No wonder Sony continues to dump money into Epic Games: court documents reveal that 46.8 per cent of Fortnite’s total revenues between March 2018 and July 2020 were driven by PlayStation 4. That’s significantly more than the 27.5 per cent contributed by Xbox One and 7 per cent spent through iOS. The remaining 18 per cent are split between PC, Android, and Nintendo Switch.
The data was revealed as part of an ongoing court battle between Apple and Epic Games, as the developer fights for a better share of the revenue on purchases accrued through the App Store. The irony here is that Sony is coining in a cool 30 per cent on every V-Buck sold, but perhaps the Unreal Engine maker doesn’t want to rock the boat too much on that front. With iOS contributing less than 10 per cent to its overall revenue, it probably feels confident it can better weather the consequences of its actions.
None of this will come as a surprise to those following Sony’s financials, of course. Microtransactions purchased through the PS Store are comfortably the organisation’s biggest revenue driver, exceeding both hardware and software sales. With PS4 having the largest global install base of all the major consoles, it’s only natural that its ecosystem is generating significant sums of money for third-parties.

literally everyone I know who plays this plays it on PlayStation... US games journalists seem to be the only people unaware of how popular the PS platform is worldwide
Take me to your Playstation to play Fortnite today?
Since Sony is now seeing the fortune they could get with Fornite, I wonder if we could get The Last of Us, Uncharted or even Ghost of Tsushima characters for the game. Seems like a no brainer if you ask me lol The closest thing we could get for a PS All stars (featuring Master Chief from the Halo series).
No wonder Sony's in bed with Epic.
Sony does a great job at releasing high quality first party games with no monetisation gimmicks. No loot boxes, no microtransactions. But they do make a lot of money from third party studios engaging in those practices.
@KippDynamite That is a really good point
I'm shocked the numbers are so low on the PC side.
@Ralizah pc dudes really don’t buy or support console games like that Pc guys mostly play csgo and League of legends.
@Mad-Vampire lol - what?
everyone knows how popular playstation is
@4kgk2 It released on PC and PS4 simultaneously, as I understand it, and the Battle Royale mode that made the game explode in popularity was developed in response to the success of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which was primarily associated with PC.
So, yeah, I'm a tad surprised.
Can you circumvent the other stores to buy vbucks or only ios?
It suddenly makes a lot of sense why Epic is fighting Apple on this one. Take one of the smaller markets that they'd survive losing/paying some penalty, but is big enough to gauge whether people will buy directly from them. Win and you have precedence to immediately cut out all other storefronts and make a lot more money. Lose, and you're out some cash, but not that much in the grand scheme of things.
@Ralizah fornite became popular mostly from consoles and is more known as a console game. just like cod is more known as a console game even though it started off on pc.
I will be supremely disappointed if Kratos can’t do K-Pop dances in Ragnarok.
Not so much surprised by the order as I am by the ratios. I would've guessed iOS and Switch would have higher percentages 🤷♂️
Does this mean I probably have Sony to thank for my weekly free PC game from Epic?
I have an image of Sammy snooping around court offices just to get this story.
@KippDynamite you never played the last of us multiplayer, didn’t you.
My god , what did they do to Kratos
Quite apart from how irrational Epic’s case is, I kind of hope they don’t win now as it’ll gut a large amount of money Sony depend on to provide games and services.
@Ralizah PC gamers are used to better deals, so they probably don't fall for the MTX as easily
Also bet there are a lot of young folks playing on PC who don't have a console (yet), and therefore no means to pay for MTX.
@4kgk2 @Ralizah I’m assuming it is something to do with the maturity/age/demographic of PC gamers over console gamers.
I play on PC. I’ve spent £0 money on the game. Likewise only a few of my PC gaming friends have. Same with Apex, we just saved up the free currency to unlock stuff.
My son, 9, plays on PlayStation. Over the past few years he’s probably spent £50-£100 (of my money) on it but I’ve managed to keep him down to mainly the battle pass with a few exceptional items plus the Save the World add on.
All his friends play on console and all his friends have spent more money than him.
You might also find because PC gamers are used to free things, non subscription for multiplayer and lots more game options that are micro transaction free, this might also be a reason, alongside the demographic difference, that makes PC gamers spend less.
@Octane I was thinking the opposite. More older people on PC and younger people with no self control on console. Haha
@Octane isn't/wasn't LoL super successful on PC ?
I don’t even wanna know how much money I’ve spent on this game in the past year on mine and my two Nephews accounts... 😫
Buying one skin/bundle three times can cost nearly £50 in v-bucks top ups ☠️
The way I see it is... I would usually pay for a trip to the Pictures/Indoor play centres etc. every weekend - and we haven’t been able to do any of that because of the pandemic.
So Fortnite has provided entertainment for us all during the worst months and it’s a been a good way for them to stay in touch with friends too.
Even without spending silly money on the store, the Battle Pass is extremely good value IMO. Hours and hours of entertainment for £6.49.
@Kienda
Did you just call console gamers immature children on a PlayStation site?
Seriously though, I've never played Fortnite and never will. As far as I'm concerned it's a micro transaction riddled scam designed to pressurise children into fleecing their parents out of money because of the FOMO. A glorified freeware mobile game.
@fR_eeBritney Nah, you've been ripped off mate.
😉
I mean some on here moan about spending money on an actual game, you're wasting lots of money on skins and suchlike?!
Don't get it.
When you consider that there are 115m PS4 owners and 50m Xbox one, it does show a relative higher rate of play on Xbox. That goes with the narrative of Xbox being the more multiplayer console.
Sony are clearly making plans for multiplayer games this gen, will be interesting to see how much they can move the needle.
The whole business model for games like this makes me sad.
@Col_McCafferty he is what you call a "whale" spends money endlessly and in large amounts too
@__jamiie unfortunately that is what the game industry has come to now, I'm not sure why something like this should be celebrated with how predatory and incidious fortnite is.
@Col_McCafferty I don’t see it that way at all.
Most things could be considered a ripoff to someone...
It’s F2P and the Battle pass only costs £6.49 a chapter. If you spend an additional £50 a chapter on extra skins (completely optional), it costs the same as if you bought any other non-F2P game at launch.
Are people who buy regular games at launch ripped off because they could wait a year and get it cheaper (or ‘free’ on PS+)?
Spending £50-60 a chapter on Fortnite or £50-60 on the latest COD (or any full price game) is no different IMO. Especially if you buy digital only, which a growing number of people are doing (no trade-ins).
I suppose you could argue it’s the same thing over and over again, with very little ‘effort’ put into it - but aren’t most multiplayer games like that (COD, FIFA etc.)?
I guess it all comes down to what you get out of it at the end of the day. And does that justify the cost. I think it does.
I don’t understand the ‘hate’ this game gets. No one is forced to play it and what other people spend their money on doesn’t impact me one bit.
I could understand if you had to fork out £50-60 for the base game and then pay for the additional skins on top but you don’t.
@Spaldy aren’t most things aimed at kids ‘designed to pressurise children into fleecing their parents out of money’ though? The latest videogame, the latest toy, the latest console, the latest iPhone, the latest football kit, the ice cream man who parks outside the school gates at home time? You can always just say ‘no’.
@Dekutheevilclown
Yeah, I'm quite surprised, since you didn't need any subscription to play this on PS4 vs Xbox One until recently, yet the higher attach rate is on Xbox in terms of console sold.
Very strange.
@Kienda "I’m assuming it is something to do with the maturity/age/demographic of PC gamers over console gamers."
Good conversation going on, thanks for that. Not sure I'd go w/ "age" or "maturity" but it didn't dawn on me until reading your comment that this article was amount $ spent, not number of players, so there may still be more people playing Fortnite on PC than console, but for whatever reason people spend more money on console.
Now I need to go find the "play" numbers to match up w/ the "spend" numbers. But it's too early in the morning for me.
@Spaldy yes! I am a PlayStation gamer (except for FPS on PC) and I am indeed an immature child.
But my point remains. When it comes to gaming, children are more likely to have console/mobile than PC. My 9-yr-olds friend group of about 10 boys. Not one has a PC, but they all have a combination of mobile and the various consoles.
@rejr Yeah, maybe my age thing was wrong. Because I know most gamers are in their 30s regardless of console or PC.
Nothing I said was definitive anyways, just some thoughts I was having to try figure this out.
It could simply be that more people play on PS4 over all other platforms and PC has a smaller user base for this particular game.
@Kienda Almost 40 here and i never use a PC anymore and played a lot of Guildwars on PC for several years never gave a toss about graphics and dispise keyboard and mouse controls.
I dont like the completely digital PC no ownership in any way. Or that i have to put effort in getting a game to run and no i dont want streaming only thats even worse. And this is coming from a guy who believed that i needed a PC.
Almost anything can be done on a mobile phone now only no real gaming also no ownership there.
PC or laptops are in a lot of homes though so i believe that people prefer the easier option.
@thefourfoldroot how's it irrational? Plenty of non-game apps on ios are allowed to have their transactions occur outside of Apple's control, so why should Epic be forced to go through Apple?
Durr durr I thought PS gamers don't play multiplayer games?
@Milktastrophe
They are. They are able to charge people through other avenues. Like Spotify can charge people a sub outside of iOS and then people can just use that app.
What they can’t do is go into someone else’s shop and set up a till, without giving anything to the shop owner. Which is basically what they are trying to do, get all the foot traffic and benefits of the platform without paying anything back. Not really rational or moral.
@Flaming_Kaiser I think I completely messed up what I was trying to say earlier.
Fortnite is a game for (mainly) younger gamers. Younger gamers (mainly) have access to mobile and console more readily than they do a gaming PC.
I wasn’t meaning most console gamers are young. I was meaning most console gaming Fortnite players are and there are more of them. My personally reference was based on the fact I play PC with other Dads and we play with our kids on Fortnite and none of us Dads spend money while our kids do. And I don’t know a kid who plays Fortnite on the PC, they all play console.
I clearly didn’t think through what I was saying earlier.
And also, I agree. I recently chose to save for a PS5 at the expense of upgrading my PC because of the ease of use factor and the guarantee that the game I play will run on my console just the same as everyone else.
@Kienda My biggest problem is that my friends dont play games so i would not know. What older games like me like i just love coming home parking my ass on a chair push a button and start. I dont even mind to swap a disk. 🤪
No setting no ***** no checking hardware i love it. The funny thing is my youngest brother had a Alienware and you know what he used to play BF a PS3 controller. 😁
@thefourfoldroot that analogy doesn't work because you don't run Fortnite through the app store. That's like saying all websites accessed through a browser must go through the app store for their transactions, after all they're taking advantage of the foot traffic and benefits of the platform.
PS has been keeping the lights on at most 3rd party publishers for years now. This is not surprising
