The Japanese games market is pretty much cornered by Nintendo and has been for a while, but Sony's still plugging away with PS5, and it's slowly getting better for the console.
Late last year, a new, Japan-exclusive PS5 model launched with a reduced retail price and support for the Japanese language only. It's proven to be popular, and sales numbers over the last couple of weeks have continued to grow.
According to Famitsu (thanks, Gematsu), combined sales of PS5 models reached 46,753 during the period.

By comparison, Switch 1 models totalled 46,360, so PS5 outsold it by just a hair.
These sales numbers don't really put much of a dent on Nintendo's dominance in the country, but at least things are trending in the right direction.
Here's the full rundown of hardware sales over the last two weeks:
- Switch 2 – 313,838 (4,097,905)
- Switch Lite – 18,460 (6,822,925)
- Switch OLED Model – 16,916 (9,414,838)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 36,856 (1,154,384)
- Switch – 10,984 (20,224,740)
- PlayStation 5 – 6,033 (5,875,458)
- PlayStation 5 Pro -3,864 (315,121)
- Xbox Series X Digital Edition – 149 (24,860)
- Xbox Series S – 103 (340,464)
- Xbox Series X -29 (323,884)
- PlayStation 4 – 25 (7,930,176)

Damn… those Xbox numbers though 🤣
PS4 sold almost as many as the Series X.
Buying an xbox in Japan is a similar experience to buying rude magazines over here
(from what I'm told)
Those Xbox figures are embarrassing, and to think they still put on a yearly TGS showcase to win over the Japanese players 😬, to no avail every time.
I love how people are mocking Xbox sales numbers when the PlayStation numbers are absolutely shocking compared to Nintendo. 🤔
At this rate Sony will sell just over 9 million by the end of 2027 which is near enough keeping up with the PS4 sales in Japan. All they need to do now is make a native portable console to get back more of that market.
PlayStations absolutely dominating Xbox in every sector. 25 😂😂😂 goodness sake.
Oh my bad it’s 29 😁
@SMJ Idk, is it some form of coping? People here complain about my „negativity“ towards Sony, probably because they think that being a fan must mean to cheer. I find this weird, football fans usually complain the loudest about the coach and the performance of their team.
@GamingGod Shouldn't you be more concerned about how badly PlayStation is doing against Nintendo rather than mocking Xbox (who have never had a hope in hell in Japan)?
@SMJ @Max_the_German Thank god I wasn't the only one thinking this. For a minute, I wondered if I'm just an a**.
It's just a weird deflection when we all know the Xbox doesn't sell in Japan, and the Series, in particular, doesn't sell anywhere. To the point where Microsoft obviously doesn't try to make it appealing anymore.
When the article is specifically about the PS5's numbers relative the Switch's, and cites the recent cheaper, region-blocked release, you'd think the comments would be about that.
@Max_the_German I completely agree. I want Sony to do well but the PS5 generation has been my least favourite by far. Sony have got to the stage where they can coast by with minimal effort towards their fans. It's the reason my PS3 is currently hooked up to my TV and my PS5 hasn't been switched on in months.
@RoomWithaMoose @Max_the_German I suppose it's easier to punch down towards Xbox than admit Sony are failing miserably against Nintendo in Japan.
Its an improvement, but hardly 1 to be proud of. The Switch Lite alone sold almost as many units as all PS5 combined. Sony getting absolutely thrashed by Nintendo in their home country.
It’s not great though is it?! I’m sure when they thought up this price model they expected higher sales than competing with the switch 1
