks, Gematsu), combined sales of PS5 models reached 46,753 during the period.

By comparison, Switch 1 models totalled 46,360, so PS5 outsold it by just a hair.
These sales numbers don't really put much of a dent on Nintendo's dominance in the country, but at least things are trending in the right direction.
Here's the full rundown of hardware sales over the last two weeks:
- Switch 2 – 313,838 (4,097,905)
- Switch Lite – 18,460 (6,822,925)
- Switch OLED Model – 16,916 (9,414,838)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 36,856 (1,154,384)
- Switch – 10,984 (20,224,740)
- PlayStation 5 – 6,033 (5,875,458)
- PlayStation 5 Pro -3,864 (315,121)
- Xbox Series X Digital Edition – 149 (24,860)
- Xbox Series S – 103 (340,464)
- Xbox Series X -29 (323,884)
- PlayStation 4 – 25 (7,930,176)

Damn… those Xbox numbers though 🤣
PS4 sold almost as many as the Series X.
Buying an xbox in Japan is a similar experience to buying rude magazines over here
(from what I'm told)
Those Xbox figures are embarrassing, and to think they still put on a yearly TGS showcase to win over the Japanese players 😬, to no avail every time.
I love how people are mocking Xbox sales numbers when the PlayStation numbers are absolutely shocking compared to Nintendo. 🤔
At this rate Sony will sell just over 9 million by the end of 2027 which is near enough keeping up with the PS4 sales in Japan. All they need to do now is make a native portable console to get back more of that market.
PlayStations absolutely dominating Xbox in every sector. 25 😂😂😂 goodness sake.
Oh my bad it’s 29 😁
@SMJ Idk, is it some form of coping? People here complain about my „negativity“ towards Sony, probably because they think that being a fan must mean to cheer. I find this weird, football fans usually complain the loudest about the coach and the performance of their team.
@GamingGod Shouldn't you be more concerned about how badly PlayStation is doing against Nintendo rather than mocking Xbox (who have never had a hope in hell in Japan)?
@SMJ @Max_the_German Thank god I wasn't the only one thinking this. For a minute, I wondered if I'm just an a**.
It's just a weird deflection when we all know the Xbox doesn't sell in Japan, and the Series, in particular, doesn't sell anywhere. To the point where Microsoft obviously doesn't try to make it appealing anymore.
When the article is specifically about the PS5's numbers relative the Switch's, and cites the recent cheaper, region-blocked release, you'd think the comments would be about that.
@Max_the_German I completely agree. I want Sony to do well but the PS5 generation has been my least favourite by far. Sony have got to the stage where they can coast by with minimal effort towards their fans. It's the reason my PS3 is currently hooked up to my TV and my PS5 hasn't been switched on in months.
@RoomWithaMoose @Max_the_German I suppose it's easier to punch down towards Xbox than admit Sony are failing miserably against Nintendo in Japan.
Its an improvement, but hardly 1 to be proud of. The Switch Lite alone sold almost as many units as all PS5 combined. Sony getting absolutely thrashed by Nintendo in their home country.
It’s not great though is it?! I’m sure when they thought up this price model they expected higher sales than competing with the switch 1
@SMJ Microsoft thanks you for your commitment at being an apologist for them.
Bro comes to a PLAYSTATION site expecting people to not point out how bad Xbox is doing.
I think sometimes it does not matter what each company does and each console has its main territory.
Nintendo Japan
Sony Europe
USA sometimes a bit of a mish mash.
God knows why people are bringing up Xbox.
We all know they are gone console wise and have chosen to become a publisher.
I like Xbox but I’m not daft enough to fight against the Xbox out come this generation and probably forever.
@RoomWithaMoose @SMJ It‘s a sign of strength if you compare yourself with the stronger and not with the weaker competitors. And the stronger competitors of PlayStation are Switch in Japan and Steam in many other places in the world. Valve earns 30% of every game sold via Steam, as Sony does with PSN. But Valve doesn’t need to develop and sell (subsidised) hardware. No wonder that Microsoft wants to stop following Sony‘s and start following Valve‘s path.
@OldGamer999 why shouldn't they bring up Xbox?
People online are quick to bring up Nintendo but they can't Xbox?
@Naughtyottsel92 Because the subject of the article is PS vs Nintendo?
Not saying you can't bring up Xbox, but it does feel more out of place. The usual suspects on this site always feel the need to point out how bad Xbox sales are in Japan, whether it's related to the subject of the article or not, as if the console(s) has ever sold well there.
@SMJ one country 😂. Everywhere else PS is more than competing. I think people are well within there rights to mock with these numbers mate. Beyond parody at this point
@Naughtyottsel92 My point was that Xbox being absolutely awful is Japan doesn't even need to be mentioned. It's blindingly obvious. But people like yourself won't confront how poorly PlayStation is doing against Nintendo. And that was pretty much the theme of the article.
Do you actually have an opinion on that?
@SMJ do you remember PS vita sales being something like 70% Japanese or something crazy like that. All Sony need to do is release a native handheld and they will be sweet. Anyway 6.5 million sales isn’t that bad is it. It’s nearly a qaurter of Xbox total sales
@GamingGod The original Switch has outsold the PS4 and PS5 combined in Japan. That's beyond parody.
@SMJ no it’s not really. It’s not surprising at all given Japanese tastes in how they game. Recent Xbox numbers are the ones that are abysmal mate. And that’s not just japan
@SMJ Nintendo is outselling PS5 and I'm glad because the Switch 2 is my favourite console this generation and I'm glad to see more third party games coming to Switch 2.
Didn't go the way you expected did it?
People like you feel the need to come on a PLAYSTATION site crying whenever PS fans don't say how wonderful Xbox is but you also go on PureXbox to talk crap about the PS brand yourself.
@SMJ PS4 almost outsold the Series X, that's beyond parody.
@GamingGod The Vita (one of my favourite consoles ever btw) sold around 5 million systems in Japan compared to the 3DS selling 25 million.
Why didn't the Japanese taste for handhelds help the Vita do better than selling 5 times less than the competition?
@SMJ I don’t know I’m not Japanese mate. I don’t get their taste for Nintendo, personally I can’t stand there games. But that’s still nearly half total vita sales isn’t it. I also love vita btw. I use mine regularly for platinum hunting. But I’ll be honest this love you have for PS doesn’t really come across very well. All you seem to do is jump on anyone who talks about Xbox. The amount of criticism Ps gets on this site from PS fans is almost as much as the love it gets
@Naughtyottsel92 People like me? A person who has owned every PlayStation console including handhelds and both VR headsets? A person like me who has bought around 1500 games across all PlayStation consoles?
Or do you mean a person like me who owns all 3 systems and doesn't blindly follow everything Sony does with a smile? Someone who isn't tied to one platform and speaks objectively? Someone who wants Sony to improve because they believe that the PS5 generation is the most complacent and lazy Sony have ever produced?
Which is it?
@SMJ Bro keeps bringing up owning PS systems as some massive credential.
I own all 4 Xbox platforms and I think this generation has been an absolute embarrassment from them. The PS5 may not be my preferred system but at least it's a better time than the rubbish Microsoft put out.
You follow whatever talking points Spencer makes even when he's talking absolute nonsense.
@GamingGod it's why I don't believe a word he says.
Every comment screams " don't be mean to Xbox!!!" and then he brings up owning PS systems for some reason.
I've got Xbox fanboy friends who do nothing but put down PS and Nintendo but still buy their consoles in the end and vice versa.
@GamingGod The entire theme of the article was about how PlayStation is doing better in weekly sales specifically against Nintendo in Japan. Xbox have done so poorly in Japan that it shouldn't even need to be mentioned. But rather than anyone acknowledging that Sony need to do far better, people ignored that, put their fingers in their ears and aimed for the lowest hanging fruit in the tree.
You also implied that Japanese gaming tastes mean that if Sony released a handheld then it would start to fix their problems. When the fact is that it failed as a tactic in the past.
@Naughtyottsel92 I mention owning PlayStation consoles because I have no allegiance to one platform over another. You however seem totally focussed towards PlayStation. It genuinely seems you have no objectivity. I'm not trying to start a fight with anyone.
@Naughtyottsel92 @GamingGod Really feels like you guys are flailing about trying to counter anything @SMJ says that can be construed as even mildly anti-PlayStation instead of simply acknowledging their point.
They never even said anything overtly defensive of Xbox.
@RoomWithaMoose no not flailing about anything just saying some facts. Sorry if that offends either of yo. All I commented on was the laughable fact of 29 series x sold and he’s on you like a dog on chips 😂. I’m supposed to be working anyway… have a good night
@SMJ "The Vita sold around 5 million systems in Japan compared to the 3DS selling 25 million"
Here, i give you a reminder why that happened.
> 3DS was a lot cheaper than Vita
3DS was launched at $300 / ¥25K but Nintendo cut the price drastically almost half at $190 / ¥15K after sales didn't reach the numbers Nintendo wanted. And they cut the price four months before Vita launched at $300 / ¥25K. That gave 3DS a lot of advantage and momentum against Vita.
> 3DS got DQ, MH, Pokemon, and Mario which are beloved and massive franchise in Japan while Vita doesn't even have MH to boost its selling value.
> Sony fumbled with the memory stick and then they let Vita die to focus on PS4.
> Japan always have a massive boner for Nintendo games and products. They eat and breath everything about Nintendo no matter what the quality. It doesn't matter how or what Sony and the competition offers, Japan gonna pick Nintendo over everything else. This is one if not the biggest reason why Japan market is shrinking so much and very stale to the point 3rd party publisher like Capcom, SE, Bamco, SEGA etc tried to heavily market their games outside Japan especially the west.
Ironically, Nintendo Switch success in Japan doesn't help much nor give a good impact for 3rd party devs especially for small / mid ones like Falcom. Falcom CEO even admit that Trails series is save or still alive thanks a lot to sales from western and China market.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2025/12/western-sales-have-saved-the-trails-series-falcom-boss-suggests
Nintendo Switch success in Japan feels like it exist in a big vacuum. Only Nintendo who feel the success but there's not much impact for 3rd party. Sure, any Nintendo fanboys can used Japan sales whenever they want to win the argument. But they're too blind to see the bigger picture 🤷♂️
@Naughtyottsel92
My point is because there is extremely little point.
As I said we know what’s happened to Xbox consoles, gone. So what is the point.
As where Sony and Nintendo are very prominent console sellers. And it is where the competition I guess is in the console universe.
@PuppetMaster So why will a new Sony handheld change that? That was the point.
Let’s add this for fun as we are Xbox bashing.
Even though Sony will get 30% or 20% cut from Xbox studio games sold on PS5. And this fantastic.
Xbox studios for sure this year will make more money on the PS5 platform from games than Sony will from their studios on the PS5 this year 2026.
Just count Xbox studio games probably coming to PS5 this year and the money.
@PuppetMaster Doesn't explaining why the 3DS sold better than the Vita in Japan just...strengthen SMJ's claim that it did, in fact, sell notably better in Japan?
What's the point of saying all this?
Attitudes to gaming are different in Japan in a lot of ways. The number 1 driver for those Switch sales are kids though. I don’t know about the west but kids in Japan are almost 100% buying a Switch over PS5.
I teach kids here and I’d say it’s like 1 in 50 or less want a PS5. Some kids say their Dad has a PS5.
I’d imagine among adults sales are similar across Switch and PS5.
@GamingGod Well, hope to see you next week when you'll have another opportunity to point out the Xbox's abysmal Japanese sales regardless of whatever context or perspective is presented by the article and/or commenters.
@OldGamer999 Also count how many more gamers who would have chose Xbox but go to Playstation instead because of those Microsoft games coming to Playstation, plus Wolverine, Saros, Marvel Tokon etc
Microsoft will make money off Playstation players but Sony will be getting more players, resulting in more subs and microtransactions in return.
Id say it's a win win for revenue for both of them, reputation wise though, not the same.
@RoomWithaMoose 🫡
Uff... the Switch 2 is selling like crazy there.
I don't know the PS4 pro numbers there, but the PS5 might surpass the PS4. This gen is still gonna be around for a few more years.
@UltimateOtaku91
Yep it should be a win win for both of them.
But it’s a funny business that is why I strongly believe rips us gamers off money wise.
One minute console makers claim they lose money per console sold next minute they publish they make money per console sold.
Then claim costs have gone up, put prices up and then reports show they make more money selling consoles and increased profits per console sold.
Us gamers are really getting it this generation.
Also at the same time TV prices are stable and some are reduced. Cars have gone down in price and white goods are a good price.
And they use chips and electronics.
UK by the way.
@GamingGod I actually thought it said "-29"... as in, 29 people returned one to the store xD
@SMJ Maybe it will change that and it can do better than PS4/5 if Sony do it right compare to what they've done with Vita? Who knows. If Sony wants to try again with a new handheld then let them be, considering before Vita they did really well with PSP and PS Portal also doing well as far as i remember.
But I fail to see what's the point of your question here. If Sony really can change their situations in Japan with a new handheld then as a gamer shouldn't you be happy that Nintendo get better competition?
Or that's not good for you and make you angry, which would be weird if that's what you really feel considering you claim you own all PS consoles and no allegiance to anything. Yeah, as if owning every PS consoles will stop you from being a Nintendo / Xbox / PC fanboys lol.
@Naughtyottsel92 "I've got Xbox fanboy friends who do nothing but put down PS and Nintendo but still buy their consoles in the end and vice versa"
Yup. It's true that owning every consoles doesn't stop you from being a fanboy.
I've also got some diehard Nintendo fanboy friends who also do nothing to mock PS and praise Nintendo to the moon every time they post in their timeline. But somehow they keep buying PS consoles lol. Heck, they even bought a lot of PS accessories from limited DS to expensive headphone that i'm as a PS fans never own.
@SMJ
You do understand that none of this means you reason objectively. You may not notice this about yourself, but you argue with as much of a bias as all the people you usually accuse of being biased.
What makes it problematic is you dont even acknowledge your own bias at all. You only accuse others of bias, immediately label them as fanboys, and assume your stance is the most reasonable one.
And i dont mean that in a mean spirited way. It’s just genuinely a pattern that i and many here pick up, and trust me it has nothing to do with which systems you own.
Frankly, someone can own none of the systems and still have good faith, logical and nuanced discussion. The fact that you even think that objectivity has anything to do with the gadgets you own already shows that you dont get it
@PuppetMaster I have said several times in this thread that I want Sony to do far better and succeed. I'm gutted about the way they dropped the Vita like a stone and even more gutted the way that they never gave the PSVR2 any kind of support at all.
I have also said in many times in other threads that my favourite series of all time on any system is Uncharted.
Why can't I be more annoyed by what Sony currently does than other platform holders without being called a fanboy?
@LogicStrikesAgain Me owning multiple PlayStation consoles and my favourite game series ever being Uncharted surely demonstrates I have a passion for PlayStation games. But surely I'm also allowed to believe that Sony are coasting this generation and not giving me value for money without being labelled and Xbox or Nintendo fanboy.
Every time I say a single negative thing about the way Sony is doing things I get accused of bias because it doesn't fit someone else's narrative of "PlayStation is the best and Sony can do no wrong!"
That's where I think others need to grow up.
@SMJ I think the reality is PS5 is doing just fine in Japan compared to similar TV based consoles. Not amazing, but just fine enough.
The trouble is Japan has become more and more a handheld market so comparing the PS5 and Switch 1 or 2 is like comparing apples and oranges and doesn’t make much sense.
@SMJ simple, you are one and the fact that you can't see it is incredible.
You whine on every article when someone talks negatively about Xbox but then back up some truly weird fanboys on PureXbox for minor issues that involve Sony.
@SMJ Yeah, you're past all reasoning with. The fact you can't see the hypocrisy here is baffling.
@themightyant I also compared PS Vita to 3DS. One sold 5 times more than the other.
Also, I've just checked, in Japan 20% of players play only in docked mode. 30% of players play only in handheld mode. 50% of players state they play handheld and docked equally. So that means that 70% of Switch players use it as a "TV console" as you call it.
@Naughtyottsel92 Your total lack of objectivity and inability to understand anything negative about PlayStation is truly boring.
You don't debate. You sneer and act superior without any facts to back it up.
@SMJ comparing Vita - a console that wasn’t supported well and was cut short - to one of the most successful handhelds of all time (3DS) is hardly a fair fight. We can all cherry pick data if we wanted. LMAO.
Everybody knows TV based consoles are diminishing in Japan, since the PS1/PS2 era it’s been downhill, this is just a simple fact, not just for Sony but Nintendo too, whose decline in this area started even earlier. But comparing like for like the reality is the ONLY non-Sony TV console that has sold more than PS5 in Japan in the last 30+ years is the Wii. Just 5 years in PS5 has already outsold every other Nintendo TV console in that time and it’s just behind PS4 launch aligned. Hence why I said it’s doing just fine in Japan.
I think you are letting your own disappointment cloud your judgement here, you claim to be objective but are dismissing the obvious.
@themightyant Vita vs 3DS was absolutely a fair fight. The 3DS succeeded because Nintendo supported it and third parties flooded towards it on the back of that success. The Vita failed because Sony didn't support it and third parties avoided it on the back of that failure.
Sony had a massive hit with the PSP and then dropped the ball with the Vita. Microsoft dropped the ball when going from Xbox 360 to Xbox One. Nintendo dropped the ball when going from Wii to Wii U.
All fell for different reasons but the management of those consoles didn't work because of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. They were all to blame.
Also, the Switch IS a TV console to the majority of Japanese gamers.
Personally, I never use my Switch in handheld mode but that's a different matter.
@themightyant
'Kay.
...Wot?
Can we compare the PS5 to previous PlayStations in Japan? Is that fair? In that comparison, we can clearly see Sony completely lost its stranglehold on its home country. A stranglehold so strong that the only competing home console from the last 30+ years to outsell the modest-at-best sales of the PS5 was the worldwide phenomenon Wii. Regardless of how we got here (I know you're already thinking of saying we can't compare the PS5 to previous PlayStations because the home console market has shrunk there. We just can't compare anything to anything), that's still the PlayStation brand losing A LOT of strength in Japan. That happening wasn't an inevitability.
I don't know why I keep checking this thread out of curiosity. It's getting increasingly more exhausting to read through every time. My guy SMJ didn't even bring up the Xbox or the Vita, and now people are telling them their comparisons are unfair and they always defend Microsoft.
@SMJ Why would you be more annoyed at what Sony currently do than what other platforms does considering this gen Sony did much better than MS and at some aspect they also did better than Nintendo? For examples:
But i guess for you Sony didn't do anything good in this gen compare to MS and Nintendo. That's why you annoyed more at Sony compare to MS and Nintendo, am i right?
Your "i owned every PS consoles and didn't have any allegiance" doesn't look good here buddy. I don't think saying Uncharted is your all time favorite can convince me that you're neutral and wants Sony to do better either 🤷♂️
@SMJ as you said yourself “they dropped Vita like a stone” so why compare it against the 3DS when trying to show you are being balanced. @LogicStrikesAgain had it right.
@RoomWithaMoose I didn’t say you can’t compare them, just that it’s not a fair fight. Should we compare Wii U to PS4, Virtual Boy to PS1 and expect to gain something useful from the comparison? No of course not.
All I am saying it that the PS5 is doing just fine in Japan as based against every other non-Sony TV console in the last 30+ years, only one has sold more. Whereas comparing it to handheld sales is pretty useless.
@themightyant Yes, we should compare the Wii U to the PS4 and the Virtual Boy to the PSone. An inability to learn anything from those comparisons is a failure of imagination, not the comparisons inherently.
Just did some digging and this is the current state of sales with TV vs Handheld
Total hardware sold in Japan
Handheld only
Sony (2) - 25,595,000
Nintendo (5) - 114,502,000 (includes Switch Lite)
TV only
Sony (5) - 70,708,000
Nintendo (9) - 69,690,000
Hybrid
Sony (0) - 0
Nintendo (2) - 33,735,000
The best four selling systems in Japan all had handheld capability (GBC, Switch, DS and 3DS), which just goes to show Japanese prefer handheld gaming over the traditional console. This is why I think it's important for Sony to release a new handheld alongside the PS6, and make sure it's capable of running the latest Monster Hunter.
@PuppetMaster First of all, games being digital isn't a deal-breaker for me. Most of the world now only buys their games digitally. Is that what I wanted? No. Have I made my peace with it? Yes.
Secondly, Astro's Playroom is a great showcase/demo but not a reason to buy a PS5. I completely agree that Nintendo should have definitely made the boring Welcome Tour a freebie. How they dare to charge for it baffles me (but I suspect they've become complacent after the Switch 1 success).
Sony's AAA games do receive great discounts after launch and this has always been a major frustration for me when buying Nintendo games. I paid £38 for Zelda Echoes of Wisdom the other day (well after release). The only thing I would say to counter that is that Nintendo games tend to hold a much higher value if you're ever selling them on. I suppose that's the trade off.
I genuinely don't think Sony have done anything particularly well this generation for me, the gamer. Yes they've made better profits than ever but that doesn't affect me.
Their first party output has been less than any other generation. They've spent billions chasing live service games which has taken money and time away from the games I think most PlayStation fans want to play. They've overcharged for hardware (as have Microsoft) and yet the differences between PS4 and PS5 has basically been the SSD. Most players I know turn off the "amazing" adaptive triggers and controller speaker. The battery life on the DualSense is still terrible. I paid £530 for a PSVR2 and have had 1 first party game.
PS+ is a terrible deal for someone like me because if I like a game, I'll buy it. I don't want to wait for access it 2 years down the line with a subscription fee.
They even took away free cloud saves from me which meant when I had to sell my OG PS5 because I lost my job, I lost all of the progress I'd made across 3 years of gaming.
Those are my personal opinions anyway.
A special comments section this… in more ways than one 😏. Encore ENCORE 😋
@themightyant Sony supported the PSP and it succeeded. Sony didn't support the PS VITA and it failed.
Third party developers realise that if the system's own manufacturer can't be bothered then why should they.
Sony affected the view of the Vita in the media and industry.
@UltimateOtaku91 If those figures are correct it makes it even more ridiculous that Sony didn't support the Vita properly. The PSP was a smash hit in Japan and they missed a trick in not supporting the Vita in the same way.
Let's not forget, Monster Hunter became a huge hit on PSP but made the switch (no pun intended) to Nintendo consoles after the PSP. Nintendo didn't sign any exclusivity deals. Capcom just followed the money. It's down to each hardware manufacturer to make their platform the most desirable to make money on.
Also, if making handhelds is such a guarantee of success in Japan, why was there no follow up to the Vita? Why didn't Sony double down and make another handheld to claim that obvious market?
@SMJ I have no idea why Sony gave up the handheld market, either they decided not to care about the Japanese market and focus on the West, or they knew they had no chance against Nintendo's cheap hardware and game development as Sony were chasing TV console like graphics over fun in my opinion, which would have put some developers off.
But they needed Monster Hunter to be successful, that game pretty much carried the PSP over there. Vita not having that series pretty much killed it on its own.
@Max_the_German @SMJ
The funny thing is Sony as a company is almost dead last in TV sales, middle of the pack in headphone sales and jumped out of a ton of markets over a decade ago due to low sales. The PS is the only thing the company can brag on these days and the fans sure do that for them. Normally by mocking whomever isn’t selling well at the time, Wii-u or now Xbox.
But since i like Xbox i want to share MS’s last hope in Japan, with the next Xbox being a Console/PC and MS making a high end one with other OEM’s making their’s rumored to be in the affordable to insane priced ones. What if Samsung or other popular brand in Japan makes a Xbox branded PC and that takes off a little more for them. Japan is growing in PC and is for sure handheld haven. Hey Japanese players here’s a Samsung or whoever branded Xbox PC that runs all your PC titles AND PS titles from steam. Not saying it’s a slam dunk, but i think it would have the chance to move a few more sales than just an Xbox. I’ve been on here saying for a while, PC, handheld and cloud is the future, when’s that future well i don’t know but if RAM prices stay 300% marked up and climbing, there is a big push to cloud and other forms cause owning raw compute power will simply be to much for a lot of players and kids. I own all 3 but after this gen Sony has to do something to earn my money cause i never liked their controllers and their games are on Steam where i can use a controller i like and sad dad sims are getting a little stale and they couldn’t make, buy or pin the tail on a donkey of a live service game.
@HonestHick Once again, the voice of reason. Good to hear from you again. 👍
People are going in on Xbox sales numbers, which, of course, were never going to be good when the price cut/significantly more powerful PS5 is barely outselling the almost 9-year-old Switch, lol.
That's the true levels of fanboy delusion/defection right there.
This is what happens when you close all your Japanese studios and move your head office to the US. SIE is no longer a "Japanese giant" like Push Square always claimed; it's an "American giant" now.
@darylb24 well it’s a Japanese company with a turnover of 90bn dollars a year. That’s pretty giant and pretty Japanese 🫣
PS5 (Slim model) sales was pretty decent this week.
@SMJ good to hear from you my friend. Wishing you and your loved ones a great 2026. You know the 2026 that this site has article's on Fable and Forza Horizon 6. I guess i would too if Marathon is the next “big” title on the way. Wolverine should be decent but good lord could we chill with Marvel Marvel Marvel Marvel from that studio. Hard for me to get interested even tho i am sure it will be a solid game even tho the controller will make my left thumb sore after 30 mins. HAHA
@GamingGod SIE's global head office is in the US.
@HonestHick All the best to you and yours and I hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year too. I agree that I'm Marvelled out too. I've seen nothing of Blade but I'm already kind of bored of the idea of it.
I love my PlayStation but good god, the DualSense is a shockingly uncomfortable controller. Awful shape, unnecessary features and shocking battery.
Anyway, good to hear from you again. Take care.
@darylb24
Xbox sold around 150 consoles, and Playstation sold around 45K. You’re saying people should not focus on xbox sales compared to switch, but they should focus on ps5 sales compared to switch.
Yes you’re right, that is indeed the true level of fanboy deflection right there
@SMJ I’ve owned every PS since PS1 and never liked any of their controllers. But Dual sense is not it for me. I was at a friends house playing Borderlands 4 on PS5 and my thumbs were touching and running it one another. Even he agreed that off set sticks are more comfy but he got a PS5 cause his other friends did. I am hoping PS6 does someting for me that no PS ever has and that’s make a controller i don’t want to put down after 30-45 mins. Not holding my breathe. However i am looking forward to seeing what PSSR 2.0 does. Some info is leaking on that and it looks to be good and yes i don’t care what marvel games are coming to any platform i am just not very interested. I want to see them do something new and have to use some creativity.
@darylb24 Sony is a Japanese company
@HonestHick I’m sure there are companies that make Ps controllers with the strange Xbox layout
@themightyant
>> comparing Vita - a console that wasn’t supported well and was cut short - to one of the most successful handhelds of all time (3DS) is hardly a fair fight. We can all cherry pick data if we wanted. LMAO. <<
I don’t see this as cherry picking. These are the last two dedicated handheld systems. Sony made a bad decision with the menory, and the software support was poor as hell, with cheap imitations of the big AAA PS games, made by other studios.
Nintendo on the other hand put an extraordinary focus on 3DS due to the failure of Wii U. Would there be a Smash 3DS under normal circumstances? I don’t think so.
So in the end, Nintendo pushed the Japanese gaming habits even more towards mobile gaming with great software support due to the worldwide failure of Wii U. Sony did the opposite. And then came Switch. I find that remarkable!
@SMJ Incredible.
Here's some facts for you then.
1. You're the one doing exactly what you accuse others of doing "acting snide and superior"
2. Only one brand is in danger of leaving the console market and it's not PS or Nintendo.
3. People here point out Xbox because of people like you and others on PureXbox putting down PS on every little occasion for no reason.
4. The only reason Microsoft finally have games if because they spent $80 billion or so on massive publishers so they can slap their logo on multiplatform games.
I honestly don't know why you're on PushSquare because looking at your comment history, it's just putting down PS fans on every small occasion but defending Xbox to an inch of your life.
@Naughtyottsel92 Here are facts:
1. I don't actually come across as snide and superior. I am fortunate enough to be able to own multiple systems. Your opinion isn't a fact.
2. Yes Xbox will absolutely leave the console market first. PlayStation will be a close second. Nintendo will be last (as they usually are) to understand where the industry is heading.
3. I couldn't give a flying **** about "putting down" PlayStation. As is clear from all of my previous posts. I love PlayStation games.
4. The only reason Sony have any games is because they acquired the developer or publisher. Sony made the PlayStation back in 1994 and had no internal studios so they bought them. But because Microsoft bought a publisher (many years ago btw) that doesn't count in your eyes. Sony also spent billions on Bungie.
If you are so interested in my comment history then I suggest you stop picking and choosing things that you think gives you the upper hand.
I've been posting here since 2008. I would love for you to read all of my 3500+ comments. But you won't. You'll pick and choose the ones that you care about and then try to attack me. That says far more about you.
But thanks for calling me incredible.
@SMJ Nintendo left the console market years ago due to failure after failure. And by recent stats on switch 2 as seen on even NL, the switch 2 ain’t doing so great now all the fanboys have got one. You’ve made your point bro, you don’t know what you’re talking about we get it yeah 👍🏻
In unsurprising news, the PS5 is being utterly battered by the Switch 2 in Japan.
Those Xbox numbers are dire - I'm just waiting for the PS4 to either overtake them or drop so low that they're selling even less than the old stager.
@GamingGod i bought and returned one. It was expensive but not very well made. I am still in search of a good Xbox/Switch layout pad for PS5. You forgot to mention Switch on the layout. 😀
@HonestHick I don’t use switch’s they are for my kids I’ve no idea what the layout is tbh. I take it it’s the same as Xbox then? Did Sony patent the symmetrical layout for symmetrical hands then
@GamingGod This comment is the absolute definition of what's wrong with the games industry and why it will always be seen as a lesser form of art compared to film or music. Well done "Bro".
@SMJ 🙈. Sorry but you saying Nintendo will be the last to leave the console market… I just couldn’t not reply to that. Laughable. Shall I list nintendos failures for you in the console game or do you actually know them all? Or maybe you’d like to read up on nintendos shares taking a dive recently and that’s in Japan. But keep trash talking PS if it makes you feel better ‘bro’ 👍🏻. I promise this is the last reply you’ll get from me .
@GamingGod a dad should know what his kids are playing so even tho you don’t play it. Yes i would have thought you’d know that. However Sony is using the Nintendo PlayStation design controller since PS1 and when the analog stick became a thing there was no room for it other than the bottom. Hence the first dual shock. They stuck to that layout and build their controller chassis’s around that. It works and i can use it. But it’s not my preferred. Not sure Sony patent it cause other controllers use it as well. But Sony did recently patent AI playing your game for you. I seen that.
Sorry to butt in, but that is not a fact, and i hate to break it to you, but it’s also not true. I’m sure many people here that know how you argue would definitely say you come across as snide and superior
Good thing is that Japan is only a fraction of the console worldwide market. PS5 is doing great in general almost everywhere.
@SMJ
2. Uh huh, you keep believing that mate.
@GamingGod I'm saying that Sony will leave the console business before Nintendo because they're smarter than Nintendo. I still believe that bespoke hardware will be irrelevant after PS6. Microsoft will go there first and then Sony will follow when they realise how much more money they could make without spending billions on hardware.
Nintendo are always slower to adopt gaming trends and they (their shareholders) will move towards that future at a snail's pace but eventually will get there.
@Naughtyottsel92 Genuine question. How long do you think bespoke hardware will exist?
@zebric21 Japan is the third largest video game market on Earth. 🤔
@SMJ For Sony isn't anymore. That's why they try to crack China and India to expand the market.
@HonestHick lol really? What’s the point of that
@zebric21 Okay. Again, this is a genuine question. Why do you believe that Sony would want to carry on making bespoke hardware (aka PlayStation consoles) after the PS6?
@GamingGod They did. They've made AI that will play for and get you through the difficult parts of a game. The whole idea is ridiculous.
@GamingGod the AI patent. I guess so people that aren’t good at games can still “play” and have help. Seems lame, i am not a AI fan so i kind of want it out of my consoles. But that’s not going to happen. I think Sony will be less pushy with it than MS since MS own’s copilot. But Sony will have features on PS6 as well. Thankfully Nintendo will be the least. You say you don’t like the Switch but i am loving Switch 2 so far. Playing Red Dead on it now and at 60fps and 1440P it’s a nice experience. I have nothing to complain about, outside of Nintendo charging $80 for Mario Kart. I got it for $50 with the console and played around 25 hours of it and it’s great fun but it’s not $80. I am not even sure the hardest of hardcore Mario Kart fan’s would say it’s $80 good, but then again Fanboys will go hard for their color plastic box of choice. So who know’s!
LogicStrikesAgain This is Push Square, not Pure Xbox. The deflection of failing against Switch is obvious, but we won't agree, so let's leave it there.
@themightyant Kinda butting into this discussion late, but the 3DS was actually kinda a disappointment for Nintendo commercially. It sold around 75 million units, which while great on its own, was just half of what the Nintendo DS ended up selling. Remember, that console sold around 150 million units. Nintendo lost a lot of players during the 3DS/Wii U generation, which is why the Switch was exactly what they needed.
@PuppetMaster Microsoft hasn't sold any games at $80 yet. They tried to with The Outer Worlds 2, but they changed their decision after the pushback. And considering FH6 is also $70, it seems they won't be doing $80 games in the near future.
@Questionable_Duck This is true. Although a part of the reason 3DS didn't sell as well was because Nintendo didn't stop making DS's until 2020, 3 years after the Switch released! In fact it was the same year they stop making the 3DS too. They were eating their own tail with the DS/3DS.
Another thing that held the 3DS back is there were concerns that the 3D effect could be harmful to eyes, especially children's, and that stopped adoption in their target market. I believe this was unfounded, or at least never proven, but it didn't stop it making mainline news all over the world and harming that console's sales. It's what led them to Nintendo scrambling and eventually releasing the 2DS a few years later, removing the key selling point of the console.
But I disagree "Nintendo lost a lot of players" due to the 3DS, the historic data i've seen doesn't really show that, it's just that many they were playing on DS not 3DS (similar to Sony with PS4) and it's a key reason DS sold 154 million units. Wii U is a different story.
But it was a masterstroke to combine the handheld and tv with the Switch, that combined with how hungry people were for a decent Nintendo console - many having skipped both 3DS and Wii U - meant it sold like a rocket out the game. Great for Nintendo and gamers.
