While it’s certainly not affecting everyone, a number of Returnal players are experiencing crashes while playing the game. This is something Housemarque has acknowledged, although it’s suggested that the PlayStation 5 is the problem – and not necessarily the game. Writing on Discord, a spokesperson said: “This is an issue with the platform. We've sent our report to [Sony]. Specifically, it has something to do with the pre-start system.” We haven’t got a clue what the pre-start system is, but that doesn’t sound good, does it?
In more positive news, the Finnish developer is already aware of and investigating a number of other minor issues, including audio glitches, control mapping errors, and a bug with the pre-order suit. Its full post on Discord is reproduced below:
- Game does not have a save option
The game team is aware of the issue. There’s no need to bring it into our attention any more. - Not able to interact with the fabricators and not able to pass through doors
If you are using a pre-order suit. Enter the pause menu and select “Restart your run”. Select the plain Selene suit in your spaceship. (Your run will be aborted, but any permanent progress and weapon upgrade progress is kept.) - Audio issues
Audio may be too loud or cut off completely. - Barnacles not appearing visually
Invisible barnacles may stalk the map and suck you up, even though you can’t see them. - After remapping controls, some interactions may not work
Custom control mapping may prevent you from reading items in the house, cleansing chests or other interactions. To fix the issue (for now), use default controller settings.
The crashing error is a big bummer, so hopefully Sony can put out a firmware update soon to smooth this over. Have you had any problems with Returnal since release? Document your discoveries in the comments section below.

Oh dear, not good if it’s on the system level. Hopefully Sony themselves get right on that.
Yup. Two hour run that had excellent weapons and perks brought to a halt right before a boss. Crashed going into a menu. Guess I’ll try reinstalling since that was the fix they suggested there.
Yikes! Doesn’t sound good at all!! Hopefully it’s resolved soon.
Nothing like releasing a game exclusively on a system, only for the system to crash your game!
Something on a platform level...but only effecting the one game?
@thefourfoldroot If the bug is in Sony’s SDK, all they can really do is either let Sony know and hope they fix it or release a patch that works around the bug on Sony’s side.
Back during the PS5’s launch, Streets of Rage 4 would crash at the stage complete screen each time. I thought it was a game problem but it was a system problem that was fixed with the next PS5 update.
There are weird problems that can seemingly only affect a particular game for whatever reason.
This should all be sorted for the christmas sale.
This is concerning. If you examine every game released for PS 5 including cross platform, they have all had crashing issues. The only game I personally haven't seen crashing on the PS5 (with a ps5 version), is borderlands 3. Spiderman, demon souls, valhalla, Cyberpunk they all have crashes. I really feel like they rushed this console. It released without a ton of the advertised features, has a disc drive spinning issue, rest mode crashes, hdd issues, etc. It feels like now they are just slowly patching issues, but offering no transparency in what's going on, or time-frames for features they sold the console advertising.
As a big Cyberpunk fan, there are a lot of snarky things I’d like to say right now but I’d rather see a solution and positive outcome so hopefully Sony can figure this out and it’s not a consistent problem in the future.
Weird haven't experienced a single crash at all with any game including this one. Spider Man Demons Souls Valhalla haven't crashed at all for me personally. This said a firmware update will address this for people experiencing the crashes, fingers crossed it gets rolled out soon.
These things happen sometimes and are minor nothing to worry about here. I had certain games crash on me on my PC but after updating Windows the crashes no longer occurred, same thing here.
@KundaliniRising333 I’m…pretty sure Cyberpunk crashing isn’t Sony’s fault. Call me crazy, but…
Also, had my PS5 for a month now and haven’t had a single game crash. Both Spider-Man games, Valhalla, Immortals: Fenix Rising, Borderlands 3…
@dskatter It's a software issue with Cyberpunk rather than a system issue plus they're still in the middle of fixing it too.
@RubyCarbuncle I had the my PS5 since launched, and had experience crashing really only in native PS5 games... All my PS4 games play fine. Most of the crashing had happen in both Spider-Man games, and which was a problem at launch, but was supposable fixed in a patch.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2021/01/marvels_spider-man_miles_morales_patch_deployed_to_fix_ps5_crashes
@thefourfoldroot
Absolutely.
There are a lot of reasons this could be true. The SDK is huge and complex, with thousands of APIs. If we look at older generations, there were system API's that went completely unused.
It could also be a combination of features used in a specific way that highlights the bug; it could also be that other developers have found the issue as well; but found a work-around that worked for their game, etc...
@Floki Weird. I play the Native PS5 versions of those games too and haven't experienced any issues. I'm sorry you're having to put up with this.
@RubyCarbuncle I’m aware, read the rest of my comment.
@dskatter Ahh my bad. I'm on Mobile atm and it's 3:20am plus I'm starting to feel really sleepy now lol.
Haven't experienced a single crash, thankfully. I went back to the default skin and that seemed to solve my locked door issue. I went back and got to the second biome, so now I'm just waiting on them to patch in that mid-run saving and I'll be all good to fully commit to Returnal.
It's off-topic, but the first boss was pretty great.
Strange I've played 18 hours and not a single crash or bug, in fact everyone saying they have had alot of crashing issues on all ps5 games yet I think Ive had only 1 or 2 and I've played countless hours on about 10 or so games since launch maybe it's a certain batch.
I had many many more with ps4 I'm talking 100s within the first few months and they sorted that in the end, really no need to panic, just a bit annoying losing progress I'm sure it will be fixed.
Yep, I keep getting stuck in rooms and can't progress. This game is completely broken for me.
None of my doors will open, and none of the prompts to use teleporters work, and this happens really frequently even when I restart my run and switch to the base suit.
What a frickin joke. Guess I'll reinstall.
I had a weird bug that probably was my wife's fault 😆 I was mid-fast travel and she reset the internet. I landed with a black screen. I could see the map and hear the game, but I couldn't see anything. Even restarting my cycle didn't fix it. I had to completely close the game and restart. It was a good run, too 😢 😆
@Jimmer-jammer CP fan as well. You can't equalise the two. Crashes in CP were the rule, here they are the exception. But, and this is a big one, although I had probably more than 100 crashes during my playthrough of CP, the game never, NEVER, lost any of my progress (due to its phenomenal save checkpoint system). Crashes in Returnal are heart breaking. But hey, that rogue-lite way is spilling to your real life with that game. You die, you repeat from the beginning. Hahaha
Also, many PS fans playing Returnal who poopooed on xbsx' quick resume feature will understand the awesomeness of it now.
I had no idea there were problems with this game because I'm ten hours or so in and none of them have happened to me. Now I'm tense about carrying on in case it crashes on me.
@johncalmc Same here.
No crashes so far...
Sony should remove this from their store and Push Square should write articles for every day it has been absent.
I’m 5 hours in and no crashes, no bugs at all.
And this right here is why I don't trust game reviews.
Major issues, even if they end up being a temporary thing, get glossed over during the review process.
I remember Cyberpunk's glitches being called not bad, before the public got hold of it.
@Jimmer-jammer @ApostateMage
I read Jimmer-jammer saying he didn't want to resort to snark, and I thought, "hey, maybe he needs me!" And my attempt at snark was going to be something along the lines of: Housemarque better watch what they accuse Sony of, they might get banned from the store. Then I got to ApostateMage's post. Good Show!
another example never buy a game at launch you get a better cheaper version if you wait
I'm playing the disc version and have experienced at least one notable crash when the room was full of enemies and there was a lot of bullets on screen according to the video I attached to the report. Other than that I've had a flickering black screen (that might have to do with the streaming device I had attached as stopped when I restarted that), and a weapon in the daily challenge that blew out my audio in the headphones and the TV speakers.
The weird part is that some people say games crashing on PS5 is a consistent problem and I had like 5 crashes total since November. And I use the console a lot.
No crashes in Returnal so far after 9 hours. One thing I experienced was a weird stutter when those “elevator tentacles” caught me. Only happened once and went away as soon as I dashed out of them. Also there was one instance of invisible tentacles.
I have a PS5 digital edition and with the newest update not had one issue.
It even picked the right version of sack boy and Spider-Man to down load, PS5 version.
Not had one crash on any PS5 or PS4 game or system failure. Turns on and my TV on and to the right channel, works fast and perfect in the UI.
Seems cool and quiet, have it vertical.
Not one issue to report.
Have not purchased Returnal yet, but will doing so soon.
I play on a 65” Samsung QLED with cinema sound system. The sound with rear speakers makes so much gaming difference, highly recommended.
Anyway no issues at all.
Played for 11 hours total. Had my first crash, second half of the game. Picked up a resin bit in the 5th area just before the boss. Was having an amazing run too. ***** part is, need to redo area 4 to get where i was. I get the roguelike setup, but with runs that are this elaborate it’s bound to bite players in the ass without a save function (now people who have time to do massive sessions to get there)
About 5hrs in and I have had 2 issues - the locked door bug and most recently one crash whilst on my best run yet. Really frustrating to lose all I had. Hope they can sort these issues out asap and pls add a save function - runs are too long to loose everything. Still an awesome game though which really showcases PS5 in all its glory!
@Floki Hey I saw your message and thought i would reach out as I had the same issues. Do you know what error code you are getting in these games and whether it's worse with ray-tracing on? I got lots of ce-108255-1 errors with my first ps5 for ps5 games. If it is, there is a thread in the forums I've posted a fair bit on with info.
Trying to find a video on "returnal invisible barnacle" just gives me Spongebob stuff
Still can’t believe the game doesn’t have a save system and people are told to stop pointing it out!
Coupled with the crashes I hope to see it drop to £49.99, allowing people to enjoy at a more realistic price
I didn’t have any problem so far with Returnal but just once I had Demon’s Souls forever stuck on the initial splash page no matter how many times I relaunched it or cleaned the disc. Then I rebooted the console and it fixed it.
Glad I held off for now, will wait for a patch for bugs and save feature to be added.
The quicker they fix it and the add the save feature the quicker they get another sale.
Just played resident village demo, just played the village part, really enjoyed as I enjoyed resident evil 4 and reminded me of that.
Shall probably pick that up instead next week then definitely ratchet and clank and see how the Returnal big fix and save feature goes.
Also not that I’m moaning about money but resident evil village is £54.99 digitally. Which is probably where Returnal price point should be.
Experiencing none of the above, but probably not getting far enough. Cant even reach first boss 😪 this game is Hard.
The from software system solves all this issues, works fine since the original demon souls. I’m sure housemarque can implement it in 2021
I havent encountered any issues of this nature, honestly having a superb time with this game. Personally I love the tension and high risk reward of doing a perfect run including the final boss. I haven't done it yet, got close though. But every time I feel like I'm progressing, be that through better knowledge of the game systems and combat or through new persistent gear. If mid-way save system is implemented, I'll probably just stick to current setup, should Housemarque provide this change as a difficulty option.
Hmmmm come to think of it, every game I've played on PS5 has soft crashed at least once. More of an annoyance than anything else, as the games load up so fast. If there is an issue with the console, hopefully this brings it to Sony's attention and they can fix it.
@JohnnyShoulder same here, but with returnal this is too much
@thefourfoldroot It's not affecting just the one game. I've had crashes on 3 separate games now. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the CP2077 crashes were systems based too. I think the OS wasn't ready for release.
@Luigia That was tongue in cheek humour I believe.
So this is what £70 gets you, huh?! What a f***ing joke.
I had 3 or 4 crashes on Demon's Souls (70 hours), 1 crash with Miles Morales (20 hours) and I've had 2 with Returnal (about 15 hours) since buying my PS5 at launch. Is that a lot? I'm wondering if I should get my PS5 looked at before the warranty expires now.
I've found that most consoles since the PS3 crash now and then in their lifetimes, but my consoles do get fairly heavy use.
@Porkman85
You have a point if your gonna charge £70 compared to say resident evil village at £54.99 then you got to be dam well spot on with the game, bugs and save points etc.
In general though, games seem to be releasing with to many bugs etc. Developers quality control really needs to up its game.
I wish Sony and Microsoft had made a joint agreement to delay PS5/Series X|S to holiday 2021. Sure Sony would've had to delay Demon's Souls, Destruction All Stars, Returnal and Ratchet & Clank meanwhile Microsoft would've had to delay Flight Simulator (which may get delayed anyway) but we're seeing more problems with this gen already than your typical gen. Also a holiday 2021 launch may have meant fewer consoles in the hands of scalpers.
@Grumblevolcano
Public testing is part of the process believe it or not, happens with new TVs, amplifiers etc as well.
I’m glad the PS5 is here as they backed the console up with games and it’s ratchet and clank time in June and the duelsense is great when used well.
A planned delay to the PS5 may have given time to reduce the console size, that would have helped me but that’s all.
As for series x great form factor console. However after a diabolical release games wise, we are nearly 6 months in and they can’t put a decent AAA series x game together for love nor money.
@Grumblevolcano I said the same thing last year. 2020 just felt far too soon. Between the production problems and game delays, it just wasn't worth it.
Instead we could have seen the greatest new gen launch ever in 2021. It would have been fantastic.
@Richnj I felt that delay to holiday 2021 would've been best around August/September last year. That being when we saw stuff like Halo Infinite being delayed, the announcement of crossgen release for Miles Morales/Sackboy/Horizon Forbidden West, SSD slot on PS5 not unlocked until summer 2021, etc.
The list has grown since launch and this situation of Returnal crashes being a Sony hardware problem rather than just software bugs is more evidence that delay of the consoles would've been more beneficial overall.
People using performance issues to bolster their £70 price argument is so frustrating. Developers will aim to eliminate any performance issues regardless of price right?
If I were to total up crashes and error reports from the lifespan of my PS4 it would probably be in the hundreds and I accept that it happens occasionally. Perhaps I’m the mug for paying £70 and not being mad at the odd bug but I tell you what, it beats spending the day with a chip on my shoulder!
Ratchet and Clank will be £70, GT will be £70, Horizon will be £70, buy it or don’t. And I’m not going to insult Housemarque and suggest that Returnal doesn’t belong at £70 with those games. I’m having a blast.
Back on topic, 8 hours in and I’ve had 2 portal/door bugs. Disgusting, sort it out Housemarque, I’m getting a refund and waiting for it to get added to PS Plus so I can then moan about the Months offerings.
And this is why I very rarely buy games day one these days.
Wait a couple of months until they iron out all the bugs, then I bite.
Just had my first crash in about 6 hours of total gameplay so far. Frustrating but fortunately I wasn't too far into a run although I was just approaching the boss area
@TheDudeElDuderino broadly speaking, you’re right. Crashes in Cyberpunk are wide spread. Specifically from my experience, they absolutely were the exception - two crashes in over 100 hours. They’re common enough in Returnal for there to be articles published about them and comments sections full of frustrated users. Even the developer has issued a statement.
I just think Sony has put themselves in a vulnerable situation with how they’ve handled Cyberpunk. I believe they were right to pull it initially but now? It seems punitive and gives them no breathing room for situations like this.
Died on the first boss last night, finally getting some time into the game, and it crashed right afterward. I was fine with that though because I was hooked and I really needed to get some sleep!
The game needs a save option though, for sure, especially given this problem, and I wouldn’t say no to an easy mode being implemented either. Definitely would’ve been frustrated if the hard crash happened in the middle of a run. Still, what a fantastic game. First truly next gen experience, I think. Early goty candidate.
Had the "not able to open up doors" glitch twice with preorder suits. Which is a bummer, they look super cool
@thefourfoldroot it effects more than that game. I’v had the crash issue with numerous titles.
@dskatter I did have a crash with both Spider-Man games. Rest mode with the games suspended would kill the system when trying to get back out. Also sometimes in many games the screen went black with audio out for a few seconds, but that seems to be fixed now
The sky is falling!
No saves and crashing is so bad. It could cost you hours of progress. The issue isn’t a big deal normally, but with the horrid save system that managed to get greenlit, it’s a big problem.
@R1spam I don't remember. I haven't had any issues since November or December of last year. Everything thing been more or less smooth sailing... But that probably cause I've only been playing FFXIV for the last 4 months.
Seems we are going to need more of the general updates and bug fixes on PS5. Remember Drive Club at launch on PS4 I always thought a lot of the issues that game was having were on the Sony server side. I'm old now and overly patient and forgiving but understand the frustration is real.
@Floki reassuring then, I think the benchmark is if your system is crashing with Astrobot, your probably in trouble and need a repair/replacement.
My PS5 crashed a lot, especially during Spiderman until I stopped using rest mode and started using power off instead
20 hours in. No crashes. One invisible barnacle. Doesn't need a save system because rest exists or I just play until I die. Spiderman remastered crashed enlessly but is universally loved....
Feel like people who don't get roguelikes should have read reviews - can't dedicate the time to the game, don't buy it. Or maybe it's time for them all to... git... gud...
@Jaz007 there are no saves. The system works fine. I deleted my game by being an idiot and my save file was intact (my run wasn't, but why would I expect it to be?)
@Shakybeeves by perfect run including the boss do you mean no hit?! Holy crap that's insane.
@R1spam I had the same problem (CE - 108255) with my first ps5 (returned it to store and only yesterday got my new one...dealing with Sony and looking for a repair/replacement didn't tickle my fancy). Astro's crashed, Destruction Allstars crashed, Control did nothing but crash. Going by what the internet was saying, it was obvious the console was bricked from the off. On my new ps5, I've only been playing DMC5 ultimate and it's been fine...but interesting to see that others are now having this issue. Interestingly, Sony on their support page, now are ackowledging that the console might well have to be repaired/replaced if this keeps happening. Before they weren't - they were saying it was a "software" issue aha
O geez what were the last few games with crash problems on day 1 launch? Cyberpunk 2077 and outriders.. its becoming a day 1 trend now huh.
@killileahihoo wats dmc5 ultimate? All i got was special edition in my country..
Also your store was able to exchange ur ps5? In my country theyre never in stock so warranty would be useless.
@BansheeNorn Sorry, I meant 'Special'....getting confused aha. Ya, they exchanged it luckily. I'm in Ireland and stock has improved (so got my new ps5 from a different store yesterday)...just hoping I don't run into the same problems again.
@Voltan
I got mine at launch and I had a lot of crashes early on in Spider-Man. My PS4 titles have never given me any issue.
Now the only game that crashes is Black Ops Cold War. Typically it’ll just randomly crash every two weeks or so.
Only game I've ever had a crash with was Cold War, weirdly enough.
@killileahihoo interesting and glad your retailer sorted you out! Mine would only do refund. I got lucky with another retailer after my refund landed. Good to see they are acknowledging problem is hardware now, in my case my new system came and system software, game software even tv firmware were all same versions yet no crashes at all. Pretty much confirmed to me it was hardware
Beat the game in 30h with no bugs and 0 crashes. Digital copy and only used pre order suits.
@Dezzy70 @somnambulance @Jaz007 What can you expect? This is a Roguelike we're talking about. You can't ask for save points in roguelikes because they'll ruin the very concept of it, which is if you die, you go back to the start, with the progress that you keep are the permanent upgrades that you purchase at the beginning of each run. at least you have a Permanent Save at the beginning of the 4th biome as the last 3 are very hard but that's the only one you get.
The only save that they can implement is a one-time save and exit that can give you the chance to leave the game and resume afterwards when you return but if you die, the save is auto deleted and that's it.
@Arkantos2990 @Dezzy70 @Jaz007
Personally, the only reason why I’d want a save state is the same reason why I’d want an easy mode: I just don’t have the time to play a five hour run and I love the game. I want to see the story and I’m pressed for time. That said, I’d like to have a QoL mode and the strict roguelike mode since I enjoy the challenge too. I really like everything about Returnal, except the fact that I’ll probably eventually watch the cutscenes on YouTube because I’m lucky if I get 10 hours of gaming a week.
Played for 3 hours tonight. Was on the second level. Had loads of perks and good health. Decent gun. Was smashing it. Walked up this path near a rock, just before the second boss, fell through the floor. Landed in a glitched out sand world. But Was able to to walk all the way back the the staring point. Through hills (floating) got to a tele-porter and it crashed. Lost everything. Second time it’s crash on me. So frustrating. Needs sorting ASAP 😩
@Gooseuk haha no way, I'm no where near 'no hit' good
