Hopefully this game gets a second wind when more consoles are made available as the fact it's PS5 only and a very hard rouguelike game limit the potential audience. If I was Sony, I'd give them another shot at a big budget game, but maybe something with more mainstream appeal or more accessible.
@Nightcrawler71 Yes, Series X running in back-compat is dynamic 4K 60FPS. The native next-gen version of the game hasn't got a release date yet. I imagine both native Series X and PS5 versions will be very similar when they get released. This is just a case of the Xbox having better back-compat support vs PS5.
@Th3solution The main rumour with Naughty Dog is they are working on The Last Of Us 1 remake for PS5 as a less stressful project to come to grips with the new hardware. Factions 2 will no doubt be cross gen and possibly also on PC from what some rumours claim, which sort of makes sense if it does end up being a F2P game.
@Th3solution I doubt they would have worked on this patch if there was a native PS5 version in the works, that we all know would be charged full price as a 'remaster'.
I think Factions 2 will be a F2P game in all honesty. Here's a direct quote from Naughty Dog on the matter; "You will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II..."
@Bocking87- I think people are disgruntled because these £70 Sony launch games can be had for MUCH cheaper already on disc. This is just Sony trying to make up the lost revenue from the PS5 Digital console sales.
The best option for people is to buy a full fat PS5 and buy the first party games second hand on disc. These are just CEX prices. Games can be had for even cheaper on Ebay. Demon Souls - £45 Spiderman MM - £30 Godfall - £28 Sackboy - £45
£60 is actually not bad for Demon Souls if you only have a PS5 Digital like myself. If you buy wallet top ups from Shopto or similar, you'll pay around £53-54. Obviously not as good as psychical, as you can get a 2nd hand copy for £45 or less.
@Col_McCafferty The issue with your points is the PS5 back-compat and money.
1. If HZD 60FPS isn't as simple as changing code, that means it needs a native PS5 SKU, which takes a TON of time and extra money to make. Sony would then probably need to charge full price for a 'remaster'. 2. PC is only getting older games at the moment that have dried up in terms of sales on PS4, so it's a simple way to gain more revenue from an older product.
@Richnj Finally someone who understands the evolving world of game economics. The reality is you have PlayStation and Xbox that have two completely different approaches this generation and they can't really be compared in the traditional sense anymore.
For me the solution for the saves is quite simple. At the start of the game, offer 2 modes.
Mode 1 = Play as originally intended by developer with no saves
Mode 2 = Quick Saves enabled, but trophies disabled
That way, the developer can keep that 'Souls' appeal but the game is also made accessible for a much wider audience that probably don't care about trophies anyway.
@CielloArc I think you are getting confused between a marketing deal and a timed exclusive deal.
A marketing deal just means they pay to actually market the game for the developer as part of trying to push their console brand. See Sony with RE Village and Xbox with Scarlet Nexus as recent examples. Both have timed demos as well as part of the deal.
A timed exclusive deal means they are paying for the game to be exclusive to their console for a set amount of time.
@mucc I think it's just different goals from Sony and MS that have different business plans. You can't really hate either approach.
Sony want to fill the blanks between first party titles so go with timed exclusives. They also have the possibility to lure people to your platform.
MS are trying to sell a subscription service so need LOTS of first party content to build subscriber numbers. To do that they need more studios developing lots of exclusive games.
This is why I'm now regretting getting the PS5 Digital. Literally bought a PS5 simply for the exclusives, and 6 months later, no discounts. The only next gen exclusive I've purchased is Spiderman MM Ultimate Edition and I've pre-ordered R&C Rift Apart. And I only got those because you can buy £70 worth of PSN credit from CDKeys for just under £64.
Luckily I grabbed one in December. Never would have imagined stock issues would be still an issue 6 months after launch.
My mate managed to grab one from Argos last week, but he had a stock informer app and works nights so managed to grab one during his break. I imagine it's much more difficult for your average joe working 9-5.
Can't wait!
I think this will be THE biggest PS5 exclusive since Spiderman MM in terms of mainstream appeal.
@HMazzy111
Absolutely no chance Returnal could run on PS4.
The game is internally rendered at 1080p, temporal upsampled to 1440p, then uses checkerboard rendering to get to 4K.
Great news on the new IPs. I just hope we have an actual variety of genres. I love the 3rd person Hollywood blockbuster games, but I'd also love some other stuff.
We need a proper western RPG now that the Bethesda games are gone from the platform. We could also do with an FPS game like when we had Resistance and Killzone. And I wouldn't say no to another game like The Getaway.
Greedy I know, but no harm in branching out genres.
@Jacko11 According to Sony it is/was when they showed us that teaser. LOL I don't think anyone realistically expects it to come out now when stuff like GT7 has already been delayed.
Sounds superb, but the issue with VR mainstream adoption has always been price, wires and games.
This sounds like it could be the same price as the PS5, or even more, which straight away makes this a hard sell. One wire is a big improvement. Games, well obviously we have no idea right now. It will need a Half Life Alyx equivalent to shift units I think.
I'm upgrading from my digital PS4 version and will be buying the DLC anyway, so this doesn't bother me. I do think it's a bit wrong in terms of the second hand market though. Resale value will be less I imagine.
@Atreus97 I highly expect Horizon 2 to be the big fall game for PS5/PS4. Perhaps an Ultimate Edition for PS5 with the original game enhanced like Spiderman since we didn't get a 60FPS patch? Who knows.
There are also rumors of a Bloodborne remaster from Bluepoint launching for PS5/PC, so that could be a surprise announcement for the E3 period.
Then we still have Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo, Stray, Sifu, GTA V next-gen, so I still think we could have a solid end to the year.
Played about 12 hours so far and had multiple hard crashes. Most recent one lost just over 2 hours progress, so I've moved onto RE Village until the game is patched to an acceptable state.
At the moment, it's a 7/10 for me, just because the game was released in an unacceptable state in my eyes.
@JJ2
Because their job is to do a technical analysis of the game, and finding the native resolution is part of that.
They aren't trying to fanboy, just state facts.
Personally, I think the game looks great. I thought it looked around 1440p until they pointed out the 1080p reconstruction. So like many others, I never would have known.
In this day and age, native resolution doesn't mean a great deal unless it's people trying to d**k wave differences between multi-format games for consoles.
@4kgk2
He had nothing but praise for the game apart from obviously going from being a PC gamer on keyboard and mouse to using a controller.
I watched the stream and thought it looked pretty cool, but then I saw the 4K footage at a later time and was blown away.
In terms of day one? Probably not, simply due to the £70 price and my huge backlog to work through. I will be 100% picking it up at some point during the year though!
@Nintendo4Sonic I've seen some feedback saying the developer is aware of the lack of save mid run, so I think they might look at a solution for this. Was hoping maybe they'd added in the day one patch...
Have they patched in any form of quick save for during a run?
I ask as this is the main deal breaker for me at the moment, as I don't have many occasions to sit and play for 2 hours straight these days and wouldn't trust putting the PS5 into rest mode!
@Dekutheevilclown Yeah, I'm quite surprised, since you didn't need any subscription to play this on PS4 vs Xbox One until recently, yet the higher attach rate is on Xbox in terms of console sold. Very strange.
Is it just must or has Sony done Returnal the dirty here?
First, Resi Evil Village is heavily pushed and marketed by them to the point Returnal's social media campaign is sort of left in the background. Then they release the Rachet and Clank trailer yesterday to blow up online followed by a State of Play focus 1 day before Returnal's launch. Let's just hope the State of Play also heavily features Returnal with maybe an accolades trailer if reviews are out by then.
Just seems very strange from Sony. The focus this week should have been a huge push for Returnal, and then drop the Rachet and Clank stuff next week.
@KnightRider1982 It's up to the devs to take advantage of the hardware. The issue is, many games won't take true advantage of this unless they are first party. I say that as many games are either cross-gen or multi-format, which means there's little incentive to spend too much time on a feature that's limited to one platform. Even PC is holding this back, as they take account for mechanical HDD never mind custom gen 4 SSD's like on PS5.
Just shows exactly why Sony are still doing cross-gen titles bar a few games. PS4 has over 114m install base. PS5 has just over 6m last time I saw, and how many of those are in scalpers hands?
The PC version show a last gen port is possible as the min specs are a GTX 1060 and i5-6600. Could easily be dynamic 1080p 30FPS on base PS4 and 1440p 30FPS on PS4 Pro.
@Juanalf Completely agree with you on all points. Not a fan of the direction PS5 is heading right now, but I'm hoping things perk up whenever Sony do their E3 equivalent event.

Absolute shocker of a month.
The PS5 game is co-op only. Squadrons is already on EA Play and the Virtual Fighter game is just an e-sports game.
Really thought Sony would have gone big with E3 next month and them not attending...
