PlayStation Studios, the group which houses renowned Sony developers like Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games, has “more than 25 titles in development for the PS5” – and “nearly half of which are entirely new [intellectual property]”. That’s according to a Wired post-mortem, which features anecdotes from key PlayStation personnel like bosses Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst.
“There’s an incredible amount of variety originating from different regions,” Hulst, who’s in charge of PlayStation Studios, said. “Big, small, different genres.”
The comments seem like a direct shot at reports earlier in the year which suggested Sony was increasingly reluctant to take creative risks with its titles. We argued at the time that the comments didn’t necessarily align with reality, but Hulst seems eager to put that particular line of discussion to bed. It’s not the first time he’s said something like this.
Still, the sheer number of titles being touted here is impressive. The platform holder has stressed on multiple occasions that it wants to double down on exclusives – and it’s announced several partnerships with new teams like Haven and Firewalk to supplement its own internal efforts – but 25 games is a lot. It means we can look forward to a bright future on PS5 for sure.

But Sony is bad they dont have different games. Now let me buy a PS5 please.
I'm curious how many of these are actual PS5 exclusives versus cross-gen and PC releases, and how many are coming from their first-party studios. Time will tell.
And I can’t wait to play them 🙌🏻
Oh boy - time to start saving cash. Sony has this generation in the bag with the PS5.
We need 25 more, let's go boys!
Well if output is close to dev times for PS4, that's pretty much the generation sorted then. Two to 4 games per studio.
@Haruki_NLI It's probably worth iterating that this will encompass everything, including PSVR2 content, but yes... Like Hulst says: "Big, small, different genres."
I think the takeaway here is that just because they don't have much announced doesn't mean they aren't very busy behind-the-scenes.
I imagine a good chunk of these could be PSVR 2 titles
Playstation make games who'd of thought
But Sony hates innovation and only wants to put out sequels. They NEVER put out new ips anymore.
If you can't tell... that was major sarcasm
I hope all of them AAA
In additional of the inde games from the second party
So, ratchet, horizon, gow, spiderman, got2, last of us, new naughty dog ip, bend, from my poor knowledge of playstation studios.
There's 8. Is kojima working on something?
Many will be VR games
Had the pleasure of meeting keeping up with my backlog at a charity do once. It was surprisingly down to earth, and VERY funny.
This is the kind of news I want to hear!! Over what period do we reckon these 25 would release? Within a 5 year period? Or 10 year period?
@MatthewJP It probably includes games developed by 3rd parties to be released under Playstation Studios (like Returnal).
Of course, out of big 3 console maker last gen, sony is the one with most new big AAA ip (horizon, days gone, death stranding, ghost of tsushima, etc)
@MatthewJP I think those games will be really great but are all quite safe and similar genres. Despite this story I still expect creativity to be down from PS4 which was down from ps3. Hopefully I’m wrong.
I hope there's a good amount of Japanese games with this.
Too bad I can't find a PS5 to play their games on it.
@RBMango In the original Wired article: According to Hermen Hulst, a Guerrilla cofounder whom Jim Ryan tapped to lead PlayStation Studios in 2019, the group has more than 25 titles in development for the PS5—nearly half of which are entirely new IP.
So it seems all are from Playstation Studios
I'm excited. Now please announce Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, and subsequently
Resident Evil Village with PSVR2 support.
Just bought a ps5, super excited to join this community. 👍
Competition is heating up!!! My body is ready
Nice. Just trying to work out the numbers. What did we get last year?....Dreams, FF7 Remake (timed), TLOU2, GoT, Miles Morales, Sackboy, and a few PSVR exclusives like Iron-man VR. Plus a couple I've probably missed so around 10 exclusives games for the year. Obviously that's with the launch of a new generation. I consider that a really good year of exclusive games.
So 25 games is probably the next 2-3 years or so sorted. Nice.
Considering how well unique exclusives and taking risks worked for Sony the last several years, why was any of this ever called into question. These people aren't dumb, they know their hand and they arent afraid to use it.
@elchebib PlayStation Studios doesn't necessarily mean first-party and PS5 exclusive though. Sackboy, Demon's Souls, Destruction All-Stars, and Returnal don't fall into the first-party PS5 exclusive category and they have the PS Studios logo on them. And although the PS Studios logo may be attached to their games, I have some doubt that the Haven Studio and Firewalk games will be PS5 exclusive forever.
@MatthewJP
Kojima is now working with xbox, I think.
I agree. But its Playstation Studios nevertheless. And these games will probably be owned by Playstation anyways and revenue will still flow to them. And I bet a big chunk of these will be PS exclusive. Regardless, it's good that they stuck a number to the amount of games under development to shut down all these negative news recently.
Bring them on Sony, hope Nintendo are doing the same though.
@Ssimsim No one. But some one would’ve.
I have the feeling they’ll still be making walking narrative simulators with different skins. I doubt they’ll make something fresh. I’m more interested in what third party developers are up to because third party exclusives are the only reason I got a PS4 back then.
@RBMango You know that Haven is available on every other system right?
@Akurusu I think you don’t understand the definition of walking simulator.
It's fantastic that about 10 new IPs are in development. That makes me wonder though....what are the other half about??? Which IPs?
🤔
@Akurusu I was referring to Jade Raymond's Haven Studio.
Playstation showcase, lets go!!
@Hordak Likewise. But, chances are we'll be able to get one at the same time all of these new titles start coming out, so I'm not even mad.
In the PS5s life so far there have already been 5 exclusives. 5! And it’s been out for 6ish months. Crazy output, I don’t know how people can be doubtful towards the future.
I understand great games shouldn't be rushed but I really hope we see some of them this year.
@RBMango ohhhhh
@Akurusu That's my bad. I'll go back and edit it for clarity.
Great news on the new IPs. I just hope we have an actual variety of genres. I love the 3rd person Hollywood blockbuster games, but I'd also love some other stuff.
We need a proper western RPG now that the Bethesda games are gone from the platform.
We could also do with an FPS game like when we had Resistance and Killzone.
And I wouldn't say no to another game like The Getaway.
Greedy I know, but no harm in branching out genres.
@blinx01 yeah i want a first party JRPG. Its been years since we got one.
I still see Horizon Zero Dawn as Sony's first party RPG series so not sure they will be looking at making another.
Guerilla are apparently working on a shooter and that new partnership with firewalk studios will most likely be an FPS too
You know, you always hear about how new IPs are risky, but Sony not making new IPs is very risky in the long-term. Look at what happened to MS because they didn't focus on new IPs.
@Rob_230 How about a first-party RPG that doesn't have RPG mechanics shoved in for the sake of it? Horizon gained nothing but a lack of difficulty balance from being an RPG. Upgrades would have been fine. Also, the upgrade tree had so many dumb things like gathering plants while mounted or pulling someone off a ledge it was amazing - don't make a big upgrade tree to be an RPG if you don't have enough meaningful things to put in it. Horizon is a perfect example of a game with a lot of good aspects following a fad in unneeded ways.
Resistance trilogy.sly Cooper collection.sunset overdrive remake.syphon filter.make it happen sony.word up son
@Akurusu. Surely you dont know PlayStation.if i was you i would stick to Nintendo and x box😳😂🤔😴.i will stick to the g.o.a.t 👑 PlayStation.word up son
Just pointing out that the author of this article also wrote an article on this website claiming that Sony was no longer taking risks and was only focused on giant AAA games. That narrative started here.
Hope they come with a free ps5. : )
Sony have a good track record on new IPs. But I'm still waiting on that Uncharted 5 announcement, then maybe I'll get a PS5.
@Kidfried. Hes miserable.he needs help😱😳😂.theres always people like him .he should quit PlayStation.haha word up son
I guess I'm alone here when I thought, "25, that's it?" Lol
@Voltan it does, but it's not stuff like FF16 which is console exclusive. Also Returnal is a Sony IP, much like Bloodborne, Uncharted, Gravity Rush etc...Since Sony is very keen on owning IP, I'm not sure what kind of a deal they are doing with Jade's studio or the former Destiny guys, but that's kinda big if they own those IP as well, we'll see. Overall though, nothing as flashy as MS dropping 10B buying a 1000 devs in one swoop, but Sony are obviously working and not blowing smoke with "organic growth" statements.
@Omnistalgic Yeah, I suspect the Jade Raymond thing is a Sony game (I think I read XDEV are now involved in that?). The multiplayer shooter thing is probably not.
I am SHOCKED!!! SONY is working of loads of games for the PS5??? NO WAY!!! I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING!!!
Destructoid has really been breaking Sony’s balls lately. I’m good with it though because if enough people start complaining then we get info about how it’s not true (like this) or they change direction (like the PS3 store).
Whatever happened to the Silent Hill rumor? Come on Sony, force Konami into it. Make em an offer they can’t refuse.
@Voltan Yeah that would be my guess but the Gameindustrybiz article made it sound like Firewalk is getting the first party treatment. https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2021-04-22-playstation-signs-aaa-multiplayer-game-from-former-destiny-veterans
@doctommaso Simple. You get a protagonist who probably just got done mourning someone in the first hour or is going to. Then you have them placed slightly to the left with a third-person over the shoulder camera and you just keep holding forward and pressing X until something cool happens. Oh! Let’s not forget stopping every five minutes of gameplay to talk about something
PS4 was the first video game generation (since I started gaming in the 80's) where I simply didn't have time to play every game I wanted to. I'm still working through my backlog to this day so as an adult with limited time, this upcoming PS5 catalogue is both exciting and terrifying at the same time!
@Akurusu Yeah, we're not playing the same game.
@torne And what if all these new IP's are over the shoulder story simulators.. hardly innovative if they are.
@playstation1995 They so need to bring back Resistance and Syphon Filter.
@theMEGAniggle Can you name them?
@S1ayeR74
Hi man.
Yes he can!
Joke aside though, you made realise that the article title is misleading/incorrect. The original statement was mention of 25 titles in development for PS5. That doesn't necessarily mean they are PS5 exclusives. Some are PlayStation exclusives on PS4 and PS5 and I think that's what he meant too.
And that's how you get false narratives and people calling Jim Ryan a liar and such.
Seven is "almost half" 😂
@Akurusu Yeah, that's a load of bollocks mate. Sod off to Xbox where you can just shoot aliens for the rest of time.
😉
@Col_McCafferty I don’t have an Xbox bro. I don’t know what it is with you people jumping to the Xbox thing whenever someone talks about your PlayStation overlords. Just because I’m a PlayStation fan doesn’t mean I have to worship them and like everything they put out.
@S1ayeR74 sure thing
Demon souls
Miles Morales
Sackboy
Destruction all stars
Returnal
Odd world: soul storm (I didn’t count this one)
Now I guess you’ll say miles and sackboy aren’t exclusives, fair. Then that’ll be 3 exclusives in 6 months which is still pretty good. Still got R&C, Horizon, GOW all to come supposedly this year so that wouldn’t be a bad start at all.
@KippDynamite glad I’m not the only realising what it is they do. Constantly flip flopping for clicks
@theMEGAniggle I couldn't think of them hence the question. I still class Myles as DLC. But still it's a full game.
SackBoy I think is the best of that lot. I've been enjoying my Series X, grateful I've actually got one of the new gen systems, I haven't bothered with the stress of trying and failing to get a PS5. But will be keen to see if a new Uncharted is announced. Or Syphon Filter or Resistance (all 3 would be ace). Looks like it's worth waiting for a PS5 Slim or see if a redesign happens next year at this point.
Is one of these games legend of dragoon remake!??
@S1ayeR74 thing is unless you haven’t played miles morales there’s no way could class it as a DLC. It feels like such a step up, got me really excited for Spider-Man 2.
That’s nice man, was going to get both but PS5 had games. What you been playing on your Series X?
Sackboy is definitely not the best of them. It’s been Returnal and Miles for me. Others could make a point for Demon Souls but not me.
@theMEGAniggle I've been playing a lot of the games on Game Pass, a lot of older classics. But I've finished Watch Dogs Legion, got it for £15 in a sale, and currently in Resi Village. Also going through Cyberpunk, and Gears Of War 3, State Of Defay 2. Also play COD MW team death match. Oh and the Gears 5 DLC.
I would prefer the platforming of SackBoy I think. I didn't get on with SpiderMan before. Demon Souls and Returnal would probably have me throwing the controller across the room lol. I understand they are difficult. Well Returnal has no save feature as such.
On PlayStation I prefer the slower paced games like Uncharted.
@S1ayeR74 that’s got to be the best thing about Xbox. I was going to get one to play old games but I never had a 360 and my PS3 works fine. Ahh in that case yeah, look out for ratchet and clank too that would be your sort of thing too. How comes you don’t line Spider-Man? It’s a masterpiece!
Listen, returnal is not for the weak hearted. I almost punched my tv once. It’s such a good game and I understand what they were trying but someone has to add a save feature. Or randomise the biomes that you start in because you really do spend 2-6 hours on a single run if you want it to be good.
@theMEGAniggle Don't know, I've played lots of PS exclusives and I didn't really like Horizon, Spider Man, God Of War although I ordered it's older over the top gameplay style. But I do like Days Gone and really enjoy Uncharted, also TLOU 1, I won't go into part 2.. but I did finish it.
So I'll wait for a new Uncharted game before deciding if it's worth the stress of trying to buy a PS5 haha, I'll probably just wait for the slim though.
HYPE if most of these are AAA quality games with strong narrative and such. Bonus points for good combat/traversal etc.
@HMazzy111 Most likely within 5-7 years...though I suspect some of these are not full length AAA games.
@S1ayeR74 that’s fair, I wouldn’t bet on the new uncharted games having the same flair as the previous ones if it’s not being developed by naughty dog
